207 of the Honorable Company at the Office of Souratta as found in comparison with the financial year 1779/1780 and the estimate made in the year 1755, upon the closing of the trade books of the year 1785 as of ultimo August 1785; to wit: I. General demonstration and comparison of the profits and expenses of this financial year against 1779/1780, namely: The true profits of this financial year amount to ƒ 226,573:4:8. In the year 1779/1780 they amounted to ƒ 386,915:2:—. Thus now less ƒ 160,347:17:8. The expenses amount to (including the amounts of the account of the deceased Junior Merchant Heijdeman, which was transferred from salary into the trade books with ƒ 1,070:18:8) during the course of the books, or 10½ months in this financial year, ƒ 46,345:13:8. In the year 1779/1780 they amounted to ƒ 64,706:9:—, which, as under Article III, partly for a full year and partly for 10½ months, comes to ƒ 59,472:11:—. Thus in this financial year less ƒ 13,126:17:8. Subtracting the lesser incurred expenses from the lesser obtained profits, it appears that this office in this trading period advanced less than in the year 1779/1780 by ƒ 147,215:—:—. And taken on its own, or if one subtracts the incurred ordinary true expenses of ƒ 46,345:13:8 from the true obtained profits of this year of ƒ 226,573:4:8, it appears that this office in this trading period advanced ƒ 180,227:11:—. Short demonstration of the true state. II. General comparison of profits and expenses against the established estimate, with added reasons from which the differences originate; to wit: For profits, by memorandum of management dated 4 May 1755, was set ƒ 867,000:—, which reduced by 1/5, or in Dutch money, amounts to ƒ 693,600:—:—. And the same amount to ƒ 226,573:4:8. Thus less ƒ 467,026:15:8. Since the said memorandum was drafted and ordered to be observed, it has never been possible to meet it, considering that it was formed in accordance with the most flourishing trading period, to which is added that in this financial year one had only one ship's cargo and no more than 30,000 lb of spices. The expenses are determined by memorandum of management and general regulation on the provisions for the servants at about ƒ 119,500:—, which currently according to the current value is ƒ 95,600:—, which for 10½ months comes to ƒ 83,650:—:—. During this trading period, or in ten and a half months, they amount to ƒ 46,345:13:8. Thus less ƒ 37,304:6:8. Through constant attention to everything that can serve toward economy in the household, as well as through a lesser apparatus of [illegible] and vessels, they are thus far below the estimate. III. Less ƒ 1647:—:—. The reasons for the increases and decreases consist of the following; to wit: Ordinary Rations Less ƒ 2929:11:8. Due to a smaller number of higher, lower, and lesser qualified persons, clerks, military, and seafaring personnel, etc., that much less was paid for board and emolument monies and issued as rations from the Honourable Company's provision warehouse. Ordinary Expenses For firewood, oil, and wax candles, less was supplied and paid due to a smaller number of servants. The maintenance of the weapons in use in the garrison cost less, and this reduction was principally caused by the factory Brootchia not yet being re-established. Extraordinary Expenses . . . . Less ƒ 2461:14:—. The making and erecting of a new flagstaff, and the damage caused to the Honourable Company's shipyard by a dangerous fire that broke out on the date 22 April 1780, item the paid rewards for extinguishing the fire, caused this account to rise that much higher in the financial year 1779/80 than in this financial year. Carpentry and Repairs . . . . . More ƒ 770:5:8. Because during the past three years that the Honourable Company's shipyard, etc., was in English power, various things fell more or less into disrepair, and were damaged by the storm that raged on the date 21 April 1781 (worse than in human memory), item most roofs were stripped of a great part of their roof tiles and ridge tiles, one was obliged this year to expend that much more to the charge of this account. The Hospital Less ƒ 5920:17:—. Because in this financial year more came in favour of this account to the charge of shore and ship wages on account of consumed and charged half-pay of defrayed Company servants than in the year 1779/80, the same is now that much less. Expenses of Ships - - - - - - Less ƒ 2128:5:8. In the financial year 1779/80 the two ships Europa and Honkoop called here, which were both dispatched again in one and a half months; on the other hand, in this financial year one had only the ship Trompenburg, though for about three months here in the roads, and by frugal management reduced its expenses by that much. Expenses of Shallops and Smaller Vessels - - - - Less ƒ 416:6:8. To the charge of this account was disbursed in the year 1779/80, for wages and board of native sailors serving on the narrow-hulled vessels D' Jonge Petrus and Dordrecht, item to the natives serving the shore-boat and shipyard, as well as for repairing and maintaining the said three vessels, both in cash and from stock: ƒ 8120:2:—. And in this financial year, in 10½ months, was paid in cash solely for wages and board for Gentile seafaring personnel in the service of the shipyard: ƒ 1184:5:—; consequently, this is now that much less. Monthly Monies of Native Servants - - - - More ƒ 2081:18:8. In the year 1779/80, the wage paid to a native bookbinder was charged to ordinary expenses, that of a native carpenter and smith to the debit of carpentry and repairs, and in this financial year was charged to this account at ƒ 280:16:—; but principally because, in accordance with the Council of Policy's resolution of 5 August 1785, ƒ 2035:2:8 for native military personnel was transferred to this, this account is less ƒ 28:14:—. Account of Condemnations and Confiscations - - - - More ƒ 51:—:— To the charge of this has been placed no more than the ordinary wages to 4 native officers of justice, and only ƒ 12:13:— on account of repairs to the prisons and the purchase of padlocks; but in the year 1779/80 this account was credited with ƒ 87:12:— through the interception of spices and coffee beans, so that this has now fallen more into deficit. Shore Wages - - - - Less ƒ 1044:18:8. Due to the small number of Europeans presently here, no more than ƒ 666:8:— was paid out of the treasury in this financial year, making ƒ 911:2:— with the calculation according to regulation and the debits for hospital expenses. Thus, this would have shown as much as ƒ 2115:17:— less than in the year 1779/80, had not the account of Christiaen Heijdeman, deceased junior merchant and chosen Resident of Brootchia, been transferred from the wage books to the trade books for ƒ 1070:18:8 in accordance with the resolution of 30 September 1785. Ship Wages In the financial year 1779/80 was paid out of the treasury to the crew members of the ships Europa and Honkoop for earned months, etc., and calculated according to the regulations thereupon, item debited to the same for consumed half-wages of persons defrayed in the hospital: ƒ 2463:13:—. And in this year, in the same manner regarding the crew members of the ship Trompenburg: ƒ 1619:17:8. Thus, this would have amounted to ƒ 843:15:8 less than in the year 1779/80, had the officers of the said vessel not been charged on their wage accounts for ƒ 427:9:— according to the resolution of 31 December 1784 on account of a deficit on the cargo brought from Batavia.
