From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 to your Honour: to kindly oblige me, your sincere friend, by favouring this our Consul with the very same favours and assistance as the other nations enjoy, both with regard to the customs duty and other prerogatives, as well as permitting him to fly the States flag at the Consular house, both upon the arrival of our ships and on all other occasions customary among the French and other Consuls. Extract from the letter sent by the Isfahan Residents to the Honourable Mr Carel Coenrad, Merchant and appointed Director of this Persian Directorship, together with the Council, dated 13 October 1735 and received per the couriers Apriam and Pedroes on the 6th of November following. The Bookkeeper Van Leypsig, having reviewed his own poor means and found that here, From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 he is even selling his clothes, in which he must at least appear among the people to uphold the Company's respect as much as possible, will not be able to keep going for three months longer to maintain the civil decency of his respective masters, without anyone being able to accuse him, as he believes, of having incurred any unnecessary expenses from here since the departure of the Merchant Schoon, other than those that could not well be avoided. Thus he finds himself currently obliged most obediently to request Your Honours kindly to support him if possible, so that the Company's honourable name may be maintained in these lands and he may not entirely succumb under the burden. For otherwise he will indeed be forced to cut off commerce with all people and to live solitary like a hermit until he is delivered from here by the exceeding goodness of Their Right Honours, which he believes will bring no small blemish to From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 the name of his masters, since it is not well possible, as is well known, to subsist on what the Company has granted to a head of this trading post, and he has nothing more of his own left to spend with which he could maintain the decency of his respected masters in all reasonableness for much longer, while up to now, or in 5 years' time, he has both incurred debts and spent of his own around 640 Tomans. However, in case your Honours cannot possibly resolve upon the one or the other, he shall then have to adapt himself as best he can to endure this place until the highly respected orders of their Right Honours concerning his humble person shall have arrived, nevertheless with the very humble request that he, through another poor manner of living which he will be compelled to commence, may by no means remain responsible for the slight regard that people will consequently come to show us, because such will touch the Honourable Company in its honour. The aforementioned deceased having thus caused a vacancy in the fiscals office (continued the Commander) and that not only because of the 4 pending cases of prisoners in kind, but also in order to prevent to the utmost of ones power the occurrences easily happening among the people of the shore and the ship, it indeed required that an actual fiscal were again elected. Therefore, the offer made by the junior merchant and provisional secretary Christoffel de Haan came into consideration, and after further ponderation that he was the closest thereto, and furthermore someone was very necessary to substitute for the aforementioned motives, it has thereupon been approved to elect the said provisional secretary as provisional fiscal as of now, and to take over by transfer with the prior knowledge of the Council what has been resting with this office during the illness of the deceased under the junior merchant and currently functioning warehouse master, Mr. Willem Meester, in shackles, locks, etcetera, in such a manner that the new provisional fiscal will also have to hand over from the secretarial large and small desk with what is annexed thereto to the junior merchant Johan Barkey, since he is now elected for similar reasons as provisional secretary, and the more so because in languages and customs customary among the Persians he could not as yet be employed in the wool trade with any peace of mind. Further Extract For which reasons then, in order to continue the new harvest according to bound duty with attentive consultation, its particular importance being pondered, as well as the state into which the entire secretarial office would decline even further upon a longer stay of the first clerk Simon Clement there, because there was no one by whom a single translation could indeed be made due to ignorance of the language alone, and also in the event of illness of a secretary the work in its entirety ought to be maintained by a competent person, thus, with regard to bringing the one as well as the other upon a good and tranquil footing and making progress, the bookkeeper Frans van Loon has come into consideration, since like the said Clement among the commissioners at the warehouses he has learned a little Persian and is also of good conduct, not without hope that with God's blessing he will give good satisfaction in that commission, arranged to the greatest benefit of the Honourable Company and the attainment of his own fortune. And therefore he is as of now elected as commissioner and successor of the said Clement on a similar footing according to his instructions to relieve and replace him in 15 to 20 days or after the severe cold shall have passed, with the further approval to have a horse and everything necessary for his voyage brought into readiness and provided for him in the interim. 177 Persia, dated 19 March 1736 From Mhemies Pasha and us regarding the matter of the flag still continues on the same footing, because His Highness has remained too adamant in his improper demands and we in our reasonable refusal of an excessively large acknowledgement fee. However, had he wished to be content with a moderate present of about 4 purses for himself and his principal servants, he would already have enjoyed that value and we the firman granting the license for the freedom of the flag mutually. Yet little is lost now because he, Mhemies Pasha, will have to exchange this government of his for that of Mosul or Ussein Pasha; which latter person would perhaps have paid little regard to the written order granted by the former, and according to all presumption, being dead poor, will show himself very willing to grant such a freedom to us for a decent reciprocal courtesy. The mentioned new Pasha's musallim, one Zeffwaga, has arrived in this place in recent days, and assumed the government in the name of his master, but with a very bad and From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 and utterly disadvantageous beginning, as the first assembly which he convened was mixed with such consternation and confusion and dissolved in such a manner that everyone practically had to retire as if in rebellion. Likewise, a few days thereafter, not only some of the principal merchants, but even the English consul, Mr. Marten Frerach, had to undergo the blatant affront of seeing their principal servants, such as interpreters, brokers, money changers, etc., taken from the streets and thrown into prison. From which, however, by using the precaution of keeping all of our people indoors, 179 From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 we have remained exempted. The said insult the lord consul took so vehemently to heart that he de facto formed the resolution to depart from here for Baghdad; in consequence of which he also had the flag of his residence struck the day before his departure, and in spite of the rulers, as well as the numerous entreaties of all other distinguished aghas and grandees as well as the principal merchants of this city, set out on the journey thither on the 4th of this month. He did so with the intention, as he himself attested to me upon taking a polite and friendly leave with serious protestations, that in case he were not satisfied in a complete and desired manner by Ussein Pasha, who is presently there, he would without doubt continue the journey further to Constantinople and before the Grand Vizier, to the end of obtaining revenge according to his demand, etc. This sudden enterprise has truly caused an uncommon confusion and hesitation among these new lord rulers and those who have had even the slightest hand in that harsh business, From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 and we do not even doubt that there are some among them who are beginning to fear rather strongly for the cord or the sword. Yet little would be lost by that, for if only two or three rogues were to be dusted off, we trust that those jackals of newly-baked incoming petty rulers would diminish their customary insolence somewhat; especially with regard to the Europeans, whom they would then humor a bit more and extort less, as we constantly, now by this one and then by that one who knows how to forge whatever false pretenses, must all too lamentably experience. Of this we also recently, upon the arrival of Mhemies Pasha, underwent an essential proof, by having willy-nilly to advance as a loan for that lord four purses and for his shahbandars one ditto, of which to this day not a single stuiver or penny 181 From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 has come in, but only some good promises. From Persia under date 19 March 1736 to set, or rather through mighty presents, or however he will best be able to manage to push him out; at least it appears to us that he, not a little through his creatures, has caused trouble under that poor work of the new regents, so that their actions might, the sooner the better, cause some bad effects and consequently harmful complaints. Nor is he in much of a hurry to decamp from here, perhaps in the hope of still keeping the post, which for our part we would like to see; for if another ravenous and money-hungry fellow comes to Bassoura, then what little remains of the trade, merchants, and townspeople will go out the gate, and we may likewise put out to sea, and in so doing this place will only be left with the bare name of Bassoura. 183 From Persia under date 19 March 1736 Assuming that His Excellency will have long since received intelligence regarding the war between the frequently mentioned Mhemies Pasja and the Arabs, as well as, after that date, the Persian naval expedition and intended invasion of this place, we shall not compose any unnecessary extension or detailed accounts thereof, but merely advise by a brief sketch that the said Pasja commenced the battle with the said Arabs like a lion, but came away from it and further kept as quiet as a sheep, considering that wild people put the dispatched militia etc. to such a rout and disgrace that barely a fifth of the whole returned, and that stripped bare, stripped of weapons, and only through mercifully granted quarter, leaving behind baggage, war ammunition, and artillery, and with the loss of the principal army commanders, among whom the Janissary Aga and the Pasja's Kaya or second-in-command returned.
