The Commander has also been verbally informed by the governor. on the 25th of September 1770: to deliver a memorandum to his successor for his instruction and provisional guidance, but that the condition of his body made the completion thereof utterly impossible for him, and that he also thought he might hope that this would cause no detriment to the Honourable Company's interests, since his true feelings regarding the state of this post were described in detail in the secret papers already dispatched and now further departing, and he besides had had sufficient opportunity during the Commander's presence of three months to give him so much instruction and elucidation, that he did not doubt that the same found himself capable of following the arrangements and methods of treatment that were presently in place, both with respect to politics and relations with the native, as well as regarding mercantile and domestic affairs. Since the ships lying here are not safe from the pirates, the governor had a place sought where, in case of need, a half or fully laden ship could lie. Such a place has been found. Lastly, we must also report here that since the ships cannot lie here in the roads free from danger from the Maratha pirates, the governor, through the ship's captain George Jacob Meijer, the Master Attendant Lourens Buijs, and the surveyor Ian Willem De Graaf, has had exact examination and survey made as to whether north of the northern reef a suitable place was not to be found where a ballasted or half-laden ship could lie in time of need and be supported from the shore by a battery against the Maratha pirates. The trade work, according to what was noted in our general missive dated 31 March last, having been pursued with all zeal, and the trade books of this Commandment of the year 1768/9 now being completed, we wished to present the same to Your High Nobilities as soon as possible, and as we lack a direct or better opportunity for this, we are sending the same via Tutucorijn and Coromandel under cover of another brief note, so that this one need not be delayed on the way for the books, and does not miss the opportunity of being sent to Your High Nobilities. The aforementioned books have, according to our resolution of the 22nd of this month, of which an extract accompanies this, been properly inspected by designated commissioners, and no errors were found therein, as may be seen in the report of the commissioners inserted in the aforementioned resolution, in which is also to be found the report of the Head Administrator concerning the debtors and creditors, together with the outstanding accounts as of the last of August 1769, with the resolutions and notes taken and kept on that day in this regard; and to which, for the sake of brevity, we respectfully refer. Consequently, this Commandment in the financial year 1768/9, in comparison with the one before, has fallen behind by a sum of: ƒ185234. 17. 8 the lesser profits being caused by a smaller sale of merchandise, and especially of Japanese bar copper, with which we were not provided at the time; and the lesser revenues are to be attributed to the fact that in the year 1769 the lease period of the Company's gardens and lands was changed and set to begin on the first of September and end on the last of August, whereas it previously began on the first of January and expired on the last of December, as was respectfully communicated to Your High Nobilities by the general missive dated 15 March of last year, whereby, because the lease monies for 1768 up to December were already entered as revenue in 1767/68, only eight months of lease monies remained to the credit of this account in the financial year 1768/9, namely from January to August 1769. But these eight months of lease monies were also not entered into the aforementioned books, because they were only fully received from the leaseholders in the months of May and July 1770 and brought into the treasury in the amount of 8650 14/15 rupees, and thus were first entered in the small cash book of 1769/70, for which reason they will then also be brought into that financial year under previous year's profits and revenues at ƒ10381: 2: 8; likewise another 1973 1/3 rupees or ƒ2368. — on account of arrears from the leaseholder of the petty traders for the year 1768/9, which only came in during the month of December 1769 and were also entered in the cash book of 1769/70. How on 22 April last, speaking with Coemara Poela among other things also about that same affair, and on that occasion again standing firmly on its settlement, Coemara Poela then assured the Commander in confidence in the name of His Highness that His Highness had previously indeed made excuses regarding this matter, that it had been paid, but nevertheless had not paid the debt, but would now settle it, provided it be in ten years, and thus in ten installments. How he, although already foreseeing then that this was merely flattery and that when the time came there would be hitches and difficulties, nevertheless acted afterward as if he relied firmly upon it, and as if he had already communicated that promise positively and as a certain truth to Batavia. How he since received assurance from His Highness himself by an express letter that the old debt would be settled, and that Coemara Poele would come down both to that end and to settle the pepper account of the past year. How, however, that pepper account remained unconfronted, and Coemara Poele continually stayed behind, whereas that pepper account ordinarily ought to have been settled after the completion of the previous year's delivery. How the Commander nevertheless had continued to insist upon it, until finally in these days His Highness's prime minister of state came down, together with Coemara Poele and the ordinary account writers, bringing with them such a letter as is inserted below. We have received, read, and understood the contents of Your Right Honorable's letter, by which we saw that we were in arrears with some money to the Honorable Company on account of the debt of Attinga; and that we would provide and pay that amount within the period of ten years, which point having been considered by us, we understood that this debt would have arisen from the robberies committed in former times against the vessels of the Honorable Company, likewise the spoliation committed at the residency of Tengapatnam, according to the list sent to us at that time, over which letting our thoughts pass, we cannot well comprehend that the ministers of the realm would have made themselves guilty thereof. However, the Lords Commanders who governed the city of Cochin at that time having knowledge thereof, that point was set down in the concluded contract, with the addition that that debt was to be settled and liquidated according to the judgment of impartial persons. Regarding the debt of the Kottar merchants, we have had them summoned before us, who, being questioned, testified that that debt had been paid. Therefore we now send the said merchants thither to liquidate that account, upon whose arrival there and at the confrontation of the account, if they are still remaining in arrears for any moneys, we shall have proper satisfaction given through the said merchants. Concerning that which we are still in arrears for the captured cannon and the mortars, the account thereof and the granted receipts are still in existence, and which are now remitted thither into the hands of our Padreadan Valia Sarvadhikariakar and Coemara Poela Sarvadhikariakar, and the account writers, in order to settle that debt finally, with the request that Your Right Honorable please hear their commission upon their arrival there, and clear this matter out of the way without inflicting any damage or disadvantage upon us, and communicate to us in writing how much money we are in arrears to the Honorable Company at the close of that debt account, whereupon we shall write to Your Right Honorable in what manner the settlement thereof might take place. How he, having dared because of this to stand somewhat firmer on his ground than usual, had seriously conferred and negotiated with the Travancore emissaries today, the entire day from nine o'clock in the morning until five o'clock in the afternoon, chiefly consisting in this: That the emissaries, although still wishing to pretend that the debt had been paid, or at least that very much had been satisfied in proportion to the illegitimacy of the debt, had nevertheless been exposed and had admitted that His Highness had only paid for the captured artillery and not for the Attingal debt. That they nevertheless, with regard to the remaining debt for the captured artillery, had disputed quite seriously and demonstrated that the same is not as large as we state, because we had calculated the pepper which His Highness had delivered at Coylang in reduction of that debt at 55 rupees and not at 65 rupees per 500 lb, and had furthermore not credited His Highness with the toll of 4 gold Rajas of 15 1/2 stuivers each, per candy, just as His Highness enjoys from the Company on all the pepper that is delivered. That the emissaries in this regard insistently demanded absolutely better and different evidence for the validity of our claim, and failing that, finally refused to pay, openly saying that we could not demonstrate that they owed that sum, that His Highness had also not bound himself to that sum which we claim, but only in general terms, and that if we had been able to prove the magnitude of our claim, we would certainly have specified that sum in the contract. That the Commander, however, in and during these debates, tried to navigate through these caltrops, now by seriousness and then by earnest firmness, continuing therewith or desisting therefrom as he saw that he gained ground by it. That, they having finally proposed an accommodation or agreement, the Commander had stipulated in advance, as a condition sine qua non, a formal acknowledgment that the remaining debt on the captured artillery amounted to 7861 1/2 rupees, and a promise to pay the same first and foremost, without being allowed to renege on it. That he specifically wanted to stipulate this in advance because there then seemed to be a greater likelihood, once they effectively had to surrender that amount anyway, to bring them to the further settlement. That he, hoping thereby to achieve something more or less with relation to this settlement, did not refuse this, but only postponed his decision thereon until they should have reached an understanding regarding the questionable debt. That, they having departed therewith this afternoon, the Commander had just now been privately and reliably informed that the envoys had resolved to write to His Highness about the outcome of their mission and the Commander's obstinacy, and to request authorization to give, in addition to the previously settled debt for the captured artillery, the full half of the remaining questionable debt of 23123 29/48 rupees; but that the Paliath Achan, being with them, had made extraordinary efforts and in the strongest manner persuaded the emissaries to simply proceed to do so of their own accord, and to de facto pay both the one and the other in cash, promising that in case of disapproval he would vouch for it to His Highness, and if necessary compensate the excess amount paid out of his private purse; and that the Paliath Achan had managed to push and drive it so far that they would have this offer made the following morning, in pursuance of which the Commander further made known: How he would have presented the Paliath Achan's request to the assembly long ago, if only his request had been accompanied by a confession of guilt, or at least by silence regarding his innocence, because whenever one has to negotiate with the King of Cochin about some important matter, His Highness does nothing without his advice anyway, and the Paliath Achan thus has a hand in everything, which only causes delay and trouble. That I have committed no offense against the Honorable Company, I very humbly request Your Right Honorable, if by misfortune I should have been brought into a bad light with the Right Honorable Lord Governor, to be pleased to have this undone, and to accept me once again in grace. I request Your Right Honorable to take all this to heart, and to send me a consoling reply. Signed by the Pallietter. That he, the Commandeur, had nonetheless left those letters unanswered for the time being in order, if it were possible, to bring him even further to humiliation, the more so because he repeatedly insisted on his innocence therein; and the Commandeur did not wish to acknowledge that he had been declared a rebel innocently, a conclusion he might well have drawn had he been relieved thereof upon such a letter, and also primarily because he is known as a clever, enterprising, and proud minister. How thereupon, around that same time, when the envoys of His Travancore Highness arrived to negotiate concerning the Attingal debt, he wrote for pardon in the following letter. Translation of an ola written by the Paljetter to the Right Honorable Lord Commandeur Adriaan Moens, received on the 12th of July 1771: At a time when the planets were unfavorable to me, and I lay plunged in the disastrous circumstances never before heard of among men on the Malabar, I received news that Your Right Honorable had arrived here in Cochin. I then flattered myself that Your Right Honorable, through his well-known goodness, would accept me once again in grace, to which end I wrote three different olas filled with praying and entreating to accept me once again in grace as before; but to all those three olas I have not received the least reply from Your Right Honorable, much less heard that Your Right Honorable was inclined to listen to my grievances. When one sins against God and returns to repentance and prays for forgiveness, one nevertheless receives grace. Here on the Malabar Coast it is currently proclaimed that Your Right Honorable has shown benevolence to many people, being of a compassionate nature. In my case I perceive no mercy thus far; therefore I take my refuge once again in Your Right Honorable with a humble request to accept me once again in grace as of old, under the true assurance that my endeavors will be directed toward nothing other than the welfare of the Honorable Company. I pray Your Right Honorable once and again to arrange my affairs for the best; I await a consoling reply to this from Your Right Honorable. Signed by the Paljetter. That, wishing to pardon him, it was now the right time to do so, or at least to give him the opportunity to pay his respects in person to the Commandeur. The Commandeur requesting on the one and the other the advice of the members, namely to what extent one should reach an agreement regarding the Attingal debt, whether one should allow the pepper account of last year, in which His Highness was already debited for the full debt, to be changed, and finally whether one should permit the Paljetter to come and pay his compliments to the Commandeur. Whereupon among other things it was taken into consideration that the assertion of the envoys regarding the calculation of the delivered pepper against the remaining debt for the captured ordnance at rupees 55 and not at 65 per candy of 500 lbs, together with the Thoes rights, comes into consideration, or at least that His Highness in any case could have sufficed with giving cash instead of that pepper, just as His Highness once paid 6600 rupees in cash in reduction of that same debt, and that the Honorable Company would surely rather keep that delivered pepper at 65 rupees than return it to him and receive 55 rupees in cash in exchange; that one may thus regard the acceptance of that calculation at 55 rupees, and the assumption founded thereon regarding the remaining debt for the captured ordnance, according to our calculation amounting to rupees 7861½, as a moderation not corresponding to the greedy and petty nature of the Malabars; that with respect to the Attingal debt it appears sufficiently from the papers that it has originated from so long ago that there has almost never been any hope of getting it paid, that it was therefore regarded as hopeless and desperate, and as good as written off, and seems only to have been kept alive to make His Highness understand that the Company had not yet forgotten it, but still held that claim; that one also never seems to have known exactly how large that debt was, because the Lord Commandeur Adriaan van

Van Ommen together with the Council, having written to Batavia by letter of 27 February 1695 regarding the magnitude of this debt when it was not yet so old, declared that it then amounted calculatively and roughly estimated and was appraised at Rds 22856. 34¾, and the Commander Chines declared by letter of 20 October 1753 that no other proofs thereof were to be found in the Trade Books than general wordings comprising a memorandum or account of three distinct entries, of which one was ƒ 19167, the second 8910 and 18 Stuivers, and yet a third 6607 and 19 stvers, together ƒ 34685 and 17 Stuivers, or Ropias 23123. 9/48, corresponding with what the Commander De Jong had extracted with reference to those three entries and appended to his left memorandum, just as Governor Serff in his negotiation with the emissaries of His Highness of Trevancore on 25 February 1770, speaking about that same matter, also referred, note well: for lack of better proofs, to the note thereof to be found at the back of the left memorandum of Commander de Jong, all of which has been transmitted to His Highness time and again in Malabar; that His Highness now for the first time, and as the emissaries say, allowing special negotiations thereon, and on that account wishing, ostensibly out of affection for the Commander, to enter into an agreement, one ought not now to let that opportunity slip; that in any case it is better to have something and even a large part thereof than nothing; that the Malabar princes are very fickle and think nothing of retracting their word; that even if His Highness promised to settle the entire debt as we calculate it in ten years and thus in ten terms, this would have no more validity than the contract itself, whereby he promised to satisfy the debt within the period of six months; that His Highness could thus shelve these promises of ten terms, just like the promise under the contract of six months, under all kinds of pretexts; that one is also not certain what mishaps one might experience with His Highness in those ten years that could hinder this satisfaction, because of which the Company would then regret not having simply accepted what was offered; and with reference to placing this debt on account, that it appears from the papers and is known how Mr. Cunes once placed only a portion to the sum of rops 13000:- on account, and having communicated this to Batavia by secret letter of 20 October 1753, Their High Excellencies thereupon de facto wrote by secret letter of 8 October 1754 that they feared His Highness would not accept that account, with the recommendation in that case to remove that sum from His Highness's account at once, just as it then turned out and occurred in like manner, as appears from what was communicated concerning this from here by secret missive of 24 March 1755, since which time His Highness has indeed been continuously dunned for the debt, but has never been debited for it again; that it appears from the conference and the debates that the emissaries took nothing so ill, nor bristled so much over anything, as over the placing of this debt on account, and absolutely demanded money for the delivered pepper of last year or else would depart, notwithstanding that the Commander told them of entirely different gratuities, over which they showed no significant malice, that besides the purpose of that placing on account was merely to try it out, since one always had the power to remove that entry again; finally, with reference to the Paliath Achan, that he has kept himself very quiet to this day, just as if there were no Paliath Achan; that it is known that the King of Cochin, not being very clever in himself, entrusts all the affairs of his kingdom to the Paliath Achan, takes his advice, and also follows it; that if one ever had to deal with His Highness of Cochin on something of importance, especially if we might receive the expected orders from Batavia, one might not be able to come to terms with His Highness, and the Paliath Achan might sometimes out of revenge persuade the king to obstinacy rather than to pliability; that although the Paliath Achan is not very beloved by all the courtiers of Trevancore, but many hate him secretly, the rest are nevertheless devoted to him, and in particular His Highness of Trevancore likes him very well, so that the Paliath Achan would still be of some use if one knows how to handle him and keep him in check, as he actually ought to be handled and kept in check; that besides, his letters are submissive enough, and especially his last, wherein he humbles himself as much as the poorest and most destitute beggar can do, by which the heart of a compassionate person must indeed be touched. On the 13th of July, Saturday morning around 8 o'clock, the Commander sent the chief interpreter van Tongeren with the orembai to the Cochin court, to fetch the Balia Sarwadhikariakar and prime minister of the King of Trevancoor, named Patter Oenij, as he arrived shortly thereafter at the river gate with the said vessel, and subsequently rode from there with the carriage to the residence of His Honorable, bringing along in his company the prime pepper supplier, the Sarwadhikariakar Coemara Poela, and the bookkeepers of His Highness. After they had taken their seats according to their rank in the audience hall, and the Commander having had pen and paper brought to him in order to take notes himself, to make them understand that what occurred at this transaction would be accurately recorded for posterity, the aforementioned prime minister handed over a letter from his master the King addressed to the Commander, and accompanied it with a particularly friendly though lengthy compliment regarding the esteem that His Highness had in his heart for the Commander. The Commander testified his gratitude for the good sentiments which His Highness was pleased to hold of him and said that on his part he would also leave nothing untried to do His Highness every possible favor. Furthermore, the envoys said that they had orders from their master not only to confront, close, and liquidate the pepper account of last year; but also to negotiate about the Attingal debt; that His Highness thought to give hereby a special proof of the consideration His Highness has for the Commander; because no express negotiations have ever taken place concerning that affair, much less such a distinguished embassy, that His Highness had therefore chosen this prime minister of his for this purpose, and more other flatteries, which the Commander did not desire to note down; yet the emissaries said at the same time that they could give no further disclosure regarding the further particulars of their commission until after the Commander should have had the letter brought by them translated. The Commander, hearing this, said that it was very agreeable to him that the previous year's account should be closed, because that should long have been done, to avoid the errors and confusion that are usually caused when the accounts of one year run into the other; but that it was even more agreeable to him that the debt of Attingal should be cleared, since, upon the assurance that he had obtained from Coemara Poela, he had already written so favorably about it to Batavia as if that matter were already settled; adding to this that he thanked His Highness very much indeed for the consideration His Highness showed him by having that matter expressly negotiated and sending so distinguished an embassy, but that according to his customary frankness he could nevertheless not fail to say how he was also informed that Commander Weijerman had personally negotiated with His Highness, and Commander Breekpot along with the Noble Governor Senff likewise with His Highness's former prime ministers about it; and that he, the Commander, was thus not the first who, after that matter has already lasted over 70 years, has negotiated about it again since; but that nonetheless he would now test by this commission whether His Highness truly meant well by him, and to what extent His Highness's affection was greater for him than for others, as something to which His Highness so greatly appeals, and with which he is indeed very pleased. The Commander said that these were merely ordinary excuses, that he was indeed pleased that his Highness had given such good orders, but had the delivery been pursued with somewhat more earnestness in the good season, they would have run no risk of delivering in the bad monsoon; that possibly a few small vessels having capsized is now being made much more of than is actually the case, and that the Low Delivery of other Years was bad enough and no argument, but rather proves that the Contract in that respect was still seldom fulfilled, and that they might just examine their own consciences on this matter; yet the Commander added again in a friendly manner that he hoped and also trusted that this would go better hereafter, and so that no payment might be lacking on the Commander's side, that the Requested 25000: Rupees were at his Highness's service. They then promised that they would do their utmost, especially Coemare Poele as pepper supplier of the South, to satisfy his Honour. Wherewith this Conference ended, and they departed outside in the same manner as they had entered. The letter directed by his Highness of Trevancoor to The Commander having been translated, was found to be of the following Content. Translation of the Letter written by the King of Trevancoor to the Right Honourable Lord Commander Adriaan Moens, received the 13: July 1771: — We have received, read, and understood the Contents of Your Right Honourable's Letter, whereby we saw that we were in arrears to the Honourable Company for some Money on account of the debt of Attinga, and that we were to produce and pay that amount within the period of 10: Years; which point having been considered by us, we understood that this debt supposedly arose from the Robbery committed in ancient times upon the vessels of the Honourable Company, likewise the spoliation committed at the Residency of Tengapatnam, according to the list sent to us at the time, letting our thoughts dwell upon which, we cannot well comprehend that the Ministers of the Realm would have been guilty thereof; however, the Lords Commanders who governed the city of Cochim at that time having knowledge thereof, that point was laid down in the Contract made, with the addition that this debt is to be settled and liquidated according to the verdict of impartial persons; concerning the debt of the Cottatta merchants, we have summoned them to us, who, upon being questioned, testified that this debt had been paid; therefore we now send the aforementioned merchants thither to liquidate those Accounts, upon whose arrival there and upon the Confrontation of the account, should they still remain in arrears for any moneys, we shall have a proper satisfaction given by the aforementioned merchants. The 14th of July, Sunday, passed, as well as the following days, without the envoys coming in, on account of the indisposition of the Prime Minister and the heavy rains, which continued without interruption during these days. In this intervening time, the Commandeur had confidants investigate what their mission actually was, and why they did not yet wish to come out directly, primarily because the king's letter showed clearly that it would again be the same old tune, namely, denial of the authenticity of the debt, and a claim for other proofs, and thus no settlement, until the Commandeur, through some expenditures to certain persons, learned something, namely, that the envoys in fact had more orders and authority than appeared from the letter, and that they even had orders not to trouble the Commandeur, but to bring him into good confidence with His Highness, and to satisfy him with a little, or otherwise to keep the matter amicably dragging on, and to return under the pretext of speaking about it again at another time; which the first Interpreter, having also perceived it from afar, made known to the Commandeur, whereupon he expressly ordered him in secret that, whenever he might be sounded out in one way or another, namely whether the Commandeur would stand firm on that matter, merely to say that upon reading the letter he had become very astonished and displeased, would henceforth hardly trust any Malabars anymore, but regretted having written so favorably to Batavia concerning His Highness, and that he took it so ill privately that he could no longer have that veneration for His Highness as he had in the beginning. Other confidants also received this recommendation. The 20th of July, Saturday, the envoys requested an audience for the coming Monday. or Anno 1771, the 19th of June, and signed by His Highness. Below stood: for the translation, Cochim, date as above. Was signed: S. v. Jongeren, sworn Translator. The 22nd of July, Monday morning after nine o'clock, the above-mentioned envoys came again to the audience with the same decorum as on the 13th. Having taken their seats, they asked whether the letter from their master the King had been translated. The Commandeur answered with a serious friendliness only, "Yes," and nothing more. They asked whether its content had also been well understood. The answer, with the same demeanor, was, "No," also without more. They looked at each other, made all sorts of friendly gestures, and asked why the Commandeur did not understand the content of that letter. The Commandeur replied that the esteem he has in general for a king, and especially for His Travancore Highness, caused him to say that. Then they became even more eager, redoubled their outward friendliness, and asked with astonished curiosity the reason for the Commandeur's statement. The Commandeur said that if he confronted the King's last promise, recently made to him through Poemare Poele, namely that His Highness would settle the old debt, with His Highness's letter, he would have to conceive a strange opinion of His Highness if he acknowledged at the same time that he understood the contents of that letter; and that he, out of esteem for His Highness, would therefore rather say that he could not yet understand its contents, and would therefore first hear what their commission consisted of, to see if that would shed more light on the matter, in order thereby to understand each other better. Hereupon they came to the matter by a complete roundabout way, saying the King was pleased to be in good harmony with the Commandeur; the King also truly had great esteem for him, especially since, from his arrival here on the Malabar coast, the well-known disputes with the King of Cochim, His Highness's bosom friend, had gone no further, but the reciprocal movements on both sides had been postponed; the Commandeur, at the very first meeting with His Highness's servants who came into the town to Governor Senff at that time, had spoken with resoluteness and adherence to his word, as well as repeatedly about the old debt; indeed, he had also continually, through private messages, caused requests to be made in the strongest manner to please settle that old debt, declaring that it would not be good if that matter were not settled, and assuring that the debt was authentic and true; that debt, they said further, had now become so old because it had never been proved; His Highness, through those strong entreaties, had come to understand that the Commandeur possibly had some proofs of it

Who, becoming somewhat familiar, yet concealing it, and understanding well what they were aiming at, simply replied that they would do better to leave the Company's Trade Books in their value: that this hypothetical argument of theirs was irrelevant to the matter, and he could likewise say the same of their leaves and accounts: that their remark concerning the 13th Article of the Contract of the Year 1743 was merely imaginary; that everything which stands in a previous Contract, and is not specially named in a subsequent one, was thereby naturally annulled: that in any case the Contract of 1743 was never approved by Batavia and therefore proves nothing in this matter; that in the most recent Contract, which is genuinely approved and thus valid, there was no mention of an investigation by Good Men, but it was effectively promised to settle the debt within six months, as if His Highness meant to say: to claim no further proof regarding the old debt. They remained, however, immovably insistent upon further and better proofs, and then added to this that the debt of Attinga in any case did not concern His Highness; that the Company had perhaps suffered damage during the Attinga government, but solely through the robberies which at that time, when the Attinga government was divided, took place everywhere. The Commandeur said that this was an objection which His Highness should have made before His Highness signed the Contract, and if he found himself aggrieved by it, he should by no means have signed the Contract; that His Highness was now according to contract obliged to pay that debt, and that with the greatest equity, because His Highness, having assumed the realm of Attinga, thereby at the same time took over the debt that that realm had, wherefore that debt then, so to speak, was no longer an Attinga debt, but properly speaking had become a Travancore debt, all the more because the Queen never denied the debt, but rather acknowledged it, and merely delayed payment indefinitely.
