Persia, the 31st of December 1737 Regarding this, our intention to make advantageous use of the lapis tutia and aurum pigmentum in exchange for the aforesaid two assortments, we undertook this with careful consideration in mid-November. Seeing the advantage, besides that which was effectively profited in the books and upon the net yield, we had reason at that time to conclude a purchase for a small parcel, the more so because the first-mentioned mineral or lapis tutia was half a mamudi cheaper, and the other three mamudis cheaper per six pounds, than at the time when the samples were sent over with Barbesteyn in the year 1734. When it came down to it, the buyers did not want the linen, and the lapis tutia was also not equal to the sample. Therefore, in order to succeed in at least part of that undertaking provisionally, we obtained in that same month 3000 pounds of aurum pigmentum, even for half a mamudi less, against about 16908½ pounds of iron without the slightest reduction, as was also made known in the resolution. Having heard the Chief Surgeon Jan Willem Nieper declare the mineral to be of good quality after a close inspection of the model and what was received, Persia, the 31st of December 1737 we therefore most humbly request that we may learn, regarding its value and our actions in reply hereto, the gracious orders to be issued by Your Right Excellencies as to how we may venture to conduct ourselves in the future, as it may be of use if the scarcity of cash among the merchants continues and the competitors might remain exercising the use of their more frequent liberty as before, about which there is no doubt. The gumlac has been entirely sold off and thus remains solely for the Rasta paat, still to be measured out for the reasons as stated, and which truly was rather to be wished otherwise. Having casually mentioned hereinbefore how, on 26 May, we were compelled by resolution to act with certain trade merchandise, and even more circumstantially in the accompanying copy of the letters dispatched under 20 July, together with what can also be found therein regarding how we had succeeded up to that time in fulfilling the required castor root for the Governments of Ceylon and Coromandel respectively, with the inclusion of the assafoetida for the last-mentioned ministry; and whereas our further proceedings regarding this, along with what has been possible according to the notes kept in the resolutions of 22 April, 21 June, and 26 August, to satisfy the humble requisition, we therefore take the respectful liberty to report most obediently thereon and likewise hope that the reasons concerning the rosewater sent to Coromandel, upon confrontation of the exchanged letters dated Nagapatnam 13 July with our aforementioned humble letter of 20 July, as well as those to be found in the resolution of 15 June of this year, may, through Your High Excellencies' uncommon kindness, be honored with a gracious approval; we pray, however, to be instructed most obediently regarding this, whether such shall remain considered as a settled matter or not, since the said resolution came to pass in this manner and apparently no one here could have prevented or forestalled it. Regarding the goods, both precious and of lesser sort, ordered from Isfahan in accordance with the resolution of 10 April and addressed in our dispatched letter of 27 of the same month, we had more hope of success than the resident's reply of 11 June indicated and cited in the resolution of 13 July following; since at that time, in order to save on the uncommon freight expenses, it was thought that at the said place there would not be so many difficulties in providing them, the intention was to let the route of the caravan go via Shiraz to Bandar Rig, as appears from the resolution and dispatched letter of 21 and 24 of the said month of June; but this, for recorded reasons in the later, already mentioned resolution of 13 July, as well as the letters directed thither on 2 August, supplemented with an appendix of 5 of the same, was countermanded. We would, however, have wished to proceed with it, and would have preferred even more that the residents had not gotten into difficulties regarding its procurement, considering that everything that is to be brought on site can only be sent from here at the next opportunity, at which time we shall simultaneously take the honor of dutifully reporting to Your High Excellencies about it; having thus obtained from that place nothing other than 331 lb of silk instead of 35 5/6 lb, which, due to the difference in the meticals, amounts to 64 mans or 27 guilders and 4 stuivers, of which, according to the repeatedly mentioned meeting of 13 July, half is now transferred as well, as much as has resided here of old, to the end that, as obediently set down in the concluded matter under a specific article, we may be honored with Your High Excellencies' partitioned order as to how we may and must conduct ourselves. From Persia, 31 December 1737 The victories of His Majesty and also of the Beglerbegi, as appears from what was humbly touched upon here before, since both undertakings are reported here by few people, whether the triumphs will follow at last, and which we shall then leave to time to demonstrate. Concerning the affairs of the realm and the harmful conduct of the notorious Beglerbegi, Mhamet Takkie Chan, who nevertheless is still invested with the same power as recently described, we shall, with due respect, take the liberty to inform Your Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed, that no free peace was left to us until after the 8th of August, when he departed; because not long after our said most humble letter to Their Honourable, Highly Esteemed, our noble lords and masters in the Fatherland, besides what is noted in the journal under the dates of 25 and 26 May concerning 1 heavy rope and ditto anchor, we suffered an uncommon, yet at the same time very troublesome requisition, so that after much deliberation we were obliged, according to the estimate of 13 June, to proceed with handing over from on board a topmast yard that was needed at the warehouse Huijs te Foreest, but could just barely be spared for the preservation of the King's favour and From Persia, 31 December 1737 and His Beglerbegi's importance. And further, on the similar petition of the bookkeeper and provisional second Joris Brand, on 14 August just mentioned, permitted by estimate the emoluments previously enjoyed by the actual seconds, with their respective petitions accompanying the annexes, in the hope of seeing ourselves honoured in due time in this regard with your Right Honours' esteemed support (if it please you) and your highly respected orders as to how we may conduct ourselves. In the session of 26 May mentioned above, having been taken into consideration the casualty of a sprained mare in the stable there, and the completed sale of a mule for 42:10:— guilders, and the first a loss of 191:5:— guilders according to their written certificates, the said servants were also licensed and notified by letter of approval on 29 July to properly write off both these posts up to 233:15:— guilders. By further advice obtained from that residency dated 2 August, made known among other things and demonstrated by written proofs, that on the upward journey of the caravan 17 case bottles were broken in 4 cases through no fault of the muleteers, and 6:16:— guilders more were bestowed by the conductors given therewith, item another 577 mamoedies or 245:4:8 guilders were also advanced more on travel quarters than the money received by them could reach, the one and the other was granted to them for write-off, together with the delivery of 3,379 1/5 mamoedies or 436:3 1/5 guilders over
