The revered order sent herewith has been continuously observed as far as possible by those whom one can employ here with some peace of mind in collation, given the importance of that work and the appropriate, obliged vigilance and attention. And in the future, as we may humbly trust, Your Right Honorable, Right Worshipful Excellencies' rightful displeasure in matters corresponding hereto will be avoided to the utmost of our power. Since this results from not passing over this in silence, we earnestly recommend to Your Honors to establish the order that henceforth the duplicate pay books are written clearly and collated accurately, so that in the unexpected misfortune of the loss of the originals, one may safely use the copies, in order thus to fulfill the purpose for which they are sent hither in duplicate aboard various ships. Touched to our soul's grief over the fatal accidents that have befallen the Honorable Company, both regarding the ships mentioned alongside Persia through the detention of the yacht Westvriesland in the Malabar Commandment and the fatal lot that has again struck the Honorable Company through the loss of the richly laden ship Boesselen, having already had the honor in previous dispatched letters to give the dutiful answer thereto, but continuing to pray to Heaven for their safe voyage and that the ships may always arrive according to our sincere wish. Extract from the aforementioned letter dated 8 September 1733 containing the subject matter: Whereas through the wrecking of the return ship Midloo the original Batavian and other pay books shipped therein were rendered useless or lost, one has had to make use here of the duplicates brought over with the ship De Lagepolder. From Persia, 24 August 1735. From Persia, 24 August 1735. The papers having remained behind on both sides, we find no material to write much about the affairs of this directorship. Except only that we, above all previous times, on account of the Basra damages and disasters, have once again great reason to complain, not only about the deplorable state of the trade, with the general profits that in former times used to amount to between 7 and 8 tons of gold across the whole of Persia having been no more in the last accounting year 1733/1734 than f 148698:12:-, against the charges of f 169451:17:-. And we find what has never happened before in the present century, that this trading post, which yielded such considerable profits, as we knew it only a few years ago, to our heartfelt sorrow has declined into a loss of f 20753:5:-. Likewise, the net profits at Basra have amounted to no more than f 10235:13:-. Notwithstanding this, the reckless administration, the plundering and robbing by the Company's own servants, is no less prevalent; for after such a considerable sum of treasure had in former days been handed over to the King of Persia and a balance of around f 170000, as was claimed, buried in the old residence at Isfahan, one sees in the final reckoning that this balance has also disappeared. Finally, so that nothing should be left, the Company falls short on the estate of the former resident Schorer by f 101667:13:-, but on the debt of the brokers the profits in the upcoming accounting year of this directorship, as they were found at that time, can only be detailed for Gamron and Isfahan, as we, due to the absence of the Basra books and writings, are unable to do otherwise; having received from the first-mentioned place since 26 May and 21 August of the past year no report for the Company, we are therefore unable to mention more than was already recorded in our humble letter of 23 September following, which we forwarded to the residents on 24 January of this year with the copy of that letter sent via Lesbroek, that there in one month's time a net profit was made of f 19337:2:8. If, however, we should be provided therewith before the closing of this letter, we shall still be able to serve Your Right Honourable and Worshipful Excellencies according to our bounden duty. Wherefore we shall, of both the aforementioned trading posts combined and also separately, here briefly, but later more fully in all humility, state that the charges in the closed accounting year are together f 153160. The net profits in the closed accounting year of Gamron alone, f 182204:14:-. The first subtracted from the latter leaves a profit of f 29044:14:-. And if one here adds the aforementioned Isfahan charges of f 7522:18:8, then Gamron alone makes a net profit of f 36567:3:12 2/5. And by comparison according to the Gamron books, the gross profits after deduction of 1 per cent brokerage are f 112495:16:10. The charges of both trading posts subtracted, being f 15316:8:1 1/15, leaves a greater profit of f 97179:8:4 4/5. Add hereto the Isfahan charges in favour of Gamron of f 7522:18:8, so the Gamron gross profits yield f 104702:6:12 4/5. Deducting from this the monetary losses at net yield of f 68135:3:-, the result is again as above, f 36567:3:12 2/5. And since the present state of the realm is not much better than Your Right Honourable and Worshipful Excellencies were recently informed by us in all humility, one must continuously maintain hope that by the good pleasure of the Almighty, after our heartfelt prayers, it may be governed by a calmer bearer of the crown, accompanied by greater noble acknowledgement toward the restitution of Your Right Honourable and Worshipful Excellencies' so remarkable losses suffered and the revival of merchandise, than can at present with any foundation be expected of Thamas Chan, even if he remained what he now is. Of His Majesty Thamas one hears nothing but varying rumours; he has been taken, with permission of Thamas Chan, to a place called Simmoen, situated 16 days' travel from Isfahan on account of the bad air, to Mazandaran in order to achieve his convalescence, since he has for some time suffered from various bodily illnesses. And although it is still maintained and spoken of that he will be restored to his throne, such is nevertheless, in the judgement of those with any penetration in Persia, not acceptable, at least as long as the said Thamas Chan has the troops on his side and does not become unhappier in the war. We shall apparently, through incoming advices during the writing and before the completion of this letter, be enabled in due course to place a more accurate report before the eyes of Your Right Honourable and Worshipful Excellencies. Wherefore, with humble reverence, we shall proceed again from this to the trade, which here since 1 February of the past year until 16 June last, driven by the blessing of Heaven, has been found to yield a new profit of 16940:17:-. In such manner, Your Right Honourable and Worshipful Excellencies will see this respectfully demonstrated further and more amply behind in its proper place. We shall then briefly state here that if on 27 March last the progress of trade, in regard of Your Right Honourable and Worshipful Excellencies' further interests with the closing of business on time, both in the barter of all kinds of goods (which principally consisted of asafoetida and madder roots) as well as cash, had not been hindered by the English with the Khorasan and other merchants of this place, we could undoubtedly have flattered ourselves with far better success; all the more because thereby, on 12 April first upon general inquiry and after that date on 5 May by identical estimate, one was practically compelled to lower candy sugar by half a mamudi, or f -:4:4.

From Persia, the 24th of August 1735. was received, to the end that such measures might then be taken as can be hoped for in the present time, rather than setting it at no. 5 1/2, or f 26. 12, instead of 16 mahmudis or f 2. 1. —, which price was long regarded as desperate, whereby the merchant raised objections and made a request, so that another defect might be compensated. Regarding powdered sugar, on account of its quality being unlike that of the said nation, since they trade much Bengal sugar among it, we have let it continue at the old price of 3 1/2 mahmudis or f 1. 9. 12. But to induce us to desist entirely from it was beyond expectation. Regarding the coarse Bengal sort of chamchanuys, of which mention was also made in our aforementioned last letter dated the 9th of October of the past year, as well as the said resolution of the 5th of May, we likewise had to accommodate ourselves to the times by reducing them by 1/2 mahmudi, or f —. 4. 4 per piece, or from 17 mahmudis, being f 7. 4. 8, to 16 1/2 mahmudis, or f 7. —. 8, because in fact the merchant seemed entirely intent on washing his hands of that linen, both because of its poor condition according to their pretext, and out of our true consideration that those cloths, which had already lain in the warehouses here for about 5 years, could very easily become mildewed, which would not be possible to prevent upon longer retention; it being only desired that all this will not only be deemed agreeable to Your Noble, Right Honorable Esteemed Intention, but will also in time be found to square with its interests. Furthermore, we hope by the blessing of the Almighty, even before this financial year is ended, to see the aforementioned profits considerably augmented through a good sale of goods, to the end that, being ready, we shall faithfully observe the point of retrenchment in duty for the curtailing of expenses, which (so to speak) have continually swallowed up most of the profits unperceived. f 14721. 19. 8 was reduced, so that this large bill of exchange now still amounts to f 103585. 5. —. This latter matter, although in comparison to all those great losses it is hardly worth mentioning, nevertheless constitutes all the good news to be found in the entire Persian affair. For that the officials, after the passage of so many consecutive years, in which the servants, deserving of pity from Your Noble, Right Honorable Esteemed Persons, were plunged into a pool of desperation over the caused deficits through the so unheard-of living, dying, and former Chief Schorer, are still in the same condition; and God knows whether anything of note will ever be obtained from his outstanding debts toward the liquidation of the debt so greatly outstanding and left in arrears to the Honorable Company. We do not fail, however, repeatedly to exhort the bookkeeper Mattheus van Leipsigh, currently residing there, to which he has been successively written regarding the Kirman wool for the Fatherland, and he was recently prompted again on the 1st of April with the transmission of extracts from the highly esteemed Batavian missive brought by the Valkenisse, pertaining thereto and being urged in accordance with the highly wise instruction of the High Indian Government, that debit still being burdened with f 3852. 17. 4/5 or 9065 4/5 mahmudis, for the reason that those moneys were collected on the brokers' bills of exchange, but were also withheld, as followed in our dutiful letter dated the 3rd of November 173[illegible] departed per the Jacoba for Batavia, and which, in copy, accompanied our submissive report to Your Noble, Right Honorable Esteemed Persons on the 6th of February thereafter via Aleppo. Regarding the further state of this so important matter, we shall, with the pleasure of Your Noble, Right Honorable Esteemed Persons, as we can do no other, pause a little, since we have received no reply to our aforementioned writing. To send off goats and sheep for the Cape and Jaffanapatnam, they finally got round to moving, to let some of that tea depart for Batavia with the ill-fated ship Borsselen, and had they sent none of the wool, it would have been better; which we therefore, as yet with regard to the Kirman wool, order that in the future, and by every shipping opportunity, it will have to be done: the bucks and sheep directly to Ceylon, and so forth after the necessary quantity has been kept there for Jaffanapatnam, to let them proceed to the Cape as being by far the shortest route, unless you were inclined to send them otherwise. In the previously cited humble letters of ours of the 23rd of September of the past year, in dutiful obedience to Your Noble, Right Honorable Esteemed Persons' highly esteemed letter of the 14th of October 1731, an account was rendered of the bucks and sheep demanded and sent per date, and that at that time 59 pieces were also delivered, namely 20 pieces of goats and 10 bucks for Batavia, 19 goats and 10 bucks for Ceylon, these per Castor and Pollux, and the first-mentioned tea per Barneveld. In the hope of honored permission, we take the liberty most humbly to conduct ourselves accordingly. And whereas the requisition of 72 pieces, namely 48 pieces of sheep and 24 bucks for Batavia and Ceylon, each a half part, recently received per the Valkenisse, was immediately given to the wool factor who had previously arrived in loco from Kirman, pursuant to the resolution of the 7th of February, the said gentleman having orally stipulated that if, beyond that number, small animals could also be contracted for, it would be all the more agreeable. These factors having combined, departed on 1 April, and on the ultimate ditto were followed by that of the English nation, or rather Mr. Widwel, to whom, during a farewell visit to the first signatory hereof, after an offer of service, a letter was entrusted for delivery to Monsieur Clement, specially containing that he should cause the Daria-begi Auwan Nees to procure the aforementioned 72 pieces of sheep and goats the sooner the better, since they had not yet been brought at that time, and to demand, according to the deliberation held on the same day, 190 lb of uncleaned wool, and as much red as possible, in order to experience in time, through cleaning both at Batavia and here, on sound grounds, on what footing Your Right Honorable worships' management could properly be attended to, with humble prayer for these obliged undertakings. Also, that our factors have been instructed to proceed by degrees, yet ultimately not to go higher than 15 to 20 mamudis for 6 lb of cleaned wool, provided also that no money of the aforementioned 300 tomans given to them as an advance may be laid out or invested until they saw that the fleece could not be obtained for it, and even then first to request our order, to the end that it might appear to them that one had to proceed with caution regarding the master's purse, and not act recklessly. All further circumstances and motives still relating hereto Your Right Honorable worships will, if pleased, find extended in the cited extract resolutions, both common and secret, which accompany the enclosed separate humble dispatches of today's date, to which we not only refer in the most humble manner, but also boldly hope that our conduct in the subject case will be seen applauded with Your Right Honorable worships' highly honored satisfaction. Furthermore, in the hope of a favorable interpretation, we take the liberty to add hereto that for the preservation of the young and old 89 animals reviewed hereinbefore, we had the same shorn, and received therefrom 35 lb of raw wool, intending, for the enrichment of the aforementioned objective, to make a beginning with having it combed, in case good connoisseurs can be obtained for that purpose; and since they are not at hand, we have caused further inquiries to be made after those people, whither they might have retired during the time of the extraordinary extortions. Concerning the crocus orientalis, it serves in all humility to state that it is here of the same nature and property as the saffron that occurs in Europe, and is used much by the people of this land in the so-called dish pilaf. Those flowers, for the rest, come from Isfahan, and the best sort grows in the province of Sirjan Kashan, 36, and from the aforementioned capital, 60 ordinary days' journeys. In the year 1701, the same was purchased there at the requisition of the Ceylon and Malabar ministers at no. 60 or ƒ 25. 10. —, and also sent away on 4 May following per the Kasteel Batavia. Since that time, nothing more has been requisitioned, probably for the reason that it will not have been found as pleasant nor as agreeable as that which one obtains from the motherland. Regarding the woollens, we bring to the attention of Your Right Honourable and High Esteemed Lordships, in all reverence, that out of 44 pieces totaling 2279½ ells received from Batavia by the ships Barbesteijn on 6 November of last year and Elsbroek on 28 January thereafter, in the recently closed financial year 545 ells have been disposed of here with a net return of 31 1/3 per cent, barely conforming to the already dispatched net return of last year, and according to the books after deduction of 1 per cent brokerage, 68 1/3 per cent total. From Persia, 24 August 1735. matter of Sumatra has occurred, we judge it will by no means be of service, wherefore, in order not to fall from one evil into another, we, to prevent greater damage, have judged it better that your ministers also qualify for a modest increase of the assortments that are most required for India, as this, for the above-mentioned reasons, is considered by us an accident which must be attributed to the injuries of time, and cannot be ascribed to the negligence or unfaithful conduct of the ministers; but of an entirely different appearance has occurred to us the suspicious purchase of opium at Patna, of which you made mention in your letter of 28 December 1731, saying that it appeared to you extremely suspicious and that you therefore gave notice to the servants in serious terms how one had managed to provide oneself with that merchandise early on and at a low market, and after it had significantly increased in price, or possibly was driven up by these sellers themselves, had in a shameful and faithless manner palmed it off on the Honourable Company at the highest price. That being the case, it is incomprehensible to us how you could have left that matter with a verbal reproach or a simple warning, and did not immediately carry out what you threaten, and what we also understand must in the future be put into effect without delay or respect of persons, namely that such faithless servants, even upon the first suspicion of infidelity, must be removed from their posts and summoned to Batavia without rank and without salary, in order to answer there legally for their suspicious conduct and, being found guilty, to be punished as an example to others. Of no better nature also appear to us the continual complaints of the Cossimbazar servants about the excessive dearness of silk, which also from time to time, as you very well noted in your letter of 28 December 1731, have been practiced and pretended in order to deceive the Honourable Company; for we have already long since been informed and warned by the merchants in the fatherland that the English Company in Europe manages to make much more profit on their silk than we do, since, as appears from our previous writings, we are forced, because of the poor return, almost entirely to abandon that merchandise, unless one could hold the servants to their duty not to proceed so coarsely and not to spend more for it than the English and other nations are accustomed to do. That the Bengal ministers have left the requisition of cowries unfulfilled because of the stay-away of the Maldives voyagers, and that no more was brought there than what the English and French had fetched with their own vessels from those islands, is likewise nothing other than a malicious design and negligence of the Ceylon ministers, who, contrary to our so frequently repeated orders, have ceased the voyages to the Maldives, which then, among other matters, is left to the accountability of those who are guilty of it. Just as you also, with much reason, have reserved for accountability the malicious and self-interested conduct of the Japan Chief Bokesteijn, as having wanted to blame the Bengal servants for the loss of profit that the Honourable Company had suffered in Japan on the Tesser alegias and ginghams, taffechelas, under the pretext that those fabrics were not found to be of such quality and sorting as the swatches sent over, whereas nevertheless, upon confrontation of some bales brought to Batavia against the said swatches, it had appeared that those swatches could not compare infinitely in weave nor quality to the fabric found in the opened bales; and thus the decline of the trade is caused by the Company's own servants, of which notable branches have already been lost, and one is now forced

The primary trading posts and factories of India, which previously were a support to the Company, are being abandoned in a lamentable and no less irresponsible manner. We also consider the retention of the Company's suppliers and brokers, particularly those who are competent and serve honestly, as a matter greatly tending toward the preservation and well-being of trade. From Persia, the 24th of August 1735. the ministers judge that the militia could not at all be spared, and although the intention had never been to employ them against the nabob or his pretensions, but solely to prevent the extortion of money on the road by private landholders, which for 7 consecutive years had indeed been so far successful that one had thereby gained that the goods were not detained by one or another insolent river guard; it nevertheless remaining true that escorting with the militia had generally cost more than even all the extortions, the ministers had proposed as an expedient and made request to be authorized to conclude an agreement with the two most powerful landholders, being the head of the sjekwaards and the kerkpoursen ragia, and to be permitted to pay them an annual recognition fee, the first of 1000 and the other of 1300 ropias, for free passage through their lands, when they could make that journey in peace with two Company soldiers less than is currently done. We have written about this matter repeatedly and for several consecutive years, but however one seemed to grasp or understand it, it was always, as they say, threshing water; therefore we can as yet not say or answer otherwise than that we leave the same entirely to Your Honour's disposal, and expect from the ministers in Bengal that they will proceed herein with the greatest economy for the Honourable Company and do that which faithful and honest servants are bound and ought to do for the service of their lords and masters. That the servants at Patna, upon received intelligence—after they had passed the spruijt Dekka and Romika Faula without hindrance the year before, and having discovered another passage than that dangerous one along the sea beach at Sagres—had resolved to make a trial of that route as well, is well done; but it would have been even better if they had discovered that passage through their own vigilance and had preceded the English herein, instead of having to follow them. The accession of Director Berenard in place of the departed Director Jacob Sadelijn is agreeable to us, and since we have understood with pleasure from the letter of the ministers of the 18th of November 1731 that the profit account in that year was closed even more favorably than the year before by a fine amount of ƒ40806: 10: 8, and the prospects for a better trade began to appear somewhat more favorable, we shall likewise expect that the said Director Berenard will make his utmost endeavor to maintain it on that footing, and particularly that the large supply of cash which according to the latest advices was still on hand in cash to the amount of ƒ3805938. 7. 8, through good management and frugal housekeeping, shall be employed to the greatest benefit and advantage of the Company. The collection of linens, according to the writing of the ministers of the 22nd of March and 27th of October 1731, having turned out uncommonly poorly both for us and Your Honour, such that along the entire coast in that year no more could be obtained than a small number of 1573 packs, and therefore a very notable quantity of 1848 ditto less than the year before, the ministers give as the reason for that meager collection the unheard-of shortage of cotton yarn and the ceaseless agitation of the competitors, such that it was beyond living memory to have experienced the like; besides that the English, French, and other native traders were also early in motion to collect the linens for trade to the Manilhas, Achim, Arabia, and other regions, there having been transported from there with 10 small ships and 4 brigantines to Mocha and other places, besides a multitude of small wares, 2759 packs of linens and cloths, and from Paliacatta in particular with a brigantine to Malacca and a thonij to Ceylon another equal number of 2759 pieces of various sorts. Now, whether all these packs and pieces were indeed of such poor constitution as the ministers come to say in the above-mentioned letter of the 22nd of March 1731—that they had to reject such sorts and decline entire lots at once because sometimes not a single one was found among them that could hold the sort, which then was also said to be the true cause why the ship 't Hoff Niet Altijd Winter had to return to Batavia with only 601 packs of cloths—we shall for the present leave in its place, as being a matter unknown to us and which might well merit Your Honour's further investigation; the more so because the linens brought to Europe by the English and French were not found to be of such poor constitution. And as regards the assortments for India, in that respect we see with surprise that so great a quantity of cloths was dispatched with native vessels to the Maldives.

Persia, the 24th of August 1735. dispatched, which reminds us of what was stated in the previous year regarding the improvement of trade between Malacca and those islands, whether some of that kind of cloth which is so desired in Manila, and which according to orders must be sorted out and excluded for the fatherland, could be sent with profit and in some quantity to Malacca, in order to be disposed of there alongside the cinnamon to the Isfahan traders, and furthermore to make use of what was stated in our letter of the 23rd of June 1724 both for India and the fatherland; which we also find has already been decided in council by the Nagapattinam ministers, to accept all on-hand and delivered linens of lesser length and breadth against proportionate prices. This we approve, provided care is taken that those lesser sorts are packed separately in parcels or cases, and the length and breadth are noted thereon or alongside, so that one is not sold here for the other, which has frequently caused disputes with buyers. That a list was sent from Machilipatnam to the main factory of all such silk fabrics as are brought to the first-mentioned factory by foreign merchants, Moors, and Pathans, we consider a good thing; as we also have seen with pleasure from the general letter of the 28th of December 1731 how Your Honours had given thought to introducing several more kinds of merchandise into this government, including those brought there by other nations, provided they can be traded for a passable modest profit. In this hope and expectation, the ministers in a further missive of the 7th of September 1731 also believed that, in time, a reasonable quantity of both powder and candy sugar, alum, spelter, and other kinds of goods could be vented, which they would include to that end in their requisitions to Batavia. The Bengal, Coromandel, Surat, and other ministers in the cloth quarters, although Your Honours according to the aforementioned letter of the 28th of December 1731 did not seem to have the highest opinion of some of these, but because we could not yet properly discern from that writing whether that tends to the short term, we judge it not unwise that a trial be made thereof in accordance with the desire of the Coromandel ministers, if only for the present to somewhat obstruct other nations, which are so very troublesome to the procurement of linens, and to divert them from that trade. They will also do well, if any fabrics of silk, wool, cotton, or any other weave should come before them that are as yet unknown or not so common here in the fatherland, to send over some samples thereof, so that one might see what they might yield upon sale and order a larger quantity of the best sorts. According to Your Honours' letter of the 31st of May 1731, the ministers were reproached on account of their unreasonable demand for 6 to 700,000 guilders in gold for the minting of pagodas and 1,600 troy marks in bar silver for Pulicat rupees, after a rough calculation showed that across the whole of Coromandel a stock of about 2,412,509 guilders, 18 stivers, 9 penningen in cash had still been on hand. Which, added to the poor collection of linens spoken of here, and what according to that same letter has come into the cash treasury through trade from the 1st of September 1729 to the last of August 1730, amounting to a handsome capital of 1,125,731 guilders, 9 stivers, 10 penningen, as well as what, according to Your Honours' letters of the 12th of October 1731 and the 14th of February 1732, has conversely been sent back from Coromandel to Batavia, namely with the ship 't Hof niet altijd Winter 196,417 guilders, 4 stivers, and with Padmos, Huis te Hoten, and De Buis 639,641 guilders, 14 stivers, 11 penningen, making, for as much as we can trace from the papers, together not more than 836,058 guilders, 18 stivers, 11 penningen, it cannot be understood by any reason what is being done here on the coast with such great largesse of money, unless it is being abused and private trade is being conducted with the Company's own funds. Nevertheless, in view of the ample supply of gold at Batavia, Your Honours were inclined to send 600,000 guilders of gold—which Your Honours say was demanded from the Netherlands expressly for this government—to Coromandel in reduction of that demand. This we likewise have learned with great displeasure, for since enough gold is to be had in India and at a much lower price than that for which we can send it to Your Honours from here, one might well have omitted that demand from the fatherland at the time. All the more so because for about three years now we have observed from the letters that Your Honours have excused the gold at various out-factories, where one is customary to trade it for the Honourable Company, because of the large supply at Batavia; from which it is to be concluded that one had no need to demand it from the fatherland in the first place, and in general that one does not proceed with sufficient attentiveness in demanding cash.
