From Souratta, dated 20th April 1736. of the 6th preceding, and consequently deferred answering it. Thus we proceed to do so hereby, noting that the incident between the Casbatties or natives there in the place and the Moendias appeared to us as a matter that would have resulted in further detrimental consequences had not the fousdhaer promised that he would make the latter vacate the city after the period of three days, as has undoubtedly taken place, and approved by us. The monthly account of May amounting to 178 2/2 rd:s, alongside the specification of the unavoidable repairs made against the rainy season to the amount of 136 8/32 rop:s, among which the securing of the cracked main beam by placing a prop beneath it is considered well done, until such time as they shall have obtained a similar piece of timber in order to employ it in the proper season; as we hereby agree to this and grant authority to provide those regents with the ordinary annual gift for the preservation of their friendship. In the meantime, we trust that the recently remitted bill of exchange for 1000 ropias will be satisfied on the due date, and remain herewith with our kind regards, 1151. Brootchia By and to the same as before Good friends, We find nothing of importance to respond to your letters of the 19th and 23rd of the last-passed month, other than that we were pleased to learn that the 25000 roap:s remitted in two installments were paid by the money changers on the ordinary due date; having also seen the distribution or advance provisioning of 24000 to the suppliers, wishing to hope that, although the Moerdias have for the most part crept back into the city and some feared worse consequences, they will be able and permitted to proceed in their work with tranquility. However, they must keep a watchful eye to prevent unexpected damage, From Souratta, dated 20th April 1736. damage and inconveniences. Meanwhile, enclosed herewith is an original Parivanna or written order on Mallaer Pandet, granted by his general Damagie, regarding what we might have to execute in Dorodera; and whereas Brootchia, for what the Sewas draws from the revenues, falls under said Dandel, they can show that document to the servants of that regent at Casti and subsequently send it thither with a covering letter in our name. The disbursement upon granted authorization for the annual gifts to the amount of f 601:17:8 has been passed here in council as unavoidable, as well as the ordinary 100 ropijen, along with three cases of distilled waters that are given away in bottles from time to time, as these are matters that could by no means be avoided. Furthermore, the expenditures of June up to 193 1/32 rop:s were approved, and having seen what they have already received, with the request to be assisted for the following up to an amount of 25000 ropias, trusting that the work at the beginning of this month would be of greater certainty, which we hope for, and further hold as communicated all the other reported matters. In the meantime, there are sent herewith 5 bills of exchange amounting to 10000 rop:s, negotiated at a loss of two per C=to, so that what was requested in the letter of primo July, except for a remaining balance of 5000 rap:s, has now been satisfied. We now trust they will be able to manage with this for August, pro rata to the delivery of the linens, since remaining too far in advance is not prudently done, and the present times are more precarious than in peaceful days. We note, however, that one cannot be too cautious against all unforeseen accidents, just as you yourself mention could have happened through the illness of that city's foujdar, Abdullabeek, who had suffered heavily from the gravel, and has been restored again through the blessing of the Lord upon the medicines administered by the second surgeon stationed there. Brootchia By and to the same as before Good friends, It has pleased us to learn from your letter of the 6th current sent the following day, how together with our letter of the 28th of the past month, the 3 bills of exchange up to 8000 rop:s have not only been delivered; but also accepted by the holders to be paid on the due date, as the distribution of the former 7000 has shown; From Souratta under date 20th of April 1736. as well as what they have collected again and therefore readily willing to believe that the above cited amount of 8000 rop: is to be issued at the earliest, we have enclosed herewith a further relief of rupias 10000, which are remitted by 4 bills of exchange, and have been negotiated at a loss of 2 per cent; the monthly account of Sept: amounting to 169 3/4, has been approved by us, as well as rupias 26 for incurred expenses in greeting the Sewas chief Kandoe, who had newly arrived there; with authorization to present the broker Gordendas with the customary pamerij on the upcoming pagan Divali or New Year feast, and although there are no communications worthy of being reported to us, they nevertheless ought to inquire exactly about the movements of the Sewas, principally regarding the goods that are being attended to at the outer places, as here everything is not quiet under the Moorish government. The son of Mhamet Alie was attacked or carried off just outside the outer town walls; it is also rumored that the Mandu raja Dajjasing, reinforced with troops of Badjerauw, is daily on the verge of invading the district of Damagie, and upon obtaining 1161. The content of your letters of the 22nd and 29th of the past month has been received by us, upon the receipt of the original and duplicate letters, together with the request for a further relief of 25 to 30000 rop: to remit this amount all at once we find the present constitution of the times not sufficiently secure, wherefore we first remit an amount of rop:s 8000 in two bills of exchange, while eagerly looking forward to what packs and bales they have already brought into the warehouse, of the sorts that require no clearing, namely the cotton yarn and goods of the kushedars consisting of coseroats, niquanias and bhernis, which previously were already partially embarked even under the ultimo of August, or collected with the Company's small vessels; the presentation of a pamerij to the Company's broker Gordendas on the pagan Divali feast is in accordance with order, and the felicitation paid to the faujdar concerning the long-awaited elephant from the lord Nizam-ul-Mulk, which was finally said to have approached to within three kos, is unavoidable, wherefore carrying this out with the customary nazar and expenses is agreed to by us; the latter set of trade books having been handed over to the honorable chief administrator for recalculation and resumption, who found the same without notable errors; we remain herewith with our cordial greetings /underwritten/ your good friends, /signed/ P: L: Phoonsen, P: Vos, S: van Erp; W: E. d. From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 Saturday the 7 January 1736 one was informed that the son of the heathen princess Umabai named Baburao Sawai had approached the fortress of the Maratha General Damaji with a good party of warriors in order to obtain satisfaction for the incomplete payment of the revenues which the said generalissimo, instead of delivering them, as being subject to her tribute, had now for several years hidden in his treasury; and he has full orders along with this, in case of unwillingness, to compel him thereto with the sword or else to plunder the surrounding cloth villages and hamlets and set them on fire in order to obtain such revenge. For this reason, there is now again fear of the descent of those birds of prey, who for the present will not only make the roads unsafe but also seize the harvested grains of the poor peasants. What is true of this, or what will come of it, time, the revealer of all things, must disclose. Extract from the Surat daily register of the year 1736. Monday 1219. From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 Monday Thursday the 9 ditto word was received that the bailiff and burghers of the surrounding villages had written to the Governor, the lord Tegbakt Khan, requesting that, upon the approach of the Maratha peoples, they might be admitted into the city with bag and baggage, as they were strongly fearful that the dispute between the General Damaji and the son of the princess Umabai would for the present not be decided, which the city governor granted them and shortly thereafter dispatched a letter of safe-conduct. The 8 March it was learned that the European vessel belonging to the English Company was captured by the notorious pirate Kanhoji Angre not far from the fortress of Bombay and taken as a prize to their robber's nest, owing to the bad conduct of the captain, who already early on or at the beginning of the voyage withheld the competent rations from the lower crewmen and cast the complaints of those mates to the wind, which drove them already at the latitude of the Cape of Good Hope to desperation, so far as to show during any hostile encounters that they would rather sit captured in the hands of the barbarians than daily do without the food, etc., provided for sustenance of life. Consequently, it is very easy to deduce what the real motives were regarding this case, notwithstanding that a certain passenger, at the time of the approach of the pirate vessels, offered to take command, as the mob, so it is said, even asked the enemy to approach; and upon their refusal to defend according to oath and duty, he intended to shoot down the first refuser with a pistol, so as to create a deterrent to spur on the others, but was restrained from doing so by the chief pilot as a matter or affair incumbent upon the lawful commanders, but on the contrary let it lie idle, for according to the description the said vessel 1221. From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 was mounted with 36 pieces of cannon and fully 200,000 guilders in ingredients for lading for Bombay, besides powder and round shot belonging thereto according to practice. Yet it is nevertheless astonishing that a ship with 140 European able-bodied souls was captured, so to speak, without a blow or shot, along with three galivats. The summary of the cargo is estimated by rough calculation at ƒ500,000. It is rightly assumed by many that the said pirates, through this victory achieved, will become singularly insolent and not only take away the native ships, but also openly dare to attack the Company's keels sailing to and from the Persian Gulf, and likewise the same difficulties are to be expected between here and Mocha. Monday the 19 ditto news was obtained that the troops of the princess Umabai From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 under the command of her son General Baburao Sawai had approached to within 2 kos of this city, and even the poor refugees were pursued and robbed to shortly beneath the walls; as also that the head regent, learning of this, had sent out his bakhshi or muster master with a good party of warriors to drive those peoples away, and both parties, shortly after the appearance of that captain, became heavily engaged in action against each other; indeed, several were even killed and wounded. Tuesday the 27 ditto we came to learn that a desai or magistrate of this place by the name of Banalidas had presented a petition to the Governor, the lord Tegbakt Khan, in which he made it known that the inhabitants were now very much alarmed both about the Marathas who are permitted within and those who were ravaging outside the wall on behalf of the princess Umabai, 1223. From Surat under date 20 April 1736: pleased to grant no passes to the native vessels; to the end that the merchants might thereby be spurred on to demonstrate their already shown affection for the common good, of which upon return verbal assurance was brought, and one thing and another was found to have such desired success that the two prisoners, after the broker was summoned by the governor, were released and sent toward evening to the director, with the customary compliment that as ruler of the city he had been compelled on a point concerning religion to make these moves, in order not to bring the rabble down upon his neck.
