From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 received your respected letters of the 3rd and 5th preceding; meanwhile the patolas have been, by the gentiles Birsboekendas, Wenmalidas and Girderdas for the Company's Surat broker Roerderam upon the respected Indian demand of last year, with our authorization recommended for care and brought over to Cambait by the dehoraij of the said Roederam, received by us, and it did not appear unpleasantly to us that they finally undertook their journey in the Lord's name, and how besides the escorts already added by the Nabab Mommchan, the said Nabab has also taken to the road contrary to expectation, so that we may trust they will not only have appeared more safely in Amed-abaad, but will also profit all the more from the verbal promises and written pledges which the said lord has made and delivered regarding the masters' interests, in which regard trusting in the gentlemen's assistance; and holding as communicated From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 holding the report concerning the letters which the often-mentioned Nabab is said to have received regarding the election of the lord Gasndieachan as governor of Amed-abaad; this being true, it will, it is hoped, be no bad change, yet not unserviceable, so long as the previous one still remains in the administration there, to indulge him in a reasonable manner and keep him in hand without yet having to foster the friendship with reasonable gifts and presents, whatever must inevitably be arranged, since issuing positive orders concerning this is not well possible, and sincere conduct in this matter is expected from them; also approved by us is the nazar at taking leave of the Nabab, amounting to one gold and five silver rupees, besides 20 others delivered to the servants; the extract demands have already been sent to them at Cambait, and the gentile Mitta Mettha written to, to send the packet of papers securely to them, and in order 937. Amed-Abaad To the same as before Good Friends We live in expectation that our letters of the 6th and 10th instant will already have been delivered to you, since From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 they were sent in duplicate; since then we have received your further letter of the 10th from Peetlaat; thereupon it was pleasant to us to learn of your arrival at that place in company of the Nabab Mominchan, though it had been hoped that this lord would have continued his journey to Amed-abaad, even though his departure from Cambait was unexpected by you according to the noted P.S. on your missive of the 25th preceding; thus it is nevertheless a wished-for matter that the said lord has undertaken to clear the road for them against the hindrance of the chauth collector of the Sewas, to have them brought safely to the destined place, as his Excellency's brother was about to go up thither; it is nothing unusual in these countries that the chiefs who hold the administration and are far from their masters constantly seek to take as much as they can get, for which they spare no trouble and make a great 939. From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 great fuss; but it is indeed not unknown to the Honourable Pecock what respect the Sewa people have for their generals; gladly would we have complained directly to their field commander Damagie about the chauth collector of Cambait, Baagje Sandet, but to accuse such prominent officials immediately, without any material matters having essentially occurred yet, we have deemed ill-advised, the more so as we relied on the instructions given along regarding the authorization granted to them, so that on this subject we have nothing else to order: yet for their information it is communicated that the desai Roedertje, having to celebrate the wedding feast of one of his family at Oeclisser, having invited the Director as well as other prominent persons in writing, his Honour on this occasion, to express gratitude while making excuses, communicated to him that From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 that notwithstanding the strong written passport of the said General, our servants having arrived at Peetlaat were somewhat detained in their further journey upward, yet lived in expectation that this would cause no further hindrance; we are, according to our opinion, so well known to the Sewas that they are fully aware that nothing else is aimed at than to carry on trade, if such may turn to advantage; and while they know that their revenues increase so much the better through commerce, we will expect that no hindrance will be caused herein, because the upright conduct of our people is not unknown to them, so that this is aimed at and by the Lord's mercy nothing but good is to be expected; relying hereon we remain with our affectionate greeting, underneath was written: Your Honour's good friends, was signed: P. Good Friends Their duplicate letter of the 24th May was received by us just as the original was already answered, under date of the 31st thereafter, with which was also received the projected gift in compensation for the horse and dress of honour obtained, amounting to the value of f 752: 3:—: which they also subsequently delivered, and we, considering the necessity thereof, have granted in council the requested qualification for booking, of which we give them notice hereby, but it is trusted that in calculating the cost of those goods they will not have thought of the transport charges From Surat dated 20th April Anno 1736: and have only made known the value according to the invoice; this being so, a further improved one will be expected, also of what was gifted at Cambay, since it is an order of their High Excellencies to make the same known, as well as the quantity, by resolution and letters, it being pleasing to us that the bills of exchange sent for the amount of 2000 ropias to be paid in Cambay have been accepted, which will undoubtedly be properly executed; and since we have already qualified them (if they were able) to draw upon us, we hope they will have proceeded thereto, however, in case this had no success, we send provisionally in four bills of exchange 5000 ropias so as not to risk the required amount all at once; the letter written by the Bhandari to the Director and sent to us by them has been answered, and goes enclosed in this to them, to be personally delivered, the copies of both lie herewith for their inspection, and we trust that the master will already be sailed from Cambay 951. From Surat under date 26 April 1736 21st 22nd with an appendix of that date, item 25 and 27 along with the addition of the 29th of the recently passed month, as well as the 2nd and 4th of this month directed here; concerning all of which the necessary decisions have already been taken in council, when subsequently having received the later letter of the 9th current, the safe arrival of the returns under supervision of the surgeon Matthijs Swemmelaer with the broker Birsboekendas has appeared to us from the writing of the first-named, dated 30 January, just as had already been sent to collect them the Company's small vessel De Speelman and the horry of the broker Boederam with the overseer of the equipment goods Wyeand Meurs, and with the first-named vessel transport was granted to the provisional secunde Minuit; the letters of both servants lie in copy alongside this, although having no doubt but that they will have delivered the drafts thereof upon their arrival at Amed-abaad to the Honorable Pecock with the answer applied thereto; they were about to undertake the journey up from Combait, but it is wondrous that, notwithstanding the shipping of the returns gives notice of how they were hindered in the fulfillment of their objective due to not reaching the agreement, we do not know that new contracts need to be made, while the one concluded by the Honorable Pecock and the late secunde Satink was firmly assumed by us to have been the basis upon which the work would have proceeded, and therefore expecting that the chief in those interests will spare no effort nor zeal to maintain the granted letter of assurance, it being also one of the principal pressing reasons for the re-establishment of the Amad-Abaad trading post, because truly the returns in themselves already come to cost dear enough to bear larger burdens, yes, what shall we say regarding the alleged non-complete fulfillment of the demands, this one suddenly seems to attribute to the lack of money, but if His Honor were to read over more closely his own successive letters sent to us, they rightly reveal how through the cruelties of the regents the principal inhabitants and laborers have retired from Amed-Abaad: one may well grant that our people were left free from this unheard-of treatment, but on the other hand vigilance is still necessary; this alongside the scarcity of money have caused the collection made at its time not to have effected the remittance, and to acquire cash at a fixed interest of 5 percent per year is thus not feasible, and to write off at present the merchandise in some varieties for the prefigured prices as well as percent is impossible, and Surat becomes more and more exhausted; the native merchants have the fire set too close to their feet, greed takes the upper hand daily, while the Sidis appearing in the roadstead have again seized the Moorish ships, far against the hope and expectation of surrendering the previous ones, and we also have no firm assurance of complete satisfaction regarding what could not be procured from there, since the contracting thereof had first to take place here at the main trading post when the inability from there was understood: the packs etc. received have been reweighed by the fiscal and commissioners, the difference was found to be too large, but since the goods are to be inspected according to custom, on that occasion some of them will be opened and the pieces recounted to prevent all frauds, it being possible that the native weights have caused such, so that in our demand to be made to Their High Excellencies at Batavia we shall request a set, so that they can proceed more comfortably and we may take our decision with more fundamental reasons. How Cassiets or letter-carriers often do not fulfill their accepted contracts is well known, which even happens in quieter times; the only means of redress has been practiced, of withholding the remaining wage from such persons and reprimanding the mindas or chiefs; this occurring more frequently, one can dismiss those who bring in these slow runners, in order to be better served through the appointment of others. The increase in the pretension of the servants who have the administration in the toll as well as other dues has been noted by us, yes even up to 150, 120, 100 rupees and so forth, also on the cotton up to 40 upon dispatch, and it has been seen with satisfaction that the Honorable Pecock had addressed himself to the deputy Rettingsing on that subject; once and more times we have written from here not to reach too deeply into the master's purse, nevertheless we are inclined to the request of the chief made by letter of the 9th current to be allowed to come down with the latest returns as far as Cambait, to accompany the same to us upon collection and to bring along his family left behind, whereby His Honor gets the opportunity in person equitably to urge or put forward the contract made previously with the Cambait Governor Moninchan, yet not to undertake such before and until he has restful assurance that during his absence from Amed-abaad the other Netherlandish servants will remain unmolested.

From Surat, dated 20 April 1736 Being apprehended, entirely contrary to the compliment given to the Bandari or governor by letter of 15 August, and the hope entertained by us that without any other view the master's business will be completed, we have contributed our share toward this to the best of our ability, and we shall only await the agreed departure of the chief Pecock on such terms as were granted from here on the 14th of the aforementioned month of February; meanwhile, towards the spring tide of the forthcoming new moon, the necessary vessels will be dispatched to collect the goods being brought to Cambait, and you are hereby ordered to inform us speedily what quantity they may have ready for shipment. In the latest reply, the letter of 13 January was overlooked, yet no matters of importance were contained therein other than the approval for booking the account for the manufactured palanquin, silk flag with the Company's coat of arms, and horse harness amounting to rupees 58 3/16; item, From Surat, dated 20 April 1736 item, the monthly account of December amounting to 298 3/64, as well as the indication of the samples of indigo sent forward because of the excessive price, which they will not have acceded to without authorization and of which no further mention is made in the letters, which is now done. Concerning the entry of the aforementioned account expenses, although unavoidable, it has reduced the master's cash treasury, and if drawn together with the previous ones, they would constitute a considerable amount. By our letter of the 2nd prior, the positive order for dispatch was sufficiently given, and repeated in the further ones of the 8th and 10th.
