353 Thursday, 2 March 1786 Said Sonberg to be deported as a soldier to be sent to Batavia ought to be punished rigorously, it has been resolved and understood upon the proposal of the Governor by unanimous vote to deport him, Sonberg, as a soldier at nine guilders per month, and to send him as such to Batavia by the first opportunity of a ship. Thus done, resolved, and determined in the Council of Malabar in the city of Cochin on the day, month, and year aforesaid. Was signed: J. G. van Angelbeek, R. v. Harn, N. W. Beijts, J. Saturday, 4 March 1786 In the morning at eight o'clock, all present except Willem van Haeften due to indisposition and Johan Andries Scheitz, being on a trip to Surat. The ship De Batavier arrived here yesterday evening from Batavia, and received therewith 354 March 1786 Saturday the 4th brought here with the Batavier. Receipt of the Batavian letters Resolves to let what has been written serve for information. Report that the auction account is settled. Insertion thereof. Two letter packets having been received, the same were opened in this meeting, and therein were found four original letters from Their High Excellencies, the High Indian Government in Batavia, of 6 and 8 October, 25 November, and 2 December 1785, with their enclosures; and after reading of the same it was decided to let what was written therein serve for guidance, and to keep a record thereof in these minutes. After resumption of a report from the Honorable Head Administrator Reinier van Harn, stating that the auction account is balanced, it was approved and understood to insert the same into these minutes. Fomnbauer, Jacob Kraus, in the margin, Cochin the 3rd of April 1786. Sea Captain Jan Janssen Laurets commanding the Company's ship the Batavier having made known by a petition that several articles for use on his ship have become broken and unserviceable, requesting to have others in their stead and that the repairable articles be repaired, the ship caulked on the inside, Resolution to grant the request and report submitted in that regard Tuesday the 11th of April 1786 caulked, and some further goods and rations be provided, and having further seen hereupon the report of the Equipment Master Johannis van Blankenberg, who examined the said request and declared that these items ought to be provided and remedied, it has thus been approved and agreed to grant the request of the said captain as it lies, and to insert the request here below together with the report. The Kottar merchant Sangara Koemara Seeti had a vessel built at Zorka and sent the same to Koilang to ask for a pass in order subsequently to send it to Laroe and there take in pepper. The Koilang chief, considering that request as very contrary to the contract concluded with Your Highness, gave us notice thereof and requested our orders. We were of opinion that the said merchant must be ignorant that no pepper may be transported out of Your Highness's country, and therefore we wrote to the chief that if he wished to transport pepper with that vessel, not to grant him a pass, but if he promised not to do so, then to issue the necessary pass. He thereupon promised the chief not to take any pepper into his vessel, and thereupon the chief let him go with a pass. Yet contrary to that promise he bought pepper at Paroe, shipped it off in his vessel, and wishing to depart therewith from there, our guard-dhonies detained him and brought him up to Koilan. I am assured that Your Noble Right Honorable, obtaining the true information thereof, will cause no hindrance to the transport of pepper to the lands where my subjects live, which was sent by freight with the vessels of the merchants, by virtue of the close alliance existing between me and the Noble Company.
