We hope that our wish, alongside countless others, may endure. By the Lord's grace, the blessing upon the government is not to be doubted; thereupon relying, we offer our humble congratulations, praying God that everything may be directed to the best of our Lords and Masters, to the increase of His High Honor's already acquired glory, and in the confidence of being able to give satisfaction to the subordinates. Communication of this has been made to all in this directorate who fall under the Dutch jurisdiction; all at this trading post are ready to recognize and obey the said His High Honor in that illustrious government, just as we hereby insert the passage from the letter from the motherland concerning this directorate, with the polite reply added thereto. From Souratta the 20th April 1736 How the times of this directorate change from bad to worse has been brought before the eyes of the Gentlemen of the High Indian Government in truth by successive humble advices sent separately, so that the decay of trade, under favorable trust, is not to be attributed to any diminished zeal, but it is indeed lamentable for us that the effort expended is crowned with no better success. But regarding the weighing of the packs and their differences upon further checking of the scales at diverse times and places, we can serve no other statement in good conscience than that this is experienced right here within a short distance from the trading post Brootchia at the shipment there and the receipt here, let alone with their transport to India's principal place. There is in no way any fault in the weights, since the sample weights sent over are checked yearly according to the orders. The sizing of the starched and gummed pieces undoubtedly attracts the damp climates to itself and thereby increases in weight, whereas on the contrary they decrease again with the dry winds in hot times; concerning this, the necessary explanation has already been demonstrated dutifully several times, without our being able to prevent it, but rather its exact fulfillment remains observed. The further points set down here shall serve as our instruction, to be followed obediently. The papers of this directorate have likewise yielded nothing remarkable other than the poor state of trade, there having been no more goods disposed of from the 1st of September 1730 to the last of August 1731 than a small sum of ƒ 167047:18:-, on which the net profit was ƒ 236502:12:8. While this must partly be attributed to the unfortunate condition of the times, and apparently also with regard to the vent of the spices will have been caused in large part by the orders regarding the increase of the coin species in Malabar, we wish to expect better success in the future, and particularly also that the servants will proceed with more attentiveness in superscribing and reweighing the packs. For that which is set down in that regard in Your Honor's letter of the 30th of September 1732 appears incomprehensible to us, namely that the packs received there with the ship Langerode differed so greatly in weight from those brought to Batavia with the Vliegend Hart, that those of the first-mentioned vessel for a great part came out less by up to 8, 10, 13, and 18 pounds than their superscription indicated, right contrary to the finding of the packs received at Batavia with the last-mentioned vessel, which all tipped the balance even by up to 10, 12, and 16 pounds. From Surat, 20 April 1736 could be aimed at, and principally in the letters written under dates of 15 November, 4 December of the past year, and 8 and 18 January of the current year. We sit here ourselves burdened with debts on the master's account, and are therefore unable in this moneyless time, against the civil interest of 5 percent per year, to raise more money than has already been secured to an amount of 136000 rupees; while various goods, such as sugar and copper, alongside spices, may not be sold except against the limited prices and advances, which we dare not take upon ourselves in order not to violate orders. Also, differences have again been found upon the reweighing of the bales, etc., received from the Broach office, although the Company's scales, balance, and weights are kept there. The renewal of Your Right Honourable worships' esteemed orders to continue therewith is strictly followed, and on this subject we cannot cite anything other than what was dutifully shown in previous years. But those from Ahmedabad have all given overweight; we have considered that the large difference, even up to 42 pounds, must be caused by the native weight, although such pieces, when inspected and made up, were found complete according to the packing slips. And since the balance, scales, and weights kept here at the office cannot be spared when the ships are being unloaded, the bales weighed in the tent, the work of the warehouse is underway, and the merchandise is delivered upon sale, we have taken the liberty to place a request for them in our requisition, in order to accommodate Ahmedabad therewith. The Sarkhej indigo has, on account of its excessive dearness at 35:—:— rupees per maund of 34½ lb, been rejected at the meeting of 2 March, just as previously, under date of 12 January current, that of Jambusar received from Broach was likewise rejected as being too sandy and of too low a value, being the maund of 36¼ lb. At Surat, pursuant to the Council's decision of 23 April of the past year, the Surat chintzes for the homeland were held back when the distribution of the orders was made; and then also the Sironj chintzes, likewise 7 pieces of butadars contracted for Batavia the year before and remained unfulfilled, of which latter the price is first determined upon inspection. But at the meeting of 26 June, it was commissioned to the broker for the said goods at 65 rupees the corge raw, or 4¾ rupees more than the year before for the first-mentioned sort, and the latter at 29½ rupees, or 2 7/8 in disadvantage, also increased due to the dearness of the cloths. At Cambay, the charges incurred upon the shipping of the return goods, according to the account of the residents Pecoock and Minuut received with their letter of 24 February, amounted to 2011 rupees or ƒ 3021:—:—, which were indeed passed by us at the meeting of 2 March, but alongside it was noted how, instead of the contracted ¾ percent, 1¼ percent—which, on an amount of 97308 1/8 rupees or ƒ 145962:—:—, which the goods actually cost without charges, amounts to fully 1 5/16 percent—was paid out to Governor Momin Khan to the amount of 1300 rupees under the name of nazarana, or voluntary offering, which would by no means be counted into the King's treasury. All this having been accommodated so far as any place can be given to fairness, we are nevertheless compelled, in response to the sharp letter of 24 February written from Ahmedabad, received as aforementioned, to make a rightful demonstration of treatment which we trust will be difficult for the writer thereof to answer. We do not doubt that Your Right Honourable worships, upon reviewing the papers for our discharge, will find that the non-remittance of the funds is by no means to be imputed to us. Having, as already alleged, fallen into debt ourselves for the Honourable Company, native navigation being closed by the Siddi's squadron, and entire commerce still standing still because neither transport nor money is to be had in the city, of which the said residents have successively been given notice, and we were immediately intent to do so whenever we obtained but the slightest opportunity. From Surat, 20 April 1736 was caused, according to the received report, because among other weapons lying with the native armorer for cleaning, one of the Europeans picked it up, whereupon it went off and unfortunately hit that Moor, whose wounded body was brought before the house of the fiscal by the blood relations, which immediately caused a large crowd of passersby to gather. The said officer appeared immediately at the lodge and reported this to the commander, who thereupon assigned him two commissioned members, together with the secretary of the honorable Court of Justice, to have the patient examined by the Chief Surgeon of this directie and to investigate the matter thoroughly, as well as to get hold of the perpetrator if possible. But before the said fiscal had come outside again, that Moor had given up the ghost. The Director meanwhile sent orders to keep all those who were outside in the Company's garden and shipyard together, the sailors inside their boats and launches, the military at their posts, and likewise those who lived in the lodge, with orders to the ship authorities to advise those of theirs who are in the city not to go outside their place of residence, as this is a matter of great consequence and was undoubtedly bound to be exploited by this grasping government, and to order the fiscal to leave the corpse and the bystanders in peace, all detailed at length in the resolution of 5 February, to which reference is respectfully made so as not to prolong this further, likewise stating how the officer as well as the relatives did their best to get the delinquent, without any effect or trace of who it was, although the latter informed the Director that the shot was fired, even though there was no powder in the pan, and by snapping the cock three or four times the gun discharged.
