the signed governor, someone be appointed to proceed thither and take into the Company's service as many of the same, at the wages earned in the Land's service, as shall be inclined thereto. Since here, through the present fortunate circumstances of external peace and internal tranquility, we find ourselves sufficiently capable of redress and halting of occurrences that require a strong arm, such as rarely happen in this Colony, and thus, regarding the offer contained in the fifth Point, we express our obligation, we nevertheless acknowledge and shall also always gladly respond to this offer of Your Right Honourable as a special proof of your readiness for the protection and safeguarding of this Colony. And whereas, in partial response to the fourth and seventh points, order has already been given by the undersigned governor to provide from time to time, according to the statement to be made by Your Right Honourable for the account of the Admiralty, everything that can be furnished for the usual rations for the people, but the table money for the Land's ships here has never been paid except on their homeward voyage, we have thought fit and resolved to cause to be disbursed to Your Right Honourable, for the account as above, as many moneys from the Company's Treasury as Your Right Honourable shall come to require for assistance, both for your own consumption and housing as well as for that of the officers, and to cause the petty officers, soldiers, and common sailors who shall continue in the Land's service to obtain their maintenance, since on the part of the Company there is no opportunity at hand to provide Your Right Honourable and Officers with suitable housing, and suitable shelter can be prepared here only for the petty officers and the common men. Whereas Your Right Honourables have thought fit, in reply to my Memorial presented to the Governor of this Colony on the 5th of August last, to disburse to me and the remaining officers of the unfortunate ship Holland as many moneys from the Company's Treasury as I, together with my Officers, would require for our own consumption and Housing. And the undersigned has been here since the beginning of the month of October last with three Lieutenants, one Clerk, and two Midshipmen, and not knowing how long he will still have to wait for an occasion to return to the Fatherland, he therefore requests of Your Right Honourables for the present a sum of One Thousand Carolus Guilders Holland to employ for the above-mentioned lodgings and board. And should the undersigned, together with his Officers, be under the necessity of having to remain here longer than the requested moneys extend, whether Your Right Honourables would then have the goodness to enable me, the undersigned, to receive such moneys as shall be necessary for this purpose. The undersigned Captain of the private ship Den Onzekeren, chartered by the Noble Company, shows with much respect: That he, the petitioner, having set sail with the aforementioned Vessel on the 11th of June of this year from Middelburg, made every possible effort and endeavor to make the required speed with that ship during favorable winds in order to reach this corner of the earth at a suitable time, but that, although the same ship otherwise has the reputation of being a good sailer, all attempts were so far in vain that he, the petitioner, solely because of her sluggish progress, did not arrive in the roadstead here until the 8th of this month, and thus only after the expiration of about 5 months, and that having completed this voyage free of disaster must be attributed solely to a miraculous preservation of Providence. No. 6 That he, the petitioner, having to attribute this present complete sluggishness of the said ship fully and solely to the condition of her cargo, which consists of an overly heavy bottom cargo, could neither justify to his own conscience nor to the shipowners, being his principals, if he did not employ all efforts and proper means to obtain the utmost necessary redress in this matter. That this redress can only be brought about by lightening the vessel of a sufficient amount of her superfluous cargo, for which the weight of the planks unloaded here is by no means sufficient; he, the petitioner, therefore finds himself compelled to request your Right Honorable, Valiant, and Worshipful Sirs, as he does by these presents, that one or another portion of the bottom cargo of the aforesaid vessel may be further discharged from it, and he, the petitioner, may thus be enabled to continue his further voyage to Batavia in peace of mind, as he, the petitioner, must in all conscience testify that the voyage cannot otherwise be undertaken by him except with the prospect of great danger and the legitimate fear arising therefrom.
