Meanwhile, their debts as of the end of August last were still large, the old being rop=s 82385. 38 and the new 86060. 21, thus together rop=s 168447:10; which debit in our last respectful letters dispatched to Your High Mightinesses was erroneously stated as Rop=s 159947:11: It has been a particular satisfaction to us that the prices stipulated in anno passato for the powder and candy sugar, as well as the red lead, have given Your High Mightinesses the desired pleasure, and we live in hope that the sale of the Japanese bar copper on 6 January of this year at rop=s 57:20 per 100 pounds net, or at a surplus profit of 140 p=r C=to, in consideration of the distressful state of the times, will likewise not have been disagreeable; but since, after dispatching our aforementioned General Description of 30 April, as shown by what was communicated in our respectful letter of 1 October, no acceptable prices have been offered for the camphor and the quicksilver, at least not equal to the limit set upon them by Your High Mightinesses, we have not dared to dispose of them, but have left them resting in the Company's warehouses until we should be strengthened in that regard by Your Highness's further orders. Meanwhile, with respect to the demanded elucidation, we have the honor most obediently to reply that at this office, according to an established custom, in the drawing up of the requisition, such merchandise that has not yet been sold to the brokers is always stated in the column of the latest import, and not in that of the remnants, and that such is also the reason why, in the requisition dispatched by the packet dated 12 Decembr 1772, concerning the Japanese copper, the camphor, and the quicksilver unsold at that time, it was also handled in such a manner. The Extract of the Patriarchal Despatches of 25 October 1764 cited by the Right Honorable Lords Majors and Your High Mightinesses, whereby it was said to have been ordered to send annually both to the Netherlands and to Batavia an accurate account current of the sugar being sold, is nowhere to be found here at the secretariat, and thus, having possibly erroneously remained among the papers of the Right Honorable Jenft, Extraordinary Councilor /:J: G:/, we have in no other manner been able to comply with what was ordered in that respect, than to order our Chief Administrator at the session of 27 October to prepare such required accounts to the best of his ability; and as he also, in our further meeting of 18 November, submitted a report along with 8 copies of accounts of the sugar sold here since the year 1765 (when it is supposed that the aforesaid Extract arrived here) up to 577 2/3, we have the honor humbly to offer the same to Your High Mightinesses herewith, while its duplicates are dispatched with the bearer of this in duplicate via Ceylon to the motherland; yet we most humbly request Your High Mightinesses that at the first opportunity a copy of the aforesaid Extract may be sent hither, to serve subsequently for guidance and dutiful observance. 72 23 124 manifested displeasure, regarding the increase of 4½ p.c. permitted on the procurement contract of the year 1770, is set down in the aforementioned extract of the Missive from the Homeland, we most humbly request Your Right Noble Lordships to be persuaded that we, in accordance with the duty owed by faithful and honor-loving servants, have never proceeded in the purchase of merchandise otherwise than with the greatest care and attentiveness, which shall remain inseparably established with us, while we assure Your Right Noble Lordships in the most solemn manner that nothing will be left untried which might in any way serve, in these very oppressive times and circumstances, to increase profits and reduce expenses, as well as to bring the debtors and outstanding accounts to settlement as soon as possible. Furthermore, expressing our particular gratitude to Your Right Noble Lordships for the favorably granted write-off of 150 moeda masonry lime and 71600 pieces of bricks, which were charged as compensation to the former Master of Equipage van der Kuijl, we have resolved at the aforementioned meeting of 27 October to effect the same under the ultimate date of August of the expired fiscal year 1771/1772, and to discharge the account of the aforementioned van der Kuijl again for the amount of these materials. To the Honorable Right Respected Sir: Martinus Joan Bosman Director and Chief Commander of the Honorable Company's Trade and Affairs Together with The Council And Respected Councilors The undersigned Chief Administrator, having been ordered by your Honorable Right Respected resolution of the 27th of October last, in obedient compliance with Their High Excellencies' respected letter of the 18th of August preceding and the highly revered order of the Honorable Right Respected Gentlemen Mayors in the Generaal Missive from the Fatherland of 5 October 1772, to prepare accurate current accounts of the sugar sold here since the letter of Their Honorable High Respected of 25 September or, as the last-mentioned extract of the Missive from the Fatherland states, 25 October 1761 containing this order might have been received here, and this to the best of his ability, since at this office no such order could be traced in any missives or extracts, nor any templates; thus he now has the honor to present to your Honorable Right Respected herewith 8 accounts, beginning with the book year 1764/65, when he supposes that the said order from the Fatherland of 25 October 1764 might have been received here, and ending with the last book year Anno 1772/73, both inclusive, drawn up and calculated on the footing ordered by Their High Excellencies regarding the drawing up of the returns by the resolutions of 30 September 1768 and 16 May 1769 according to the templates attached thereto, yet with this modification: that in addition, there has been deducted from the incoming cargo first 4 per cent ship short-weight, thereafter 2½ per cent toll, and finally 2 per cent warehouse spillage, all of which is validated and remitted in kind, and from the cash sale price first 3 per cent rebate as deducted by the merchants, and thereafter 1½ per cent brokerage which is enjoyed by the brokers, hoping that the same may obtain the high approval of his high superiors. Schrippen To the Honorable Right Respected Sir Martinus Joan Bosman Director and Chief Commander Together with The Council Honorable Right Respected Sir And Respected Councilors In compliance with your Honorable Right Respected's resolution of the 27th of the past month of October, whereby you were pleased to order me, in fulfillment of the respected orders of Their High Excellencies contained in their letter of 18 August preceding, to draw up an accurate account of all expenses borne by the Honorable Company at the time of the employment of the horris De Hardlooper and De Lastdrager, together with the small vessels De Verwagting and De Jonge Petrus, for private services, as mentioned more fully in the same letter; I have the honor to submit to your Honorable Right Respected by this: That upon an exact examination of all specifications submitted in the book years 1768/69, 1769/70, and 1770/71 by both the Purser and the Equipment Overseer, it has appeared to him, regarding the horris De Hardlooper and De Lastdrager loaned to the Chief of the English, Mr. Price, on 21 April Anno 1769, as noted in your Honorable Right Respected's resolution of the 24th of that month, that by the Equipment Overseer Pleun van der Kuijl, in his monthly specification for the month of May of the same said year, there were entered for loading expenses on those two craft: For the first: rupees 64:— And for the last mentioned: rupees 30:—, totaling rupees 94:— Regarding the matter that the small vessel De Verwagting escorted some vessels of the Company's brokers to Bouwnager on 14 March Anno 1770, it has not appeared to me in any specifications that the least amount was charged for this, for the reason that the small vessels, according to the necessary custom during the time that the Company's ships are being unloaded and loaded at this roadstead, must always cruise to and from the roadstead to protect the small craft from the Cooly pirates, and they thus perform these voyages without any additional or extraordinary expenses. For the same reasons, during the escorting of the ship having sailed under the name of the undersigned and destined for Mocha and Jedda, by both small vessels on 3 April 1770, no expenses were borne other than what they would have incurred otherwise in that same month, just as nothing was entered for it in any specification.
