From Persia, under date the last of December 1742. for the main office must be credited; furthermore, heartily desiring along with this their speedy arrival and profitable distribution of the goods that can find no use in meritable gifts, to hear of it hereafter, and also at last to see from Your Honours fulfillment of the feared requisition concerning the respective indents, besides that which was recently written repeatedly from here for observation and guideline. Whereas on the 10th of this month, upon the happy arrival of the yacht ship Redderskerk from the main place, we learned among other highly esteemed remarks of the increase of a feared war between the crowns of France, England, and Spain, not without presumption that Their High Mightinesses, our sovereign, were about to meddle therein, and concerning which we continue to desire from God the most salutary outcome for the welfare of the commonwealth. Since Your Honours might now from time to time over Muscovy, either through the resident of that nation or other trustworthy friends, be further assured of how matters stand in Europe, it serves our purpose that this, and also the most essential news of the realm, be brought to our knowledge; rumors here concerning the latter suggesting that the Persian Majesty might possibly already have approached the Turkish lands; being minded in such a case immediately via Bushire to Basra with one or two of the best company servants in a very covered or secret manner to give notice beforehand; which weighty point Your Honours are once and for all ordered hereby to observe well. For the rest, we refer to what was recently written and recommend to the two last-mentioned Messieurs Busskens and Van der Wall to seal this again after perusal and to direct it with their letters towards Isfahan, also having it carried forward by this present or another courier. Also beforehand, and out of consideration to let not the slightest unpleasantness take root between the Honorable Company and His Highness the Nabob as far as possible, it was resolved to qualify Your Honours to employ 10 or at most 20 tomans for the lifting of the King's original raqam, well understood if you are upon the arrival of this still of the opinion that such cannot be avoided; nevertheless, we deem it advisable that it could well be waited with until the return of the interpreter David Sahid from the camp if that can be done, since it can then best be seen and consulted together whether obtaining it is still necessary as before, and in what manner it may serve to preserve that powerful lord. In the interim, we strongly long for the outcome of the said interpreter's mission to the Mustawfi al-Mamalik, His Highness Muhammad Taqi Khan, concerning which we will continue to hope for the best for the service of the Noble Company; the travel money given to him up to 2,500 mahmudis and further conditions being regarded as necessary according to the circumstances of the time; not doubting that Your Honours will have proper account of everything rendered by him, and if possible also have indication made in a special report of the manner in which his expedition to the court began and ended; which will hopefully serve much for the good of the well-mentioned His Highness's powerful favor, for the preservation of which no occasion must be neglected by Your Honours to attract what is necessary through a polite correspondence; the letters sent to him on the 16th of September being very well framed, and we also see from his missive nothing but a special high esteem for the Honorable Company, the duration of which he wishes may remain unalterable. However, as we are disposed to question him further upon his return, we shall make no further mention of these objectionable proceedings, but further express our astonishment over the rash drawing of bills of exchange, as appears to us from the aforementioned secret letter to the amount of 49 tomans, which was done without Your Honors' license, not having awaited Your Honors' answer to what was written by him on date 9 November of the past year and the request made therein to be assisted with some further funds to make his disbursements, as it then followed that Your Honors sent him 12 tomans to be able to raise them from a banyan there in Shamaghy in case of extreme distress. From Persia under date Ultimo December 1741 given, we shall ship those goods thither at the first upcoming shipping opportunity, in order, in case the same cannot be entirely disposed of there, to take in that event the most advantageous route for the Honorable Company's interest with the surplus, according to the highly respected Gamron orders, and to send the same on to the Honorable Gentlemen or our highly esteemed main office; and if the prices should not change for the better before shipment or after the Arab turmoil, for which in short, regarding the remaining Bengal sample cloths here, the prospect seems to present itself, considering the letters recently received by the regents via the route of Hawiza From Persia under date Ultimo December 1741. Hawiza from Baghdad assure us that Ahmed Pasha is marching down from there with his formidable army against the rebellious Arabs who have caused so much fear to the surrounding country folk and this place, and that the same, out of fear thereof, are already preparing for their flight, the remainder to be seen from an extract of the letter dispatched to Gamron on the 1st of February last, to which we kindly refer, and further report that in addition thereto, for Your Honors' information, three extracts of letters are dispatched concerning what has been written about the sale of linens, namely two from our writings from here to Gamron and Boucher under date 15 December last past, and 1245. Pious and discreet sirs, Your Honors' highly esteemed letter of 17 April has been delivered to us on the 9th of this month by the Honorable Company's courier Ambersia, in good order, along with the royal edicts and their translation previously requested by your Honors' kindness. And as we have now found the opportunity to dispatch the same to your Honors via Bandar Bushehr, we shall now serve you in reply and report that we have learned from your Honors' writing, to our particular regret, of the poor prospects presenting themselves at your end regarding the so highly desired outlet and sale of certain coarse linens that have been lying in the Honorable Company's warehouse for a long time without demand. It is therefore heartily to be wished that, in accordance with the favorable prospects obtained regarding this from Bushehr, these matters may in time have better success there, which we also deeply hope for the true interest of the Honorable Company. It grieves us that such a raqam as was previously reported here was not held there, since a copy of it might otherwise have served us well against the claims of the Honorable Company's deceased broker, previously made known to your Honors. Regarding this unjust Persian, we inform your Honors that he recently appeared here with the envoy of the governor of Hawizeh to collect his claim. And after causing much trouble and headache to us and to the present city regent, he allowed himself to be satisfied by the regents and by us with the payment of 90 tomans from the deceased's estate for his claim of 133 tomans. Yet a few days later, when he was to receive the money and issue a receipt for it, he still attempted to get the expenses of his accompanying muhassil or envoy of the governor of Hawizeh paid in addition. As this was not granted to him by the regents, he thereupon departed again for Hawizeh without having accomplished his business, and from where we expect him back here shortly. We shall then, by means of the obtained raqams, also make an end with that troublesome fellow and his affair, or else write about it to the governor of Hawizeh, which we would have done long ago and thereby brought an end to that affair, were it not that we are well aware that without a small gift nothing is to be gained or accomplished with Persian as well as Turkish regents. Thus it has remained undone until today, since we still nourish the hope that the matter can still be settled without that. For the friendly notice that our previous letter to your Honors would be sent in copy to Gamron upon our request, we are particularly obliged to your Honors, and no less for the news of the realm so favorably shared with us. From Persia under date ult=o December 1741 had come to satisfaction, although we noticed Your Honorable Worships would rather have preferred that we had not spoken with the lord Nabab Mirza Ibrahim about that point before we had first taken counsel with Your Honorable Worships therein, for which we beg for pardon with the assurance that in the future we shall speak with no one about such matters without Your Honorable Worships' foreknowledge, but will always guide ourselves according to Your Honorable Worships' honored commands. Furthermore we express hearty thanks to Your Honorable Worships for the sent translation of the Persian petition presented by Your Honorable Worships to the King of these lands, and we wish from all our heart From Persia under date ult=o December 1741 wish that a desired apostil may be obtained upon the same, and the Company's many rendered services and suffered damages might at last be acknowledged according to justice, wherefore we pray to God Almighty. We shall also with all prudence watch the doings of the Russian and other European nations; but of the first-mentioned we can presently inform Your Honorable Worships nothing else than that the news has spread here that the Tsarina of Muscovy died some time ago, and her sister's little son was appointed in her place, wherefore the resident of that nation who was here held a feast with the discharge of various sorts of fireworks, and on the 19th of February departed for the court, 1275. From Persia under date the last of December 1741. His Highness Mohamed Taqi Khan, according to rumors running here, will stay no longer than at most 15 days in Tehran, because His Majesty will march against the Lezgins. According to what we have learned, it is not as convenient for His Highness the Etimad-ud-Daula as some express, but through his continuous expenditures he manages to keep things going. Yet we cannot rightly say whether all this is the truth, and we, according to our humble judgment, subject to the esteemed favorable interpretation of Your Honorable Worships, cannot believe that the King will pay off nothing of the debt of 17,000 tomans, or 1,000 tomans yearly. And His Highness Mohamed Taqi Khan, being heard to be very fearful of the King, it remains to be seen whether he will ever dare to present this to His Majesty, since no ship has arrived (for, according to Monsieur David, it was agreed with Mohamed Taqi Khan that if a ship were presented to the King, he would pay off the said 1,000 tomans yearly). Furthermore, since the King is continually at war, one cannot know whether he will be able to sustain it for long, as he is now again about to march against the Lezgins. Therefore we most humbly beg Your Honorable Worships for pardon that we, according to our humble conscience, maintain concerning this matter that it is currently no time to proceed with that request before one has learned the outcome of his undertaking against the Lezgins. However, the Minab debt, according to our humble understanding, spoken in hope of favorable interpretation, could not suffer any harm if a raqam were obtained from the King authorizing His Highness Kalb Ali Khan to collect those moneys in order to hand them over to Your Honorable Worships there; but since this prince, as one hears, gladly wants to take much yet wants to give little, and we do not doubt that such a raqam could be obtained if a gift were presented to one and another. If Your Honorable Worships will then be pleased to order us, we will await Your Honorable Worships' ever honored orders, just as we then hope to be honored with those so highly respected commands, in order to get hold of the royal raqam through the brother of the said gentleman, Nawab Mirza Abdulla, although such cannot possibly take place without a gift: namely to the gentleman His Highness Mirza Abdulla and His Highness's factotum and privy councilor Aqa Sayyid; His Highness the chief raqam-writer of the King, Mehdi Khan, and his factotum and spy Aqa Ali. Requesting therefore that Your Honorable Worships be pleased to permit us to honor those gentlemen and well-meaning good friends of the Company with a gift, and also to provide us with Your Honorable Worships' honored orders as to how far we may proceed, for the gift has not yet been discussed with those gentlemen, but as we estimate, approximately 150 to 160 tomans in general will be required. Furthermore, we most humbly request Your Honorable Worships to be pleased to provide us with 300 to 400 tomans, so that we may not fall into embarrassment to satisfy the worthy petition, as at present only 200 tomans remain in our treasury, from which 100 tomans have already been advanced to the fabric weaver, who has also delivered 3 pieces, with 4 more pieces to be delivered shortly, just as work has also begun on the 8 remaining for Siam and 10 for Batavia.
