3809 Extract Resolution taken in the Council of Gamron Departed in order to [illegible] with the ambassador Abdul Bagi previously sent to Constantinople, who has returned according to the rumors, to convey him to His Majesty. The postillion has related that no battle had occurred, but that he had seen the Khan with all his [illegible] on Sunday the 31st of March, Anno 1737. Proceeding from this to the recommended fortifications, and first concerning the arrival of Bassora's first resident George Gutchi to the commercial administration, and likewise the second in command, the Honorable Abraham van Suchtelen, as merchant and warehouse master in loco, it was noted that due to the death of the elected provisional head, the Honorable Cornelis Engelsen, on the 13th of this month, there is presently no one to whom so weighty an establishment could be entrusted as commander, on account of the lack of experience and few years in this directorship; and also that if that post were left in completely strange hands it would apparently fall into total disorder, and there would be little expectation of collecting the outstanding debts and a proper redress of the internal affairs, in case the same is urgently required on account of the known creditors of Moeltjent there. Therefore, the Lord Commander submitted for mature consideration how one should conscientiously act in this regard, and at the same time put to the vote whether to let Mr. Gutchi continue to serve at Bassora, and to have the second in command and elected warehouse master, the Honorable Abraham van Suchtelen, come up here in his place to serve as commercial bookkeeper, requesting to know the judgment of the Council on this matter. When this was maturely and with much deliberation considered by each of the members, after further discussions were held, they agreed, with the exception of the junior merchant Nicolaas Duijt, whose opinion was that Mr. Gutchi ought to be summoned up to serve the post of commercial bookkeeper in loco, to confirm the Lord Commander's proposal. Consequently, the decision was reached to let the Honorable George Gutchi remain at Bassora as head, and to have his second in command, the Honorable Abraham van Suchtelen, come up here as commercial bookkeeper until such time as further orders shall be obtained in this regard from Their High Excellencies the Supreme Indian Government, whose approval of what has been decided here according to best judgment we remain hoping for in all humility. And since the office of warehouse master became vacant through this disposition, after it was put to the vote whom one should choose for this, it was unanimously decreed to let the junior merchant and elected Bassora second in command, Boomreester, who has already also conducted the commercial work for a considerable time and is the successor of the aforementioned Van Suchtelen, function further as provisional warehouse master. And concerning the post of second in command at Bassora that fell vacant thereby, the Lord Commander proposed to the Council whom one should elect for this, submitting that the junior merchant and fiscal Christoffel de Haan was the next in rank for it; which was likewise confirmed by each of the members without exception. But the said fiscal, learning of this decision, requested to be permitted to continue in loco or else to depart for Batavia. Whereupon, having stepped outside at the request of the Lord Commander, the matter was further deliberated and it was asked generally whether any of the members supported this request; which being answered with silence, it appeared at the same time that each persisted in their previous statement. Thereupon, the said fiscal was called back inside and informed of our further decision, whereupon he willingly reconciled himself to it. And concerning this office of fiscal about to become vacant, it being put to the vote who should be employed to fill the vacancy, the votes collectively fell upon the provisional secretary Jacobus van Schoonderwoert, except for those of the newly arrived junior merchants, who maintained that they had a greater right in that regard because the said provisional secretary had not yet obtained his approval in that rank. The votes being tied there, the casting vote rested solely with the Lord Commander, who then also, in consideration of the already demonstrated zeal and vigilance in the Company's service and seeing that it has never been practiced otherwise here when no person in actual service of the Supreme Government had been sent for it, also added his vote for the aforementioned Schoonderwoert. With unanimous consent, the junior merchant Nicolaas Duijt was elected to the office of secretary, and likewise the ordinary commissionership of the warehouses was assigned to the junior merchants Jan Hendrik Roscher and Cornelis van Rhee. The fellow junior merchant Jan Willem Schults shall demonstrate his assistance at the secretariat and in other important work, both in collating and otherwise, just as the aforementioned Roscher also promised at the request of the Lord Commander to assist His Honour upstairs; likewise, each of them shall only take over their transfers after the departure of the fiscal Christoffel de Haan. 3811 Extract from the Resolution taken in the Council of Gamron Monday the 22nd of April 1737. The Council having assembled upon the convocation of the Honorable Director, and having taken their seats in due order, there came before them for resumption the newly received net wool account from Kirman with the documents relating thereto, whereupon they first discovered the difference for the worse compared to our previous opinion, and what had already been made known per Ritthem to their Right Honorable, Valiant, Highly Esteemed the High Indies Government at Batavia, that in so far as could then be ascertained, the man of 6 lb of that fleece would have come to cost no more than 15 sh:s and had also been charged at that price according to the invoice; whereas it is now, to our regret and causing no small wonder, that Messrs. Pieter Sluijsvoet, Senior Merchant Martijn, and Jacobus van Loon were commissioned, each having purchased a part of that fleece, to confront the said account with the letters received at successive times from the Armenian Auwannees, which, after their most accurate examination, were found to agree, and reflecting upon a comparison of the previous year's harvest of 1735/6 against that of 1736/7, that this increase had principally arisen, partly due to the necessary extra expenses to be made for His Majesty, and partly through the lower rate of the exchange course caused by the scarcity of money, the requisitioning of pack animals, etc., as can be seen in more detail in the report drawn up concerning this and now exhibited: Report made, and in all respect delivered, to the Honorable, Right Venerable Mr. Carel Hoenad, Senior Merchant and Director of this Persian Direction and its Jurisdiction, together with the Council. Honorable, Right Venerable Commanding Sir, and Honorable Sirs, Pursuant to Your Honors' orders, exactly and most accurately to inspect the wool account of the year 1736/7 recently, or on the 16th of this month, received from Kirman, drawn up and sent over by the Armenian Godje Auwannees, we the undersigned, in observance thereof, have effected the same in the presence of the first sworn clerk of this Gamron Secretariat, Joris Brand, and after accurate inspection and confrontation of the letters written by him from there at various times, found them to agree, and upon comparison of the old account of last year's harvest, or that of the year 1735/6, against the same, found that: so that they might not be at a loss for its provision at Isfahan, a cafilah with 200 to 250 thom:s in trade goods at purchase price will be sent up, to the end of ascertaining whether thereby the heavy burdens of that office could be somewhat alleviated, or brought completely into balance; whereupon, after mature deliberation, it was unanimously judged that this should be undertaken, to see whether a small profit might be obtained there for the Honorable Company, and whereby the residents would not only be put in a position to fulfill the petitioned goods, but also principally all losses of the exchange course up to ½ percent would be recovered. Concerning the business at Kirman, the Honorable Director submitted for mature deliberation, in order to comply in due form with the most wise order, whether the collection for the quantity of 20000 lb of wool might not be left entrusted solely to Auwannees, or whether one or two Europeans should be sent there again; whereupon, first reflecting upon the war, which could cause great extortions and oppressions, as, God mend it, daily all too many complaints are heard of this from merchants as well as others, etc., and partly that a European residing there in this juncture of times would certainly receive far too great demands to reach into his master's purse in one way or another, wherefore it was collectively judged best rather to leave this gathering to the Armenian Godje Auwannees alone, until one could rest somewhat easier with the times, the more so as an Armenian, in unexpected events, through his industry alone would find himself better able to save himself. Extract of the Resolution taken in the Council of Gamron Tuesday, the 30th of April, 1737. The Council having assembled on the invitation of the honorable Commander, His Honor repeated the abominable case of the Honorable Company's former Spahan broker Esagha Natta, who, in vengeance against his persecutors, having been for some time under arrest by the Beglerbegi upon their accusations, since he saw no other way out, had resolved on the 25th of this month to change his religion into that of the Muselmen. Which, however, through the intervention of one Nagha Godssael Goederie and other friends at the Commander's request, by recalling the deplorable case that befell the Honorable Company in Spahan 24 years ago, and pointing out to the said His Highness that this would resonate very far and bring him no reputation, as well as a promise to his favorites of 17 to 18 pieces for settlement, and as most members know, was redressed, nullified, and he appeared again on that very same day in his former state, currently being sheltered in the interpreter's country house. The Beglerbegi having privately, through the said Godssael, advised that it would be best of all if he, Nagha Natta, after settling his affairs, departed from these lands to Dieu. But since it had become known on the evening of the 24th of his intended departure, early the next morning by order of the said Commander, for reasons, the following was carried out and surrendered: Insertion: Notice of all found papers and writings, etc., belonging to Nagha Natta. The Commander further proposing, in order to assist that man before and as far as feasible, it was deemed advisable for our peace of mind and also the court's to have a secretarial bond passed, to appear at all times, either in loco or within the Honorable Company's jurisdiction in other more convenient places, since one cannot know what inquiries or orders one might have to undergo in the future, in order not to be embarrassed. Which was then likewise approved by everyone; and furthermore harmoniously resolved to have the aforementioned sum of up to 18 thoman (in case it might not be set lower), already promised for the conclusion of that affair as being inevitable in obtaining such favor, whereby it was hoped a great stumbling block would be cleared out of the way, paid from the Honorable Company's cash, crediting the brokers for it, and charging the gifts account. After the usual compliments and titles: Preceded by high-sounding compliments [illegible] and in the event that the mentioned monies granted to me on my head, it will be necessary that [illegible] His Majesty be petitioned, in order to learn what order that monarch will now be pleased to grant regarding this, so that [illegible] your Highness, Mr. Clement. Translation of a Persian letter written under date 15th of April 1737 to His Highness the Beglerbegi Mohamed [illegible] to the encampment, lying [illegible] outside this city, sent per David Sahid.
