After concluding high compliments of honor: Your Highness’s written two firmans /: decrees issued the 8th of September and 1st of October last past :/ have greatly exalted and gladdened Your Highness’s humble servant in unfortunate times, so that it could not be neglected to have the cannon bear witness to it. Concerning that which Your Highness was pleased to order about the preparing of ships and sloops, and to consult with His Excellency Elmomaleek and Captain Sawahel Mhamet Taggie, and to be of assistance, I hope that from the enclosed copy of what I have written to His Excellency, Your Highness’s satisfaction will increase. Subsequently, from Chiraas, Your Highness’s exalted plenipotentiary, His Excellency Miersa Takkie, wrote concerning that matter to the Shahbandar Miersa Mhamet, and the Company’s assistance was also requested by him. Thus, for the true maintenance of the tender and steadfast friendship with this Crown and my mighty superiors, so far as was indeed useful to me, I have held myself ready for Your Highness’s service, in such manner as the said Shahbandar will undoubtedly demonstrate, either in person or in writing. Since, by God’s grace and the great good fortune of Your Highness and the pure services of the Company’s servants, Their Excellencies Seffie Chanbeek and Maid Laid Beek, God be praised, have returned here in good health with all their goods, none excepted, I take the uncommon liberty very humbly to congratulate Your Highness therewith, with the heartfelt wish that from Their Excellencies’ annexed own petition, Your Highness’s satisfaction and favor toward me may increase. That was very good (those gentlemen gave to understand), and then no one would be disturbed, and our petition would also be entrusted to a fine man; which certainly concerned the intended purpose regarding the said plenipotentiary, and of which matters clear mention was made in the dispatched Isfahan letter of the 16th of this month, in the hope that fortune will be pleased to favor the trade so that His Highness will order a favorable fiat to be written thereon, or at least that matters will proceed more easily and calmly with the Honorable Company and its servants in the future, and also to act as has now been experienced by us during his assumed rule in this empire. Whereupon it was put to the question what would now best be done, whether one should melt down the ornaments of gold to 688¾ ducats and those of silver to 695½ matticaels, or send them as they are to Batavia, or leave them here resting under their seals, until an answer arrives to our humble advices recently dispatched per Valkenisse, and on which, all matters having been duly considered, the Council judged it most expedient as well as justifiable to choose the last-mentioned proposal, and in the interim to record the same with its value according to each's nature in the trade books and to take it in to the benefit of that office, as well as with taken counsel.

Persia under date 19 March 1736. Concerning that which was remitted in judicio at this table regarding freight money stipulated by him for his family, and already paid by the Company's brokers Otchimsjent and Jsjourdas on 27 November last, it shall serve to be done to his prejudice, in order to maintain the one and the other on a regulated footing until further disposition may be made in this regard. Still further extract as above. Regarding their submitted demand for merchandise in the repeatedly mentioned letter of 28 October last, it was approved to suspend until a ship arrives that can go thither, because Stadwyk is too large, with the intention then to provide that residency from our stock and whatever might additionally be brought therewith, unless in the interim another advance were made by the Persian at the place, in which case we, as we hope was done recently with Noordwykerhoud, shall once again dutifully acquit ourselves in a responsible manner, and in future not guide ourselves by the residents' heated desires to have a ship with merchandise without considering whether something impossible, such as in the absence of a suitable charter and impracticable against our better knowledge, could happen or not; and concerning their challenged representations in that regard to the Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed, our noble lords and masters in the Fatherland, with their further proposals, such as to trade the merchandise at 1, 2, to 3 months, or to be permitted to send the same to Bagdaad and Aleppo, and finally how to proceed now with the obtained freedom to let a flag fly; all their received letters from 22 August to 16 December inclusive, together with ours of 30 September, 15 November, 27 and 31 December of the past year, together with the Fatherland writings sent by the residents and papers exchanged with His Excellency the Lord Calcoen, were maturely considered and confronted in the session in order to deliberate together what had to be replied to those servants on the one and the other; thus, regarding this stain rubbed upon us in their ready-lying outgoing Fatherland writing of 16 December, it was observed with great astonishment how those servants did not shrink from scribbling down therein, expressly sounding as irreverent as untrue, the one hoping we had acted somewhat more cautiously regarding this than that we, according to this highly honored Gamron letter, but at the same time with positive orders, would have requisitioned the same on an open native vessel under reliable confidence in a dangerous time; and whereas those writings will undoubtedly already have arrived, ergo irrevocable for the present, it shall, with preservation of our right and its maintenance, merely be pointed out here how unfounded their pen has soiled the paper and us, because while writing our letters of 30 September, which surely with Europeans, among whom the currently serving provost, at that time quartermaster Lilpositive, had been designated, and would not have departed open as above, when through a private advice of 22 August on 15 September or during the work was brought up with truth, and thereby caused at once

From Persia, dated 19 March 1736. An appendix brought by the bearer of that letter, which was already prepared, concerning our missive on those enclosures without the consent of the quartermaster's name etc., and principally because in their report it was positively stated that in short they would send their cash and everything held in the treasury with the broker, and whereupon it was judged at the time that our positive prohibition would come too late anyway, and therefore it would also be unnecessary to dispatch a separate vessel to collect the specie, provided it was already on its way according to the tenor of that letter, as had been presupposed; the council therefore presuming and judging that it was wholly unbefitting them to forge such frivolous protests against us in general. Further Extract. It having furthermore been resolved to refer them anew to our letters written after date, of 19 November and 27 December, since by us jointly for their best From Persia, dated 19 March 1736. best in the subject case, and our retraction regarding the interdiction on the grounds of the promise made in their last received writings, we still feel that they will now indeed regret their mistake, which was put into effect too prematurely and too hastily, while for our part, according to the nature of each character and the circumstance of time, we have hitherto applied the obligatory care in issuing the orders, which we believe, as we also hope, will be approved by the Right Honourable Lords at Batavia. It being forbidden in the highly valued copy of the Batavian writings lying there to negotiate from time to time, it was judged proper to refer them thereto, and consequently resolved not to grant their request in that regard, and still less to allow a draft proposal to follow in order to send the merchandise now to Bagdaad and then again to Alippo, From Persia, dated 19 March 1736. as the English consul etc. does, since by consideration of those letters on that point, indicated by the residents themselves, the pasha, upon opening his eyes, will certainly prevent it; wherefore that inquiry is truly unfounded and was judged by the council to merit no further reply than this, that they must no longer plague their brains with the flighty notions of others, lest they lose the right track of the Company's ancient and certainly the best method. Further Extract.
