Company a Lot measuring 351¾. gessen, with a Bamboo house standing thereon with a tiled shed, situated in the quarter Naanpoera, just outside the South West Land Gate of the wharf, immediately adjacent to the brick house that is being built there by the same on account of the Company, and that with the charges for a sum of ro/a 1037:30. with the request that the same may be approved, and we be authorized to write off the same, we proceed to the Correspondence that we have properly maintained with the Western Offices, and which currently provides us with no other material for communication than that we have satisfied, with the Veldhoen, the small requisition received by a Malabar letter of 26. febr: 1771., while thus far no opportunity has been granted to us from there to demonstrate our due obedience to Your High Noble Lordships' command of 1. Xber: past, with regard to the dispatch of funds thither; And that we have requested the Ceylon ministers, along with the communication that the debt incurred there by the English Free Merchant James Stevens was about to be paid, to inform us annually in their letters with which Ships the Surat returns are dispatched each time from Gale to the Fatherland, as this will enable us, upon the Receipt of any home indemnifications for Linens found short, where it is only mentioned, without the year, with which ships they were brought, to see immediately when and by whom those goods were delivered, and who packed them as the Bazaar Deputies, which we currently always have to guess. With regard to the Foreign nations, and among them Principally the English, since we have had no negotiations with the French and Portuguese, we take the liberty, with respect to the dispute had with them and the Governor of this city over the outgoing customs duty, in continuation of what we already reported regarding this in our previous respectful letter of 14. xber: 1771. and the Post scriptum of the 23. ditto, to note that since the English and the Nabab, notwithstanding that on the 20th of that month they had agreed to clear the returns sent per Alkemade according to the old method, continued to persist in their demand to have the clearance of the goods being sent done henceforth and pursuant to an appraisal by their servants, we, in our meeting of 18. Jann: of this year—in order to prevent the English from succeeding in their intention to assess our goods according to their arbitrary pleasure and to demand the duty accordingly, since indeed all demonstrations made of our right and that the duties were not being defrauded made just as much impression on these Gentlemen as music on the deaf, and it was entirely unadvisable to pay the same according to the invoice prices, because one would thereby always be forced to hand over to our Competitors a Copy of the Company's papers and prices—had to resolve to offer the toll authorities that we would in the future deliver the same in kind with regard to the goods being sent, as this could reassure them in every respect that no fraud was being committed therein, while the Hon. Company would nevertheless by this means pay no more than what was truly due, in such manner as is detailed at length in our resolution of that day. Following which, this proposal having then been made to the English ministry by a missive registered in the same resolution and dated the 21. of that month, we first received, after the Chief Administrator and Warehouse Master had been sent on a Commission to Mr Price in order to insist that the customs clearance be left according to the old method, or otherwise to embrace the proposed manner, and the said Mr Price had declared to them that the Nabab would be satisfied with the receipt of the duties in kind if only a means could be found to convert the goods which our Company would thereby pay in kind back into cash, since there were among them many wares that could not be sold here, on 2. febr: the answer from the aforementioned British ministry, as in our resolution of 3. febr:, where this entire affair is also detailed circumstantially, and to which we request permission to be allowed to refer here. and from many other circumstances it appeared that the English, who were once again playing the leading role behind the screen of the Governor here, were determined to oppose the customing of goods on the old footing, we resolved on the aforementioned day to embrace the method of realization proposed by Mr Price to the aforementioned commissioners, consisting therein that as soon as the toll had been delivered in kind by the Company, the suppliers of these goods would be bound to take back those same surrendered goods at the same prices for which they made the supply, which consequently must be stated by them, and that, if it should happen that the goods paid for toll as aforesaid were deemed to be worth more than the cost stated by their suppliers, that difference shall be settled by impartial merchants, and of the difference that might be found between the declaration and valuation, 2½ per cent above the stated value shall be paid by the supplier of the goods, as the most equitable which one could expect in the present state of the Surat government, since the Company can thereby never pay more than its exact obligation; though first to try whether one could not delay this matter until we could be reinforced here around upcoming October with Your High Noblenesses' orders. However, all the attempts made to that end, and detailed in our aforesaid resolution, having been in vain, we had to decide to have the goods sent by the Veldhoen customed according to this method, and subsequently having sent off again to the more-mentioned English ministry the letter incorporated in our resolution of the 14th of February, we finally—and after the first-signatory had urged Mr Price countless times for a written reply—received back on the 15th of this month the missive inserted in the resolution of that day; and while the previously related method has thereby been determined and established for the future, this matter has thus been settled and put on a firm and good footing for the future, while the Nabob has waived his previously made monetary demand. We therefore hope that the conduct we have maintained in this will meet with Your High Noblenesses' high approval, as well as that we have now, after much effort expended, brought it so far that the English ministry at Bombay has undertaken to pay the debt incurred by the free merchant of that nation at Punto gale upon the stranding of his small ship, the Industrie, as appears from a small letter received from the Surat ministry of the 1st of February, entered under the resolution of the 3rd, and we would have already received the same, had not a difference of 30:—. rupees been found in the reciprocal accounts, the payment of this debt having been offered at rupees 1018:-, whereas according to the letter from the Ceylon ministry in their letter of the 3rd of February 1766, the same was to amount to ƒ1572:—:—, which indeed makes 1048:—. rupees. The English commander of the vessels Mr Hol, having seen fit on the 18th of October of the past year to appear with 5 or 6 Sepoys at our wharf and before the military guard, demanding back from there a certain sailor who had deserted from his vessels and defected to us, with threats that if they did not return him voluntarily, he would remove the same from the guard, the first-signatory had satisfaction demanded from the then English Chief Mr Drapper for this, as a public act of violence committed on our territory; and having subsequently had this demand repeated by a public commission, this had the result that the aforesaid Mr Drapper bound himself to reproach the aforesaid Commander on this account, and to send him to the first-signatory to apologize, just as the aforesaid Commander, assisted by the English secretary, then also duly asked the Director for an apology on the 2nd of November, with expressions of regret felt over this his mistake, as is described in more detail in our resolutions of the 28th of October and 5th of November. And while with regard to the native princes we have nothing further to report than that we have maintained correspondence with the same through expressions of good friendship, and without our having had any other disputes with them, as the accompanying translation book also bears witness, we have thus come to the end of this letter, hoping that it may please Your High Noblenesses to approve our aforementioned actions with your supreme approval, while we still take the liberty to let follow here a memorandum of the cargo laden in the bearer of this, to which we wish a speedy and prosperous voyage. After we had the honor to dispatch our respectful letter of the 22nd of September last, the duplicate of which accompanies this via Bengal, to Your High Noble Persons, we found ourselves honored on the 14th of October following with the arrival of the Company's ships 's Compagnies Welvaaren and Walcheren, the first with eleven dead and 7 sick, and the latter with seven dead and 8 sick, by the receipt of Your High Noble Persons' venerated letter of the 14th of August prior, in respectful reply to which we take the liberty to report with due respect. After first, according to custom, giving place here to the recently received extract from the Homeland General Letter, dated the 2nd of October 1771, with the respectful answer set down by us in response to it. Extract from the Extract General Letter written by the Noble Right Honorable Lords Seventeen in the Homeland to Their High Nobilities the Governor-General and the Councilors of the Indies in Batavia, dated the 2nd of October 1771, containing the matter of Surat: In Surat in the year 1768/1769 the sale of trade goods was very low, both in terms of the quantity of the goods sold, as well as with respect to the low price for which some articles, especially sugar and tin, were turned over. And to this diminished sale, the large remaining stock of merchandise that was in the warehouses as of the last of August 1768, added to what has since been imported both on the Company's account and by private individuals, can certainly have contributed. We therefore do not reject the reasons that the Ministers have given for that diminished turnover, and we also judge that the conditions upon which they sold the goods in 1769 are to be preferred over those upon which the sale was made the year before. But we must nevertheless remark thereupon that those conditions have been of little benefit to the Company, considering that the brokers for that reason offered that much lower a price for the goods, and despite that, on their part, they have not fulfilled those conditions within the time stipulated in the aforementioned contract, but whether that diminished sale must be attributed solely In the financial year of 1768/1769 there were delivered at Surat 3,700,025 lb of powdered sugar, and thus indeed 1,238,304 lb more than in any of the previous five years on average, and among the aforesaid quantity were found 1,969,725 5/8 lb of which the profits were accounted for in 1766/1767, and 1,546,930 lb of which the profits had already been taken in 1765/1768, and only 253,419 lb from the import of this financial year. Which large remaining stocks of the old import, up to 317,709 lb before this financial year, also having worked primarily as the cause that no better prices for the sugar and tin could be obtained at that time, we take the liberty in this respect to refer further to our respectful answer to the Extract from the Homeland Letter of the 25th of September 1770, inserted into our humble letter to Your High Noble Persons of the 14th of December 1771. 57 the 14th April 1770 We therefore fully conform also to what Your Honor has written to the Ministers in that regard, in the expectation that they will henceforth formulate their demands with more attentiveness and deliberation than they did in their formal Petitions for sugar, Tin, and iron for the Year 1769/70, and above all that they will not consider the sending back of Merchandise as an appropriate means to clear the warehouses, and on that ground make a demand again for that same sort of goods at the first opportunity, as was recently done with regard to the iron, whether solely due to the aforesaid circumstances or whether other causes also contributed thereto; we believe in any case, along with Your Honor, that an advance of 57 1/8 per cent on the sugar and 16 3/8 per cent on the Tin is too low to be able to trade long in Souratta in that manner. In this, we will always endeavor to comply to the best of our ability. It cannot possibly be prevented that some merchandise upon its receipt here has fallen far below those prices which it would have fetched at the time the Demand was formulated, while it frequently happens here that such domestic and Indian products in which other Nations, and especially the British, trade alongside us—such as iron, Swedish copper, red lead, etc., as well as sugar and Tin—are at very good prices upon the formulating of our formal Demand on the Ultimo of March of each year, and that the supply thereof by them at nearby Bombay in the following August and September is so plentiful that one has much trouble to dispose of them with any passable profits. 58 127 In which, as well as in some other articles, we have seen with pleasure that Your Honor has made the necessary redress. The order to make known in the Demands not only those unsold goods, but also those which according to the Contracts should have been collected, will be very useful in order to judge properly the remnants remaining there, and to regulate the fulfillment of those Demands accordingly. No less necessary do we judge the care and caution which Your Honor has recommended to the Ministers not to give too much Credit to the merchants, and it is not without reflection that, as appears from the noted resolution of the Ministers of the 22nd November 1768, the debt of the Brokers, which on the Ultimo of October had only amounted to rupees 29097:—, climbed in such a manner under the administration of Director Bosman that it amounted on the Ultimo of November to rupees 81147:—, and on the Ultimo of March 1769 to rupees 205904:—. Through the Method introduced here in Souratta in the Year 1764 of debiting the Brokers on the Ultimo of August of each book year for the entire amount of the Merchandise that was carried forward as remnants, and successively crediting the same Brokers for what they paid into the treasury against it, one could never discover their true Debit until after all the goods were weighed out and the warehouses emptied; whereas now, since that Method was changed in 1769, and the Brokers are thus debited on the Ultimo of each Month for the amount of the goods that were weighed out to them in that time, and credited for what they have paid in Cash, one can discover at a glance not only how much their actual debt amounts to, but also how large the true remnants in the warehouses are; and according to this first-mentioned manner, the Brokers stood on the Ultimo of August 1768 in the trade books of this Directorate on their first account Credited for ƒ23877:13:—, while on their second account they were indeed Debited for ƒ948068:3:—, and thus the alongside-mentioned annotation by resolution of the 22nd November 1768 has shown that error.

demonstrated that the Brokers, between September and the end of October, had collected more than they had paid, the said sum of 29097 rupees not having removed the fact that the aforementioned Courtoirs, as of the end of the said month, were debited in the trade books for f 769390:10:-, which sum by the end of August 1769 was already reduced to f 381322:9:-, and amounted at the end of August 1770 to f 182049:7:-, and is now reduced to f 101286:-:-, although, on the other hand, one was certainly forced once again to credit the Merchants on their new account. And at the end of November of that year, it was still as large as 175549 rupees. This is so evident that in these times it is practically impossible for the Company to conduct its trade in Surat without such servants, since they not only know best which of the merchants can be safely trusted, but one is also, solely by trading through them, able to keep both the Native Rulers and especially the English and those under their protection out of the Company's trade, whilst it is an absolute impossibility to preserve that trade from a general decline in these times, when, through the bankruptcies among our aforementioned competitors and other merchants, it has been running to ruin for 23 years, unless one grants the said servants an extraordinary credit, just as this has been necessary for trade at this place from all times past, in such manner as has been clearly and circumstantially demonstrated in the posthumous Memoir of the Councillor Extraordinary and Director of Surat, Taillefert, under the main section of the sale from 199 to 218, although other governors have indeed wished to conceal this. Yet, in order to have as much security as is in any way obtainable, it was stipulated in the Contract of Sale of 13 March 1770, article 7, that before and prior to the delivery of the goods, the Brokers must hand over to the Director a bond of the Merchants to whom they have resold the goods, stipulating that they shall pay the pledged moneys to the Company's moneychanger, so that these may be counted into the treasury by him on behalf of the Brokers. We consider, indeed, that according to the present state of affairs in Surat, the Company's trade could hardly be conducted without the intervention of the Brokers, and that, in order to promote the sales of the goods, some credit must be granted to those people. However, it is by no means advisable to extend that credit as far as the Ministers have recently done, wherefore we also trust that they will take care that the Company remains preserved from loss. Concerning the Purchases, we shall, with regard to the returns for the Netherlands, refer as usual to our Demand, and leaving to you that which concerns the fulfillment of the Indies Petitions, we shall on this point now only mention that we expect Director Bosman, in fulfilling the demanded goods, will give actual proof of the particular care and knowledge concerning the textile purchases which he says the post of Head Administrator has caused him to have and acquire, in order thereby, and through further good administration of this Directorship, to confirm in deed his so frequently repeated assurances: That all his efforts and actions will never have any other aim than the promotion of the Company's greatest advantage, and that he will ever look after its interests with uninterrupted zeal and loyalty. Since the Trade Books of this Directorship for the year 1768/1769, according to the Ministers' despatches of 20 December 1769, were not closed at that time, we still look forward to receiving the formal statement of accounts for that year. Meanwhile, from what the ministers say of it, we can easily gather. The annual petitions, ever since the administration of the undersigned Director, having always been fulfilled in good and sound textiles of the required assortments, just as the Demand for this year is forwarded without a single piece excepted with the bearer of this, he hopes that this will serve for some satisfaction to his Highly Esteemed Paymasters, as well as that in contracting for those goods he has had the fortune to lower all prices below the preceding ones. This statement of accounts having been examined at our session of 19 February 1770 by the Head Administrator Sluysken, it was found thereby that the profits of the financial year 1768/1769 would have exceeded those of the previous year by as much as f 43240:6:8, were it not that in this financial year.

brought. to form according to this method as determined by the Political Council's resolution of 31 December 1764, and thus to have to bring back into observance; which he has carried away the approval of his high superiors that this statement, with regard to the profits achieved, initially realized profits not previously brought to the Honorable Company's profit account in 176 6/e and 176 7/8, will by no means be favorable. And however much the matter is considered indifferent in itself, under what year the profits are booked as long as they are enjoyed, yet we can by no means approve that in 176 7/8 the profits were brought on merchandises that were only collected and paid for in the following year, since such is entirely improper and directly contrary to the order of 1758. But it appears that Director Bosman, who as Trade Bookkeeper drew up the financial statement of that financial year and as incoming Director submitted the same at the session of 22 November 1768, did not judge at that time that the aforementioned profits did not belong under that financial year; for otherwise he, along with the other members of the Political Council, could not have declared that the aforesaid writing demonstrated the true state of the Company's trade and establishment in that year. And however indifferent it may be for the Honorable Company under what date the profits are booked, provided they are only enjoyed, it nevertheless remains our humble opinion certain that such a method, as was introduced in that regard here in the year 1764, cannot be good, because those goods from which the profits are calculated in this manner nevertheless often remain lying for two years thereafter at the risk of the Honorable Company, whereby the warehouses are crammed with merchandise without any balances on the books, and the same company during all that time runs the risk of losing through accidents of fire etc. not only its advanced capital, but even those profits which had long before been reported as real. The undersigned Director has always been of the opinion that the aforementioned profit accounting was contrary to the order, although as Trade Bookkeeper he was required to draw up the trade books and financial statements. He also believed, regarding the order established in 1758, with the utmost pleasure believed that the approval of his paying masters will serve to satisfaction. 61 The report that Director Bosman has given you of the obtained permission to build brick houses on the Company's wharf, as well as of the good likelihood of being able to transfer the Company's entire establishment thither, has to our regret appeared from the outcome to have been quite premature, since according to the later dispatches of December 1769 that good likelihood had entirely vanished; the work begun had to be suspended, and it was entirely uncertain whether it might be proceeded with again. to report that all the goods from the import of 1769/70 and 1770, as evidenced by the findings submitted at our session of 15 October and 24 November last, and also virtually all those of 1771/2, the spices excepted, have been cleared: finding ourselves obliged humbly to ask Your High Excellencies for pardon for our negligence in failing to make known the debt of the brokers each time in our respectful letters, which we shall henceforth strictly obey. It would have afforded us particular satisfaction if we had been in a position to inform Your High Excellencies that it had considerably decreased, now amounting to ra - - - - - - and thus ra. - - - less than at the end of August 1771; but we have, to our extreme regret, been unable to do so on account of the calamities that Souratta has undergone for some time, and the numerous bankruptcies among the principal merchants, while one was indeed forced to extend credit if one did not wish to remain completely idle and let trade continue, as we have argued in the reply inserted above to the Extract of the Letter from the Fatherland. Nevertheless, in order to satisfy the reasonable desire of Your High Excellencies and to bring the brokers, if at all possible, onto solid ground, we have made the said servants acquainted at our meeting of 30 October with Your High Excellencies' well-founded resentment, and ordered them to see to it that their debt is satisfied the sooner the better, as our resolution adopted at that time shows; while on the same day we decided for the present not to allow any merchandise to be delivered to these servants before the amounts thereof shall have been paid to the Company's moneychanger, in order to try whether this method can be introduced so as to be covered thereby in all respects in the future, while our first concern will be to collect the aforementioned debts with the utmost speed. We express our true gratitude to Your High Excellencies for satisfying, as far as possible, our demand for merchandise and necessities for this year 1772/3, however much we regret that we could not be supplied with the requested 10000 cannassers of powdered sugar, as the market for that sweet has risen so much since our respectful letter of 19 April that on the 8th of this month we resolved to proceed to its sale, because a reasonable bid was then made to us for it, such that, although it was not impossible that it might rise still higher in price, we nevertheless considered we must have just as much fear of a price decrease in case it happened, as has since occurred, that the three ships expected from Batavia at Bombaij, or one of them, should arrive with that sweet. Accordingly, as evidenced by our resolution of that day, we have transferred to the brokers all the spices for the set prices, the powdered sugar for 10 1/40, the candy sugar for 15 19/30, and the red lead for 12/10 rupees, all per 100 pounds net and after deduction of 3 percent discount and 1½ brokerage, on this condition: that the said merchandise, except the spices, must be cleared before the end of December 1773, and that they shall receive no goods before the amounts thereof have been paid to the moneychanger. And thus hoping that this sale made, as yielding fully 70¼ percent on the sugar, will be to Your High Excellencies' satisfaction, we have left the camphor, the gu silver, and Japanese copper as yet unsold, because we hope that their prices—which are currently completely unacceptable with regard to the first two articles and also not very favorable regarding the last, caused by the large importation by the English of a quantity of 36000 maon of Swedish copper, all cast in bars in the same manner as the Japanese—will before long rise. We settled the contracts for the return shipments for the year 1771 with their suppliers at the customary time, and take the liberty of offering Your High Excellencies our thanks for the favorable arrangements enabling us to make these same contracts early every year, as we would also have made a beginning therewith, since we fear that the seizure and pillaging of Brootchia by the English will cause us quite a few obstacles here, were it not that we must still wait for the samples from the Netherlands. And we shall have the excessive house rent received by the warehouse keeper, amounting to 756:-- rupees, counted back into the treasury, while the sum of 5091:6:-- guilders Dutch money, which previously stood in our books to the credit of the estate of the deceased Paulus Jan Wenkink, is credited to Batavia in the invoice departing today, in order to be paid out there to the Board of Orphan Masters. Hoping for Your Right Noblenesses' favorable interpretation, we have granted the Orphan Masters here, upon their urgent request made at our meeting of the 14th of November, permission to pay into the treasury a sum of 129 1/3 rupees, which had been received for the Orphan Chamber at the cost of the chief surgeon of this Directorate, Pieter van der Sprenkel, in order that it be credited to the capital in the same manner as the aforementioned amount of the estate of Wenkink, as is likewise done with the transmitted invoice, as well as a small sum of 33 1/3 rupees also paid into the treasury by the aforementioned Orphan Masters, with humble requests that it may please Your Right Noblenesses to have the first-mentioned sum paid to the Orphan Masters and the last-mentioned small amount to the Diaconate at Batavia. The English Ministry having finally paid the debt of James Stevens to the full amount of 1048:-- rupees, as appears from the minutes of our resolution of the 13th of June, we have credited the same to the Government of Ceylon via the bearer of this letter. And henceforth we shall retain the rent of the lodge at Brootchia in settlement of the debit of the brokers, the more so as we have much reason to assume that now that the English have captured this city by force of arms, they will soon seek to make our stay there wearisome, and that if matters remain on this footing there, we shall also have little further use for this office. Thus we shall also, in obedient compliance, send over by the next vessel three clerks who are serving here above the fixed number, although they are sorely needed; whereupon, after deducting the dispenser, first clerk, second at the warehouses, and the secret clerk of the Director, we will have only 10 clerks on hand, including among them the translator and the third at the warehouses; and for which reason we solicit Your Right Noblenesses' permission to always be allowed to have two soldiers or sailors here who perform clerical work, since the Company bears only a very small expense thereby, and it is otherwise impossible for us to get the written work finished in due time. The Junior Merchant Van Cetters having returned to Brootchia according to our resolution of the 7th of November, where he acquited himself properly in defending the Company's privileges during the incidents that occurred there, to be reported hereafter, we have the honor hereby to present to Your Right Noblenesses in original a certain petition submitted by the titular Junior Merchant Frans Bernard Zimmerman at our meeting of the 8th of this month and addressed to Your Right Noblenesses to obtain the effective rank and salary of Junior Merchant, in regard to which we take the liberty, on account of the man's long-standing and good services, urgently to request Your Right Noblenesses to give favorable consideration thereto. And just as we do not fail to guard by all means against the desertion of the Company's servants, and some [illegible] Württemberg men who deserted from the English service and were conversely engaged by us as soldiers are crossing over with the bearer of this; so we shall also assist the five Banjarmasin pilgrims mentioned in Your Right Excellencies' esteemed letter with the necessary provisions whenever they request them, and charge these amounts to Batavia. Having herewith punctually answered Your Right Excellencies' aforementioned letter, we shall take the further remarks made therein, as well as the orders and regulations appended thereto—all duly received by us according to the registers and cited by way of extract in our resolution of the frequently mentioned 30th of October, requiring no special response in this instance—for our obedient observance; and we take the liberty of briefly bringing to Your Right Excellencies' notice the following occurrences, the report of which we could not well postpone until our general description of next April, as well as the dealings with the bearer of this. have made and how they mistreated the said Company's servants and their subordinates there, as well as violated the right of the Noble Company and its possessions and committed the greatest violence, we take the liberty to refer thereto in all respect, and merely to note here that we, in our meeting of the 1st and 3rd of this month, judged all these acts of violence—such as, among others, the shooting through in cold blood of two of the Company's native soldiers or sepoys, who had been sent along with the Broach broker when he conveyed a letter from the servants to the Head of the English Army and had entered the camp under their Honor's safeguard; the orderly bombardment and subsequent occupation of the Company's lodge by armed troops; the carrying away under arrest of our servants and broker; the breaking open of the Company's warehouses by force and despite all protests from the servants; and finally the public plundering and carrying away of the goods of the Company's subordinates, without ever having made any prior demands or claims thereto—to be of such a nature and weight that we have ordered the servants there to formally and in writing protest against it for and on behalf of the Noble Dutch Company, as it has fully appeared to us from the declarations and evidence sent from there by the servants that they have given not the least reason for such utterly brutal treatment, which is no longer known among Christian nations; however much these British now also seek to color this their unlawful conduct with the fury of the soldier, and that they allegedly received reports that goods of the Nabab and his adherents were hidden in our lodge, since the circumstances nevertheless demonstrate the contrary thereof; aside from and besides the fact that, in the latter case, and even if the broker had hidden some few goods of his poor neighbors in his name in the said lodge, the English were obliged to claim them without committing such open hostilities, without that giving them the right to openly violate the Company's territory. And the said protest having accordingly been dispatched on the 5th of this month to the Heads of the English Army at Broach aforementioned, without any answer or redress having followed upon it to date, we resolved in our meeting on the 17th of this month to lodge our complaints regarding this with the Bombay Ministry, and shall not fail to inform Your High Nobilities of its outcome in our letter to be sent this coming April, alongside the forwarding of all the papers and evidence relating to this case; meanwhile, we cannot conceal our fear that the said Gentlemen will endeavor to make us move from there, or at least make it so bitter for us that it will be impossible for us to maintain ourselves there, just as the statement on behalf of Colonel and Head there Gordon, noted in our resolution of the 1st of this month—namely, that the previous Nabab had promised them to grant no other nation any stay in Broach—most clearly demonstrates. Respectful Answer to the accompanying Requisition for the Year 1772, dated Amsterdam the 13th of October Anno 1770, received at Batavia the 9th of June 1771, and here on the 19th of October following. Honorable, Right Esteemed Lords: The Director having finally, and after having been in negotiations for more than two months with the Company's usual linen suppliers, as appears from the notes in our Resolutions of the 24th of February as well as the 5th and the 21st of March last, brought matters so far that all the cotton cloths and yarns could be contracted with a price reduction of 2½ percent on the previous year's, and in regard to the fine chelas, long 11¾ to 12, wide 1 1/3 to 1 2/8, at fully 7 percent below the price paid for them in Anno 1770, we hope that this will be to the satisfaction of Your Honorable, Right Esteemed Lordships, as well as that we are fulfilling the entire requisition, not a single piece excepted, in good and suitable assortments, for the procurement of which we have left nothing unattempted, as we have the honor to note specifically below for each item: 6000 lb catechu demanded on this requisition was, on the date of 22 December Anno 1771, by the Honorable Company's ship Alkemade, transported from here to Ceylon in 12 chests No. 1 to 12; and the equal quantity now being shipped and sent in the Honorable Company's ship 's Welvaaren in fulfillment of the requisition for the year 1773 for transport to the said island. In 10 packs No. 41 to 50, there are also sent from here to Cijlon with the same vessel, the Honourable Company's Welvaaren, namely 900 pieces in 9 packs No. 41 to 49, packed with 10 blue, 30 red, 10 purple, 40 white, and 10 green grounds, and 100 pieces laid down in pack No. 50, consisting of 14 blue, 32 red, 12 purple, 38 white, and 4 green grounds. 1000 pieces of chintz Amed Maadse of 17 Wisa. Chintz of Amed Abat, length 12½, breadth 1½. 1000, say one thousand pieces. Assorted per bale of 100 pieces: 40 pieces white grounds 30 pieces red grounds 10 pieces green grounds, not patchy 10 pieces purple grounds 10 pieces blue grounds 100 pieces. Those that we received this year are reasonably satisfactory in cloth, but among the designs there must be more tendrils. We therefore recommend paying the necessary attention in this regard and observing that the quality of these sorts must be much better than that of the chintzes of Souratta, and very neatly painted, all the flowers with double red and the purple with double purple, taking good care that there are no more than 50 pieces among the said parcel of 1000 pieces of a large tendril design on white grounds. 2000 pieces, say two thousand pieces of good quality, half red and half white. We have previously sent Your Honours samples of this item, as it is most in demand here, and further stated our remarks regarding it. We can currently obtain no satisfactory ones, wherefore we must content ourselves with the description. First, for the most part small designs must be sent, if possible with 10 packs No. 51 to 60 with 1/3 white and 2/3 red grounds packed in each bale. These also go with all the aforementioned chintzes in the said vessel for further shipment from here over to the frequently mentioned island of Ceijlon. The orders regarding the packing of the different coloured grounds have been observed as much as possible with the Surat chintzes of 16 Wiesa, with the Surat diverse patterns, and Amed Abaadse of 17 Wiesa, but with the chintzes Chiaboutrias fully observed. We flatter ourselves that regarding the further orders of Your Honours concerning the 2000 pieces of chintz Chiaboutria broad, small printed cloths, we have acted to satisfaction. With the chintzes requested in this demand, which can only be sent in the autumn of 1773, they are engaged with the utmost attention in having the same printed completely according to the order.
