6 Respectful reply to the adjoining requisition for the year 1777, dated 10 October 1775, received at Batavia on [illegible] 1776, and here on 6 December following. Honorable, highly esteemed Gentlemen! The Director having finally succeeded, after much effort, now that the troubles on this side of the Indies are quieting down somewhat, in persuading the textile suppliers to a reduction of prices, the contracting both for the fatherland and the Indies took effect in our meeting of 25 April of this year, with a price reduction of 10 percent, or indeed for the prices that were paid at the time of Mr. Senff and lastly in the year 1774. We hope that this will be as much to the satisfaction of your Honors as the fact that we are now dispatching the entire requisition with the ship Stavenisse to Ceylon, to be transferred from there to your Honors, all in good and sound assortments. It has still been impossible for us to obtain the Carmenia wool, whatever efforts have been made to that end. We do not doubt that the corroots will be found satisfactory by your Honors, and the patterns of the chintzes Chiaboutria are the same, while the cotton yarn is of no lesser quality than that sent previously. We refer to the requisition of returns adopted for the year 1776, and sent to you last year, etc. Since then we have, etc. Surat indigo to excuse Catechu, see Surat Requisition for Surat From the answered requisition of the Ministers of Surat, written 31 December 1774, we saw that, notwithstanding the public hostilities between the English and the Marathas, our requisition of the year 1772 was satisfied except for one pack of textiles or 100 pieces of Chasen Arned Abat, and we shall await learning what success the efforts of the Ministers will have had regarding the 1000 pounds of Carmenia wool demanded in the year 1771 for a trial. Regarding the qualities of the cloths that we received with this return from Surat via Ceylon at the Chamber of Amsterdam, except for the corroots, which are very coarse, we are satisfied, and particularly with the patterns of the chintzes in general. Many years ago we also sent the patterns of the chintzes Chiaboutria to the Ministers, the fulfillment of which as we desired at that time has only now followed; wherefore we seriously recommend to the Ministers for the future Extract from the requisition of returns from the Indies, adopted 10 October 1775 recommend putting our remarks on the particular articles into effect more expeditiously. The cotton yarn has been of good quality, having yielded good profits to the Company both in the past year and in this year. With the ships Zuidbeveland and 't Veldhoen, the gum myrrh was brought in chests of 500 pounds, which were generally all found broken apart; it would be better if the chests of that gum were made no heavier than 300 pounds, as was done this year with those of the catechu, and found very good. You will see that we have reduced our demand for this gum, as the past year yielded a loss. Here below we subjoin our requisition of Surat merchandise, referring with respect to the cloths to what we reported to you in the past year and in previous requisitions, namely, that all attention must be paid to the qualities of the cloths during purchases, so that we may at least continue with our requisition on the present footing. Catechu.
