The travel expenses which the interpreter Elias Sahid and his son incurred—at the time when the King was on the march and the former was sent after him in order to strike the iron before it grew cold and to endeavor to obtain what was at that time still lacking for the royal confirmation—amounted to ƒ 276:5:—, and were validated to the residents on 26 May, along with a counter-gift for a present of a horse from the Captain of His Majesty's Lifeguard, Mahomet Rossen Beek, amounting to ƒ 233:15:4 according to the books, but in purchase price ƒ 297:19:2, all distinctly set down in the aforementioned resolution. The reasons, mentioned in the said arrest and their comparison of everything beyond what has been reported previously, speaking more fully of this, we request more clemency from Your High Nobilities' approval than to act provisionally in this matter, and therefore we refer ourselves very humbly to the previous report. The residents having requested by letters of advice of 11 June to know how to proceed regarding the service with the interpreter in administering what had previously run under his accountability, and further how to act with the signing of letters and otherwise, they were accordingly informed of our opinion pursuant to the resolution of 13 July, and we hope that this and all that has been done will be graciously approved by Your High Nobilities. Furthermore, there is nothing especially remarkable except that, at the friendly request of the Honorable, Respected Director at Surat, Pieter Louwrens Phoonsen, a certain estate of a deceased Greek Christian, Constantijn Succa, through an amicable request from the Smyrna Consul, His Excellency the Baron van Hoechepied, has been further entrusted to the commander. This in truth has not only sometimes made us uneasy, but indeed has touched us most closely, seeing that the first in rank was included therein, considering that in the last-mentioned time we were busy with the investigation at Bushehr to establish ourselves and lay the foundation there without adding a seaman thereto, which caused us no small concern in the commission, as was obediently recorded in the resolution of 21 June aforesaid, to which, with the pleasure of your Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed, we very humbly refer; moreover, we shall now mention in this regard how, after the decease of the steward on that vessel, named Hendrik Meijndertsz, his testamentary disposition was reviewed in the said resolution of 13 June and, with approval, it was permitted to let his brother, the skipper Jan Meijndertsz, remain the heir. Some changes seemed necessary to be made due to the sudden passing on the 18th of the same month of the chief mate Job van den End, after his codicillary power of attorney was approved in council on the 21st of that month as valid, and whose vacant position provisionally was entrusted to the second mate Isaak Willemsz van Coningsbergen; furthermore, by that resolution, upon their submitted request and good testimonials, some persons were confirmed in rank with the limited salary, who on the voyage hither had been chosen by the ship's council, all recorded by name in the last-mentioned resolution. This was followed by the bookkeeper Willem Adriaan de Witt on the 22nd of the same month, also leaving his drawn-up disposition, which was likewise properly incorporated into the resolution of 3 July, with a written petition from one of his estate administrators (being the chief surgeons Jan Willem Niepers of this shore and Arnoldus Mattioine assigned to the Anthonia), namely by the first-mentioned surgeon to obtain permission to sell by public auction some goods that were subject to decay; and since this was deemed equitable, permission was also granted to him under very honored approval, as the same had to take place once again under 14 August, considering that otherwise they could not have satisfied a portion of the charges that befell the deceased on 30 July, of which mention will also duly be made after we have spoken below, among other events, of the mortal fate of the said skipper himself. The same was undergone by him during the night between the 7th and 8th of July. At the last-mentioned time, steps were therefore taken to provide anew for that vessel. Furthermore, the copies of all the further documents of the officers and summarized attestations, gunpowder account, etc., are enclosed herewith, to which we humbly refer, as we also do regarding the reasons why that small vessel, according to the considerations in the resolution of the 10th of this month, was detained a while longer and not sent back in company with the bearer of this letter. For the intention is, if the leak should offer greater prospects with time, to have the small ship brought to the opposite shore at Laer to be cared for as best as possible, and also to better supply the greatest deficiency of its cordage as well as further equipment upon the arrival of ships from Batavia, so that it may finally be allowed to undertake such a heavy voyage with somewhat more peace of mind. Proceeding further to the settlement concerning the small vessel d'Anthonia in the cited resolution of the 10th of this month, we find ourselves obliged to state that the expense account of that vessel during its lay days in the Bassoura roadstead from the 23rd of July to the 10th of November amounted to ƒ 381:22:9. And since the officials requested approval thereof, as is indeed understandable, everything must have been uncommonly expensive there, and consequently the number of refreshment days in proportion to the time they were anchored there. From Persia, the 31st of December 1737 The 12 bales of assorted linen sent thither dated the 31st of January from the English ship Richmond were properly delivered, but were not found to be as such, because following weighing and opening of 1 ditto package, 8 pieces of chellas in No. 23 chellas were missing. We therefore took the received message into consideration the following day, or the 8th of July, and could not well attribute the uncovering of the seals and the resewing of their inner wrapping to the Englishman, but had the damage reimbursed here at cost price, for reasons laid down in that resolution, to which we most obediently refer. In response to our letter of 3 July, an appendix dated the 18th ditto has again appeared, the latter relating to the said resolution of the 8th of that month. The ministers have disposed of the impounded horses, silverware, etc., of the obnoxious, but now departed from Basra Pasha named Hussien Pasha, without loss. 123: From Persia, the 31st of December 1737 as appears from their advices dated the 1st of November, with a postscript of the 10th ditto, and the estimate held here on the 10th of this month concerning the purchase of old copper. Furthermore, regarding the lack of potency in the cinnamon and the Bengal handkerchiefs, because they were not drawn upon at present, the ministers showed poor expectations for their sale in their aforementioned letter. We have therefore, at the repeatedly mentioned gathering of the 10th of this month, following old custom, thought it best to order the residents to have the cinnamon garbled, but to hold the handkerchiefs a little longer, as it cannot be known whether their sale might not revive again as happened previously; and seeing that there is no movement at all, either here or at Bushire, returning them could always be done. The 8 pieces of turbans sent thither we have received back; and in view of their being subject to decay upon too long a period of storage in these regions, we have for the present, under your great favorable indulgence, had the same shipped for return. In all likelihood, the 4 pieces at the noted Bushire, and also our equal number remaining here, will also have to be sent back in case it should turn out that nothing at all can be sold of them, as there is reason enough due to the dearness on the one hand and poverty of the people on the other. In the ministers' just-mentioned advices, strong complaints were made about the expensive purchase of the fine and ordinary cassas, item Santipore and sawaspaet mulmulls; they would have returned the same, had they not been cleared of customs, with ƒ1693:17:8. Also, through the merchant and first resident, Mr. Gutchi, an extract of the sales book from the year 1730 to 1737 was obtained from the hands of the English Consul, Mr. French, and sent hither, which then serves for Your Right Excellencies' esteemed speculation herewith. Besides which, of all their sales made—which shall hereafter also remain in the net return—the reasons thereof are recounted item by item in that missive. They still show poor hopes regarding the woolens received, the gumlac, and regarding the candy sugar; however, this last is of the very least demand. But concerning the Cottatic linens in assortment, they had indeed not sold them, but obtained good hope from every person. The servants also harbor hope that when the contents of the packs match the musters and the prices are only reasonable, fairly large parcels could be sold. Since that time until the 13th of this month, there have arrived here from Kirman in pure wool 19260 lb, namely: 540 lb still remaining from the said accounting year, 18720 lb new fleece makes as stated 19260 lb, apart from an overweight of 24 8le, all good and mostly of the red sort, there still lacking from the honoured demand of twenty thousand pounds no more than 1280 lb, which we hope also soon to obtain from the third [delivery], with the neat separate accounts of the said parcels. On the opium ¼ lb less was found, and which together, in conformity with resolutions of the 10th and 24th of this month, has been arranged; the remaining parcels were all received in good condition into the ship 't Huijs te Spijk in the presence of specially appointed commissioners. The underweight of the merchandise taken along in that vessel, demonstrated upon obtaining the findings of the said commissioner, the underweights that occurred having been served at the said Strait, are: 1½ lb or — 3/10 per cent on 509 lb cloves 2½ lb or — ¾ per cent on 309 lb nutmegs 28 lb or — ½ per cent on 5509 lb candy sugar 29 lb or — ½ per cent on 6000 lb iron.
