1773 The 20 December In the city of Cochin Yet, my esteemed King, how I have been deceived once again, about which I complain to Your Highness in the strongest terms. Coemara Poela gave Your Highness the assurance that the 3000 Candijlen from the South could be delivered; upon this Your Highness then also gave your royal word. Furthermore, Coemara Poela gave me, on his word of honour in the presence of the Jew David, the Paliath Achan, Ananda Mallen, my first interpreter Van Tongeren, and other servants, the most solemn assurance thereof, adding that pepper would be delivered to no one, nor would any pepper be sent to Coromandel, before the full 3000 Candijlen had first been brought to the scales of the Company. Yet, having recently arrived here to settle the pepper accounts, he informed me that only 2377½ Candijlen had been delivered, so that there are still 622½ Candijlen lacking, but that he had been unable to deliver any more, under the usual pretexts of crop failure, drought, and similar excuses, which might pass for once with someone who arrives newly as a stranger to Malabar, but not with me, who has investigated everything and knows as well as anyone where all the pepper goes, and why the Company does not receive what it ought to have. What will people in Batavia have to think of me now? Shall I not bear the reputation of occupying myself with lies, which is one of the most shameful qualities in a common person, let alone in a public official? Now the full quantity of pepper will be demanded of me. However, since Your Highness has had me complimented through Coemara Poela on the occasion of my daughter's marriage and sent gifts to the young couple, and I intend to send a return embassy for this, I shall on that occasion have my envoys confer further with Your Highness concerning these matters. I have waited with that embassy until the Paliath Achan, who told me he must soon go to Your Highness, would undertake the journey, in order to employ him in the aforementioned commission as well, the more so because he not only knows of all these matters, but actually was also present last year to confer with Your Highness about the pepper, and was also present when it was assured and promised, both there and here, that the 3000 Candijlen would be delivered without fail. However, because I am uncertain whether Your Highness is aware that I have been so misled again, and I also do not know what people will meanwhile seek to make Your Highness believe in order to put a fine face on this meager pepper delivery, I have deemed it necessary to give Your Highness prior notice hereof by this letter, as I am always accustomed to taking the direct path; and so that this letter will come into Your Highness's hands, I have requested Ananda Mallen to deliver this letter to Your Highness in person. Because the necessary coolies cannot be obtained daily hereabouts for the service of the Honorable Company, the argatto goes thither in person to bring the coolies from Alape and Manicoorde here, requesting your honor to lend him a helping hand therein, and to have the necessary coolies provided here.
