The holders thereof have been shown the same, in order to pay on the due date, which they have accepted. By this, and the previous consignment of Rupees 6000: —, I am then for the present enabled to let the work take its course again as before: with the wish that the Lord's blessing From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 following that blessing, will shortly be capable of doing as is known to Your Honors, the raw linens must be manufactured and only then sent again for washing, bleaching, and dyeing, also printing, so that things here are not fashioned as if one takes them from the loom directly into the bale; which being considered, I hope that Your Honors will be satisfied therewith. From Surat, dated 20 April 1736 Commerodienchan, where he feared it might recur and for that reason strengthened himself; it is also maintained that the proclaimed Grand Chancellor of the Empire, Nesaam Ulmolk, will march in person to Asmeer, and has already arrived at Beramnoer, and from there up to Dillij his postilions are said to have been stationed along the road so that, through relaying of letters day by day, intelligence of affairs may be obtained. The subahships of Cabul and Casmier have been demanded by the monarch for the omrah Sirbolintchan, likewise Assimeer for Chan Baduroedjeen Asimoellachan, Allabaas Bangesang, and Tetta for Miewatie Dienchan, but the administration of Amed-abaadt still remains with the prince Abhessing, although it is said he himself makes request for his dismissal, yet cannot obtain it; which, Right Honorable sirs, is also in my humble opinion the most plausible, if one considers the decline of this once so flourishing and everywhere renowned city, with its truly now poor and exhausted inhabitants; wherein there is currently nothing to be gained for whoever might come down, and in addition he will still be forced to maintain a mighty army against the Maratha peoples, if he wishes to compel them to a treaty of peace to surrender half of the surrounding territories, to which they, according to natural reason, out of their own motives will not incline; so that truly, Right Honorable sirs, taking from the relation of matters, the change of this harmful government is still far to seek. These Maratha commanders are said, joined with the heathen princes Sessing Sawaij and Abhessing, to be coming down toward Bahewa Peara Ghat, lying on the Broach river, in order to prevent the crossing of the troops of all other Maratha generals; whatever the truth of this may be, I leave to time for discovery, yet I could not omit to give Your Right Honors the necessary intelligence of this as a matter of note, as well as to say in continuation that Commander Rancoedje is currently encamped with his army 30 koss from here before the fortress of Emmetnager, whereby I have had as yet no opportunity for the presentation of the parwanas; nevertheless, these, with those already granted by the said Rancoedje, will be fully able to make the guards along the way obey, so as to let the same pass unmolested. On the 14th preceding, entered in response to several letters sent from here, was handed over; from which it was learned, to more than extraordinary grief, that their Honors were still occupied with furnishing the requested remittances. How great our predicament extends has been pointed out from time to time, which indeed can in no way diminish, but must increase more and more through the course thereof and an increase of the arrears, which we experience to our sorrow more than all too much. We do not doubt that their Honors will indeed also wish to acknowledge this, and no less believe that without this interval the cafila could already, to satisfaction and complete peace of mind, have been inside Cambait for further transport; whether this, on the contrary, can now happen with the coming new moon, time and a very bold onset of money must make known. To obtain it here no effort is spared, but as yet no one is found inclined thereto. The goods are indeed in readiness to be dispatched in 15 to 20 days, 891 From Souratta, dated 20 April 1736. to be dispatched, but the workmen cannot deliver them, because the creditors, from whom the poor people have borrowed money at an unheard-of interest in order to complete the goods after all, do not desire that they be brought home, but lay their hands upon them. The arrears of the cash, Honorable sirs, is no small amount, but will amount to 60000 and more rupees according to a rough calculation, so that it cannot be conceived how your Honor comes to attribute the non-fulfillment of the respective demands (which nevertheless will consist of only 15 bales of quilts and 5 ditto large chintzes) to the desertion of the workmen as well as cruel treatment of the government; on this subject, one has indeed re-read the successive letters that went out upon their Honors' severe admonition, but could not find thereby that the non-fulfillment of the aforementioned goods was imputed to the true inconvenience, but to the lack of money, and particularly as by the letter of 24 October last, From Souratta, dated 20 April 1736. last, and the 4th of December thereafter, how the outer bazaar had to stand still from the first to the last-mentioned date for lack of money; also by earlier ones, or that of the 15th of November, how it was impossible, without the necessary transfer of money, to be able to accomplish that which their Honors also were pleased to concede by the honored letter of the 4th of December thereafter, showing also no less the true reasons thereof in the writing addressed under the date of 18 January, that even if there had been a hundred bales more, these could have been fulfilled had the remittance always followed in its time. In contrast, their Honors had an insight paired with scarcity of money, that is (a frugal one, though), yet a complete fulfillment of the demands was recommended to the utmost, and such has always been the aim of the first-signed. As for what was alleged regarding the workmen, of that nothing has been spoken except regarding the still reasonable progress 893. From Souratta, dated 20 April 1736. progress in the work, considering the present time, and under the cruel treatment of the government is understood (and not unknown) that the inhabitants, already in their death throes, continue to struggle in hopes of improvement. Now concerning that which was shared by the assistant master Swemmelaer regarding his stay at Cambait, for reasons that no agreement had yet been reached with the Nawab Momin Khan concerning the dispatched goods, it consisted in this: that this lord, above the contracted three-quarters percent, desired a present or offering which would not be made known in the King's treasury. This was debated for so long that they finally, for the entire amount, both for the contracted duties and the cited offering, willy-nilly had to deliver a small sum of 1300 rupees, besides some small durbar expenses as are customary and unavoidable thereon, as appears from the enclosed account submitted by the broker Birsboekendas. This is to be redressed by the first-signed From Souratta, dated 20 April 1736. signed upon his appearance or return to Cambait, after time and opportunity shall permit with the spring tide (paired with God's blessing). That greed and avarice, with complete disobedience to His Majesty's commands, gain the upper hand, is experienced with regret more than too much (as your Honors are quite right to say); but this role now seeming to be at its height, one must expect a desired redress therein from God's goodness, provided it is said that at court a general uprising has arisen by the taking up of arms between the Iranis and Turanis over the course of affairs in the intrusion of the heathens, of which the prime mover and protector is the Omrah Khan Dauran. However, many matters are made public that are followed by not the least truth; one shall leave the certainty or uncertainty thereof to time for discovery. Nevertheless, it is true that peace has been made through God's goodness between the Sewas and their viceroy, whose quarter-collector, after the Holi festival, took up residence inside this city.

Cambait To the same as before Good Friends, One has from here, under date of the 25th of the past month, acknowledged the receipt of Your Honours' letter of the 17th and 20th preceding; the duplicate of the latter with an appendix of the 21st has likewise been received; as well as From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 also their further letter of the 26th together with the enclosed appendices; the answered requested points in the Persian language presented to Mr. Mominchan we had expected in authentic copy under the seal of the Cazy, just as they have sent us the copy of the Parwana from Mr. Mominchan. Meanwhile, what was accomplished by them with that gentleman and his servants towards obtaining those papers for a peaceful continuation of trade and contracting, with the subsequent agreement of 3/4 percent duties for all outgoing and incoming goods to be paid by the Company, has appeared agreeable to us and is therefore reasonably approved, and as unavoidable. Considering the gift, both in cash and goods, which they have been obliged to hand over, however much the amount of 1500 ropijen is reasonably large, it is nevertheless, under the present condition of the times, better to afford than to let Your Honours remain fruitlessly at Cambait From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 Cambait, and to delay the intended plan for the re-establishment of the Amad-Abaad factory, in the expectation that the advantageous promises and written contracts will be fulfilled, to the end that the trouble taken and expenses incurred may not be in vain; but as far as their further journey up-country is concerned, this has already been fully deferred to their prudence, and the requested relief of 2000 ropijen is now remitted by two bills of exchange at [illegible] loss; also sent to them is the extract of demands of what was contracted at Amed-Abaad in peaceful days, and which should be inquired into by them upon arrival at that place as soon as possible, as to what prices the same might be negotiated at most civilly according to their sorts, above all taking care that this is done upon such samples that, upon obtaining them, one may applaud their performance, and consequently arrange the orders so that what remains unfulfilled on the previous year's demands may not serve to enlarge the new ones.
