On which vessel Avenhorn the smallpox having prevailed in the beginning of the voyage hither, and of which a cadet who, along with four slaves present on that ship, suffered from the aforementioned disease, died, we have therefore, with God's assistance, in order to prevent the contagion of this so dangerous disease for [illegible] this our land, just and in the same manner as took place in the previous year with the return ship d' Eenparigheid, immediately employed all precautions to prevent communication with the aforementioned vessel Avenhorn, and for that purpose also, as soon as one was informed of this, caused a military guard to be posted on one of the country's boats, with the strictest order to allow no vessels to approach or depart in the meantime, the said ship Avenhorn having provisionally been dispatched to Robben Island for even greater security, dispatched, in order to remain there for the present for a few more days and to be provided there with the necessary refreshments by means of the country's boats, until further measures and precautions shall have been taken to cause that vessel to be unloaded and reloaded with peace of mind: Just as likewise on the 23rd of this month the Ceylon return ship Doggersbank arrived safely here with 2 dead and 7 sick, having departed on the 15th of November last from Punto Gale: without one having received with that vessel, neither by writ of the ministers in Ceylon nor through private reports, any further confirmation regarding the latest news of the hurricanes that were said to have raged on that island and the rumored damage and destruction caused thereby in Jaffanapatnam, and of which mention was made in our repeatedly mentioned last humble letter of the 5th of January, so that one can determine from this that those tidings were based on false rumors. They have recently received a a missive from the Viscount de Souillac and Motais de Narbonne, Governor and Intendant at Isle de France, dated the 17th of October of last year, whereby request is made, since by the excessive drought that had prevailed this year on the Island of Bourbon, the harvest of corn there was entirely ruined and one thus saw oneself brought into the same circumstance which was experienced here locally in the preceding year 1786 due to the crop failure, that therefore Mr. Troublet, who after departure of

from Mr. Commissioner Percheron, who conducts the affairs of the French nation here, found himself instructed to request from this government the required relief of 600,000 lb. of grain, or else to lend him a helping hand in the efforts that would be made by the aforementioned Mr. Troubles to provide himself with that requested quantity from the private residents here. Having deliberated on the contents of the aforementioned dispatch in our meeting of the 11th of December last, it was taken into consideration that, while on the one hand, the relief enjoyed in the year 1786 from the aforementioned French government during the extreme shortage of bread that then prevailed here did not permit withholding from that same government in similar circumstances—which they now also expected there—such assistance as could be brought to it from here; yet on the other hand, through the uncertainty as to how far the Account of what, at the closing of the expense account, of the provisions to the castaways of the national warship Holland dated 24 April last, [illegible] which at the general [illegible] 1788 [illegible] new harvest on hand at the time would serve to fill the required stock in the Company's warehouses, to provide for the Indies, and to feed the residents, without most imprudently exposing oneself to inconvenience or a new shortage, it was in no way possible to calculate whether the entire quantity requested in the aforementioned dispatch could be spared; while however, as the aforementioned Mr. Troubles insisted upon orally, a determination in that regard necessarily had to be made so that the aforementioned government would not employ a ship or ships to come hither in vain for that purpose, which they might otherwise dispatch elsewhere to that end. Wherefore we have informed the aforementioned government in reply, and as far as necessary regarding the aforementioned circumstances, that one had not been able to fix the firm promise with respect to the desired quantity of wheat any closer than to Account of what, at the closing of the expense account, of the provisions to the castaways of the national warship Holland dated 24 April last, [illegible] which at the general [illegible] 1788 [illegible] about half thereof, or 1,500 mudden, which will then also be delivered from the Company's warehouses here to the ship or vessel that shall be designated for that purpose; and that furthermore, upon obtaining a sufficient supply for this purpose, one will moreover also attempt to supply the remainder from the Company's warehouses, or else facilitate a purchase from private individuals by which the entire quantity may be supplied. Hoping therefore that we may have acted in this regard according to the esteemed intention of Your Honorable Right Worships, we further take the liberty of transmitting to the same herewith an authentic copy of the aforementioned dispatch from the French ministers. In our previous humble letter of 23 August of the past year, we brought, among other things, to the knowledge of Your Honorable Right Worships the outcome of the legal proceedings held against Account of what, at the closing of the expense account, of the provisions to the castaways of the national warship Holland dated 24 April last, [illegible] which at the general [illegible] 1788 [illegible] ƒ four soldiers stationed at this Castle, who had made themselves suspected of the theft of the missing money chest from the ship De Arend. Afterwards, through a written remonstrance which we have the honor to present herewith to Your Honorable Right Worships, it was brought to our knowledge by the undersigned Senior Merchant and Cellar Master, Mr. Jacobus Johannes Lesueur, who performed the office of Fiscal in this affair, that on the occasion of the demolition of a wall in the envelope of this Castle, some Mexican dollars were found during digging by the slaves working there, of which they had possessed themselves; but this being immediately investigated, a number of two hundred and seventy pieces of this coin was then secured; whereupon the aforementioned found 270 Mexican dollars—as presumably belonging to those which, with the above-mentioned Account of what, at the closing of the expense account, of the provisions to the castaways of the national warship Holland dated 24 April last, [illegible] which at the general [illegible] 1788 [illegible] money chest from the ship De Arend, were stolen from the Honorable Company out of the money treasury and must have been hidden here and there in various places—were transferred to the Company's treasury here; while at the same time, because of the possibility that, in the very same manner as was discovered regarding the aforementioned Mexican dollars, more other coins that were stolen with the chest from the money treasury could be found here or there along or around the fortifications

could give rise to certain perceptions among the public that must offend the character of an honest man, and thus could cause unpleasant reproaches and encounters in the Corps in which they might subsequently be placed, this consideration had caused a scruple in them regarding the step they had to choose, whether to ask for their said discharge or rather to request a court-martial. That he, the Governor, had made no difficulty in declaring to the said two Captains that, whereas it had pleased Your Right Honourable Worships, for the intended end and purpose set by the same, to order them, the Captains, to request their discharge from the Regiment, yet in the reasons that had given rise thereto, no contradiction was found by the same to employ them, the Captains, again in the service of the Honourable Company with the garrison here, but on the contrary the same had granted qualification for that purpose, such a conception by the Lords Masters themselves must also notoriously clear away all notions that, conflicting therewith, might be concocted by others; adding that His Honour would therefore also feel obliged to grant them his protection against this at all times. That whereas, notwithstanding this declaration made by him, the Governor, to the said two Captains, the said difficulty had nevertheless remained residing with them, His Honour had given them the freedom to address themselves further to us in that regard. Whereupon the aforesaid two Captains Sandol Roy and de Bonstetten, having addressed themselves to us by letter, and having set forth therein how the consideration that most people are accustomed to judge only by the outward appearance of events had raised the fear in them that the public might judge their conduct erroneously, as it mattered to a man of honour not to leave any offensive feelings against him in anyone: that therefore, although they were otherwise fully decided to request their discharge from the aforesaid Regiment in conformity with the orders of the Lords Masters, since the same had nevertheless left them the choice to request a court-martial, they, on account of the delicacy that this difficulty brought with it, entrusted to the undersigned Governor and to us the judgment whether requesting a court-martial was necessary for them or not. And this point having been taken into consideration, we have judged thereon that, whereas the undersigned Governor and the Colonel and Chief of the militia in particular, as well as all of us in general, bear witness that the aforesaid two Captains Sandol Roy and de Bonstetten have not only behaved in their garrison duty in every way obediently and to our good satisfaction, and that there is also nothing to be said against their other civil conduct, such a testimony ought to provide the aforesaid Captains with sufficient security against the erroneous and detrimental notions which ill-intentioned persons might wish or be able to make and inspire concerning them; the more so since, no difficulty having been found by Your Right Honourable Worships themselves to declare them, the Captains, after having obtained their discharge from the said Regiment, employable again with the garrison here, no one would also be able to forge any notions that could oppose or hinder the good success of this intention of Your Right Honourable Worships. Your Right Honorable, furthermore, having also willed in your esteemed missive of 21 June of the preceding year, among other things, that, in order to bring the aforementioned Regiment van Meuron onto the footing upon which it ought to be according to the 3rd article of the Capitulation, and to gradually purge it of foreign officers, henceforth no other officers than Swiss, Dutchmen, and Germans shall be promoted to higher ranks in that Regiment than those at which they presently stand, and this order having been communicated to the Chief of that Regiment, four of the said officers, named de Querenet, le Chevalier de Roger, Bisardon, and Valmenie, have submitted their grievances regarding this in writing. Whereupon, no other decision having been able to be taken by us than to transmit to Your Right Honorable the said petition of those four officers as it stands, we therefore take the liberty of sending it along likewise enclosed herewith in authentic copy. Having also arrived here at this place with the return ship de Paarl, a Cadet and seven unfit soldiers of the Luxemburg Regiment, who were placed on the said ship de Paarl at Ceylon in order to sail over to the Netherlands with it, and a written request concerning the said persons having been made by Captain Lieutenant Jean André de Maurras, who is present here and oversees the arriving recruits of that Regiment, that since the aforementioned Cadet and seven servicemen had likewise had to endure all the disasters and perils with the said ship de Paarl, over and above the throwing overboard and loss of all their goods, so that they even found themselves destitute of the most necessary covering, and that therefore a favorable regard might be cast by us upon their aforesaid unfortunate circumstances: we, taking into consideration the prolonged voyage of the aforementioned eight persons and their just-cited circumstances, as well as the services which they had to perform on board in the utmost distress of the aforementioned ship, could not avoid granting to each of the said persons three months' pay, and causing it to be disbursed from the Company's Treasury; which we hope, for the alleged reasons, may be most favorably approved by Your Right Honorable, the written representation submitted to us by the aforementioned Captain Maurras regarding this being enclosed herewith in copy. A request having been made to us in writing—likewise attached hereto in authentic copy—by the Lieutenant Colonel in the aforementioned Swiss Regiment de Meuron, the Chevalier de Meuron Bullot, to be permitted to enjoy the payment of his monthly wages and further emoluments as Lieutenant Colonel since the day of his appointment to the said capacity, being 7 November 1785, when according to his statement the commission as Lieutenant Colonel was dispatched to him; but it having been taken into consideration thereon that the increased pay of Servants advanced in the Fatherland, whether of the Police, military, or Navy, according to an invariable order and custom, is always reckoned to commence from the day that the notices of their advancement or increase in monthly wages are received here, unless it were specially ordered otherwise therein; we therefore, owing to the absence of such a special notification departing from that customary order concerning the monthly wages due to the aforementioned Lieutenant Colonel de Meuron Bullot, could also proceed in no other way than upon the usual determined footing, and thus could not undertake to grant the request of the said Lieutenant Colonel, but must submit this to Your Right Honorable, transmitting an authentic copy of the aforementioned petition in order to be able or permitted to obtain the said increase from the time expressed therein. Honorable with that Regiment, and had acted with all zeal for the common cause, to which we have in general had to conform, and have thus accordingly dispatched a Certificate in proper form to the aforementioned Lieutenant Colonel de Meuron. On the 20th of this month of January, having arrived here in the Roads the private Dutch ship Susanna, chartered by the presiding Chamber and dispatched by Your Right Honorable Worships, with 1 deceased and 6 disabled persons, having lain from the 12th to the 16th of November at St Iago, and with which having been brought the remaining men of the first battalion of Wurtemberg, we have, after their disembarkation, immediately caused all necessary preparations to be made in order likewise to ready this vessel as soon as possible to transport thither the remaining troops of the Regiment de Meuron, the greatest part of which consisting of 800 to 900 men are to be dispatched from here to Ceilon in the beginning of the upcoming month of February with the previously arrived ships Josephus de Tweede, the Vrouwe Johanna, the Drie Gebroeders and the Fortuin. The undersigned, fellow member of your Respected assembly, having functioned as Fiscal in the matter of the missing chest of Mexicans pursuant to your honored resolution of the [illegible], has the honor respectfully to bring to the notice of your Honorable Valiance and Honorable Respected Sirs, that a few days ago report was made to him by Lieutenant Engineer Schulde, who has particular supervision over the hired slaves employed on the fortification works, that on that afternoon, on the occasion of demolishing a wall in the envelopes of this castle, the working slaves, during digging, had discovered some Mexicans buried there, which they had immediately seized. However, upon these being examined at once, a number of two hundred and seventy pieces of that coin were secured, which sum, with the prior knowledge of the President of the Court of Justice, was surrendered to the Secretary of the said Council for sequestration. Since now, according to the judgment of Account of that which upon the closing of the expense accounts of the provisions to the castaways of the National warship Holland under date of 24 April last, was erroneously omitted, which at the general transfer in 1788 [illegible] the undersigned, not the slightest doubt remains that these Mexicans found so casually belonged to the aforesaid chest stolen from the treasury and were certainly hidden by the perpetrators of that theft, partly here and in various places, he deems it necessary to take the liberty of proposing to your Honorable Valiance and Honorable Respected Sirs to have the said Mexicans, as certainly belonging to the Honorable Company, received into the Honorable Company's treasury upon the ordinary warrant of the Honorable, Valiant Sir Governor, with the request at the same time that order may be given that no excavations along and around the works, where not improbably more of that stolen coin could lie hidden, shall take place, except under the continual supervision of the non-commissioned officers appointed as overseers of the slaves used in the fortification works. Governor, Sir, The decision of the Directors concerning us fulfills our wishes in some measure, since it orders us to leave the regiment; but on the other hand, it casts a shadow upon our conduct that our honor compels us to clear away. The Directors have judged us upon a simple letter devoid of the principal facts that supported our complaints. It is possible that we have sinned against form, but we cannot be persuaded that captains should be condemned who must watch over the interests of the soldiers entrusted to them; because these same captains, after having made a thousand representations to their chief without being heard, finally address themselves to those from whom they ought to expect justice. We are accused of having shown a lack of respect toward the chief of the regiment; perhaps a few overly strong expressions escaped us; but always complaining, always rebuffed, constantly making representations and never heard, it is not surprising that a little bitterness became mixed with our complaints. The Directors order us to request our discharge from the regiment, so that order and harmony may be restored therein. In what light has our conduct been examined? What—we ask Account of that which, upon the closing of the expense accounts of the provisions to the shipwrecked men of the warship of the Country Holland, under date of 24 April recently [illegible] to wit [illegible] transferred: 1788. which [illegible] the general [illegible] that the soldier receive what is due to him, that justice be rendered as it ought to be; and it is we who are regarded as capable of disturbing order and hindering harmony. While ready to defer to the order of the Sovereign, we nonetheless owe something to our own vindication, and for that purpose we shall cite only the principal and most well-known facts; they will sufficiently prove that if we demanded that justice be rendered, we unfortunately had good reason to demand it. To render justice to the soldier, the officers must be perfectly convinced that he receives everything due to him and that no wrong is done to him. Mr. Meuron withheld nearly a year of settlement pay from the soldiers in Europe; he caused endless repairs to be paid for here, and that for weapons that constantly required mending. Mr. Meuron indeed said that he made them pay for these repairs to oblige the soldiers to take better care of their musket, that he was holding this money in the meantime, but that at the time of their discharge he would have it returned to each of them; those who have departed, have they received it? No. He took from the sick in the hospitals; he withholds a fifth of the wages of the soldiers and non-commissioned officers under the strange designation of exchange, which the Capitulation forbids, and says that the deputies in France granted it to him by word of mouth. Who is more credible, Mr. Meuron or the Capitulation? And with such a contradiction, how can the officer judge with a quiet conscience? Mr. Meuron, on his private authority, subjected five soldiers to the torture of the match cords; he sent them to Batavia, with the exception of one named Pakman; this man was demanded back by the Regency; Mr. Meuron says that he was sent to Batavia, while he is with the regiment; the man named Challes, who was among their number, died as a consequence of the torture he had suffered; and in one of the letters that the said Mr. Meuron wrote to the Regency, he reports that these five men were sent to Batavia. May we now be permitted to ask whether these deceptions are compatible with justice? In a court-martial, one soldier is condemned to be hanged for the fabrication of counterfeit paper money, the others to be whipped, branded, and sent to the Company's chain gang, and only one to prison pending further investigation; the Superior Council approves the sentence, it is executed, with the exception of the man named Boissac, condemned pending further investigation, whom Mr. Meuron releases on his own authority, without the court-martial being able to investigate further, as its judgment dictates. Are we wrong to ask that justice be rendered as it ought to be? These facts are known to your Excellency as well as to the Council of the Regency; they are established by the proceedings and leave no doubt as to the uprightness of our claims. The affair of the soldier Robert, which led to great difficulties in the court-martial, must be no less known to you; you know, and everyone knows, that this man complaining of having paid twice for his musket, the majority of the votes was in his favor and did not wish him to be condemned. condemned according to the rigor of the ordinances, fourteen or fifteen officers were dismissed from the court-martial and placed under arrest by order of Mr. Meuron. Can one constrain opinions and force men to render a judgment that is repugnant to their conscience? Is that rendering justice? In the eyes of the entire Colony, refusing to some any kind of pleasures, permissions, leaves of absence for the countryside, and granting it incessantly to others without being able to provide a single valid reason for these deprivations, and I dare say, for these humiliations. Is that being just? Are we wrong to complain? We speak to Your Excellency only of the most striking things, not as a new recrimination, but because the judgment of the Directors seems to accuse us, and it is necessary to leave upon us no appearance of blame. We even dare to ask for your support and that of the members of the government, both regarding our military conduct and our civil conduct. The greatest part of men judging only by events, we are in fear of being misjudged by the public; and it matters to a man of honor whose intentions are pure that no one can hold against him any offensive feeling. Struck by this fear, it is to Your Excellency and to the noble Council of the Government that we submit our affair. We are perfectly resolved to follow and to respect the orders of the Directors; but as they still leave us the choice of a court-martial, if you believe that it is necessary to our sense of honor, we are ready to accept it. Half of the Regiment is composed of French soldiers; this order against the Officers of their nation gradually extends the distaste to them, and can there be cohesion in a Corps where one half enjoys all the advantages of its status, while the other is absolutely deprived of them? Transmitted 1788. The Right Honorable, Valiant Lord Cornelis Jacob van de Graaf, Governor of Cabo de Goede Hoop and the dependencies thereof, etc. etc., having been pleased expressly to commission us, the undersigned, in conformity with the resolution adopted in this regard by the Council of Policy on 7 August of this year 1787, in the presence of the skipper Joachim Hendrik Milfaart, commanding the Dutch chartered ship de Mentor, to taste such eight leaguers of Cape wine, marked from 1 to 8, as have been shipped today in that vessel for the Fatherland; and we have found those wines good of taste, and the leaguers in good condition. The aforesaid cooperage was branded with the Company's chop, and from each leaguer, in the presence as aforementioned, a bottle was drawn, which, sealed with the Company's mark and numbered like the leaguers, was delivered to the said commander to serve as a sample. Trusting to have duly complied herewith, we submit this as our humble report. Below stood: In the Castle of Good Hope, the 25th of January 1788. Was signed: W. F. van Reede van Oudshoorn and E. C. The said Surgeon de Maraval having now requested of us that, together with his wife and child, for whom the passage and board money has already been paid into the Company's treasury in Ceylon, he might depart for the Netherlands with the bearer of this, the chartered ship de Vlissinger, currently lying ready to sail and returning for the Presidial Chamber; and this having been granted to him, we have felt obliged to give your Right Honorable High Respects dutiful notice thereof by these presents. Thus it is again very probable that they have been equipped for this catch by the English nation, without, however, any of them having yet come ashore. By our humble letter of 2 November of the past year, dispatched per the Dutch private ship den Onzeekeren, we brought among other matters to the knowledge of Your Right Honorable Nobles the request made to us by the burgher and wine merchant here, Jacobus Johannes van den Bergh, on the occasion of the presence of the chartered private ship de goede Verwagting, to be permitted to ship certain wines on freight from here to the Fatherland with that vessel for his own account; but that the said van den Bergh, not having been inclined to conform to such conditions as were prescribed to him by us, and under which his aforementioned request could have been granted to him subject to the esteemed further approval of Your Right Honorable Nobles, this project had consequently remained without any effect. [illegible] Another and further petition presented by the same to us. What has nevertheless been understood from its contents, although obscure and unintelligible. By our humble letter of the 5th of January last to Your Right Honorable and Worshipful, having respectfully submitted our dutiful observance and execution of your most venerated orders concerning the dismissal of such members from our assembly and from the Council of Justice who were not of the Reformed Religion, we take the liberty regarding this to inform Your Right Honorable and Worshipful further most humbly: that at our assembly of the 14th of July of the preceding year, when we put into execution the aforementioned highly respected orders regarding the aforesaid members, a petition was submitted, signed by seventy-five citizens and inhabitants, all being members of the Lutheran church congregation here, containing a request that the execution whereby they requested a postponement of the execution of Your Right Honorable and Worshipful's order regarding the dismissal of the members of the denomination from the Political and Judicial council, in which, however, it was not possible to concur. of the aforementioned order of Your Right Honorable and Worshipful might remain suspended until you should have disposed upon a most humble petition which they would take the liberty to present to Your Right Honorable and Worshipful, and which supplication they hoped would be supported with our favorable recommendation, as appears more fully from the respectful copy of that petition annexed hereto; we, thereupon, because that request They were nevertheless left at liberty to address Your Right Honorable and Worshipful. was contrary to the positive order of Your Right Honorable and Worshipful, judged that we could not concur therein, leaving nevertheless at that time the petitioners at liberty to address us further with such a request as they intended to propose to Your Right Honorable and Worshipful, in order to accompany the same with the considerations that, after reading that petition, might be found useful and expedient to the matter. Since then, a petition having been delivered to us by the Lutheran church council, A petition in this regard from the Lutheran church council is forwarded herewith. A copy thereof having been requested by the Reformed church council. containing a presentation of the hardship and the grievance which was contained for that denomination in the orders of Your Right Honorable and Worshipful, and a humble request that the same orders might be altered and softened, we take the liberty to annex the same hereto and very humbly to refer to its contents. Meanwhile, a petition has also been presented to us by the church council of the Reformed congregation here, whereby they make known that they have been reliably informed that in the first drafted petition of the so-called Grand Lutheran church council, several expressions very insulting and defamatory to them appeared, and that since they were unaware to what extent and in what manner these offending expressions had been mitigated or omitted in the recently submitted petition, of which they, for the reassurance of their good name, would gladly wish to obtain further knowledge, For which we, however, did not find ourselves qualified. they therefore requested to be allowed to obtain a copy thereof. knees in the hold being rotted, the bolts mostly all being found so loose that one can drive them in and out with an ordinary nail hammer; that these said defects were declared unanimously by the aforesaid Committee to be of such gravity that the ship has been found here to be irreparable, and totally incapable of any conveyance from this roadstead; that even according to the opinion of the shipwrights who assisted this Committee, the ship would not be deemed worthy in Holland itself of expending upon it that expense and the trouble required for it; that likewise, even if their delegates had not discovered enough defects which could cause them with complete peace of mind to declare that vessel irreparable, since, with the ship now lying still, several parts close up, and it had been thought fit that said ship, after some repairs, continue the voyage from here, the Captain assigned thereto down to the lowest crew members would nevertheless oppose the departure from here with that ship, as they all, thanking God's goodness, testified to have arrived here miraculously, and such dreadful circumstances as that ship, if it went to sea again beyond repair, above all through its working apart, would surely present to their eyes, just as they had been forced to witness enough on the voyage hither, they would not wish to endure again. And it being clearly established from this that besides the defects which they discovered during the examination to the aforesaid delegates, and which they have already found to be irreparable, others of no less importance, through the re-closing of the parts that had worked apart while the ship is now lying still, could still have remained hidden from them, which, however, having to reveal their effect upon working at sea, could have caused the officers along with all the rest of the crew such a scruple that, after whatever repair one might apply to it, they would not be inclined to venture back to sea with that vessel. We have therefore for those reasons had to resolve to have the more-mentioned vessel, the Paarl, demolished, and subsequently to employ the still usable woodwork for some necessities both on the batteries and otherwise in the service of the Honorable Company, as well as to have the unusable wood serve where such may best be useful on the Company's behalf. However, since from the report previously likewise submitted by the delegates who served to have the cargo of the aforesaid ship the Paarl transferred into the ship the Vreede mentioned herebefore, and of which report an authentic copy is annexed hereto, it has appeared that among the bales of linens of that transshipped cargo there is still a number of 357, which, as specified herebefore, were found unmarked but dry and undamaged from the outside, necessarily containing the linens that the ship's officers, according to their sworn statement given at Isle de France, had washed and dried, without any further accounting or accountability being able to be demanded from the same officers concerning this otherwise than upon the opening of those packages; wherefore it has also been judged necessary that one of them be present at the unloading of the more-mentioned cargo from the ship the Vreede in the fatherland, in order to be able to render proper accountability on that account; we have therefore for those reasons also thought it best to have the aforementioned Captain Cornelis In 't Anker, retaining his capacity and wages, repatriate on the said vessel the Vreede for such an accounting. And since the very same Captain In 't Anker has also presented to us an account of that which was advanced by him for the purchase of victuals during the stay of the aforesaid vessel the Paarl at Rio de La Goa, and for which he was under the necessity of employing his own goods, the said account amounting to a sum of R. 1577. 42, we take the liberty, at the request of the said Captain In 't Anker, to give your Right Honorable Worships proper notice thereof, to the end that he may further address your Honorable Worships for the satisfaction of that sum. Concerning now the ship the Draak, for the examination and inspection of which and of its onboard cargo a Committee of naval officers and shipwrights was likewise appointed, and it having been confirmed by the same that the few defects found on that vessel were not of such importance that the said ship the Draak cannot with confidence pursue the voyage to the Fatherland; that vessel is thus shortly likewise to proceed with the remaining cargo.
