From Persia, dated 19 March 1736. advantages could come to result for the Company, but before that were brought into effect, I would gladly first wish to obtain the considerations of Your Right Honourable on this matter, in order to be able to combine this with that which has already come to my knowledge regarding it, so as then, after mature deliberation and meditation, finally to be able to take those measures which would be the best and most suitable to bring that project to a desired end, for the welfare of the commonweal. But since this projected establishment is entirely new, of which one has not even the slightest idea here, I would be of the opinion that Your Right Honourable would not do ill to send me, upon a secure occasion, some handsome fabrics and fine linens which you deem to be agreeable and to their taste, with the intention of presenting them to the grandees and ministers of the court, in order thereby to predispose and engage them to favour this commerce and establishment. These presents could serve in place of the expenditures that are necessary and indispensable here when soliciting at this court, regarding which Your Right Honourable may please to do as you shall judge best and most suitable. Extract from the copy of the missive written by His Excellency the Ambassador to the court of Constantinople, Cornelis Calkoen, dated 29 April 1735, to the ministers in Basra, and by the same sent hither and received on 10 November of the past year by a native vessel. And whereas my principal aim always extends to favouring our commerce and navigation, with the purpose of maintaining and increasing it as much as possible, I would judge it advisable that Your Honour send me a kind of report of the present state of commerce, both at Basra and at the other places where our nation is established or conducts trade, in order thereby to be in a better position to be of service to the same. I would also be of the opinion that it would not only be suitable, but even necessary, that Your Right Honourable should expand commerce From Persia, dated 19 March 1736. in these quarters of this empire, and to that end establish a trading post here in Constantinople, from which I imagine very considerable advantages could come to result for the Company. Extract from the missive written on 30 September of the past year, with an appendix of that date thereto, by the Honourable Karel Koenad, merchant and appointed director of this directorship, together with the council, to the residents at Basra, and sent by a native vessel. After the dispatch of our aforesaid last letter, Your Honours' letters of 25 May and 13 June thereafter, with their From Persia, dated 19 March 1736. books and writings conformable to the register, were received locally per the Royal George. However, that Your Honours, as it appears to us, flatter yourselves in the first-mentioned letter to have produced sufficient discharge concerning the long withholding of the writings so urgently needed by us (as seen in the copy of our last missive), is as little conforming to our opinion as it is justifiable, and also not in accordance with the expectations that were held of Your Honours. For we cannot as yet view Your Honours' actions otherwise than as if this were premeditated and carried out to act directly contrary to the ancient, beneficial, and strict orders, as well as those given by us successively and repeatedly. And therefore, having been adopted by Your Honours themselves as unsatisfactory, we may with good right (although with great reluctance) confirm ourselves therein until such time and while Your Honours, through satisfying reasons and more accurate observance in almost all your operations, shall have made us incline once again to more pleasant feelings regarding Your Honours. Wherefore we shall continue to expect a prompt compliance, without delay, in case Your Honour should not be inclined to receive and learn from us still more resentful measures than are being taken at present. Further Extract from just as above Having proceeded after that discussion to the comparisons also received to ascertain their general expenses and profits made from the year 173 3/4 against the preceding year or the year 173 2/3, and from which it was evident that the latest was higher by an amount of f 3121:3:-, but considering that the reasons given by Your Honour in that regard were weighed at the same time and seeing that those higher expenses could be accepted as inevitable, the one and the other have been passed, as also dealt with for the same reasons, and it turning out that their extraordinary expenses incurred in From Persia under date 19 March 1736. in 12 months, or from May of the past year to April of this year, amounted to ms 630 or f 267:13:-, besides the ordinary ditto incurred in the said period to ms 7666 or f 3258:1:- according to our calculation, and not according to that of Your Honour, since in your missive one month too little and in the said specifications f 8:10:- too much were found to have been stated, so that this handling has once again appeared to us completely negligent, considering that not only was plenty of time taken by Your Honour for this, but moreover the least amount of artful labor was required, yet indeed an accurate inspection and comparison, which could very easily have prevented such extreme carelessness with the trouble caused to us; Your Honour will also be able to observe the further instruction in that regard from another extract from the same estimate, and to which we refer, with a recommendation to demonstrate better attentiveness to us, so that we may not be forced to point out to Your Honour your duty in a more sensitive manner. Further From Persia under date 19 March 1736 Still Further Extract Concerning Your Honour's loaned money of ms 17250 or f 4781:5:— to the deputy Alie Beek and Shabandar Assem Aga, the aforementioned special consideration could find no place, for the reason that upon our examination of that transaction the result showed that the conditions entered into with the people were established altogether too lightly and thoughtlessly; for just consider for yourself what reliance Your Honour could have known or placed in that then-troubled condition (which in good times will continually appear more or less upon the arrival of a new ruler in the government) and the uncertainty of a ship consignment from here to your parts, so as to hazard a capital from the master's purse in a balance of the utmost difficulty, even if the loan made previously or in the year 1724 was only recovered again in the year 1731, yet being as well-founded as inevitable with the ministers then 71 From Persia under date 19 March 1736. residing there, what dissatisfaction and inconvenience has this not caused, nevertheless, to our Right Honourable, strictly respected, highly esteemed gentlemen, both in the Beloved Fatherland and Their Excellencies the High Indian Government at Batavia, notwithstanding the intervening care caused to the residents who finally obtained its restitution again; so that we, for yet other reasons to be seen in a still further extract from the frequently mentioned Resolution of 12 July, have charged this money loan made to Your Honour's account, and at the same time left it deferred to the sufficiently gracious decision of the aforementioned Their Right Honourable High Mightinesses at Batavia, whose highly wise orders Your Honour will now have to await together with us, as to how their reverend intention regarding Your Honour will lie and dictate to act in the subject case. Still Further Extract Concerning the desolate state into 73 From Persia under date 19 March 1736 which Nagha Moetsent has brought Your Honour and made to feel that everything was performed by order of the aforesaid well-mentioned Mr. Authority Dames Hey Lr with the cash proceeding from the sale to his creditors, to pay under such a pretext as has hitherto been regarded by us as frivolous and never justifiable, and whereby Your Honour has been forced to request of us an expedient to reward his merits; at first, upon Your Honour's communication in the subject case, we also gave some credit to those matters, but on account of the respect which the deceased held in view of the offices he occupied, secretly answered that matter to Your Honour on 19 April, and thereby already indicated a means to secure his person (though the goods and cash would be quite sufficient), as we have done with the Banians Wissendas and Matta; in this regard we shall inform Your Honour that the testimony of those people makes us greatly fear whether the persistence of the said Moetsent on account of

Jan Persia, under date of 19:' March 1736 concerning a contract entered into, and that the same is still continuing, is also not so much an untruth as are all of his sinister pretenses, considering that the said 2 Banyans they are still confined in the Lodge declare outright that they indeed entered into a certain agreement with that deceiver, but also annulled the same back in anno 1725, as he Moeltient himself must surely admit if he still possesses any good drops of blood; and for which reason we are now only waiting for Your Excellencies' elucidation, since we find ourselves well qualified to conduct an investigation and administer fair justice where such is required, but by no means to torment innocent people with imprisonment in such a terribly hot climate, and much less to execute on unfounded accusations; for if the latter were to happen, it would cry for vengeance unto God, and the Company would undoubtedly be greatly disparaged in its long-famed equity. Let them therefore turn their thoughts to the best of their ability to inform us at the earliest as to what we may believe or not. Further From Persia, under date of 19:' March 1736. Concerning now the matter of helping to relieve Your Excellencies to the best of our ability, we can devise nothing better than to most earnestly exhort Your Excellencies in the most cautious manner to ensure that Your Excellencies are not shortchanged by that deceiver of a single flus or stuijver, and especially and from now on, if such has not yet been effected pursuant to the contents of our accompanying copy of the 19th of April past to distrust him, not to make matters common knowledge if the same cannot be avoided, and that he must come to make his defense locally by occasion of this express vessel, even if Your Excellencies were to let him virtually bring the cash on board himself, and keep it there then under the pretense that he must make his accounting by our order with the 2 persons imprisoned here. Extract from a letter dated 28:' October 1735, written hither by the Bassourah residents to the Honorable Carel Koenad, Merchant and appointed Commander of this Persian Directorate, together with the Council, and received here on the 18th of November thereafter by a native vessel: We are thankfully indebted to Your Honors for the precaution used in arresting the 2 Banyans, Natta and Wissendas, as actual companions of the broker Moeltient, and we would have followed that example here with respect to the latter pursuant to Your Honors' highly respected order, were it not that a multitude of precarious reasons had restrained us therein, considering firstly the lack of despotic power we possess here to arrest someone who, due to a confluence of debts, must essentially be regarded as a hostage at the disposal of his creditors in this particular case; secondly, we would have run the risk of experiencing something 77 Persia, under date of 19:' March 1736 from something detrimental on the part of the rulers, as we, as well as all other inhabitants here, are indeed considered nothing other than co-dependents of their grotesque government, and on that account unauthorized to put into execution anything of an authoritative nature; besides that, we would undoubtedly have had to step in as sureties for the still open or outstanding debts to the amount of 1030 thomans, for the reason that we would thereby have claimed full disposal over the debtor and thus subordinated the creditors; and for the rest, we would have had to endure an unspeakable nuisance and continuous lamentation here in our residence with such a person and his entire family, who would also have had to be placed here as inseparable from him; so that, in consideration of all those cited inconveniences, we deemed it far best to make use, with greater peace of mind, of Your Honors' mitigating, generous, and no less equitable expressions, but rather if possible of his goods, because the From Persia, under date of 19:' March 1756 the one could be carried out quietly and the other not without a great scandal; and for that reason the necessary means have been arranged to secure everything in gold, silver, etc., that could be stripped from the body of the poor old wretch, as well as from his wife and children, and to keep the same sequestered in the Company's treasury for shipment, just as he, the broker, along with the cash from the sold goods and what was taken from him, valued approximately at 150 thomans, packed in a separate small box under the Company's and both of our seals, alongside his own seal, likewise marked and attended to as cited in the invoice in the margin, is now sent over to Your Honors via the small English ship Ormus-Marchand, Captain Matthias, at his urgent request and to our utmost satisfaction, as we could not only no longer employ that man with any peace of mind, but that he, being now dead-poor and having nothing left to consume, would ultimately become a burdensome encumbrance and cause of slander to us or the Honorable Company, considering he is an old Company servant, which also always

Wherefore we propose with great humility for the consideration of Your Honors whether we might spend the aforementioned, or if possible a smaller sum, in order to enjoy from now on, just like the English nation, that distinguished honor which is so exceptionally revered here, and by so doing increase the prestige of the Honorable Company among this native population, as well as to equalize our nation in general at least with others. For it is an evident truth that the aforementioned distinct sign confers such respect upon the English that we are thereby regarded almost as their dependents or subordinates by most Turks and Arabs, because the chief, Mr. French, is considered here under the title of Balios or Consul of all Europeans in general, without the required distinction being made between the nations individually, or each chief being distinguished as the resident of a different master, which truly in many remarkable instances causes us to be disregarded, both with respect to the government and the matters concerning trade. In view of the intercession of the Englishman with the government, practically everything that he claims is conceded to him, and regarding trade, precedence in everything is granted to him as the chief merchant of Bassoura, and this solely because it is assumed that he who flies the flag must also predominate over all others. Consequently, at present no caravanserai is dispatched to Aleppo, nor any galleys to Baghdad, except with the prior advice and consent of the Lord Balios or flag-bearer of the European nations. Speaking frankly, this causes us to suffer a heart-wrenching and indelible stain with respect to our Illustrious and high-mighty Lords and Masters, from which we cannot very easily be healed except through a desired license for the aforementioned expenditure. And for that reason we come to pray, as humbly as insistently, that Your Honors will please take to heart the respect and esteem of the Honorable Company through Your Honors' generous permission in the matter at hand, and allow us to enjoy the honor of the flag in the name of the Honorable Company. Indeed, the first signatory even testifies that if any ambition or thirst for honor might be encountered in this, its origin lies nowhere else than in a particular pride that he takes in the capacity of servant of the Honorable Dutch Company, for which he lives and hopes to die; and moreover, that for this reason this boldness will be considered excusable and taken in the best light. From Persia under date 19 March 1736 in order to obtain directly from there a firman for the Honorable Company, not only concerning the flag, but also regarding everything that generally concerned our prerogatives. Whether that now is because His Excellency, as well as the chiaush bashi, by Their Honors' esteemed letters to him, the pasha, have requested to equalize our nation in all cases with the French and cause us to enjoy the same privileges, is unknown to me. At least this I know to assure Your Excellency sincerely: that during my presence in loco, both through an affable intercourse with the most prominent rulers and inhabitants here, as well as through a multitude of noteworthy gifts, etc., I have pushed matters so far that our nation at this place is already preferred far above that of the French in rank, decency, and credit, and is considered in every respect; besides that they, in these quarters, are not estimated of that alloy as at Constantinople, since on their part at most only one ship falls to their share annually, 105 From Persia under date 19 March 1736 and in addition the consulate has already for a considerable time been demanded of the Carmelite fathers in loco, as outside of them nobody resides here permanently, except solely a so-called Doctor Dufresne, who spends his time here quite poorly and without any trade of importance. Regarding His Excellency's desire to be informed of matters concerning commerce, I can reply with two words in all reverence that the same at this place may well be called sad and bad, since the continuous troubles, both with the Arabs and Persians, have been the cause that here during an entire year, or practically since the entry of Ahmet Pasha, not the slightest trade has circulated, considering that no merchant, although being the possessor of some money, dares to expose himself to trade, out of fear of having his property taken away by force and violence in quite an extraordinary manner and, in doing so, being exposed to the utmost poverty, just as many a one has already had to undergo only too unpleasantly. For justice and equity seem currently banished from the minds and conquered by cunning and greed, and that with such enormity that in case this is not remedied shortly by some change of government, one will perhaps before long see this place abandoned by all merchants and prominent inhabitants, through which it still bears the name of trading city. And now, to satisfy His Excellency as exactly as possible according to my bounden duty in the desire for a detail or report regarding the trade of the Honorable Company in these regions, it will, in my humble opinion, not be unserviceable first to inform Your Excellency with all respect in what manner the Directorate of Persia with its subordinate stations is constituted, and how the correspondence, both inside and outside matters of trade, is mutually limited. Concerning which His Excellency may then please know that Gamron is the main station of the said Directorate, which under the government of Batavia is managed 107 From Persia under date 19 March 1736 by a director or commander, just as the well-mentioned Their High Right Excellencies please to find good and to gratify their ministers. At present and for a considerable time past, that directorate with its considerable appendages has been governed by a commander with his political council, to which this station as well as that of Spahan are always subject and accountable, neither of the two chiefs being able to undertake or execute anything without the special consent or order of the aforementioned main station; and they are, in addition, also required to make a distinct report of all their doings and transactions continuously and on all occasions, in order to be acquitted or condemned from there according to the exigency of matters for the approval of the High Indian Government. From all of which His Excellency will now very easily be able to deduce that I, on my part, on my own authority, am not able to dispose anything regarding His Excellency's proposition concerning a new establishment, or extension of the Company's trade even into the imperial residence city of Constantinople, but From Persia under date 19 March 1736 that I am only authorized to remit Your Excellency's favorable project at the first occasion to Gamron, which ministers will then previously wish to await the decision of the well-mentioned High Indian Government, and possibly even Their High Right Excellencies from the Fatherland, in this matter, so that in consequence thereof fully two years will run to an end before a predetermined resolution on this account can reach us. 109 From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 the side of Bagdad could be sent for lack of sufficient depth for our black ships, so that in case Your Honor's Company should at any time incline or resolve to establish a new factory at Constantinople, I cannot imagine that this would be practiced via this route, both because of the inconvenience, the danger, and the extraordinary expenses of the overland roads, and because trade could be transported from Europe to Turkey at once with much greater ease and security, besides the fact that I imagine, and by other private merchants, both Indian and other sought-after wares are annually sent in sufficient quantities for consumption among the Turks, and perhaps are not subject to so many tolls and other charges as they would be burdened with if sent from here, and consequently increased in price, not to mention that not only a generous dipping into the purse would have to take place for the prerogatives and liberties to be contracted, but furthermore the burden of the residents From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 with the appurtenances and dependents thereof would have to be borne by the Honorable Company, who then perhaps would no longer enjoy their profits and liberties than it would please this or that government. These are, Right Honorable, Valiant, Highly Esteemed Lord, the humble and unpretentious ideas which I imagine will not be found entirely objectionable; yet I very gladly hope that the same, through loftier and more experienced judgments than mine, may be frustrated to the advantage of the Honorable Company, provided that in time I may see my revered lords and masters reap their desired fruits in the most profitable manner from Your Excellency's wholesome proposals and good intention. Heartfelt regret that the same could not have turned out better nor higher, but that does not alter the fact that we, in two different comparisons between both our yields of the sold merchandise of the 2 consecutive accounting years 1723/4 and 1723/4, have clearly and also humbly shown, calculated per conto in general, that our higher-yielding and further profits obtained on the goods individually, in so far as we have turned over one and the same kind of wares there and here, still considerably came to exceed those of their Honors. That is one point, and as regards that presupposed danger to the Honorable Company, we testify with all humility to our painful regret at being suspected of something improper, but on the other hand also our well-founded cheerfulness that we have never so far forgotten ourselves nor done such wrong that the least favor could not yet excuse the same, unless the reasons for the suspicion or disadvantageous presupposition consisted in the fact that we, out of an obligatory prudence and care for the Honorable Company's interests and interests until today, and indeed mostly on account of our protracted waiting for a Company ship with goods, have delayed in sending the collected cash funds from the consecutively sold merchandise, which together with what is added make up quite a fine and considerable capital of f115872:7:8, and truly, according to our humble thoughts, are far too valuable to send away on a loose footing without positive orders from Gamron, in a dangerous time, and with untrustworthy vessels or insufficient overseers, and, in the unexpected event of loss or diminution, to make ourselves responsible for it. 119 From Persia, dated 14 March 1736 to this government entered into one and the same condition to liquidate upon the first forthcoming calculation of customs, and accepted it more out of necessity than out of willingness, and truly, as it seems to us (spoken with reverence, Right Honorable, Respected Sirs), we were not so very rash and thoughtless, considering that at the time of that loan we were by no means heedless of the daily arrival of a ship with goods, from whose customs duties those monies were to be collected back, just as everyone who advanced their money on loan alongside us on the same conditions has already recovered it, and solely we, owing to the absence of a ship, for the present still remain stuck with that burden. Wherefore we hope that this will not be imputed to us as the authors of that affair, and also that in time, by one means or another, we may yet finally attain our security, just as we shall employ everything to that end that From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 can possibly be conceived by us, and especially now that this Governor Mamies Pasja, for whose account and requirements the aforementioned monies were collected, is shortly to depart from here to Masul as Governor there due to the appointment of a new Governor named Hossein Passa, as the masalum or deputy of the said new Pasha made his entry in loco as early as the 28th of the past month of November and assumed the government; yet not without throwing this city and its inhabitants, and all the Europeans, Armenians, Jews, etc., into a distressing consternation, by making a demand in precisely the same manner as these related circumstances dictate, namely for the account of his said Pasha, who is still at Masel, to levy from the inhabitants here a considerable sum of 80000 kroesen at 4 ½ mamoodies a piece, which together amounts to 360000 mamoodies, 121 From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 or makes out ƒ 153000. To this end, immediately after taking possession, the new deputy made known his Pasha's absolute desire to all the principal grandees in meeting after meeting, demanded the said monies, and attempted to make the distribution in such a manner that everyone had to be assessed a certain portion according to their status or credit. Regarding this, they had advanced so far that everyone was given a note of their quota, under which the Europeans in general were assessed an assessment of 15000 kroesen; so that upon further distribution, as the same would have to be made among us collectively, the English Consul would have had to contribute an amount of 6000 Croesen or 27000 mamoodies, being ƒ 11475; and we one of 4000 kroesen or 18000 mamoodies, being ƒ 7650; and the remaining Europeans, such as private English and French merchants, together the remainder, or 5000 Croesen. From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 truth would have had to sink finally into a state of despondency through chagrin and despair, yet heaven be thanked for the granted strength through which we have still remained capable of directing our assigned affairs and obeying Your Honors' highly esteemed orders with human prudence, and after confession of our substantial committed errors, humbly imploring forgiveness for them, as is now happening for the second time, with respect to our long delay of last year's trade books and advisements from this place. Since Your Honors have not pleased to be satisfied with the reasons presented and the excuses begged by us via the English ship the Royal George regarding that delay, we pray most reverently that the reasons may be accepted as sufficient which we hereby still have to cite in amplification of the former: namely, that according to the discursive assertion of the English Captain Abraham Robbarts upon his last return from Surat, it was entirely at the disposal of the Turkish merchant transported thither, our well-known good friend Hadja Omar Chelebi, whether that ship the Carolina would sail to Gamron or not, but that the said Chelebi, during the voyage, being seized with the inclination first to go and visit the late Mr. Hey along with the present commanding officer Mr. Coenad in passing, the said Captain, out of pure complaisance, had the courtesy to make for the local roadstead and there, without any further or personal necessity, solely to oblige the repeatedly mentioned Hadja Omar, to linger for several days, without being able at his departure from here to give us positive assurance whether things would turn out in such a manner, or whether he would have touched at Bassidore merely to deliver the letters he carried; wherefore, on such a dubious prospect, we did not dare to risk sending our books and other humble accompanying writings, but did send a single private letter dedicated with much respect by the first signatory of this letter to the well-esteemed and Honorable Commanding Officer Mr. Koenad, wherein the uncertainty of the sailing to Gamron was likewise presented, we having otherwise been unable to avail ourselves of an earlier or secure opportunity unless one had been permitted to hire an express vessel for the dispatch of our said books and writings, which we do not know to be permitted to us without Your Honors' granted permission. From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 would very willingly have complied, as the same would have been sufficiently limited and responsibly executed by us, but it lapsed again because of that inserted condition regarding the broker's supervision, so that in all humility, in our latest letter dated 11 November last, dispatched by two couriers in original and now sent in copy, we have set down in somewhat greater detail that for all the cited reasons our waiting to send the funds still is and remains dependent either upon Your Honours' further positive orders or upon the departure of the previously mentioned three-masted Moorish vessel, or indeed upon the arrival of a Company ship for the very best security both for Your Honours and for us alike, which we, under correction, believe will appear far more expedient to Your Honours and likewise to everyone among our highly respected Lords and Rulers who may consider our prudent conduct in this matter, than that we, without the utmost circumspection, should allow such a considerable sum as is to be further specified hereafter to leave our hands. From Persia, dated 19 March 1736 may have been addressed by the said small vessel to Your Honours, and that we may soon be set completely at ease in this regard. Further extract, as above. Secondly, we consider it proper and dutiful also to answer Your Honours' pleasant letter dated 15 November of the last expired year, which was duly delivered to us with its enclosures by the French ship L'Union and Captain de Boisroland on the following 28 December. Pursuant to which, we first express our joy regarding the delivery of our humble letter of 11 October last, as we also hope that our successive missives, etc., dispatched thereafter via the broker Moetjient, our hired couriers, and the repeatedly mentioned Moorish small vessel, will likewise have shared in that fortune. We have derived uncommon pleasure, and we also flatter ourselves with the glory, that we have been so fortunate as to have our conduct in sending the Company's funds and effects square so far with Your Honours' opinion that we did not risk them by transporting them on a trankey, but rather on a capable three-masted ship, just as our well-founded motives and fitting reasons in the preceding matter have, as we hope, appeared entirely reasonable to Your Honours. Especially when, on top of that, reflection is made upon Your Honours' further expressions addressed to us in the letter dated 30 September in such an energetic, yet at the same time impermissible manner, particularly regarding the danger presupposed by Your Honours for the Noble Company, of which danger we now find not the slightest thing reiterated or elucidated in Your Honours' latest letter, and which, being especially agreeable to us, allows us to conclude from this that it was not so very great, or not sufficient enough for the affront of the interdiction inflicted upon us. Extract from the letter dated 19 February last, provided with an appendix of the 9th of this month, by the Honorable Mr. Carel Coenrad, Merchant and appointed Director of this Persian Directie, together with the Council, to the Residents at Bassoura, and sent forward per the English ship the Cara. You are hereby informed that all the same letters, enclosures, cash, and goods of 16 December past, sent per the ship Toewakel belonging to Sheik Rasjet at Bassadoor and not Tjelebie at Souratta, were received on 27 January last just as they were dispatched, and were taken into consideration in our Council of the 8th of this month, together with the replies delayed until now regarding the advices received from the same, as will appear among other things from an accompanying extract dated 18 November. However, the general reply is especially intended by the first-mentioned resolution, and moreover, in our last dispatched letters of 15 November and 27 December of the past year sent by French and English shipping opportunities, after the date of the ultimate of the aforementioned month of December, your two express couriers were also sent back with a covering letter together with a register of the papers previously sent, not doubting that both will have long since arrived. Further Extract. Since time by no means permits us to act at length in this matter at present, both because of its brevity and because we are still busy drafting the aforementioned resolution of the 8th of this month in order that you may be elucidated in due form, what has been found good and necessary regarding your residency is in full hope of thereby having finished work before the departure of this, and the expectation that you will at least take that decision to heart to the best of your ability and knowledge. But whether you really needed to choose such a pirate ship—about which there has already been trouble over there—to risk such a considerable capital, and that under pretext toward us regarding the danger, you will never be able to demonstrate from our orders, as you will be able to see from an accompanying extract. But however that may be, we have reason to thank God that through the Honorable ship Stadwijk the rest of the pirates' booty was happily escaped and brought into safety for the government.
