Pious, Discreet friends, On the morning of the 6th of this month, having been advised from Kirman by the wool factor Mr. Simon Clement by missive of 26 August last, that the courier Rammazon, dispatched via that route on the 3rd of that month to your residency with our missive of the same date, did not arrive there before the 17th of the same month, having therefore been 14 full days on the road (much too long for Your Honours to allow to pass in silence), and fear having therefore arisen among us that this fellow, having been forwarded to Your Honours the following day with proper accompanying letters, might also have behaved just as sluggishly on that journey, From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. which is the reason a copy of said last letter of ours, with its register, is enclosed herewith, so that by an unexpected contingency Your Honours might not remain deprived of its contents. Referring ourselves thereto, we hereby make known to Your Honours how on the afternoon of the first-mentioned date we received a very polite missive from His Highness Thamas Chan, accompanied by a friendly one from Mirza Sadik, which we deem very necessary to send to Your Honours now, with the papers exchanged between the sultan of this road, Amir Mir Ali, and Safi Chan Beg, since the departure of the Company's ships Valkenisse and Noordwijkerhout on the past 26th of the frequently mentioned month of August; furthermore, our reply addressed to His Highness, sent to his aforementioned plenipotentiary, although all in Persian, accompanies the other annexes of this letter. While drafting this letter, having also been busy preparing our very humble reports to the High Noble Lords Masters in the beloved fatherland, and if possible forwarding them to Basra for further transit according to custom, on the 11th of this month 2569 From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. to caution and to enable us to treat friend as friend, and the enemy according to our ability and merits, considering the desperate retreat of our fellow competitors, from here up to the hoort na, and 3 European servants will show your Honour, the extract from our daily journal has provided no slight basis to us alike to establish firmly that something must be underway with respect to both the Honourable Companies. However, because the native still shows publicly the greatest good faith with respect to us up to this date, the outcome must remain commended to time, and your Honour meanwhile must watch to the best of your ability to give notice thereof as soon as practicable, with one or 2 swift foot-messengers, in case further and true reports tending to our advantage or disadvantage should come to our knowledge; we therefore also approve the agreement made with the bearer of this, entered into there, up to 150 mamudis, and meanwhile we rely on your Honour's vigilance not to forget to exercise care on your own behalf as necessity might require, which God, however, may graciously prevent. The matter concerning the delivered 10 pieces of ducats for the gift horse, with reference also to some other requested goods as a counter-present to Mahmed Taggie Chan, his cousin named Mahmed Zamoen Beese has not yet arrived, which can only be examined when we obtain the specification thereof; our decision in that regard therefore also remains suspended. However, we trust that action in that matter will have been taken responsibly. In the conferences held by your Honour with the said Duke and the occurrences therein, which do not contain much of consequence for us and the said English nation: yet, as it appears to us, having answered him provisionally as is proper, we can take satisfaction, for it was not really possible for your Honour to do otherwise, and as for us, time will reveal how he or his above-mentioned cousin will conduct themselves regarding the commission in question, and how we will behave according to the content of the two mandates when we have received them, your Honour having also acted very prudently in avoiding sending someone expressly of ours in company with one of his servants over here, for it may well be believed that the interpreter Hermet must be somewhat gullible in accepting everything at face value, to the great prejudice of his lord masters. Putting this aside only to speak of our affairs, we must make known to your Honour for consideration that it appears astonishing to us upon reflecting how indeed, with an ingenious person, such an extreme design of His Highness upon the English, found entered under date 24 of this month in the daily journal, can be considered grounded, since the Diu commissioners, if that were true, would surely not have embarked on one of the English ships, nor would such a capital of 30 thousand tomans, being half of the estate left there, expressly divided and ordered by His Highness, to have the other half fetched by us, have been placed in jeopardy, or else His Highness must have been struck very suddenly by a fit of frenzy. But that he will probably again introduce a claim impossible for us to meet, forged either from his own or other foolish conceits, is to be expected and feared from what has already been experienced by your Honour and made known to us. Then the supposition of Miersa Keijaas affords sufficient grounds for this, it having now come from ship loans to the sale thereof, and in the upper country it was mostly spoken of with ridicule on the part of the Persians regarding the nature of the vessels; so that the entanglements arising therefrom would always cause trouble, and possibly also some gifts to the Honourable Company, to our sensible regret, over and above the expenses already incurred and still to be incurred for the Denzies or Franks who had to be employed in His Highness's service. However, wishing to hope for the best in this, we hereby recommend that your Honour, if there is occasion for it, turn the departure of the English to their advantage, by also sometimes intimating earnestly in civil terms that if the Honourable Company and its servants were not treated and received more honestly and politely according to custom, they would undoubtedly follow the gentlemen of the English possibly sooner than the Persian could imagine: whenever an ambassador, Duke, or sea captain comes both here and up-country in His Highness's name to revise the mandates, and then again an authorized person of his own, such as Miersa Tackie, other governors, and possibly now again such a little cousin of Mahmed Taggie Chan, here above-mentioned, should entirely reject them and hold them invalid, which is not only shameful, but must nonetheless be endured with heartache by the Honourable Company's ministers; how now such affronts, daily travails, and uncertainty of tranquility, can your Honour

In the copy of the letter to the Beglerbegi Your Honor will find among other things warned: whenever they might require the Honorable Company's assistance for one or another enterprise, that they must make known the conditions of their desires and also what kind of favor From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. is to be expected in return, etc.; and regarding which Your Honor, when addressed by one or the other on that point, could reply quite calmly in civil terms that such is customary among all potentates, and in former times had also occurred at the court, as the English gentlemen may still serve as a living example, and on our side, regarding the readiness to serve shown together with them in the year 1697 (although fruitlessly), the cases during the presence of the Lord Ambassador Hoogcamer (principally in 1701) may serve Your Honors as a great light as to how the wild impulses of the court must be debated and if possible foiled; all of which we elucidate to Your Honor so as not to be at a loss in any way. And upon close inspection of the orders given in our dispatched letters and extract resolutions agreeing with what occurs herein, we find not much left that merits a reply, wherefore we hereby recommend all circumspection: to show, neither in writings nor in discourses, neither pitiable expressions regarding the unfortunate monarch nor contemptuous ones regarding the rising sun. For to prevent the slightest unpleasantness requires the greatest prudence, and since no one obtains a king's crown and throne except through divine providence, we are only at liberty to marvel at this in a permissible manner. Furthermore, all that Your Honor has written to us under date of 30 March and appendix of 11 April last has served to strengthen our speculation; but that Your Honor's letter sent with the Niembosje Askerbeecq to the treasurer was not lost at the same time, Your Honor will now already have learned, although we wished that such had happened. And regarding the head merchant ruined over a villainous trick that the Beglerbegi himself played at the court, and not over the complaints of the Europeans (we have made no mention of him in the Persian letters since the month of December past), being a fellow sufferer in applicable terms would also have been enough, for he was brought low beyond our doing, and everyone after all has friends. That Your Honors on the advice of Lettieff Chan were again From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. obliged to court the Beglerbegi's principal servants, and consequently also him, Lettieff, with gifts, is a true proof that the true old Persian nature still clings to these people, and we fear it will indeed be followed by the new ones; to which end (white crows excluded) in general, like all woodwork in Gamron, they must be maintained with continuous lubricating, for if they were not accommodated, they would quickly enough show the withdrawal of their affection to our detriment; so that we shall have to resign ourselves to what has been given, and we look forward to seeing the list thereof. The received coin with its explanation we shall most obediently send to Batavia at the first opportunity, together with the account concerning the considerable revolution of the empire, although previously assumed; and should the ratification of the peace, before we are informed, be reliably learned by Your Honor, provided there is a secure opportunity to Aleppo, it would also not be bad to trace that old route again for our Right Honorable Lords Superiors, though briefly and concisely detailing thereof, to the end that, first and as soon as possible alongside others, Europe may be served with that notable advice. From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. firstly, to keep the Gulf clear of enemies; secondly, when 20000 thomans in merchant goods from them are brought in and customs duties paid, as well as thirdly and lastly, when they shall have delivered Masquetta into the hands of the Persian King. This has now been advised to us in the utmost secrecy, and whatever the truth of it may be, we leave to the revelation or ripening thereof by its outcome; at any rate, be that as it may, we presume we shall not remain exempt from vexations and gifts. God grant only that we do not have to endure tyrannical and unheard-of pretexts, as the Honorable Company has already had more than enough to suffer this year, and heaven alone sees how, outside our very heavy responsibility through the service to the realm attributed to this book-year, it may yet turn out for the general welfare of their Excellencies. From the new one cited above, we also see that 2 regams to both houses were equally matched, except for the compliments, and on which account we now ask whether the excess or difference thereof is also to be understood to the detriment of the Honorable Company. Furthermore, we very much approve Your Honors' refusal to the aforementioned Sultan of the requested 15 thomans, as it agrees with the respected orders, and also because at that time he departed up-country to the new monarch at no small risk of losing his life. He has hitherto shown nothing regarding this, and so we likewise merely presume that that costly march will depart as little from his greedy memory as from the unusual cold of his body, about which much is said. By the previously cited resolution of 26 May, the intended support just extended having been reiterated in the meeting held on the 6th of that month, and having also at once weighed the assurances of the Beglerbegi concerning the rahdari, which have put our minds somewhat at ease, we have, on the first mentioned day, thought fit to assist Your Honors with an amount of 50 thomans or ƒ 2125.-.- by bill of exchange, the first of which goes herewith, to be satisfied to Your Honors in good money in 15 days after sight by Nacha Roepjent Naring, the lenders in loco being the Banians Lettjeram and Olna Mal 54 thomans, according to the exchange rate on that same day (this is now 15 per cent, having risen again since) procured by the Company's brokers, and on which account Your Honors will also have to credit us for the latter sum until that same amount can again be distributed upon the purchase of the 10 pieces of gold and silver cloth, as happened last, and for the procurement of which we furnish Your Honors with those funds, with the exhortation, if a favorable opportunity for their acquisition should present itself—how very agreeable those formerly were, the accompanying extract report from Mr. de Jager will show—and the dispatch might take place without being subject to peril regarding the inclination of the regents concerning the freedom of the repeatedly mentioned chadaars and also the unsafety of the roads (of which latter we hear nothing hereabouts), which Your Honors' good judgment will then deliberate upon herewith, as well as leaving the purchase of crack-almonds postponed for a while for the present. Regarding the dispatch of these, we intended to send them off at the same time as our Persian writings, but yesterday morning, through the arrival of a chappar from Shiraz with the news that His Majesty, having imposed a general levy of 250 thomans at ƒ 10625000:-:- over Persia, we were informed that the Beglerbegi had written on the back of a letter to the Hamcalam: "I am surprised that no reply from the Europeans has yet appeared," which caused us to sit until midnight before we achieved finished work.
