We have the Honor to send to Your Right Honorable Most Worships via the ship Overhout, which together with Ouwerkerk arrived here on the 10th of November last, and is now departing for Ceylon, departing to send all certain Linens and merchandise, as specified on the accompanying Extract Invoice, together amounting to a sum of f and this in compliance with Your Right Honorable Most Worships' orders of the 19th October 1773 and partly of the 15th October 1774: further, in dutiful Obedience to Your Right Honorable Most Worships' Ever revered orders contained in Their High letter to Their High Mights of the 3rd October 1774, we have these accompanied, in two Packages sewn in oilcloth in order to be divided between two ships at Ceylon, by some small bars of Swedish copper cast in small pieces just like the Japanese, but a little shorter, such as the same 76 34. was brought by the English to Bombay in the Years 1771 and 1772: in a large quantity of up to 36 to 40,000 maunds, and was sold at first sight to the Natives as real Japanese copper. While we furthermore, pursuant to that which was ordered by Their High Mights, take the liberty to present to Your Right Honorable Most Worships a specific Memorandum or summary of all such merchandise of the Fatherland as has been turned over at this Office during the last 10 Years or Since the Year 1765/66 to 1774/5, thereafter a list of the prices, as close as possible, of all European Commercial goods which have recently been brought to Bombay and here by the English and French ships and sold, whereby we at the same time to Your Right Honorable Most Worships' favorable /

Highly Honorable, Greatly Esteemed, Far-Ruling Lord, Honorable Sirs! With the arrival of the ships Ouwerkerk and Overhoud, I also saw myself honored with Your Excellencies' ever-respected separate missive of the 2nd of August of this year, and in humble reply to which I may in the first place presently be so fortunate as to bring to Your Excellencies' knowledge that the spice trade has noticeably increased since the English and the Marathas contracted an armistice, as in the past book year no less than 48576½ lb of cloves with 23381¼ lb of nutmegs, and now since the end of August well over 25736 lb of cloves and 7431 lb of nutmegs have been sold, and that the same, to my particular joy, promises a further considerable increase, if Providence might please to restore quiet and peace in these lands, and if Your Excellencies see fit to send us a good quantity of sugar annually, which contributes not a little to a good vent of the first-mentioned so precious article. It would also be desirable if I were able to impart to Your Excellencies a similar report regarding Japanese copper, but the heavy importation of Swedish copper by French ships, of which two have again been here now, and which are to be followed by two others, deprives me of this pleasure, however much I thought in the month of April last that I might flatter myself therewith. Nevertheless, I take the liberty to submit for Your Excellencies' favorable consideration whether—however much I must otherwise attest that the same copper here is still at a very low price for the present, and indeed such that what was brought in last year still lies for the most part uncollected, because the brokers cannot recover the prices paid by them—it would not be good for the service of the Honorable Company if it pleased the same to send one to two lakhs of that metal here, according as the stock over there permits, and at the same time to authorize us—in case Your Excellencies absolutely determine that it may be sold off at no less than 180 percent—to simply keep the same here unsold until such time as a favorable opportunity presents itself to attain the said advances. And since this humble proposal of mine only aims at a desire to serve the Company with all my abilities, I hope that the same may be favorably approved by Your Excellencies, in consideration that if the Company completely neglects to send Japanese copper here, the inhabitants and merchants will grow unaccustomed to its use, and will no longer give it that preference over Swedish copper which it has had until now, from which it must naturally follow that the English and French, as soon as the Company desists from its copper trade here, will gradually accustom the native to Swedish copper, and will then imperceptibly raise its prices, whereas they now sell it for its cheapness. In addition, it is to be presumed that the French, who have sailed so heavily to Surat for two years, will also soon discover that this place is by no means a gold mine for European manufactures and products, as the first ship, Le Duc de Duras, sold its haberdashery, copper, and iron for a very mediocre price, while the Government prevented it from claiming its ordnance and other ammunition goods here, and thus in all likelihood, will soon again

will desist again just as they began it unexpectedly, or at least that they will greatly reduce it, and finally that as soon as a quantity of copper is provided here, one often finds a favorable opportunity to dispose of it, while in the meantime it lies as securely as in one of the Company's offices, now that in the past year I have had the good fortune to obtain a Firman to unload all the Company's trade goods at the wharf and to store them there in good stone warehouses. Regarding which, following the context of Your High Nobilities' separate letters (as in respect of the dealings with the Marathas I humbly refer to today's general letter), I take the liberty to submit that, as soon as the great work—namely the transfer of the entire establishment to the wharf—was brought to an end, I immediately applied all my efforts both toward obtaining a written permission henceforth to be allowed to sort and pack the Company's linens and return goods on the said wharf and to ship them from there, as well as toward obtaining the privilege to unload and store all the spices and further merchandise there. However, I have not been able to obtain the former in all respects, seeing that the various interested parties in the customs, such as the Nawab and the English, each for one third, and the Marathas, both of the Peshwa and of the Gaekwad, each for 3/6 or together also for a one-third share, must necessarily all consent to it. And to which the last-mentioned could not be persuaded, out of a fear of being prejudiced in the duties on the goods that would be sorted and packed on the wharf by their co-participants, even if not on account of the Company or its servants. For, having no watchmen at the gates (whereas, on the contrary, they are present at all customs clearances etc. and keep an equal accounting of them, together with and alongside the English and the Moors), they are afraid that under the name of the goods of our suppliers, which must pass outside the city to the wharf to be sorted and packed, many others belonging to the English etc. will be exported, and they thereby prejudiced in their revenues. And thus, having to await a more favorable time with respect to the sorting and packing, I nevertheless considered that I would not properly take the service of the Noble Company to heart if I were to let slip the opportunity presenting itself at that time to obtain the priceless privilege of being allowed to unload and store all the Company's merchandise on the wharf forever, and thus to achieve the one with the other. And these were the reasons that prompted me (after I had labored in vain on both for a long time) to procure the latter privilege for the Company, without daring to wait, with regard to the 30000 roa spent for it, until I could be furnished with Your High Nobilities' highly favorable authorization. For although on the one hand I indeed feared that this conduct of mine would displease Your High Nobilities at first sight, I nevertheless held myself fully assured that Your High Nobilities' renowned equity would justify and approve my pursued conduct, as soon as you would be pleased to take into favorable consideration the priceless value of the privilege, and that the same was impossible to dispense with if we wished to see our habitation on the wharf secure and established, and not again, as in former times to the great detriment of the Company, be forced to store its precious goods within the city in scattered warehouses and expose them to continual thefts. So that I took the liberty to propose to Your High Nobilities in my humble missive of 30 December of the past year, while all letters and papers written over the years concerning this project consider it as the greatest privilege and the most advantageous that could ever be obtained in these lands, and which consideration also moved Your High Nobilities themselves, in their secret letters of 14 August 1766 and 12 August 1767, to pass and approve the expenditures made at that time by the late Councilor Extraordinary of the Indies and former Director of Surat Senff for this privilege, up to 25000 Rupees. Since the departure of the Honorable Company's ship De Vrouwe Geertruijda on the 6th of January last, and our respectful letters dispatched therewith of the 2nd prior, having had no occasion to wait upon Your High Noble Worships further, we therefore embrace the opportunity of the private grab named De Adriana, hired by the first-signed, being about to set sail toward your parts, to send to Your High Noble Worships herewith, while presenting the duplicate of our aforementioned missive according to custom and obligation, the general report of affairs of this Directorate, as such have occurred since our last description of the 10th of April of the recently past year 1774, and which have not already been treated in the aforementioned latest rescript, respectfully referring ourselves to it in order to avoid double repetitions; and proceeding thereunto, we have the honor to report, under the usual first main section of ships and vessels, that skipper Buulle upon his departure from this roadstead sent to the first-signed a declaration executed at his request by the chief officers of the ship De Vrouwe Geertruijda, to show that of the 44 small chests of quicksilver shipped in the small vessel De Jonge Petrus, four indeed were found partly and one entirely empty, while from a portion of the remainder upon transfer, the mercury discharged itself like water, so that one had work enough to check its flow within boards. We judged at the meeting of the 28th of January, where the aforementioned declaration was inserted, in order to discover the cause of this mishap, that this paper should be placed in the hands of the Warehouse Master, to serve as a report to us on this matter, as the same also did in our meeting of the 28th of February, adding an attestation of the First and Second Warehouse Assistants, to show that the said mercury, packed in 44 small chests and with a gross weight of 7887 lb, was personally weighed out by him, the Warehouse Master, to the aforementioned skipper Buulle, after having previously been properly nailed shut and secured, and that the same were subsequently brought to the pier and delivered to the officer gunner's mate; he declared further concerning this wholly as well as partial discharge of this mineral to be able to presuppose no other reasons than that the small chests must have been placed upside down and thus incorrectly in the vessel. And since we could be informed no further and better of the truth or untruth of this hypothesis than by the Commander of the vessel himself, and therefore deemed it necessary to demand his explanation on this matter, while handing over the aforementioned documents, he also complied therewith according to our resolution of the 26th of this month; but finding ourselves unable to have taken any further decisions regarding this, we have left the same deferred to Your High Noble Worships in the aforementioned meeting, and therefore take the liberty of having this accompanied among the annexes by the copies of the declaration of the ship's officers, of the report, and of the attestation of the Warehouse Master

master and his subordinates, and of the defense of the commander of the small vessel De Jonge Petrus, meanwhile we cannot refrain from adding here our humble opinion, namely that this accident cannot be attributed to any premeditated neglect of duty by anyone, but must solely be ascribed to the fact that the chests were certainly shipped bottom side up, while the aforesaid commander, according to his statement, having been unaware of what was contained in them, nor which side belonged at the bottom or top, certainly paid no regard to it, the more so because it was already late in the evening. On the occasion that we met on the 2nd of January regarding the findings on the delivered cargo of the ship De Vrouwe Geertruijde, having approved to have 119 cans of spoiled delivered beer dumped into the river, we have the honor to inform Your High Nobilities that this was fulfilled in the presence of two specially appointed commissioners, as appears from our resolution of the 28th of January and their report entered therein. The late arrival and early departure of the aforesaid vessel having prevented the pay bookkeeper from collecting the money proceeds from the estate of the boatswain Benjamin Beetjes, who died on that keel during the voyage hither, quickly enough to have still been able to properly process them in the ship's book and to credit that man for that amount, which amounts to a sum of r:o/a 2046 1/8, according to his report submitted at the session of the 11th of this month, we resolved on that day, upon his request, to have those funds counted into the treasury by him, and to charge Batavia, as this has indeed been carried out. Furthermore, with regard to the 26 Moorish seafarers who perished on the voyage to Ceylon with the ship Scholtenburg, a report having been delivered by the aforesaid pay bookkeeper, in compliance with what was resolved on the 7th of December, in our meeting of the 11th of this month, demonstrating that nothing can be recovered from the families for their back pay owed by the Honorable Company, we have, in conformity with Your High Nobilities' authorization by letter of the 31st of December 1773 and our resolution of the aforesaid 7th of December, had the amount thereof up to f 687:3:— written off in the books. While we furthermore have the honor to humbly offer to Your High Nobilities at present among the outgoing trade papers, pursuant to Your Highest revered order, an accurate statement of the goods salvaged from the wrecked ship Walckeren, as we were unable to do so with the departure of the Vrouw Geertruijda due to the shortness of time. Meanwhile we take the liberty to refer most respectfully, with regard to the aforementioned wrecking of Walcheren, to what was stated concerning this in our humble missive of the 2nd of January, with the most emphatic repeated plea that Your High Nobilities will be pleased to reflect favorably upon it, as well as upon what was alleged by us in the same letters regarding the disapproved hiring here of the private vessel De Wilhelmina for the transport of the Indian returns in the year 1773; flattering ourselves that the good intention with which we proceeded to that decision will also be regarded as such by Your High Nobilities, and that it may therefore generously please Your Highest to most graciously liberate us from the very oppressive charge on that account, for we testify once again, man for man and most solemnly and sacredly, that with this hiring we never had any other intentions than the well-being of the Honorable Company. Further, upon a petition submitted to our meeting of September 20 by the cited former Equipage Overseer van der Hegge, having approved that the ordinary regular crew for the narrow-ship De Jonge Petrus be taken into service on the 25th of that same month, and for the remaining vessels, consisting of the narrow-ship De Mosselschulp, the decked horrij Dordrecht, as well as the open De Merwe, on October 1 following, since, with a longer delay, one would have been forced, instead of good and capable sailors, to be satisfied with rejects who could not have found employment with others. We also decided in our aforementioned meeting of September 20, upon a report by the said official mentioned there, to transfer such an iron cannon of 1½ lb and 1 piece small anchor to Unserviceable Goods, and to send them to Batavia, as well as to sell at auction on a suitable occasion 50 fathoms of coir rope of 7 inches and 2 pieces gun carriages for 1½ lb cannon, which were brought back here with the narrow-ship De Mosselschulp recovered in the year 1772 from the Marhattas; the execution of this decision of ours regarding the first two items shall take place in coming December, and regarding the remainder on the first opportunity. In accordance with Your High Noblenesses' most honored order and what was decreed by us in the session of December 7, after prior announcement by placards, the open horrijs De Hoop and De Hartloper, with all their appendages, except for the ammunition goods, were publicly auctioned among others to the highest bidder; as we judged in our meeting of January 28 that it would be more advantageous to effect that sale in such a manner, and the remaining goods were nevertheless of little value to the Honorable Company; having, as appears from the extract vendue roll inserted into the Resolution of February 28, De Hoop yielded a sum of 2525 rupees and De Hartlooper 1705 rupees; while the goods removed from these small vessels in the presence of express commissioners, consisting of those from the first vessel: 4 pieces metal cannons of 8 lb 100 pieces round shot of 1 lb 1 piece copper cannon ladle of 1 lb 1 piece sponge and rammer 1 powder horn, and 1 copper priming wire, and those from the second in: 4 pieces metal cannon of 4 lb 100 pieces round shot of 8 lb 1 piece copper cannon ladle of 4 lb 2 pieces sponges and rammers of 1 lb 1 powder horn, and 1 copper priming wire, in accordance with our decision of the aforementioned date, have been entered into the books and left under the administration and accountability of the Equipage Overseer, and the aforementioned funds have already been counted into the treasury by the Head Administrator. 43 thus the second officer Sluijsker was of the opinion that, in fulfillment of the resolution of the 26th of the aforementioned month of December, when the aforementioned van der Hegge in a separate second report made known that that small keel was too severely affected by the worm from below for one to risk it on the projected voyage, from this specification—which in its entirety amounts to ro/as 1106:1, whereof in cash ro/as 765:23 and from the storehouse ro/as 339:26, such a sum of ro/as 3965½ as had been spent on the same small keel here since the 10th until the 25th of December aforesaid, and were principally expended for the making of a new spare topmast and topsail yard, a bulkhead in the hold for storing the provisions, a gallows for placing the spare spars, as well as a set of Dutch and a ditto local sails—ought to be reimbursed to the Honorable Company by the former master of equipment van der Hegge, and satisfied by his authorized agents to the same, under return however to him of those aforesaid goods which were indeed made during the aforesaid five days, but since, on account of the detention of the said Mosselschulp, have not been delivered; together with G together with having the expenses for hauling that small keel onto the shore, amounting to ro/as 140:31, borne by the Honorable Company itself, as a matter that necessarily had to take place if one wished to enable the further committee from our meeting to conduct an exact inspection; but the remaining members of the Council, referring to what had been advised by them at the session of the 2nd of January, having been of the opinion to leave it deferred to Your Right Excellencies to what extent this condemnation ought to be executed; and because the Director also adhered to his advice mentioned in the aforesaid Resolution, namely to have all expenses, without exception, paid by Hegge, it was on that day approved by majority to leave to Your Right Excellencies' revered pleasure to what extent Your Right Excellencies will please to condemn him, van der Hegge, regarding this affair; and as in all matters where one is not of a unanimous opinion everyone believes to have well-founded reasons for his own, so this also took place in this matter, and in particular the first undersigned declared 28 45 declared that he had given his aforementioned advice for no other reasons than because he deemed himself absolutely obliged thereto, on account of all the expenses now incurred having been incurred principally upon the assurances given by van der Hegge, both to him the Director and to his fellow committee members Brulle and Boelen, that the aforementioned small vessel was sound from below, and which expenses would otherwise have been spared; as well as because he, van der Hegge, having given two contradictory reports, both of which he offered to confirm with an oath, of which therefore notoriously one of the two had to be false, ought to be punished for this rashness with the aforementioned reimbursement. to fetch returns to Tamboeser, and the horrij Dordrecht departed to Brootchia for the same purpose. For the aforementioned purpose as well as for the transport of the new Factor of Brootchia Jacob Tgerman Bocquet, and the ordinary annual gifts, according to the resolution of 28 January, the smalschip De Ionge Petrus together with the horrijs Dordrecht sailed thither, as also on 30 March, as appears from the notes in the resolution of the 11th of this month. Likewise, both smalscheepen De Ionge Petrus and the Mosselschulp, together with the horrijs Dordrecht and Merwoe, and several private vessels, pursuant to the decision of 28 February and on account of the necessity mentioned therein, went to the island of Premeger to fetch a considerable quantity of heavy stones for the service of the revetment for the Honorable Company's yard, we having resolved in the aforementioned meeting, in order not to expose the Company's vessels to any perils, to have each of the two smalscheepen provided, over and above their ordinary equipment, with a spare anchor rope as requested for the undertaking, which upon their return were again properly accounted for and stored in the equipment warehouse. Finally, the number of vessels currently belonging to this Directorate consists of: One smalschip De Jonge Petrus, One smalschip Mosselschulp, One closed harij Dordrecht, One open herrij Meri, and One country boat. All of which are presently in very good condition, and which we resolved on the 14th of this month not to unrig yet during this entire month, but to keep them in service with their equipment and the crew for the same for so long, firstly because, if unrigged, one cannot entrust them with any peace of mind to the beach at Altuva, on account of the Marhattas who roam thereabouts in whole troops and might frequently set fire to them, as one had seen an example of in the year 1752 with the smalschip de Speelman; secondly, because one will need them, in case this city should remain enclosed, to obtain foodstuffs for the bad monsoon; and thirdly, because one will be most in need of them if an unexpected formal siege should take place. Finally, we also note under this heading that on 28 February, upon the request made to that end by the Director, we delivered on loan to him from the Honorable Company's stock one anchor and three grapnels. Passing herewith to the handling of the writings-in and writings-off, and in the first place of the ordinary annual ones, concerning which, as appears from our resolutions of 10 April and 20 September, on the separate reports submitted there by the Chief Administrator; to wit: The first, annexed to a memorandum drawn up by the former Warehouse Keeper Holmberg regarding the weighing-out in the period of 7 months or from 1 September 1773 to 31 March 1774 (he having made the transfer of the warehouses under the latter mentioned date) of such merchandise as was brought and sold here in the years 1771, 1771/2, 1772/3 and 1773/4, with indication of the surpluses and deficits thereof, item the remnants remaining under the aforesaid date, we have resolved to pass for writing-off in accordance with the General Regulation: 125½ lb Dutch lead 125667 lb powdered sugar 5844 lb candy sugar 436¾ lb Japanese copper in bars, and 13 lb or 8 1/8 per cent cinnamon; and also to have 33 lb dust and heads of cloves, and 128 lb mite-eaten nutmegs written off in the books to the debit of the profit account and transferred to damaged spices. And on the second, accompanied by a memorandum drawn up by the Warehouse Keeper van Citters of the merchandise weighed out to the merchant in the remaining 5 months or from 1 April to 31 August 1774 out of the lots of the years 1771/2, 1772/3 and 1773/4, to have 26 lb dust and heads of cloves, together with 90½ lb mite-eaten nutmegs, from the lot of 1772/3, written off and transferred to damaged spices, and also to send them to Batavia at the first opportunity, which was then carried out with the ship De Vrouwe Geertruijda. In like manner, a report having been submitted on 28 January by the aforementioned Chief Administrator, also accompanied by a memorandum from the just-mentioned Warehouse Keeper van Citters, regarding the occurred deficits and underweights on the remnants weighed out since 31 August aforesaid of the merchandise brought in the years 1771/2, 1772/3 and 1773/4, we have caused the said Warehouse Keeper to compensate for the 58919½ lb powdered sugar found short, and on the other hand written off to the debit of the profit account the 5778¼ lb candy sugar unaccounted for, as not exceeding the permitted 3 per cent warehouse ullage; and also to write off to the debit of the profit account the underweight on the lot of cloves brought in the year 1771/2 amounting to 1305 7/8 lb, and on the lot of nutmegs brought in the year 1772/3 at 1835 7/16 lb, making fully 2 per cent on the first and 3¼ per cent on the second quantities, together with the found 407 lb mite-eaten nutmegs, and to have the mite-eaten ones transferred to damaged spices; while, upon the request made by the just-mentioned Warehouse Keeper van Citters at the aforesaid meeting, namely to be allowed to address us by report concerning the deficit on the powdered sugar, we granted the same, and he having submitted it in the meeting of 28 February thereafter, we furthermore permitted him, for the reasons mentioned therein and specified in the aforesaid resolution, to seek his redress in this matter in such manner and from such persons as he shall deem proper. 36. and Exemptions, as recorded under the General Business of the 7th of December, were carried out according to order, while we take the liberty here most humbly to repeat the respectful applications made in our humble letter of the 2nd of January for exemption from the indemnifications and taxes imposed upon us, and most humbly to request Your High Excellencies to be pleased to cast a favorable regard upon the reasons set down therein for our exculpation. Concerning the Purchase or Gathering of the Return goods, of which those of the Year 1773 have ended and been settled, as appears from our resolution of the 5th of July, wherein the second in command Sluijsken has submitted a statement showing that more was delivered by the suppliers in sound Return goods than was received by them in money, an amount of rupees 2029, and which amounts have been applied to those of 1774, the settlement of which is also to take place shortly, we now find ourselves under the distressing necessity of having to bring to Your High Excellencies' notice how utterly unable the first undersigned has been, as appears from his communications made to us in the sessions of the 28th of February, as well as the 11th and 26th thereof, to have been able, notwithstanding all persuasions made, to induce the Linen Suppliers to contract for the Requisitions for the Year 1775, by reason of the pending Troubles, and because the Marhattas kept this city continuously blockaded, whereby all import and export of any Goods whatsoever were prevented and hindered, while they, the Suppliers, have to have the majority of goods manufactured in Brootchia, Tamboeser, Oclisser, and villages situated thereabouts, and because in and around those Places the troops of the aforesaid Nation were present in multitude, and made everything tremble before their power with robbing and plundering, and consequently they could not proceed with any peace of mind to accept the Contract. We are so fully convinced of the truth of these reasons that we have been able to bring nothing against them, but must repeatedly resolve, in the hope of a speedy change, to exercise patience, and we now have hope of finally succeeding in this nonetheless, as, according to what is noted in our abovementioned resolution of the 26th of this month, an agreement between the contending Parties is rumored, and as soon as this has taken effect, we shall likewise proceed with the contract at the most advantageous prices. Although we cannot conceal our well-founded fear of having to grant a general increase in prices, as the Linens have become extremely scarce and have considerably risen in price through the heavy export thereof by three French and several Private ships, as well as through the devastations of the cities and fields, likewise a general dearness in foodstuffs, which compels the workingman to demand an increase in daily wages. distressed times and circumstances of war, dearness, and otherwise, serves to be regarded as particularly advantageous, especially since the brokers, by the contract inserted in the aforesaid resolution, have solemnly bound themselves to collect all these goods, except for the spices—as in regard to those, just as in previous years, they could not currently bind themselves to any time—before next December and within the time of one month for one pack, and also before the month of April for another lac of goods, so we live in the firm confidence that however much, to our inward sorrow, the said brokers, on account of the general troubles and the calamities and stagnations in trade caused thereby, and very particularly the blockade and encirclement of this city, which has made all export impossible for a long time, have also been unable to fulfill their aforesaid obligations with respect to the stipulated time for the collection, and to which we have not been able to oblige them by any means, this advantageous sale will gain the precious satisfaction of Your High Nobilities, and it is on the foundation of this that we take the liberty to request His Highness most urgently that the demand for that and all other articles may be favorably granted, and that this trading post, if possible, as before, may again be provided with more sugar, both because we flatter ourselves that the same will maintain a good price, and because it also contributes not a little to the sale of spices, which we may determine will also increase considerably as soon as an agreement is reached between the different Maratha parties and the English, whom it is said, on account of a lack of money, people and funds, yearn for it greatly and are even on the verge of concluding the same with a considerable part of that nation, since the Deccan, where at present all supplies are consumed, will in such a case take no small quantity. However, while the brokers on the aforementioned 28th of January came to offer no more for the camphor than what was previously offered by them, or 50:—:—, and subsequently 105 rupees for the vermilion, while professing that they could add nothing more to it, we left both of these articles on that day unsold, in the hope of an increase in prices. But since an opportunity presented itself to us to dispose of the camphor to the French merchant De La Rochette, as he had offered 54 rupees net per 100 lb for it, we then proceeded thereto with common advice on the 4th of February, as appears from what was noted in the resolution of the 18th thereafter, as being the most advantageous price that can currently be negotiated, and which still yields a net profit of 704 percent net, and we hope that this will also serve to the satisfaction of Your High Nobilities, while we must leave the vermilion lying unsold in order to try whether in time one will not be able to negotiate a higher price, and the quicksilver has already been sent back to the main settlement with the ship De Vrouwe Geertruijda, as appears from what was dealt with in our collective letter of the 2nd of January. Furthermore, pursuant to the resolution of the 20th of September, we have sold to the Parsi inhabitant of this town, Franji Beramji, such a quantity of 10,000 cans of arrack api as was on hand from the supply of 177¾ more than required, at 115 per leaguer in ready money and without any deduction, or with a net profit of 34 1/8 percent, it having been impossible to negotiate a higher price for it.
