Read the 20th of April 1795 Patria To the Right Honorable the Directors deputed to the Assembly of the Seventeen, representing the General Netherlands East India Company at the Presidial Chamber of Zeeland. On the 18th previously, there having been brought to us by the ordinary land post from Calcutta a missive from the Honorable High Indian Government, dated the 5th of October of the previous year, to which was attached a packet addressed to Your Right Honors, with orders to dispatch the same to England at the first opportunity for further forwarding, which we now have the honor to fulfill, in the hope that the same will in due course be safely delivered to Your Right Honors. Since we may take it for certain that Your Right Honors will already be informed of the mournful condition into which the war with the French Republic has plunged Netherlands India, and the means that have generally been employed for its security, we will not elaborate on that, but only bring to Your Right Honors' notice that the Calcutta Government, already several months ago, for the security of trade, equipped a fleet of six or seven merchant ships for war, from which all good is expected, and which was deemed all the more necessary since only one English war frigate was present in all of India, commanded by the brother of the recently repatriated English Governor-General My Lord Cornwallis; it is true that to this day no report has been received that the common enemy has suffered much damage thereby, yet it is certain that the privateers which were equipped from Mauritius and in the beginning threatened to deal a fatal blow to trade are now no longer so formidable, and that the Bay of Bengal is entirely free. Herewith recommending Your Right Honors to God's protection, we have the honor to be with due respect, Right Honorable Sirs, Your Right Honors' humble and very obedient servants, Houglij in Bengal the 19th of April 1794. Op den 18e. bevoorens, aan ons met de gewoone Landpost van Caleutta, aangebragt zynde, een missive van de Edele Hoo¬ Leeme Origineel. ge Indische Regeering, gedateer 5e. october des voorigen Jaars, bij welke gevoegd was een Pak „ket aan Uwel Edele Hoog Ach baare gerigt, met bevel het zelve bi de eerste geleegendheid naa Engeland af te zenden, ter verdere voortschikking, waar aan wij thans de Eere hebben te voldoen, in hoope dat het zelve uw WelEdele Hoog Achtbaare ter zyner tyd veilig zal ter hand ge¬ steld worden. Daar wij voor zeeker vast moogen stellen, dat uw wel Edele Hoog Achtbaare reeds zullen onderrigt zyn, in welke droerige omstandig „heid, het oorlog met de Re „publicq Vrankryk, Needer „landsch India gedompeld heeft, ende middelen welke men in t generaal tot dies E beveiliging eegen beveiliging heeft werkstellig gemaakt, zoo zullen wy daar over niet uitweiden, maar alleenlyk uw welEdele Hoog Achtbaare ter kennisse bren¬ gen, dat het caleutse Gou¬ vernement, reeds voor verscheiden Maanaen, ter beveiliging van den han „del, een sloot van zes a zeeven koopvaardij schee¬ pen ten oorlog heeft uyt gerust, waar van man alles goeds verwagt, en t welk te meer noodzaa kelyk wierd geacht, dewyl slegts een oorlogs Fregat der Engelsche zig ingeheel India bevond, gecomman¬ deerd wordende door de Broe¬ „der van de Iongst gerepa trieerde Engelsche Gou verneur Generaal Mylard Cornwallis; men heeft wel de wel is waar tot heeden toe geen narigt bekoomen, dat de algemeene Vijand daar door veel afbreuk heeft geleeden dog dit is zeeker dat de kapers wel¬ ke van de Mauritius zyn uitgerust en in den beginne de handel een doo delyke slag dreijgde toe te brengen, thans zoo gedugt niet meer zyn, en dat de Gols van Bengaale geheel en al vry is. bier meede uw WelEdele Hoog Achtbaare Godes bescherming aan„ beveelende, hebben wy de Eer Eere met verschuldigd respect te zyn.
