ultimo July 1740 From Persia In what severe losses the Company has seen itself plunged during the state revolutions here in loco, and in what mortal danger its servants found themselves at the same time in these regions, seems to us very unheeded, whereas it ought to be considered as lamentable as it is remarkable by everyone who has read the corresponding emergency regulations (not to mention previous times), dated Spahan 12 September, appended 24 and 26 October, item Gamron 5 October, both of the year 1732, as well as written and lived once again from here to Spahan 13 September 1736; and thus having seen for oneself how great damage is caused by violence and that something unforeseen can happen to a person, which in both cases will make the greatest intellect go astray, and that everything was struck down as if with one blow. In those unfortunate times, it was still a great fortune that by the Gollova, or chief of the Sophi, here named Miersa Kassi, an Ali Kuli Beg was placed in a certain council by order of Thamas Culichan (now known by the name of NadersJah), and moreover that the dangerous disclosures of the known Portuguese married father (who is now dead) were stopped in a discreet manner, so that in that way breathing room could be had to form a reasonable reply. But if the Gollossa had beforehand been treated opportunely with a present from the servants, and had wanted to bring the old cows mentioned in the cited letters to pasture and have everything recorded for the use of a future meeting, we presume it would not even have remained at such an obligation, and even less could it have been hoped to see the prerogatives follow in such a manner as Your Right Honourables find yourselves currently still assured with this monarch through the gifts mentioned in the margin. It is to be wished that in the future our obligated zeal, which we constantly strive to expend to achieve great profits, may also at the same time be gratified with a speedy re-establishment of trade, and that here, instead of such great mignons of His Majesty, regents with somewhat less power may again be appointed, as these can be managed with far less and also let the merchant keep his own, whereas on the contrary the present ones are very greedy, tyrannical, and arrogant. For Spahan saying ministers that one will have to abandon as soon as the king is due to appear there, who with his accompanying, overly intoxicated court retinue is capable of making the entire Company office and all merchandise and effects depart, and then having the bonds signed by his ministers. Furthermore, at Gamron and Bassoura together no more profit was made than f 62600:-, being therefore f 71255:8:- behind compared to the year before; and from those profits the Company must equip its ships and let the ships at Gamron be torn to pieces by the sun; also it seems to us that if this is calculated in this manner, then it should properly be taken into account the f 25500:- advanced as a loan to the viceroy by order of the king, of which Your Honourables make mention in the general letter of 2 April 1737, stating that only f 2215:10:8 was discharged from it, so that the remainder was f 23284:9:8, as well as the expenses of fetching the ambassador's goods from Duwel, the drafts drawn on the Prince, the tolls paid in advance, broker Moeltgent separately to the sum of f 127500:-. 69 From Persia ultimo July 1740 The adjacent debt of the brokers is still very large, and accompanied by no hope of its recovery (in so far as it is possible for us to judge the state of the office). Furthermore, we report in humility that Moehtjent with his family is in Malabar in a poor state, for whose maintenance we provide in fulfillment of the report dated Cochin 21 January 1740. Of the adjacent remaining debt, since then, on the obligations resting in our hands, a total has been collected of f 4330:13:4 2/3, leaving the Hon. Company on date 18 April of this year still to receive f 18953:16:8 1/5, for the recovery of which one must exercise a patient reckoning of time, not before the upcoming date harvest or until the extortions might cease. We can assure Your Right Honourables in all sincerity that the giving of presents or other court services goes very heavily against our hearts, and we would often rather have stepped into a perceptible refusal against some new powerful lords, had it not been experienced that the Hon. Company's interest can be better served with a forced and quiet compliance, rather choosing something damaging to the purse than the vexations of the Persians, as one has been subject to them of old, which having named crafty practices with a sensible refusal. The debt of the brokers is still large, f 106058:6:8, besides that of the broker Moeltgent written towards Spahan.

From Persia the last day of July 1740 From Your Honour indeed ƒ86912:12:10 on the 22nd of April thereafter, and awaiting a reply thereto, we will, with regard to the further dispatch with the merchant and former head of Basra George Gutchi, who departed for Batavia on 25 December of the recently passed year, humbly say that it has as yet remained quiet concerning the said sum mentioned herein, up to ƒ43755:2:—. And we have at this departure laid aside the remainder on the flight amounting to ƒ86912:10:—, with the specifications belonging thereto, and at that time, together with himself, most obediently submitted it to Your Right Noblenesses and made everything known. Furthermore, among the copies, that which belongs to this goes forward for highly esteemed consideration and shortening of this, in addition to the original findings regarding the broker's gold works and so on sent under the just-mentioned date, remaining at the trade office and dated 4 June 1738, being dated 30 January 1736. And it has been our sensible sorrow to perceive from the aforementioned high-ranking Batavia missive that the same was not forwarded with the other humble enclosures. Concerning what was given as gifts, noted in the margin, the matter stands as Your Right Honourable Noblenesses are pleased to suppose, and in addition we hold ourselves obliged to say that this disbursement truly occurred for the maintenance and upholding of the ancient mandates, just as we previously took the liberty respectfully to communicate. Our humble desire regarding this is solidly grounded, obliging us continually to strive for its attainment, and therefore we must continuously implore the blessing of God needed for this from the bottom of our soul. Then, regarding the approach to that essential point, we see to our great sorrow no great prospects yet, and our neighbours mentioned earlier also prevent this very much. The only hope remaining for us is solely to keep in Your Right Honourable Noblenesses' gracious expectation according to the time and our utmost ability, and to attend to the interest as best we know whenever an opportunity presents itself, so that we assure with all reverence that nothing would gladden us more than, through a desire so long wished for, to be placed in a state, following the resemblance of former times when the ducat was cheap, to obtain somewhat more profitable returns on which no loss is to be supposed, the adjacent capital of ƒ30771:4:12 comprising the said small goods. And we do not doubt that their outcome has already come to Your Right Noblenesses' agreeable notice. If by the English and French gentlemen, in the old manner, their goods at Basra were sold to the merchant and they were obliged to remain within those bounds as servants of the Honourable Company, then all inland Turkish merchants would also undoubtedly have continued with the export of cash for trading. But now the competitors' enterprise of sending their wares with caravans to Aleppo and tackenaars large vessels to Baghdad has been established, the English even keeping an European plenipotentiary at the last-mentioned place to be allowed to conduct trade there, one can also not blame the merchant for letting those enthusiasts endure the danger, so that in loco there is never any profitable advantage made of such willing service. Margin notes: The former second at Basra George Gutchi had on account said sum, up to ƒ43755:2:—, and we have upon this departure removed him and transferred the same as trade bookkeeper to Gamron in order to bring in and account for the moneys there, but what is to be expected of this, time will tell. Meanwhile it is very likely that the Company will again have to lay out and pay the remaining ƒ4375:—: which the said Gutchi was charged with according to the orders given by Your Honour, along with the interest thereon. And even if everything turns out for the best and Gutchi is capable of paying, then she will have to take to her account not only the damage of the aforesaid ƒ43775:— but also all the entries mentioned here above. Of the gifts given in Gamron, Isfahan, and Kirman to the amount of ƒ39740:16:— in purchase price, besides those of Basra, we shall not speak, as it is presumed that the profit and loss account has been burdened with them. Could now what is received in return and payment make good all these disadvantageous entries, it might still be somewhat accommodating, but on Persian money a great loss occurs, and if one examines the cargo of the ship Stadwijk recently received in return at Batavia, it consists, besides cash, wheat, wool, copper works, in paisas, which last-mentioned specie moreover has been so noticeably debased, in a lot of fruits, pistachios, rose water, crack-almonds, and similar trifles (of which many sorts are to be obtained abundantly enough at the Cape of Good Hope) to the amount of fully ƒ419109:10:8; but which cargo upon sale will to all appearances bring more loss than profit, because it consists more in consumption than in merchantable goods. It is therefore so far from the case that we would be able to agree to the proposal of the ministers to extend this sad trade still further to Baghdad.

From Persia, ultimo July 1740. To be maintained upon occasion in Baghdad and Constantinople, and something good concerning that matter has been presumed or written, but one still has a little hope regarding the introduction into Aleppo or qualifying the same to 2 to 3 months' time to sell goods, so that we are daily mindful of abolishing from time to time such trading posts as Persia and others that make the Company's administration extensive and unmanageable, causing more damage than profit, unless your Honors should not suffer all too noticeable a setback, serving to represent the present constitution fundamentally to the Persian ministers, or whether a final reply is, Honorable and Most Worshipful Gentlemen Masters, not yet easily practicable. For assuming today trade seems willing to prosper, tomorrow it can again be destroyed by accidents; or otherwise one is assured that whenever the King restores tranquility in his realms and does not tax the merchant, the latter could circulate his funds with profit, from both of which matters the most essential interest could be expected for good success. Then more reasons could be given for the experience of satisfaction; since we are now, in the interim during our stay, nevertheless compelled to gamble on equal doubtful waters with all other European and other nations residing here, in the course of trade, like currency, now high, then low in price, or whatever year can reckon to be best for the masters' profit should be adopted. Thus it appears therefrom that nothing is yet properly fixed or has its permanent definition, and for the verification of which we have humbly explained ourselves further, we have today answered the highly esteemed Batavian requisition dated 10 October 1739; and humbly referring thereto, we shall, with deeply owed respect, remind your Honorable and Most Worshipful Honors regarding the rest noted here in the continuation of that which we proposed at the end of the year 1736 in our humble letters from the city, in order that the decrees of His Majesty and his beglerbegi may be obtained. Concerning the Kirman goats, one could speak further if it has actually become known to you that the mange is the cause of the mortality, against which here in this country the washing with tobacco water or saltpeter is used. If possible, and that here all is easy to obtain, it would also do well, as it was for private parties, but experience teaches that all that is done for the Company turns out poorly. The ministers will be excused from purchasing and sending such animals and from all new enterprises that are proposed for the profit of the Company, namely that of: From Persia, ultimo July 1740. Per a ship like Rittem, to send directly from here to Cabo de Goede Hoop the Kirman sheep, goats, wool, lapis tutia, red Persian earth, etc., without mixing them; but since this remained undone and it has now been approved for us to discontinue the wool trade, it might also well happen that the accompanying report of two skippers, Pieter Monk and Andries Roxaart, would not be deemed of use, showing the same that in 3½ and 4 months the voyage can be made from here, which would have been the best way for the livestock, for the wool, and everything that one might have shipped, just as aurum pigmentum would also do well as good wares in the fatherland; and our humble opinion would have been the only and best way to obtain the animals alive and fresh in the latter region, and the wool along with the further cargo less spread out, preserved, and sound through a speedy voyage than is feasible via Batavia, being transported into the fatherland. Thus, in one voyage, apparent satisfaction could yet have been given to your Honorable and Most Worshipful Honors, concerning which so much longing is to be found in the writings. For the rest, we take the unusual liberty most obediently to present the aforementioned report of the two skippers here alongside, and in similar respect leave this undertaking to your Honorable and Most Worshipful Honors' penetrating judgment. To prevent detriment and for a profitable matter for this directorate, it would also be very desirable if it were feasible for Their Right Excellencies, the High Indian Government, to cause the Persia-bound vessels to depart again hitherward in the month of July, since those at least that go direct can seek anchorage here in the roadstead ultimo September or mid-October, and those coming via Cochin in November; because that is the best time to provide Basra and Bushire with merchandise and necessities, to write out the respective requisitions according to former customs for the subordinate trading posts for what must be expected therefrom for speedy fulfillment; and the ships can also much better and earlier obtain their unloading and cargo again, seeing that the coolies along with the native vessel crews have just returned from the date harvests with a refreshed body and are also more available for the necessary work, because most seek to regain their spent poverty. In such success, the ships could hopefully avoid the extra hot season or calm, taking their return voyage at the latest until the first or mid-March; but if they arrive around that region in solitary fashion, one is thwarted in this.

75 ulto July 1740 From Persia of the wool-stewers, Pullebanden, that those people are not helped that much, and the above cannot make such headway either, and thereupon ship and sails here fall into the painted quilts and fine nettle-cloths, but we have had to refrain from extraordinary overtime; everything became virtually powerless, and from these circumstances there exists, moreover, spoilage of goods, through the long journey hither, and also those which are then taken in again from the warehouses into the ships, no matter how fresh they may be, often to the detriment of the Honorable Company and lately of the ships' officers, on the journey thither. Consequently, if the shipments, in the hope of a benevolent acceptance, so to speak, could take place on the former footing to Batavia, as with the common merchandise, ordinary coffee, cloths, etcetera, the passage of time would, within one to two years according to our humble opinion, show a remarkable difference for the better. And since we have found ourselves most and earliest assisted in the products sent almost everywhere by the ministry of Coromandel respectively for over 4 years now, and this to our special obligation, among other things by civil letters addressed hither by the Honorable Jacob Mossel together with the Council on the Coast there on 6 August and 25 October, received on 12 March, along with the extraordinary, otherwise very severe damage, upon receipt at the same time of their duplicate reports dated 17 October and 14 December 1738, as well as 29 July and 12 September 1739, which has been pursued with renewed affection all the more to our sincere encouragement; just as the one and the other will also without delay, in its proper place, have been confirmed to Your Right Honorable Excellencies by the aforementioned last letter without waiting for the arrival of this one, concerning the proposal made by the aforementioned ministers to unload the copper and ditto coin from the ships sent from here at the Malabar Coast or Tuticorin at the convenience of the shipment for any other western offices, in order to avoid the 4 percent which otherwise still happens to fall upon it. And although at present locally almost the entire turnover of that mineral has been wrested from our power and rendered hopeless to push through any further, through the harmful orders of the Viceroy and no less the competitors' reckless bidding up of prices in this trade; we now also take the humble liberty to add to that good proposal what, according to our very humble opinion, could even be advantageous if that which is currently required at the Coast comes to yield a suitable profit, especially if tammer in sort, sulfur, and auripigmentum also did so. Thus, upon the return of the ships departing from here, their hold space could, instead of ballast, mostly be filled up with profit-yielding goods. There is likewise lacking, for the fulfillment of this profitable aim and expectation, a gracious license to allow a ship to depart directly for Coromandel according to the state of the times, the more so because the loss on Persian currency will be well bearable through the profits yielded here, at least on most pound-goods that are Batavian and Ceylonese products, along with the precisely established profit at the Coromandel Coast on various Persian goods; for the English and French are accustomed, when transporting tammer, namely dates, thither and also to Malabar, to gain many times a capital or plenty, according to their own words, and the Honorable Company could also enjoy this, to some extent to alleviate the disadvantages that it regrettably suffers in these regions. It has succeeded in what is demanded for returns, to which we refer, in which it is hoped that the wool will be found at our latest gathering of Kerman. Our orders regarding about July 1740 From Persia, inserted, and in pursuance of the demands and our deliberations on cloths relating thereto, as well as fulfilling the respective demands in humility to be continued here, we do not doubt whether Your Right Honorable Excellencies will have learned of the caused attrition through the demise of the head of Spahan, the Junior Merchant Mattheus van Leijpzig of blessed memory, from our obedient last letter of 25 December of the recently passed year, and likewise under the following article here, in what worrisome state we were until 10 April, as well as how matters there have cleared up again to some tranquility. The prompt dispatch of some items and ensuring they could feasibly be received here in good time, considering moreover the good condition of the received duplicate demands dated Nagappatnam the 30 January 1739 laid down regarding the matter, and believing that in following this we would not fail to gain Your Right Honourable’s gracious approval for the future, likewise to prevent for the most part any deficiency in meeting the said requisites, with which one usually or annually found oneself honoured, and also to prevent as best as possible the embarrassment of the Spahan residents; therefore, four days later, it was written thither and pointed out what was to be expected here at the first opportunity and what they had to provide towards the month of September or at the latest October; item, to what extent they themselves might rely upon the year 1744, which are solely fruits, which must always be written for in advance from there; then, in case the goods demanded according to the date and as yet missing should appear in loco before the departure of the Middenrak, as according to all appearances may properly happen, then both will be able to be sent in the best time and also properly handed over, and furthermore the residents for the lading of the expected ships with From Persia, the last of January further reasoning to meet the Spahan servants from satisfying the demands have done amiss than with the venerated missive new demands after that written occurrence here forward to make a beginning to establish a new provision pro, and if meanwhile one should be obliged to make a reduction or alteration in one thing or another upon the arrival of the said positive orders, this will, upon the receipt of our letter which might arrive in Spahan around the end of April or the month of May, be far more easily effected than if all the demands were charged to the servants at the same time, seeing that they then cannot possibly be in a state to get everything ready for dispatch before the last of August or primo September; and such has also procul dubio become known by the Spahan marginal reply understood therewith dated 30 April June 1739. But although that document supports the increase, we nevertheless still hope in all humility from Your Right Honourable’s gracious favour that our necessitated arrangement under the mentioned date of 18 April to the end that all partly From Persia to the residents are remitted such monies as the text of the Company has to pay, partly fully, and also not to fall short in maintaining the Company’s delicate high esteem among the grandees of the realm, or descendants of His Majesty, it may graciously be noted that by our mentioned letter of the 22 of that month we still have had to support the residents with a bill of exchange amounting to mamudis 63600 or f 27030.—, and of which there, after deduction of Nabat, must be brought neat into the cash tomans 600 at f 25500.—, not being able to doubt but that thereby the furtherance of everything by the servants’ conducts will be answered with all candour and in due time. For Your Right Honourables’ kind permission to send for the cordial stones from Cochim, we must not fail to express our most humble thanks, with the obedient communication that the same, with what was expected from that quarter, as well as the 9000 lb of Ceylon coffee beans and 24000 lb of cinnamon, could not reach us this year; so that we do not doubt but that Your Right Honourable will have seen this circumstantial advice from the copies which the respective ministers on the dates From Persia, the last of July 1740 on the dates 13 December 1739 and 18 February following dispatched hither, and therefore we again most humbly request Your Right Honourables by this for the uncommon liberty in that regard, because the Ceylon products sell very well here. The residents at Bassoura say indeed in their letter to us of 1 October 1737 that if the Gamron ministers had provisioned them in time with the requested merchandise, they might well have dared to assure with good reason that this residency could serve the Company as a good and favorable residency instead of a burden, and that the profits would then also have increased markedly. And with respect to the coffee, that it is unthinkable that the said nations would fetch it from Mocha, where according to the allegation of the servants they would have to spend more on purchase than the Company offers to sell the same for in Persia. From Persia last of July 1740 have done have demanded firstly that their remainders of cloves on the 5th of April still consisted of 5772 lb and 1519½ lb of nutmegs, whereas of the first in this financial year up to the said day they had sold there 408½ lb of the first and also 842½ lb of nutmegs, and secondly in order with those remainders to keep the merchant going somewhat everywhere to the utmost of their ability, not being able to leave untouched that Bouchier since the commissioner was there alone has sold 5683½ lb of cloves up to the 12th of this month, and our previous turnovers, as demonstrated by the comparison of the remainders, has kept us from daring to request anything in the petition for cloves made in haste and humility, by letter of the Basra ministers dated 7 January, except and besides the communicated reasonableness of the Musselim and the poor progress of trade through lack of money, nothing of particular remark, but besides that indeed a daily account and 2 monthly specifications of October and November have come before us, so we can take the one as a notification, and the other together as promised. Last of July 1740 From Persia the Factor and his request for some increase of rice, just as we then furthermore use the liberty concerning this to assure with all due humility that this proof of high favor will never be abused, but that one will always act regarding this according to reasonableness. After revision of the papers received on 23 April and previously dated the 5th of the same month, one has, among others, passed on that occasion the sent and at the meeting of the 27th of the same month exhibited 5 specifications of the supported expenses over there in the months of 9ber and Xber of the past year, likewise January, February, and March, in all to the amount of ƒ 1190: 8: 8, included therein ƒ 305: 8:— in extraordinary expenses, together with and alongside a gift to the Naib of Dashtestan, Hasan Ali Beg, amounting to ƒ 322: 16: —, and ƒ 417: 15: 8 in buyout over an attempted extortionate pressing onto the Honorable Company of Persian gold and silver fabrics, inevitably paid off to prevent harmful infractions, all of which on the assumption that no bad treatment was practiced therein, and that thriftiness and the interest of the Honorable Company were indeed respected according to the validity of his comments, has obtained its approval as well as passed, together with that which was given according to custom on the Ramazan festival to Sheikh Maskur and the Shahbandar Haji Ali, to the amount of ƒ 416: 18: —, out of a cost price of ƒ 26: 11: 8. At the often-mentioned Factor's answering of the demand, his request for empty small chests for the procurement of paisa coinage having been reflected upon at the same time, the result of our deliberations held thereon at the said session was such as the contents thereof and the letter of 5 May declare. But on the other hand, one has indeed been able to authorize him for the exchange of 2000 pieces of Spanish dollars and imperial dollars at 9½ mamudis or ƒ 317: 5 3/5 per piece, all the more considering that he would otherwise immediately have had to assess those sought-after species without qualification, so that in case of abundant acquisition and a lack of sufficient funds over there, we shall also, if necessary, support the Factor for that purpose with bills of exchange or a capital of Caboo and more tomans, meanwhile awaiting in reply what success time will show, under further license according to his proposal in the letter of 6 June, if at times not otherwise possible, for the exchange of the full-weight European ducat at 18 mamudis or ƒ 7: 13: —, together with the gold mohurs for 54 mamudis or ƒ 22: 19: —, provided they are found to be of good alloy. And although the Factor in the cited letter dated 5 April does not doubt the sale of the remaining merchandise still in his possession, on account of the permitted sale of some fabrics with a slight price reduction, and also demonstrates a small sale thereof of turmeric and linens to the amount of ƒ 1139: 8: 8, he nevertheless complains heavily in writing of 16 May about the underselling of our antagonists and the spoilation of prices in everything, especially also on the old copper works, concerning which, to his regret, the absolute impossibility was noticed in the frequently mentioned letter of 5 April to procure these galley wares clean and pure in the future for 10 mamudis or ƒ 4: 5. Therefore, in view of the sound reasons cited therein, we agreed on the 27th of the same month to the requested increase of ½ mamudi or ƒ –: 4: 4 on the man of 6¾ lb, and preferred to proceed to that rather than to the other proposed measure of being allowed to charge the Honorable Company for the loss in purifying that mineral etcetera, because more peace of mind seemed to reside in the former than in another advantage, and in the interim we have conformed all the sooner to the already completed purchase of 500 mans at 10¼ mamudis or ƒ 4: 7: 2, the less and more difficultly such is presently to be had for that price, and yet calculated against the man of 6 lb here, it still yields up to 12½ percent. Furthermore, the Factor gives little hope in the aforesaid answer to the respected demand for fulfilling the assigned 100 lasts of wheat, for which reason he made use of our authorization of 6 February for the redirection of half to Basra, and in addition has shown the reasons for the slight likelihood of being able to give satisfaction to that highly regarded requirement and our good expectation, as can be seen more extensively from his letters exchanged back and forth with the Basra ministers on 7 and 28 February of this year, the latter having also further declared themselves to us thereon by letter of 17 March, saying that they could not obtain an unadulterated sort of that grain, as one cannot get it on shipboard, and much less for the price of 8 mamudis per 108 lb, because the best wheat had to come thither from this region and other Persian seaports, etcetera, etcetera. It having furthermore been found necessary according to that estimate to send to the said Commissioner a full sloop's cargo the sooner the better, in proportion to his demand and our stock in order to stimulate the market yonder, having to await the nutmegs from Bassoura as well as the cloves, since those spices are still abundant enough there and here there is also a lack of them, provided that having had from here, God be thanked, Whom we further implore for His sufficient blessing to counteract all disadvantages that have oppressed this directorship for a long time as if inseparable. Regarding various undertakings; this beglerbegi went to the Baluch borders, but fared just as in the enterprise of Muscat as mentioned in the missive of 25 February of the past year, although on 20 January and 22 February thereafter he gave us reason to suspect a better outcome through two separate missives, as we indeed had wished. However, in reply, it was nonetheless not seen to follow in that manner; thus keeping ourselves content that upon a request made to his highness on 5 January, we obtained favorable freedom in reply in the aforementioned last missive, granting the freedom to send out female horses now unmolested. As the kamkalem Sheikh Hadi, in the dispatch of the latest sent ones, went to complain against the supporting documents, maintaining and arguing that in the grand raqam nothing other than rents had been expressed, which indeed would have taken effect if it had been confronted with the old registered one, and if it had been insisted upon that citing an error in the year rendered such a mandate invalid and made the obtained freedom unusable. But this difficulty and disagreement has now been cleared up and settled by the beglerbegi for the time to come, as long as he at least remains in esteem. Furthermore, with regard to his highness and the Netherlandic administration, which for a long time consisted mostly of his own blood relatives, a particularly detrimental concern has now arisen. The royal postilions have been riding back and forth in such haste and anxiety that no one could know how it would ultimately end. Indeed, it was frequently doubted whether one could believe what would happen with Taqi Khan on account of the complaints lodged against him from all sides and made known to the monarch, about what he, during our and the Muscat Arabs', the Baluch chieftains', and the Persian lowland subjects' affairs, had not done, among other things; for these post couriers had repeatedly caused such a suspicion. As a result, we, along with all foreign nations who had dealings with his highness, were uncommonly anxious for the outcome and for news upon which one could finally rely, in order to be able to base subsequent measures accordingly. Meanwhile, various persistent rumors were spread regarding the said Arabs and their design on Julfar, aiming to arrive there by sea power consisting, through the assistance of the Angrian pirates, of 7 ships and some large native vessels, with the intention to defeat the Persians there, and then, without delay, descend upon the King's fleet and ruin everything. With all such circumstances we found ourselves occupied for almost this entire month, and one was unable to comprehend all the threatening dangers or to undertake anything without there being an increased fear of a bad outcome of these rumors, as well as being subject to change. We therefore most humbly beg your Highly Honorable, Valiant, and Grand Worships for your most generous indulgence, should the obliged accuracy of this humble description not have been maintained according to our bounden duty. In the hope of being favorably regarded therein, we shall in humility bring to your esteemed notice that his highness Muhammad Taqi Khan, according to confirmed reports of what was made known in the aforementioned letters from Kerman dated 26 June, and also confirmed on the 10th of this month by the King's courier, was secretly made known to the ruler here, the well-known Aqa Baqir, in favor of that state of affairs fluctuating in apprehension. It has become common knowledge that he has now been received into favor by that sovereign, and at his request has received discharge from the beglerbegiship of the lowlands, and in exchange has been elevated to the first grandee of the realm as Mustawfi al-Mamalik, or comptroller of affairs with foreign powers, having had its direction. Both are nonetheless rather well-disposed temperaments toward the European nations, according to what could be gathered in that regard. It also appears from the last-mentioned advice that a new sea admiral has been appointed in place of the aforementioned Mir Ali Khan, named Muhammad Taqi Khan Mashhadi; in the year 1731 he was beglerbegi in Kerman. His Majesty has also given the dukedom of Fars to one Muhammad Khan Beg, according to that report, taking the post of viceroy away from Riza Quli Mirza, his eldest son, said that informant, and conferring it again upon a younger prince named Nasrullah Mirza, with orders to the latter that he must hold his court in Mashhad. And it was presumed the former would have run the risk of losing his life over the killing of Shah Tahmasp, which, however, is still forbidden to mention.
