54 Donnebegesjes white bleached of 16 Wiessas, long 24, wide 1 57/8. 8b, at ƒ 1053: 15: the each pack. This difference is certainly large, but it is also a great distinction between linens of 16 or 18 Wiesas, since being of one and the same width, and the latter containing fully 320 threads, or two Wisas more, than the first, consequently must be finer of thread and also denser. It being indeed true that, if one wishes to calculate only on the difference of the length and width, beside that of the number of threads, those of 18 Wisar pro rata ought only to cost ƒ1367:18:—, but over and above that in a country like Souratta, where the linen merchants need give no other reasons than that they cannot or will not provide the goods any cheaper, such a calculation of proportion can avail little or be of use, since, with all due respect, it is not the question whether the suppliers act reasonably or unreasonably by wishing to have a disproportionate price for these and those sorts, but whether one can negotiate all the linens according to pro rata equally resulting or completely proportional prices, so this is no knowledgeable merchant's calculation, for the fine yarn also costs more than the coarse, and in a word, so far as I have been able to ascertain, the prices have been negotiated most closely, being able for my part to confirm on oath that from this, by me and also to my knowledge not by the Lords Directors, has the very least been profited. The procurement of the said linens took place upon a secret requisition, dated Batavia the 4th of February 1753, which in the month of December following was received here via Bengal, as appears from a letter of the 9th of April 1754 written by the former Director Johan De Roth and the undersigned to the former residents of Ahmadabad, Marten Huijsvoorn and Pieter Ellinkhuijsen, and that at the length of 27 and width of 1 2/3 Covids, namely raw, since the Doti Donnebegesjes of 18 Wiesas are always made to that length and width, when after bleaching they still retain at least the length of 26 and width of 1 59/16 Covids, one had no reason to think that, now they had to be made so much longer and wider, they would retain after bleaching the length of 27 and width of 1 2/3 Covids; but that these cloths were truly found in the Netherlands to be less than 26 Covids long and 1 9/16 wide, the undersigned must leave 55 2822 leave to the account and responsibility of the said factors, who should not have accepted any linen that was so loose of weave that it could shrink further during bleaching, to which one must necessarily attribute this, in case they truly had the required length and width, which is very hard to decide, but in default of which this is solely the fault of the second, Ellinkhuijsen, and the commissioners who measured the pieces in his presence. Yet as regards the quality of the same, the undersigned can say nothing other than that the inspected pieces from the packs that were opened here were all found sound, and also no defect in the packaging, it being out of practice and impossible to open here one by one all the packs that come from the subordinate offices, and to inspect the linens piece by piece, so that the bad finding of these cloths is directly nor indirectly to be imputed to the Lords Directors or the undersigned. Hoping herewith that the subscriber hereof has complied with the said orders; in that expectation he has the honor with respect to to be. Wenker NN First Clerk 56 Instruction for the Commissioners No 4. of the Bazaar, drawn up by the undersigned members of this Council, pursuant to what was ordered them by resolution dated the 6th of March last. 1. When the suppliers have brought in a good quantity of linens, they shall take down the assortments and quantities from them, and make two notes, of which they must deliver the one to the Honorable Worshipful Lord Director, and the other to the Second. 2. When the Bazaar or inspection of the cloths is held, to be present, and one of them to note the rebate that is set by the Lord Director and Council, while the other sees to it that what is rejected does not get among what is accepted. 3. After the conclusion of the Bazaar, they shall have to confront their notes against those the Secretary kept during the inspection, and in case of any difference, address themselves on that account to the Lord Director. 4. To inspect all the cloths piece by piece, and if they judge the tears that might be in some to be too large, or find too large darned tears therein, they shall have to reject them, as well as the misprinted and stained ones. 5. Subsequently to measure whether they indeed keep their full length and width. 6. To have the unbleached linens torn in their presence, as well as stamped with such chops as are currently in use at the Bazaar, or shall be thought fit to be introduced. 7. When the linens are taken out of the oil, to check whether the chops are still clearly to be seen, and if not, to re-chop the same. 8. During packing, to take care that everything is packed dry and not damp or dirty. 9. At least twice a week, both being in good health, to go by turns to the printers, and see closely to it that the dyers put the required quantities of dyes into the vat, and also

C@, men geene redenen hadde om te denken, dat, nu zoo veel langer en breeder moesten gemaakt werden, dat na de bleking de lengte van 27. en breedte van 1 2/3 6 bleven behouden, dog het geene die doeken waarlijk minder als 26. @ lang, en 19/6 breed in Nederland bevonden zijn, moet den ondergetekenden laten 55 2822 laten voor rekening en verantwoording van gem. factoors, die geen Lijwaat hadden behoren t' accepteeren, dat zo ijl van gewees was, dat bij het bleeken verder inkrimpen konde, waar aan men zulx noodsakelijk moet attribueeren, ingevalle waarlijk hun de vereijsch„ „te lengte en breed te hebben gehad, dat heel swaar valt te Decideeren, dog bij marquement van het welke sulx alleen de schuld is van de twede Ellinkhuijsen, en de Gecommitteerdens die ten zijnen overstaan de stucken hebben na gemeeten. Dog wat aanbelangt de deugt van deselve, kan den ondergetekenden niets anders zeggen, als dat de gevisiteerde stucken uijt de Dacken die hier zijn g'opend, alle deugdsaam en ook geen manquement aan de emballagie bevonden is, zijnde in geen gebruik„ en onmogelijk, alle de Dacken, die van de subalterne Comptoiren komen alhier een voor een t'operen, en de Lijwaten stuk voor stuk na te zien, zo dat de slegte bevinding van dese Doeken de Heeren Directeurs of den Ondergetekende Direct nog indirect t'imputeeren is. Bij de afpacking zorge te dragen dat alles droog en niet vogtig of zlam afgepakt werd. All the linens rejected at the bazaar are not to be delivered back before the end of the petition bazaar, yet only with the prior knowledge of the Director and the Second, unless it should be decided or ordered otherwise in the meantime. 37. Careful attention must be paid that the accepted goods are unpacked first and sent to the printers, washers, and calenderers, because otherwise the suppliers will find an opportunity, when they store those cloths in the warehouses, to mix the rejected cloths with the accepted ones, which one is indeed compelled to place in one warehouse because there is no suitable storage space. 38. And should it indeed happen that it was necessary for the cloths to be stored in the warehouse, this must take place in their presence, and two locks must be placed on the door of the warehouse, namely one belonging to them and one belonging to the suppliers. 39. When any assortments of linens, pursuant to the orders from Batavia letters to Bengal of the 18th of August 1744 and the 22nd of October 1745, are accepted at proportional prices notwithstanding their lesser length and width for the Fatherland, or notwithstanding their lesser length, width, and quality for India, this shall be stated on the packing slips, and the linens that are accepted for India's capital must be marked with the Batavia stamp. 40. The Commissioners must also take care that they do not record greater lengths and widths on any packing slips than the pieces actually contain when bleached, dyed, printed, and dressed, or at shipment. 41. Upon delivery of cotton yarns, they must watch carefully not to weigh them unless bone-dry, and especially check whether any material or dirt has been inserted inside the skeins to increase the weight. 42.
