From Persia under date 21 December 1741. Because terra Casnauw is too high in price and otherwise unobtainable of good quality, its purchase has been suspended; and terra Catechu, which is of better quality, cannot be obtained here for less than the maund for 18 mahmudis or 7 guilders and 13 stivers, so that neither sort can be obtained for such a price as the last-mentioned sort of Catechu was sold for over there, at 3 lb for 12 mahmudis or 5 guilders and 2 stivers. We requested from your Honors, in our humble letter mentioned at the beginning, 300 to 400 tomans under promise to show your Honors by the next opportunity what they are required for, and we now present your Honors, in all submission, with a rough calculation showing that for the requested goods in total 1333. From Persia under date the last of December 1741. ample 610 tomans will be needed, namely: for 15 pieces of gold and silver fabrics for Siam: 260 tomans for 10 pieces of the same for Batavia: 80 tomans for 5400 lb of almonds: 81 tomans for 400 pieces of book covers: 12 tomans for 5 pieces of brocades: 7 tomans for 5 chests of Shiraz wine: 2 tomans for 50 lb of hazelnuts and 20 lb of peaches: 1 toman for 800 lb of pistachios: 9 tomans for 2050 lb of prunellas: 14 tomans for garden shutters: 5 tomans for 20 pairs of slippers: 26 tomans for 5 carpets: 8 tomans Packaging and freight, together with the fact that these goods have no fixed price and may cost more, especially the common goods and fabrics of which the price cannot currently be given with certainty until the delivery takes place, are estimated, together with the oils and drugs, at: 100 tomans Total: 610 tomans From Persia under date the last of December 1741. From which it clearly appears approximately how much those goods will amount to, while, hoping to be well-understood, it is said that it would not be a bad idea if an amount of 40 to 50 tomans more than the indicated sum were drawn up so as not to be left in embarrassment occasionally, in order to be able to pay the permitted expenses. Furthermore, we express our heartfelt thanks for the extract letters received by us with great joy, both addressed to the Noble and Right Honorable the Lords Directors in the beloved Fatherland and to their High Noble Excellencies at Batavia, together with the other enclosures; and we cannot as yet nourish your Honors with good hope regarding the silk trade. Therefore, 1335. From Persia under date 2 December 1741. regarding that point, we refer ourselves most humbly to our previously mentioned humble letter of 23 May, since the news has reached us that the former qurchi-bashi of the King, Ali Quli, has been appointed as overall administrator in his brother's place, and Aqa Muhammad has been made head of the merchants of the entire country, who shall set the price on all goods, both those produced here in Persia and those brought from other places. From Persia under date the last of December 1741. the mustawfi al-mamalik Muhammad Taqi Khan, with the further announcement that Mirza Muhammad Ali Munshi, former First Secretary to His Highness, upon his arrival in this city, has visited this lodge twice; who, having then been entertained according to the custom of the country, departed amicably, and with whom, as he asked us whether we would write a short letter with him to His Highness, this was then effected, consisting of compliments as the copy with the translation will show. Meanwhile we hope to receive your Honors' highly esteemed further orders as to how we shall act with the letters addressed to His aforesaid Highness, both by their High Noble Excellencies and your Honors. It is also rumored that the perpetrator, because the king's runners and military force remained more than two musket shots in front of and behind him, would have presumed, when the king fell with his horse, to come at him to kill him by the sword, but the king, being alert, drew his sword, whereby that bold perpetrator took to his heels and retreated into the aforementioned forest, wherein, being searched diligently, the perpetrator nevertheless was not found. He also had all the troops checked and inspected, but it has not been heard hitherto that he was found after much searching, although His Majesty has sworn that when the perpetrator gives himself up, he will not kill him on account of his courage, but on the contrary will honor him with a great post and 50 tomans. All his grandees of the realm were also summoned to him, all of whom were sharply rebuked by him, asking what he had done to them that they sought his life, and whether they begrudged him being king, and whether any of them were served thereby, etc. But they departed very quietly, under recommendation to bring forward that lad who had dared to shoot at him. But from it Your Honors will gather that the King summoned the first-named, together with Mhamed Hostem Chan and Hadje Sessedien Chan, to him in the manzil Phiroes Koek, honored all three of them with very high offices, and chose them as his imperial councillors in order to apply their intellect to the welfare of the realm. Thus our letter was dispatched with his courier under cover of his brother Ibrahim Beecq, the copy of which, with its translation, is enclosed herewith, trusting that our conduct in this regard will not be disagreeable to Your Honors. Mentioning here the rumors that the king had left his son and former viceroy, Resa Colie Miersa, in Thehran with 12000 men in order to visit the whole country, just as it is also said that he is to come here to Spahan within 2 months, when, after some stay here, he is to undertake his journey to the lowlands; but it is related by some that he will act again as viceroy, although this is not to be believed. From Persia, dated the last of December 1741. not to be believed, yet we have deemed it our duty to communicate this to Your Honors, so that if it should be true, Your Honors might act accordingly. We shall also, if we should learn anything further and more reliable in that regard, give speedy notice. Nothing is heard yet of his intent against the Turk or Muscovite, but as is maintained, it will certainly apply to one of the two, and one will be able to learn this truly within a short time, as we believe. From Persia under date December 1741 presented what has been written in that language concerning the Company's service; and who is in truth of an upright, quiet disposition, upon whom one can rely, and of whom the late deceased Mr. van Leipsigt always spoke with much praise and competence, just as his father instructed the late deceased gentleman for more than 2 years in Persian writing, we do not doubt that Your Right Honourables will grant such permission to take the said Mhamed Resa into service in place of Miersa Lutphola, as we judge this will be best for the Honourable Company, since he, as said, possesses the required competence in the Company's service. The four-monthly extract from the 1347. For the rest, we shall give Your Right Honourables some information regarding news received here since our last dispatch; namely, that rumors have it that the beglerbegi Hattem From Persia under date the last of December 1741 Hattem Chan some time ago made his complaint to the king about the subjects of Faars, and most especially about the family of the Mostafa Elmomaleek, regarding their bad treatment of him, and also that he made known to the king that this occurred through the instigation of Mhamed Tackie Chan himself, just as the incident of the mutinous crewmen had been secretly arranged by Mhamed Tackie Chan; so now, while the king was nearby, a petition was presented to the king by the kadkhodas and principal men of Chiraas and the whole of Faars, wherein they make their complaint about Hattem Chan, that he bears down so hard upon them regarding the king's dues, while they are poor and were not able to satisfy them all at once 1353 From Persia under date the last of December 1741 all at once, for previously they were supported by the rich Tackie Chan, who advanced them their money for that payment, which they then repaid in small amounts; and that on the contrary the present beglerbegi Hattem Chan was a poor man, who could not do such a thing; that the entire land of Faars was dead poor and utterly ruined, and he extorted the dues from them by force; therefore they requested His Majesty to have Miersa Ismael, the brother, or one of the sons of Mhamed Tackie Chan as their governor instead of Hattem Chan. Whereupon they answered that this had occurred during Tackie Chan's time; so the king had the 3 principal of those complainants, namely the kalantar of Chiraas, brother-in-law of Mhamed Tackie Chan, the kalantar of Meris Hadje Abdulla, also a close relative of his, and Sait Matjeex Mohtaseb of Chiraas, put to death, and had an eye put out of Hadje Kastan, kadkhoda of Chiraas.

From Persia under date ultimo December 1741 had gouged out; he also intended to have more than 40 people killed who had signed or sealed the petition, but the mastoffie of Chiraas acquitted them before the King and swore an oath before the King that those people were not to blame, but had been instigated by the deceased, and thus they got off free; it is also reported here, as written from court, that the King reportedly summoned the said miersa Jsmael along with the sons and wife of Fackie chan and the entire family to reside here in Spahan as exiles, leaving the country of Jaars; some say that the King confiscated all the estates of that family and in their place reportedly assigned the ruined villages of Luijaen to them to make those flourish again from their purse; it is also publicly reported here that the King reportedly had mhamed Fackie chan's goods that he had with him attached, and he came very close to losing his head if he had not saved himself before the King by swearing on his Koran that he knew nothing of the matter, nor that he had incited those people who were killed to complain unjustly about Hatten chan, so that from one thing and another it is very noticeable that his power is broken and may well come to a bad end, for that matter is not yet over, and should your Worships learn anything further of it, we shall make the proper and obligated notification known. However, your Worships desire a satisfactory answer regarding the 280 Uh:o which reportedly had been advanced to the fabric weaver by the said Mr. Mattheus van Lijpzig according to his Honour's writing in the letter of the 30th of June 1739; to which we cannot give your Worships any other answer than has been done by us, for we have questioned Elias Sahid and the broker's brother Missie Das on this matter again as to whether they also knew on what the deceased had advanced those moneys, since such could not happen without their knowledge, or how the matter stood, for his Honour had written that they had been advanced to the fabric weaver; whereupon the broker said that he did not know what the late Mr. van Lijpzigh had written, but that he declared before God and knew well, just as Hadje Reza declared to us, that the deceased had not given him any

From Persia under date of the last of December 1741 had not advanced any money beforehand, but around that time had paid some debts, such as to the Banyan Bessentrads Naring and Pretendas, Nacha Morwarie, and Aga Thaan, uncle of Welie Mhameds Albeschik, which three promissory notes together amount in principal to a sum of 230 tomans, as can be verified from the forwarded writings, and of which mention was made in our humble missive of 4 July and 8 December of the past year addressed to his Right Honourable and Council in reply to their Right Honourables' writing. To that end, we have presented to them whether they could verify under oath that they know nothing of those funds, or that they have not enriched themselves therewith, which was then carried out by them in an annexed copy of a sworn declaration granted in that regard. I also presented to the last-mentioned how he could be so careless as to have signed the letter without reading it, whereupon he said that the gentleman of Leipzig had merely ordered him to sign without letting him read it, and that the deceased had never given him any counsel regarding one thing or another. We shall furthermore not fail to address the letters to your Right Honourable with a flying seal, and to transmit them under cover of the Political Council, as is now done in all humility, and we express our gratitude to your Right Honourable for the communication. It caused us sorrow to perceive your Right Honourables' displeasure and the notion that we had, contrary to your Right Honourables' orders, presented a petition to the monarch, or had had this done by the Lord Nabab. Regarding the silk trade, we can still assure you that we have spoken of nothing further concerning that matter with the Lord Nabab Miersa Ibrahim or with any others, than what we made known to your Right Honourables in our humble letter of 8 December. For we, as little as your Right Honourables, had thought that that gentleman, upon the points of our request cited in our humble letter of 8 December, would have taken such a course as has occurred to your Right Honourables' displeasure, since he was not even requested to solicit such from the King, nor was it by any means said that we had powers in hand, as he mentioned in the petition; for we well know that we are not capable of such without your Right Honourables' prior or obtained permission. Likewise, nothing else was asked and requested of the Lord Nabab than solely that he would be pleased to write to us whether it would be possible to trade in that yarn, and how the contract stood with the Russian in that yarn, in order to give notice thereof to your Right Honourables. Therefore, we wish to hope that your Right Honourables will not be pleased to regard us as such who oppose orders or write untruths to your Right Honourables, but rather as those who seek in all respects, according to duty and to the utmost of their ability, to give satisfaction to the same. And from the request together with the raqam, which was found not to have been drawn up to your Right Honourables' satisfaction, your Right Honourables can indeed think and be firmly assured that it was not dared by us, nor would such expressions as are cited therein ever be used, as has now occurred to our regret and your Right Honourables' great displeasure. The Lord Nabab has only first maturely considered and examined old precedents as to how one had to proceed therewith, and has also taken care to the best of his ability that a good and advantageous marginal order followed thereon. Furthermore, we express our humble thanks for the favorable approval regarding what was presented to His Highness Lord Abbol Hassan Chan and other grandees of the realm, with repeated assurances that we were in all things as frugal in the distribution as was possible, and as stated in our modest letter of 18 June, we would never have proceeded to such expenditures if necessity had not required it and their requests to receive gifts could no longer be refused, just as the requested confectionery was likewise unavoidable. However, we shall seek to prevent such expenditures by all possible means, and the persons to whom they are delivered will also be carefully considered. Likewise, we offer your honors our most humble words of thanks for passing the three-monthly specifications of the months of March, April, and May, as well as for the approval of the account of the expenses incurred for repairs to this lodge and bathhouse. However, that the declaration concerning the last-mentioned bathhouse was not sent off, or that no notice was given of that dilapidated state in our very humble letter of 23 May, was caused by great haste, as we thought the dispatch of that letter with the enclosed regam required speed, and for which error we most humbly beg pardon, with the promise that such shall not happen again in the future so as to prevent your honors' displeasure. Although, to our regret, nothing has been heard here for a long time concerning the situation in Europe, and no news has been brought via Muscovy because the resident of the Russian nation who was formerly here is at court or with the King, some say that he has obtained his dismissal and departed for his country. Some days ago letters from Amsterdam via Gilan over Muscovy were brought here for an Armenian named Godjana Zaret, and at that time we asked him whether he had received any news, either of the war or otherwise, who said no, that nothing of one or the other had been written to him, and his letter was over 10 months old.
