The troops under the widow of Ommabaij, patroness of General Piloe, are indeed around Surat, but nevertheless have not crossed the Broach river; whereas, on the contrary, they would have had enough time to have the goods brought into Cambay. Three days are required, but it has in its time even happened in two, when it was brought thither from your side by the Secunde Vos, and from here the present Director with the Fiscal Ian van der Upwich, late souls, were sent to collect them. A small quarrel having first arisen between the citizens, Kasbatis, and inhabitants of this city, called Mundas, the same has erupted so far that coming to blows, 5 to 6 dead and several wounded on both sides have resulted therefrom, after which a truce was made for three days, wherein it was agreed that the last-mentioned or the Mundas shall vacate the city after the expiration of that time, but whether this will be of success, time will reveal. And although the fault is for the most part to be ascribed to the aforementioned city governor, with his avaricious and violent household, yet through the continuous running back and forth of the Setts to the governor and the head of the ganims, the parties were pacified and encouraged to return to their former work, with promises that if anyone were troubled again, they would be upheld by the two chief regents and satisfaction would be given them; which time will tell, though it seems it will bring little peace of mind to the common man. According to the rumors, one hears that the well-known Ummabai is about to take up arms against Damaji on account of some displeasure, but what it is, is not yet properly known here; which around this place causes no small amount of fear, and for that reason the Desai of Hansot and the Pandits of Ankleshwar have already requested permission to be allowed to retire inside Broach. Some people also flee daily from the last-named village, so finding this to be true, many obstacles are anticipated from it; yet we hope and wish that the goodness of Heaven will preserve the Honorable Company from damage and all troubles.
