Inserted into the Gamron resolutions under the 13th January 1739: Note: Not entered in these, being the findings of the inventory taken of the Gamron warehouses under date 4 November 1738; annexed 4 findings reports belonging thereto. Of our most humble letter, which per Opperdoes could not be presented to Your High Noble, Severe, and Great Worships with due respect before 4 June of last year, for such reasons as we most humbly had to communicate therein, we take the liberty, with Your Honours' pleasure and in all humility, to accompany this with its duplicate, our most humble letter coming with the bearer, requesting permission to refer thereto and to graciously overlook that in this instance we excuse ourselves from sending a triplicate of what was most obediently dispatched per the ship Het Huys te Foreest at the end of January of the same year; for the reason that, praise be to God, we have already received the news with the English ship that on 2 March of last year it arrived safely at Cochin, and also because its duplicate was dutifully inserted with the first-mentioned vessel, on which account we remain moved with humble confidence and ease of mind that our failure to send it will not be taken amiss, but that by heavenly goodness we may also soon obtain the news, both regarding the happy arrival of this letter and of the first-cited vessel. Entering with respect upon our dispatch, we take the extraordinary liberty to proceed with the report of the trade and report in all humility: Introduction that the trade, which also suffered hindrance from the progress of his hunt on the opposite shore here, appeared much better before the end of the last concluded financial year than the outcomes have made us experience since that date, because every merchant was seized with fear on account of the Beglerbegi's retreat from Muscat to Julfar and his arrival at Congo, as can be seen in the daily journal under the dates 12 and 31 August of last year. And although his reputation was diminished regarding the outcome of the enterprise (of which the empire article will report further), the power remained tied to the former great character, seeing his plenipotentiaries here, and even minor governors supported, capable of carrying out all extortions upon everyone; whereby all merchants, since his unexpected return with their cash to conduct trade, have kept themselves so sorrowfully quiet that it was impossible to execute more than has been done in this place, and of which the sales in the following compendium of the settled accounts with the Company's brokers in the said year make further demonstration. 1/25 - . . . . . . 5297. —. 8. —. 10. 6 1/5 r=m 2264. 14. 8 1 From Persia, 25 February anno 1739 goods (loss in the net, passable little profit in the gross) may be relinquished, likewise mentioned, on account of the loss-making lots shown on the reverse side, we have indeed, in accordance with our duty, made efforts to sell the same at a higher price, but it has not been possible, especially regarding the turbans and dherriabadis; the first yielding according to the books, after deduction of brokerage, still 12 1/3 per cent and the others 27½ per cent, asking very humbly in regard to all such goods, for the reasons alongside here, your High Excellencies' most respected and gracious license, when one here truly sees and finds that there is no chance to negotiate more for them, and yet they yield a passable little profit in the gross yield, to be allowed to let them go, because their remaining stored consumes the interest of their purchase capital and also makes the goods grow old and subject to decay. The handkerchiefs, although according to the books they would give an advance of 61 7/3 per cent and 26½ per cent in the net yield, we would have been willing to reduce in the said manner by 1/4 or 1/2 mamudi, or f —: 2. 2. to f —: 4: 4 a piece, which now is worth ms 3 or f 1: 5: 8, in case indigenous merchants came who asked for the whole lot or anything of note of them, notwithstanding the brokers, in praising them to everyone, have assured us this has been done, and still stand by their word From Persia, 25 February 1709 that the handkerchiefs are of a European and not an indigenous assortment, being a domestic sort; and therefore it will also go very slowly here in clearing the remaining stock on hand. From Persia, 25 February 1709 Regarding the poor sale of mace, permission to return it is also requested, see the text; but very reverently submitted; taking furthermore in due respect the liberty hereby to submit most humbly to Your Right Honourables' consideration the poor vent of mace everywhere in this directorship, as no more than 61¼ lb. has been sold in 5 years, or 1223 lb. dispatched together with gifts, provisions, etc.; and therefore, under the present local disposition, having less and less of a good opinion of trading in it as was done in former times, the brokers are also disheartened; and the reports from the outer trading posts, together with what we experience locally, give us reason in this case humbly to request of Your Right Noble, Valiant, and Right Honourable Worships your gracious permission to be allowed to return the same, as it is well to be considered that through a much longer storage in the warehouses, no matter how it is preserved, it might indeed deteriorate in quality, whereas the same could still find employment, among others according to Surat returns, subject to your highly respected approval; wherefore we shall in all humility await Your Right Noble and Right Honourable Worships' esteemed orders, since keeping about 200 lb. here will well be enough for a year, so that all this concerning the matter can be noted from the estimate held. From Persia, 25 February 1709 Similar wares having met with success, there is apprehension of a considerably scarcer market, because their commerce is full of snags and difficulties, and from the adjacent jurisdiction what is to be wished regarding them is that it will not float anywhere; therefore, according to the estimate of 20 January of the current year regarding the broadcloths, we must most humbly report that what we have had on hand here has succeeded fairly well, though not for higher prices than was recently reported, and we do not doubt in the least that the small remainder will be measured out to the inquirers; but the officials of the aforementioned outer trading posts do not succeed so well in this, and after on 20 November of the past year, among other merchandise, an English ship moreover brought goods of that trade locally, an even greater reduction in sales will possibly be caused, since to the competitors it is almost all the same at what price, money, or goods, they generally turn over their merchandise in 3 or more months' time, which causes a great detriment to the Company, and increases our heartfelt wish regarding those competitors to see a prosperous outcome through severe bankruptcies following upon it. With the 6 packs of Madurese guinees sent to Bassoura, and 1 ditto to Boucheer to be auctioned on 22 April of the year 1738, no desired success was obtained, but everything was received back per the Adriana, notwithstanding that the first-mentioned trading post has had a good opinion of those wares for several years; but the letters of the officials from both those places, dated 22 August and 24 October 1738, noted a similar outcome to what we experienced and made known in the aforementioned estimate, as well as the dispatches to Ceylon dated 30 April, provided with an appendix of 31 May concerning some parcels assigned to us to our regret in the past year; so that we shall consider ourselves very pleased if our cancellation of that assortment, which was drafted therewith, will have arrived early enough in Colombo, since we cannot doubt that the Noble and Right Honourable Lord, Ordinary Councillor of the Dutch East Indies and Governor of the famous island of Ceylon, Gustaaff Willem van Imhoff, if feasible, will have been pleased to provide for this; and since they are white cloths without any corrosive dyes, they can indeed promise no profit on the net, but still a little advantage on the gross return, losing at 24 shahis or ƒ 10:4:— per piece 12 2/5 percent on the former, and on the latter it yields 11¾ percent, since the brokers know of no other vent for them than when, upon the sale of spices and pepper, the merchants have need of cloth; and might it be...

33 From Persia, The 25th of February 1739 nutmegs per Opperdoes brought in with indication of what was lacking therein of dust and sweepings preserved according to custom, so now with 960 1/4 damaged pieces demand were to arise, which promised us a more profitable sale both in those and in all remaining similar wares, we would consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to attain the so long and deeply desired objective pertaining to the true interest. The parcel of nutmegs obtained per Opperdoes, and dutifully mentioned in the resolution of 23 May of the past year, was, upon the warning of the warehouse master—as happened with those that his companion or bringer of this had brought in and is known by the resolution of 27 March of the same year—garbled according to the honored order by garbling of the nuts by specially appointed commissioners in the presence of the fiscal, and thereupon lost — 1/8 per cento or 61 3/4 lb, being the collected dust and sweepings alone amounting to 26 1/4 lb; and the culled or damaged nuts 934 lb, found saleable or deliverable 5197 lb out of the whole parcel of 6219 lb which, as said, was cleaned; furthermore, regarding their proceedings at the session of 15 July, there was nothing to object to; for the rest, the good nuts have been preserved again according to Gamron custom and also remain good; the 2 mentioned small parcels of damaged nuts and the dust together, From Persia, The 25th of February 1739 handled according to previous custom and will also be reviewed in the cargo later. From Persia, the 25th of February 1739 If our humble petition, along with the other requests, might be granted a favorable consideration, everything can be settled, all the more so because at this time, since the entanglement of this Empire with the Arab is doubtful to cease, the lots of merchandise reviewed therein apparently could not be turned over as smoothly as was found in the books to have occurred in previous golden centuries of peace. And for that reason we would then also consider ourselves obliged on our part, in case the said general demand of Opperdoes might be fulfilled, to receive a definitive decision with only just as much in weight of goods of the merchandise for the said year 1739/40, with the increase only of the following: 6 to 700 lb saten maschaten, 200 bales of fine Ceylon Cinnamon; with the humble prayer that for the rest, concerning other matters, we may refer to the accompanying copy of the resolution of 20 January last and our duplicate general demand, with all respect accompanying this; all this being likewise respectfully accompanied, for the convenience of Your High Noble Grand Worships, by a compiled reflection of the demands since the year 1730 and what has been fulfilled thereon, regarding the merchandise alone. The trade and specification booklets of the past financial year from the outer offices having arrived one after another, and having been reviewed at the meetings of 5 and 18 November of the past year, after which the main ledgers, according to the estimate of the latest resolution, have also been brought into balance, so that on 31 December they were exhibited in council, and having then also been found to agree upon exact inspection with the aforementioned and the pay books of this directorship, together with what concerns Kirman and the shore-factor, there was noted at that time that which the debtors retained at the close of the account, namely: Kummertjent, Abtjent, and Wisschemmerdas, the Company's brokers, remained indebted as of the end of August 1738 in total mams. 803700:— or ƒ341572:10:—. The bookkeeper and provisioner Anthonij Vink also m. 5515:— or ƒ2343:19:10. The residency of Kirman remains debit the ancient debt of ƒ1830:18:— and finally the estates under the Curator ad Lites have been received for the benefit of the inheritors to the amount of ƒ1574:6:2. From Persia, the 25th of February anno 1739 charges and profits demonstrated and compared together to liquidate Naersen's estate; wherefore, equity having been considered mutually, we most respectfully defer this petition to your High Noble, Severe, and Grand Worships' gracious decision in favor of the heirs of Ottumsjent and Issourdas, the present brokers, most obediently, without making any further citations which could cause tediousness through excessive length; in the mentioned resolution of September 13th, it is also noted that the last half-yearly estate moneys, of which mention was made previously, have likewise been procured. From Persia, 25 February 1739 how much profit was made in the past year, and how much could still be gained, in that region the best prospects for a profitable trade, particularly concerning linens, are uncommonly dull and may possibly remain virtually stagnant for a long time due to the competitors previously cited here, through the bungling of their operations; and since on 10 December we duly replied thither concerning this and the principal interests as necessary, we most humbly request Your Right Honourable, Valiant, and Highly Esteemed Sirs to allow us to refer thereto; and proceeding with all respect to the further report regarding the said residency, to communicate with deference how, by the said resolution of 18 November, the transactions there were considered and examined by us: that through the said stagnations in trade, according to the net and gross returns inserted in the aforesaid resolution and also in the said letter of 30 September, no more than ƒ32869:19:— or 103¼ percent was yielded by the latter, but after deduction of 25 percent currency loss, barely half of that, or 52½ percent, or rather ƒ16703:46:— was gained in the past year, which effectively causes a great oppression to the residency, because the servants experience, from their comparison, that their cash returns, which they see obtained by others with an agio, suffer a loss of no more than 5 percent; furthermore, that their daily expenses for the lodge, ship costs, wages, etc., as well as the incoming cash, if not with an agio, are at least spent without loss according to the exigencies of the times; so that the ministers have sufficiently urged that this proposal be made, and have already undertaken it themselves in humble letters dispatched to the Right Honourable Gentlemen Principals in the Fatherland under date of 10 October of the past year. However, even though the ministers have repeatedly given evidence that the Turkish coin, which especially since the presence of Mr. Gutchi as merchant and first resident there has been received as return from that place, should not incur the loss of 25 percent, we cannot do otherwise for their material benefit than humbly to present the same hereby to Your Right Honours for the relief or reduction of that burden. Leaving all this then with the utmost reverence in this petition, we shall dutifully cite further from their comparison: that the additional expenses incurred, amounting to ƒ1196:1:—, for the reasons given in the aforesaid resolution, have necessitated this adjustment, principally arising from the presence of two ships in one year and the resulting additional gifts, which are inevitable with every ship's arrival. From Persia, 25 February 1739 most obediently to communicate under 18 November how, according to previous custom, upon the arrival of the bearer hereof, D' Adriana, there on 21 July, as well as on 10 September, gifts were presented to the pasha as well as to several regents amounting to ƒ6865: 6:8, and of which their given reasons caused the approval thereof, just as it also resulted in their disbursement of expenses for merchandise incurred in the past financial year up to ƒ3872:17:8. And because the inundation of the Euphrates, which was breached and undiked to hold back the pasha, Agmet Pasha's design with his bands of Arabs sorting under Sjeer Sjadoen as well as of Seeg Mhamet Manna, a pestilential air, spoiling of the ordinary drinking water creeks, and thus a great distress arose there, through which they had to flee outside the city and were necessitated in an extraordinary manner to save their lives, as well as to have drinking water procured from other places of the Euphrates, which amounted to ƒ893: 16, this also prompted the passing thereof; having been rejoiced that these ministers were still able to preserve themselves according to their ability. Furthermore, upon the residents' good testimony concerning the conduct of the junior assistant Claude Anthonij Schoffier, consideration was given to letting a new engagement of three years as assistant take effect for him on 18 November with an improvement of ƒ24 per month; and since, according to already mentioned further writings from there, on 24 October last, one Ian Iacob, the son of the Spahan interpreter Elias Sahid, aged 27 years, was nominated for the service of interpreter, and his abilities for this were asserted as natural, as well as having already shown evidence thereof by the Spahan letter dated 26 December 1736 to possess the required innate abilities; it was therefore, in consideration of the fact that in the years 169½ sometimes one and also two interpreters served there, as well as to uphold the respect of the Honorable Company towards that nation which is also needed and especially required when solicitations occur, etc., also, under Your Right Honorable, Most Worshipfuls' gracious pleasure, that person was accepted into the service as provisional interpreter for Bassoura with an addition of ƒ34 per month and ƒ17:17:— board money under an engagement of five years according to the resolution of the 28th of the said month of November; the further restriction in that resolution and the dispatched letters of 10 December being left to the ministers. From Persia, the 25th of February 1739. The merchant sent out has arrived safely and, after a mule in his convoy broke down, a horse was sent to him in its place, and the travel expenses along with the gifts presented to certain minor rulers have been accounted for. To satisfy Your High Nobilities' frequently given and highly revered orders regarding the principal matters and the events that have occurred since Opperdoes' departure, we seek to couch them here as conveniently as possible; wherefore, making a most humble beginning, we respectfully present to Your High Noble and Right Honourable Worships that the caravan with the consignment of merchandise and further provisions according to the outgoing invoice amounting to f 13392:18:-, under the supervision of the bookkeeper Steven Pruymelaer, pursuant to the council resolution of 6 May 1738 and the appendix of 4 June of the said year, set out with the said messenger on the 11th of the just-mentioned month, directed thither, and arrived there safely, in accordance with the received advice of 21 August. In this advice it was also cited that, following the order, after his departure on the road he doubted whether his pack animal could endure the journey, and therefore took the resolution to send it back and request another in its place by letter of 16 June. This was granted to him and noted in the estimate of 10 July, the purchased horse having cost f 148:15:-, and his expenses incurred during the journey amounting to f 416:18:8, and the small gifts presented to the rulers living along the way amounting to f 20:2:8; all of which was considered and passed during the session of 18 September 1738. Furthermore, regarding the indicated scarcity of cash in the residents' treasury by letter of 18 May and how best to assist them, it was deemed best at the session around mid-June to provide for them from here in good time, as it is presently more profitable than awaiting bills of exchange from there. We therefore drew 3 bills of exchange to the total local amount of 7200 mahmudis or f 3060:-:-, to be paid out again in Isfahan as 6000 mahmudis or f 2550:-:-, resulting in a loss of 1200 mahmudis or f 510:-:-, or 16 1/3 percent. We wrote to them the following day (namely the 16th of June aforesaid) on how they were to conduct themselves, in order to avoid seeing the petitioned goods burdened with anything other than their actual purchase price and the further costs for packaging, freight, etc., in the humble hope of having acted in this regard according to Your High Nobilities' revered intentions. The Isfahan caravan, in response to our letter dated 23 January, also arrived safely in loco, and everything was found in good and proper condition, as appears from the notes in the resolution of the 29th and our brief letter sent thither under date of 31 January just passed. The residents, by theirs of 26 December of the past year, provided with an appendix two days later, demonstrated their reasons concerning what could not be fulfilled on the respective demands, namely: 100 pieces of Japonsjes for the government of Ceylon; 520 lb crack almonds, namely: 100 lb for the government of Coromandel, 200 lb for the directorship of Bengal, 400 lb for the command of Malabar; 7 lb garden seeds, to wit: 1 lb red cabbage for the directorship of Surat, 2 lb catmint, 2 lb tarragon for the just-mentioned command; of which seeds nothing is ever to be obtained in Isfahan. Regarding the Japonsjes alone, we have now recommended their procurement to the employees by the just-mentioned letter, because they are not easily subject to spoilage and undoubtedly cannot well be spared, according to what could be gathered from old requisitions. Furthermore, the residents, in their reply to the demand noted in the margin dated 21 August 1738, still offer some hope of obtaining them, in such manner as the accompanying copy thereof can provide further report, to which we defer.
