The undersigned commissioners, in compliance with Your Right Honorable's honored order, having presented themselves today in the Dutch Church here, and having publicly witnessed the Deacons of this city and outside regents of the Leper Asylum at Paliaporto render a proper accounting of their administrations during the year 1777/8, after confronting their books against the monthly accounts and warrants, found that the capital of the poor and the Leper Asylum, as of the end of August 1777, amounted to: of the diaconate poor / of the Leper Asylum / together With the Honorable Company at interest at 4 1/2 percent annually: Rupees 16000. - / Rupees 3520. - / Rupees 19520. - Under the Diaconate Cashier Philip Philips: Rupees 145. 15. / Rupees 4167. 7. / Rupees 4313. 2. Extract Resolution Saturday the 19th of December 1778. Adopted in the Council of Malabar, at the city of Cochin Next was read and reviewed a written report, together with a presentation of the General Charges by two members of this assembly, the merchant and fiscal Samuel Constantin Saffin and the junior merchant and payroll bookkeeper Coenraad George Seyffer, who, pursuant to the resolution of the 2nd current, compared the Trade Books of the year 1777/8; as well as a report from the Honorable Head Administrator Reinier van Harn regarding the debtors and outstanding accounts, together with the creditors and credit accounts continuing in the said books. And whereas it appeared from the first-mentioned report that the books were kept properly and according to order, and were found to be without errors, it was resolved and agreed to authorize the Bookkeeper to proceed with the closing of the books and to insert the report, along with that of the Honorable Head Administrator, into these records, and to grant on the last-mentioned such dispositions as are annotated in the margin thereof for each entry. To the Right Honorable, Highly Venerable, High-Commanding Lord Adriaan Moens Extraordinary Councillor of the Dutch Indies, and Governor and Director of this Coast of Malabar with its dependencies. The undersigned Head Administrator has hereby the honor to provide your Right Honorable with a report and to demonstrate the debtors and outstanding accounts, as well as the creditors and credit accounts, as they existed at the closing of the Trade Books of this coast for the book-year 1777/8, namely: The Debtors, being: The Zamorin or King of Calicut. For what was still debited under Primo September and of which nothing was received during the course of this book-year: ƒ 7442: 18: 8. Marginal note: As long as the Nawab Hyder Ali Khan remains the possessor of the stretch of land from Chettua to Cranganore, this debt is hopeless, and nothing can be collected in reduction thereof. This charge will be settled in the upcoming books according to the instructions of Their Right Excellencies' Missive. That which was advanced by the former Commander of this Coast, the Honorable Godefridus Weijerman, to the Moorish Regent Adij Ragia on the basis of the Contract made in the Year 1755: and according to Their Right Excellencies' resolution dated 2 April 1764: already paid to the Honorable Company by the said Honorable Weijerman under a larger amount, but by further resolution of 30 August 1770: was again liberated therefrom, consequently charged here to be collected from the said Moorish Regent at - - - - - - - . . - - - ƒ 14404: —: —. The 6th of July in the City of Cochim Anno 1778 Sent to the Paliat Achan on the 6th of July Anno 1778 The Christian in the kattoe Jorze, who is appointed in the service of the Honorable Company as head over a Company of lascars, has plaintively made known to my Illustrious superior, the Right Honorable Lord Governor, that in the time of the Right Honorable Lord Governor Senff, a claim having been made against him on behalf of the King regarding the rights to the gardens and lands, it was promised to him by the King upon his submitted objections that his gardens and lands would be transferred for nothing, so that he had brought and surrendered his two Cana olas to the Court. However, the deed of transfer thereof has up to now not taken place, and on the contrary they have taken possession of some gardens and lands that he, Jorze, had taken in Cana from other inhabitants. Now a claim has anew been made on behalf of the King upon the garden on which his house stands, half of which he had bought in freehold and the other half obtained in Cana, with the addition that he could receive back his Cana money, and the lawfully purchased land would be paid for according to the appraisal of four knowledgeable people, so that he would surrender the one and the other; and to that end the garden taken in Cana has been placed under arrest. It is a matter very contrary to law and fairness to deprive people of their garden which they, in the time of their ancestors, bought, cleared of forests, made into fertile lands, improved with all kinds of trees, and erected their dwelling upon. Therefore His Right Honorable has ordered me to write this to Your Honor and to request that order be given that this action and claim formed against him may be ceased, and to allow the deed of transfer of his garden and lands taken in Cana to be executed according to equity.
