In what manner the undersigned have most obediently executed the known order of the Honorable Company and the instructions received on that matter from Your Honorable Worships appears hereby; for, after publication of the recently received placard, the ship 't Hof niet altijd Somer, lying ready to sail for Batavia, was searched as thoroughly as possible in the presence of the provisional fiscal of this Directorate, Willem Allard van Jongstal, but nothing private was discovered therein, even though the same draws 16½ feet forward and 17¾ feet at the sternpost, and furthermore, upon the muster of the crew, no one was found absent. And herewith we remain with all respect, beneath was written: Honorable, worshipful Sir and praiseworthy Commander, lower: Your Honorable Worships' wholly bounden and faithful servants, was signed: F. de Wilt and Willem Slaars. in the middle: In my presence, was signed: Willem Allard van Jongstal. in the margin: Gamron, the 12th of August 1740. lower stood: Agrees, was signed: G. From Persia the 31st of March 1741. Tacki Chan insists again on the Company's vessels for a second expedition, enclosing the voyage, presented to us that we must secure ourselves. What has been passed and contracted is to be found in the resolution of the 26th of September. To set down even a quarter of this here would undoubtedly distaste Your High Noble Great Worships, and therefore we shall humbly take the liberty merely to touch upon the particulars, namely: that the sea admiral Mhamed Tacki Chan beforehand, upon his arrival during the first reciprocal visits, made it his design to enjoy the Company's assistance, and accompanied by the same ships with 19 vessels of various sorts, to advance upon the enemy. His Highness was repeatedly provided with proper replies according to his desires, and among other things, whose refutation was desired, since to decline it was not possible without running a double peril, namely the loss of the King's favor, and the lords and masters' high esteem, he was merely presented with the need to secure us at least in such manner as the condition of the times merited as an obligatory measure, and could provide. It therefore seemed best to keep their requests delayed with promises until one saw whether good tidings of the association of the parties might relieve us, or an opportunity might arise to bring the serdaar to a different opinion, teaching him to consider that with our lords and masters' ships we dared do nothing except what their service or the direst necessity demanded. And although he was now from all matters here and there, through fully convincing tokens, but primarily by Mhamed Tacki Chan, the present grand admiral, calmed in his demonstrated passions, and was thereby at once urged that the assistance of the empire resided with the Honorable Company alone, and on that account at once felt obliged to acknowledge the services that had been rendered, in so far as his blood relation with the monarch and the rate of his character had indeed seemed to allow permit therein, having recommended that a valuable horse—much better than Mhamed Tacki Chan presented to us on the 26th of September last, and in what statious manner—be handed over in person to the authority for the king's actual Naib, Lord Mhamed Backer Beek, which with others up to ambassadors was tabijn or stable-boy's work; so that, if desired, this could be calculated further in the estimates of the 4th of October and the 1st of November regarding those two present horses. Furthermore, after Monsieur Slaars' commission (whose incurred expenses in three voyages amounted to f 311:2:- and whose proceedings were reviewed in the resolution of the 26th of November), the frequently mentioned sardar took a more passable path, of which we were also assured by the Dheriabequie (the sea admiral aforesaid) upon his return with the said Slaars. All efforts being strained on the 21st ditto, and also the Majesty and the service of the Honourable Company were most concerned in restoring the free navigation; trusting that the aforementioned resolutions will also be able to provide satisfaction in proportion to the necessity thereof, sufficiently to command the favor of the regents, we have nevertheless always exerted our utmost best to request the rendered services and thereby simultaneously keep their, the regents', obligations unshakeably secured. It can be firmly established that the fame and glory of the Dutch Noble Company, which has thereby been achieved in Persia and has become éclatant, shall also remain immortal, since their Highnesses have proclaimed this publicly at Congo and here more than once, to the spite of all competitors, and moreover have placed the invincible Sovereign of the Country, as an ally, on an equal footing with the Honourable Company. From Persia, the 31st of March 1741. The trade has not much to show, as the sale of the remaining ordinary goods indicated as of the last of July of the past year up to the last of August did not amount to much, especially in the interior. And regarding the Bengali sample cloths, there were only 15 pieces of silk cuttenies among them; but since there appeared to be the greatest prospect for them in Spahan, and the impossibility of their turnover in an exceptionally profitable manner had been experienced here in Bassoura—ordinary linens excepted—and Boucheer, it was resolved by decree dated the 4th of October past to give circular orders to the servants, both for this reason and concerning all other goods that often remain lying for a long time, to confer with one another regarding the trade. This was done so that, a good outlet having been found, all embarrassment might be prevented and profit might be gained, instead of being subject to loss or spoilage. The servants have already laid the foundations for this matter, as appears from their transmitted copies of letters written to Spahan, namely from Bassoura on the 20th and the last of October, and from Boucheer on the 11th of January last, as well as written from here to the first-named place on the 17th of December. Since, on our part, the necessary instructions were concurrently commended to the ministers at the aforementioned place regarding the Bassoura tolls that might be paid upon return shipment and consequently lost there, as well as to the junior merchant and commissioner at Boucheer, Jacob van Schoonderwoert, by letters of the fifth of May and the 12th of October of the past year, it is to be hoped that by this means something good may come of it in due time, according to our wish. And as soon as we obtain the good fortune of being provided with new merchandise through your High Excellencies' exceedingly great kindness, we shall also, as occasion permits, allocate something again to Spahan upon the residents' requisitions, but nevertheless in such a manner as shall then be planned and as we shall find accountable, and at the same time forward whatever may still remain here of the aforesaid sample cloths. Having in the interim been accommodated with the yearly ledger books concerning each factory's status, account, and report of the trade conducted, expenses incurred, and the remainders of their real assets as of the last of August just passed, and having examined all of them in part with dutiful attention and deliberated thereon upon receipt on the 30th of December—namely, regarding those of Bassoura and Boucheer, as well as those of Spahan on the 18th of January recently passed—the main ledgers were brought to a balance in mid-February thereafter, and also brought into Council for resumption alongside those of the salaries. They were thus placed in a position to combine both through the general comparison exhibited therewith, just as will also appear in what follows, after we first venture, with your High Excellencies' favorable permission, to present a concise summary and at the same time an abstract of our conducted trade, adding thereto from the month of August.
