87 From Mocha under date 15 August 1734 From Mocha under date 15 August 1734 deposition having been read out clearly and distinctly word for word, the same persisted therein, as not knowing that anything more could be added to or removed from it, and spoke therefore in confirmation thereof the solemn words: So truly help me God Almighty. Furthermore, we the undersigned Jan Jacob Slatter and Francois Butger declare for the truth on behalf of those whom it may concern, that we, by order of the Residents of this Trading Post, went to the alphandigo or weighing house for the delivery of 2 suckels of mace brought this year by the ship De Jonge Willem, which suckels were first weighed on the Company's scale and yielded Three Hundred Twenty-Four Pounds, and in the Alphandigo Eleven frasels and A half, which multiplied by 28 pounds makes 322 lb, being in the Alphandigo 2 lb less than on the Honourable Company's scale, so that each frasel comes to 28 2/3 lb; subsequently the suckels were emptied and weighed in the Alphandigo with their dust and found in tare one frasel and Nine man, deducted from the aforementioned 11 frasels and 5 man, there remains net what was delivered to the Merchants 9 2/5 frasels or 368 14/15 lb, each frasel calculated at Twenty-Eight Pounds; whereon we also took the dust of the 2 suckels and weighed it on the Company's scale and found 11 lb net and gross thirteen pounds, and in which bag a note was placed and its Gross Pounds written down and signed by us, subsequently the top of the bag was sealed, all done in the presence of the Warehouse Master Ras Macquet; that which is written above we declare to be the pure truth and remain prepared, if necessary, to confirm with a solemn Oath, Mocha the 10 March 1734: (was signed) Jn J:b Slatter and F.s Butger. Subsequently it is also agreed and according to written orders to keep record to settle the debt of Cassum Turbettij with the general Trading Post, in order to let it run henceforth pro memoria within his account: Likewise to settle the Metal weights being 40 pieces or 1101 4 Pounds with the House expenses, as well as the bunting, matches, nails, Planks. Item the Porcelain settled with Extraordinary Expenses. 22 frasels or 616 Pounds of Socotra aloe, for Batavia, Purchased at 4 Spanish reals the frasel, stands And: 89 Mocha under date 15 August 1734. 7 From Mocha under date 15 August 1734 And whereas the surgeon's mate and Assistants appointed to this Trading Post have frequently brought forward their complaints that they could not get by on their board money, therefore it is hereby approved and Resolved to grant them each 40 lb of rice per month in addition to their board money. Appearing at this Sitting in assembly the Surgeon's mate Pieter Aijkens of Greuningen appointed to this Trading Post, together with the provisional Corporal Fredrik Gotskouw of Coningsbeengen, together with Four common sentry guards, urgently requesting their relief from here, since their bond to the Honourable Company had Expired; therefore it was approved to grant these petitioners their discharge, and in their place to draft by order from the Company's ship De Jonge Willem the surgeon's mate Hendrik Matthijs Haver of Freckenhorst together with the Corporal David Sondergeld of Straalsond and 4 common sentry guards, intending presently to make do with 1 Corporal and 4 common soldiers. There has also come forward the Youth David Vellij van Dondij, being the nephew of the deceased master Doncanus Lauwlan, with a heartfelt prayer: that while he had now lost his uncle, was also fatherless and motherless, and knew nobody in our Fatherland except his aunt, the widow of the aforementioned deceased, and if in case the Lord God should also come to take her, that her children would then have to go into the Orphanage in Vlissingen, and he being presently only 11 Years old, not knowing where in the world he would then end up, that the Residents would please take him into this Trading Post and under protection; which heartbreaking request has moved the Undersigned to retain this boy, the more so because he is already beginning to write passably, and has also advanced further in the Art of reckoning, intending to have him instructed in the Arabic language, so that the Company in due time shall enjoy his due services, judging that an Arabic-speaking European is very useful at this Trading Post. Whereas the provisional master Jan de Jonge has given us to understand that he had no more weight on his keel than 30000 pounds of Siamese sappanwood, and therefore it was highly Necessary to have Some materials for ballast before and prior to him being able to put to sea, we therefore wanted to give this ship salt for ballast just as the preceding Year, but this could not succeed, because the insolent Arabs dare to demand from us more than double the price that was paid the previous Year.

In the highly respected letter most recently received by us, their Right Honorable High Respected Lordships have been pleased to order to retain in this residency 200000 guilders light money out of the available cash, in order to be able, with and in addition to those moneys which are to be gained from trade this year, to secure the purchase of a full cargo of coffee. Therefore, it is approved by this resolution to send a sum of 80000 Spanish reals to Batavia. Lastly, it is also decided at this meeting, following the greatly respected orders of Your Right Honorable High Respected Lordships, to allow the junior merchants Jan Willem vander Sturck and Nicolaas Duijt to depart from this residency by the aforementioned ship De Jonge Willem in order to obtain transport from there to the principal place of your Right Honorable High Respected Lordships. Hoping that this resolution of ours, having been handled according to our conscience, may be approved by their High Noble Lordships the Right Honorable Lord Governor-General and Councillors of the Dutch Indies, as we pray in this regard. The aforesaid resident van den Berg also wished to weigh the stones of 3 and 4 frasels, but this was refused him. Mocha the 15th of August 1734 From Mocha the 15th of August 1734 Sunday the 23rd: The Company's skipper Everhard de Bruijn sent the Company's boat to the French ship with the second mate to demand back a screw-jack, which had been lent in goodwill to the French captain Teriliacq a long time before. Meanwhile, our crew, very furious and desperate, swore with oaths to stick their knives into the Frenchmen's skins and to show them what Hollanders were made of; they wanted to obtain redress and satisfaction by force. Thereupon the Residents had the governor addressed, who referred them to the Qadi, or spiritual judge. Subsequently, the injured men were shown to the just-mentioned judge, who carefully inspected the wounds and assessed the shed blood, and sent the Company's broker back to the governor with a note to subject the French captain to a monetary fine.

From Mocha under date 15 August 1734 From Mocha under Date 15 August 1734 the Arabs who were present brought to our knowledge, whereupon we immediately sent the assistant Francois Butger together with the corporal of the soldiers to the French chief, in order to claim this useless runaway scoundrel in our name and bring him home, which could not be done, because that villain was drunk, so that this morning the French chief came to our Company's lodge to make known, declaring that the often-mentioned villain Slatter had declared to him, the chief, with these expressions: Sir, I am a deserter from the Company and surrender myself entirely to your King Louis the 15th, and in case you do not keep me I shall never return to the Dutch, much rather shall I turn Mahomedan. Whereupon the French chief, cursing him, Slatter, said: go to your lodge and remain in your service, I do not want you, nor do I wish on your account to have any dispute or disagreements with the Dutch residents. The deserter, swearing by a multitude of oaths, declared the French residency to be his home and protection, so if the Dutch got me into their power I shall truly be hanged. The much-mentioned French chief, being at a loss with this scoundrel, partly in our opinion because he, Slatter, is of the Roman religion, and partly upon his given assurance of being strung up, the said chief therefore requested from us a signed letter of pardon, which was granted to him, with the assurance that we would not hang the often-mentioned Slatter, so that he might freely return to his Company's lodge and service (private thoughts are that one need not keep one's word with a rogue any longer than the next opportunity presents itself). The French chief, having been assured and satisfied with this, returned to his residency, yet uttering at his departure: In case the deserter will neither listen nor believe, I shall have him turned out of my lodge, which we were informed would have happened upon the refusal of that honor- and God-forsaken villain. Honorable and Most Esteemed Sirs, we express our indebted gratitude for the various advices and beg pardon regarding said missing declaration, which will now be found among the present papers. The 55 chests of cloves remaining from the previous year as balance were sold this year alongside the entire delivered cargo via the ship De Jonge Willem, with the exception of 11 bales of Ceylon cinnamon. Once again, direct from Europe, an English and a French ship, both being sturdy vessels, have been here for the purchase and loading of coffee beans, so that, with sorrow, due to the high market prices and purchases driven up by them, we had to refrain, and this vessel, like the previous ones, is being sent back empty to Your Honor's Most Esteemed Government.
