For further particulars regarding trade, as well as occurrences and other matters of business, we dutifully refer to our very humble dispatches to Their Right Honorable Excellencies, a copy of which we reverently present herewith to Your Honor. Concluding herewith with cordial wishes that Almighty God may be pleased to keep Your Honor's esteemed person, together with the Company's precious command, in His holy protection, so that they may remain preserved from all disasters. With all respect, the Junior Merchant and chosen First Resident here at the Mocha office, Willem van den Berg, makes known how he arrived at Batavia in the year 1720 on the ship 't Huys de Vlotter as an Assistant at ƒ24 per month, and in the year 1727 was promoted through the favor of Your High Excellencies to Bookkeeper at ƒ30 per month, just as on 20 September 1729 he was likewise promoted to Junior Merchant at ƒ40 per month at the Mocha residency; Your High Excellencies having favored the petitioner in the years 1728 and 1730 by sending him thither as Resident. And in the year 1731, the petitioner was taken from the ship Meermond on the Malabar Coast by the Honorable Mr. Hendrikx as Commissioner, to be employed in his commission. Subsequently, in the year 1733, Your High Excellencies again thought fit to employ the petitioner as chosen First Resident to Mocha. Transfer or conveyance of all such assets as belong in ownership to the Honorable Company at the Mocha office, in accordance with the commercial books under today's date, and this pursuant to the much-honored order of the Most Noble, High and Right Honorable Gentleman and Master Dirk van Cloon, Governor-General, together with the Honorable Gentlemen, Members of the Council of the Dutch Indies, made by the former Resident of this office, Junior Merchant Jan Willem van der Sturck, to his successor, the fellow Junior Merchant Willem van den Berg. We can assure Your Right Honourables that the company, regarding the purchase price of coffee in earlier times having been so often and grossly deceived, has finally caused us to resolve to fix the price thereof at 10 stuijvers the lb; yet in such a way that we have indeed been willing to leave it to Your Honour to go somewhat outside this limit and to do everything that Your Honour, in case of necessity, should judge to be suitable and of greatest service to the Company, as can be seen by our letter of 28 August 1727. However, having experienced and for reasons that have since been given, and also having been able to believe that it was not possible to obtain a sufficient quantity at the aforesaid price, we have, according to our letter of 14 September 1731, further resolved to increase the same to 11 stuijvers in light money, provided it is free of all charges. But although we have not been able to obtain any report about the success of this latest increase up to now, we nevertheless judge it useful not to delay our answer any longer to Your Honour's requisition and questions asked in the general letter of 28 December 1731, whether the coffee should henceforth be burdened with all gifts without distinction, since in our letter of 17 August 1728 mention was made only of the gifts to the Imam and other rulers of the realm, and not to the governors in Mocha; in order not to run the danger that the ships would again have to depart poorly laden, or otherwise to proceed to another proposal made by Your Honour, namely to close the factory entirely and henceforth do nothing other than with a single ship with spices and other goods that are most in demand, as other nations are accustomed to do, we could not obtain the coffee of this year at the fixed price of 11 stuijvers the lb, free money, even if the gifts are not included therein; but at 12 stuijvers we would have been in a position to buy a large part of the cargo. However, we had good hope because the rumours were that Jedda would not come to make any purchases this year, through which normally 10 to 12 thousand bales are gathered and transported overland via Grand Cairo to the Levant; but in the latter part of May we heard to our sorrow that the merchants of Jedda had arrived for the purchase of coffee at Loheija and Hodeida, places lying north of Mocha, closer to Beit al-Faqih than to Mocha, so that the coffee has risen above 13, and almost to 14 stuijvers the lb. From this year the profits will by no means be as much, because trade is at a standstill and is harassed by the governor; sailing back and forth without setting foot ashore, but awaiting interested buyers on board and letting them fetch and buy what they desire for their account; by which means we can indeed, with Your Honour, well understand that not only the charges of this trading post, but also manifold vexations could be prevented, and especially those that currently give rise to bringing an extra stuijver to account yearly for gifts and other expenses. Furthermore, we also believe we have been able to notice from Your Honour's general letter of 25 March 1732 that Your Honour, in order to achieve our goal of being provided again yearly with a good shipload of Arabian beans, would judge it not unserviceable that the Mocha servants be qualified to that end to make the purchase at 11 to 12 light stuijvers. But four days later, all our native servants were driven away from the lodge and it was occupied by three guards, the boat and vessel were seized, and their crew driven inside with beatings of sticks. Thereupon the head money-changer and Hassan Jassoes appeared at the Company's lodge, saying that the governor sent to ask why we had not yet unloaded any goods, as it was already four days ago that we had concluded peace with him, and advising us to discharge the ship and requesting an authorization for the unloading of a vessel with goods. This we had to do, while at the same time saying that the agreement was that we could unload the Company's goods whenever we deemed proper, and that of all the assurances we had so far received no proof. Request to Your High Noble Lordships to provide herein and to prohibit as strictly as Your High Noble Lordships shall deem fit, so that the first resident need have nothing to do with the ship's officers, who ordinarily think that the residents are merely junior merchants, without knowing anything at all of the fact that we represent Your High Noble Lordships here and that our orders depend on Your High Noble Lordships. Therefore, it is our very humble request, to avoid the least trouble, if Your High Noble Lordships approve, to insert it into the instructions of the ship's officers who are destined for this place. And on 6 May, the first undersigned had a request sent to the governor for an audience to speak with him, whereupon he let it be known that the second resident and the skipper of the ship could come. Having appeared there, after the customary compliments were paid, the governor immediately said, meaning thereby the first undersigned, "I want you to send the captain away to Batavia, and the second resident may remain in his place," saying, "he is no good, neither I nor anyone else can get along with him," without being able to demonstrate anything of the sort. Hereupon resident Akersloot replied that without prior knowledge of Your High Noble Lordships, one could not send the first undersigned away. To which the response was given, after he had persisted for a long time nonetheless, "Then I want resident Akersloot to attend to the affairs, for I wish to deal with him alone." Resident Akersloot replied that he could not take this upon himself, but that they should first discuss it. Whereupon we yielded to the governor's wish, as it amounts to the same thing anyway, whoever holds that title with him, because the affairs themselves remained as they are. Hereupon liberty was granted again that everyone could go into the Company's lodge as well as on board, which Your High Noble Lordships may see, if it pleases you, in the daily register from 3 to 7 May. Next, we shall proceed to the trade and state, as can be seen in our resolution of 16 April of this year, that the merchants appeared in the Company's lodge according to old custom and made a bid for the following goods, this being the final offer on the entire parcel, namely: For mace, rd:s 80 per frasel of 28 lb. For cloves, rd:s 52 per frasel of 28 lb. For whole or broken nutmegs, rd:s 36 per frasel of 28 lb. For powdered sugar, rd:s 1 1/4 per frasel of 28 lb. For candy sugar, rd:s 2 per frasel of 28 lb. For tin, rd:s 4 per frasel of 28 lb. For spelter, rd:s 4 1/2 per frasel of 28 lb. For Japan bar copper, rd:s 6 1/2 per frasel of 28 lb. For iron, rd:s 20 per frasel of 28 lb. Under the condition to pay half on 300 Nowruz, being 21 July of this year, and the other half on 200 Nowruz next year, or 12 April. For which price we declined their offer, as firstly the spices do not correspond with their fixed prices, and the other merchandise differed too much from last year, and furthermore was on credit and by installments, which would be entirely contrary to orders. Hereupon our lodge was closed and trade remained suspended, for no one had the courage to buy anything. On 11 May, the Turkish merchant Hassan Jassoes, with four of the principal Banians, bought the entire parcel of powdered sugar at 1 5/8 rd:s per frasel of 28 lb., which we had to concede to them as if forced, in order to open the lodge and thus not be left stuck with the spices and other goods. For the aforementioned sugar can achieve not even 50 percent, being 1/8 rd:s per frasel less than last year. This contract having been concluded, the aforementioned Jassoes said that we could trade with the other merchants as we saw fit. Half an hour later, this purchase was broken off again (which mattered little), because we would have had to dispose of the same for their account, and if it could not be sold, we would have been forced to take back the remainder and be left stuck with it, for this Jassoes does whatever he pleases, as has also been evident with the other nations. No formal resolution was drawn up for this, but Your High Noble Lordships may see it in more detail, if it pleases you, in the daily journal under 11 May and 23 to 24 June. Henceforth, the English and French must pay the heavy customs duties which are ordinarily calculated at 10, 11, 12, and 13 percent, because the governor reckons the 100 rd:s on the goods sold at 120 to 130 and 136 Spanish reals, and the goods that remain unsold shall also be assessed at the same rate.

Merchants are ruined, and must suspend their credit in order to pay for the purchased goods upon resale, which is well and good when they can sell their purchased goods with profit and incur no bankruptcies; for there is no governor who exhausts the people as much as Jacqui Hamet, who has now already ruled since the year 1730. The times are becoming very dangerous, for which reason most merchants are currently not to be trusted. Therefore, the sales of this year are very meager, as will be shown hereinafter. And if the Company wishes to continue and adhere to selling no goods except for cash, we say, with all respect to Your Honors, that it is unnecessary to dispatch a ship here with its full cargo. Rather, it would be much better, according to the proposal of the Gentlemen Masters, if the coffee trade remains thus at the fixed price, to break up the trading post and to sell the goods for cash each year here in the roadstead. The only difficulty concerning this would be drinking water, in the event that the Arabs should refuse all of that to us. Yet, if Your High Honors should resolve upon this, the ship could depart late from Malabar, in the beginning or the end of March, and touch at the island of Socotra to fetch water, because at that time of year one must keep to the south side of the gulf. And by this means, the Honorable Company and its servants would be freed from all vexations, brutal treatments, and extortions, while we give rein to patience. And if the Honorable Company pleases to continue, it will have to content itself with this until such time as matters go too far, in order to then break up the trading post. On which occasion it will not be advisable to load the ship with merchandise, so as not to be encumbered with it here. But, subject to the better judgment of Your High Honors, it would be better to dispatch a sloop from Malabar to fetch the Company's effects and servants, in order to settle all arrears by force the following year, both the bankruptcies and the damages that have been brought upon the Company through their doing, which was paid to the last duit by Mr. Robbert Cowan in the year 1727; also having them pay the expenses of the equipage. And which equipage could be back in Malabar with the opening of the season. We request Your High Excellencies' favor for bottled wine instead of aam-cask wine, since the aam-cask wine is ordinarily spoiled before it arrives here; and likewise, if there should be no fine distilled waters in Batavia, to please send brandy in their place instead, because on several occasions the Batavian distilled waters have been sent back with the request, if there are no better, for brandy. We also request, if Your High Excellencies might see fit, to authorize the ministers of Mallabaar, in case we remain sitting with a large portion of merchandise as is the case now, upon our writing to discharge such goods there whenever they can be sold there with an adequate profit, and to dispatch the remainder here afterwards, for times are becoming bad, so that in the second year much change and instability may occur.
