From Persia under date 31 October 1742 had, that he would present and take care of the same himself, so that he, David, might obtain a desired result thereby; yet that interpreter rejected all the good offers and in everything conducted himself as an unworthy servant of the Honorable Company. For it is solely through his doing that the silk raqam is once again, as before, of no use, because the most important points were again omitted therein, which was, however, the principal reason why that interpreter had been sent to court. It also causes us no small reflection that such a noteworthy document has not been registered according to the custom of the country, nor validated with the seals of the secretaries. It is true that it is adorned with the sovereign's seal as well as that of the First Royal Scribe, yet had it been properly registered, there ought to have been at least 8 to 10 signets upon it. For this reason, we cannot value that raqam as anything higher than a demonstration of favor from the sovereign, without consequence, which he often grants to some of his flatterers to drive their money into his purse, for such raqams expire, so to speak, as soon as they are written, and they were invented for nothing else than to scrape money together and to mislead naive petitioners so that they should have a high opinion of the sovereign's favor, whereas in truth it amounts to nothing, as we firmly assume to be the case with what we obtained. Therefore, the commander put to the vote whether the expenses incurred by the lazy interpreter David Salud, amounting to ro2490 - ƒ1780: 15:—, should be credited to him 495 From Persia under date 31 October 1742 or not. From Persia under date 3 October 1742 also already that Spahan has been reported, and whereas by this item the aforesaid gift horse provides the stable at Spahan with a richness of animals, namely with 8 horses, where the ordinary number has been only 4, it has been approved here to order Aalmis to, in the first place, dispose of 3 of those animals so that no unnecessary feed or other stable expenses may be spent on them any longer; item, that by the first caffilah or another secure occasion he shall have to send the aforesaid gift horse hither, as we presume this to be an exceptionally fine beast and good for the Jaffanapatnam stud farm, which, if upon arrival it turns out according to our thoughts, will also be sent thither. Meanwhile, note is also made here that all the goods dispatched from there by kaffilah on date 6 April last, amounting to ƒ7270:1:—, were duly brought here in good condition on 26 May, for which aforementioned amount that office has also been credited, but on the other hand has been debited again for such 8000 mamudis, ƒ4000:—:—, as were assigned on us by bill of exchange on date 14 March, and which funds were also promptly paid on the due date to the holder, the Banyan merchant Lileram 499 From Persia under date 31 October 1742 Lileram Gera, just as shall also be acted upon presentation with another said bill of exchange amounting to 9106 mamudis at ƒ3870:1:—, likewise granted on us by those Residents on date 6 April last in favor of the Banyan merchant Dergag Saloedja; but whereas this drawing of bills of exchange gives us a bad impression concerning the Residents and their conduct, because these 2 bills of exchange amount to twice as much as the goods received by caffilah total; item, we find in their forwarded cash account nor letters any mention whether the merchandise brought there in the month of October amounting to ƒ25008:3:8 is sold or unsold, and which latter one would have to presume, if one is to give credit to the Residents' writings that the Banyan Wissendas would have had so much trouble gathering the funds for the expenses of the month of March, whereas otherwise the merchandise is surely worth money and they would not have had so much work to obtain so little money as is required for the daily expenses. After all these reasons and motives had been considered with attention by everyone of the council, From Persia under date 31 October 1742 considered, it was resolved in this regard to accept beforehand, as said, the second bill of exchange for the preservation of the Honorable Company's respect and credit for this time, with the instruction that after this they shall never draw any bill of exchange without our consent, but that they will now have to give a satisfactory answer in fact concerning the Honorable Company's cash, trade, and further condition, because in case of default or negligence of that order, it would compel us to send someone thither as soon as possible to obtain at last a proper insight into the Honorable Company's situation there, and at the same time to put the entangled estate of Van Leypzigh on a proper footing, for our preservation so as not to be plunged into the pit of misfortune ourselves by such management. From Persia under date 31 October 1742 Mhamet Tackie Chan, having been at the evening meal, when among other friendly and indeed noteworthy discourses (which, insofar as they concern the interests of the Honorable Company, have been noted and described separately) came to speak about the silk trade, which the Honorable Company would readily offer again in these lands if it should accord with the pleasure of His Persian Majesty; namely, if the Honorable Company might obtain this royal favor freely and frankly, without payment of imposts, gifts, etc., for its suffered damages and manifold services to the crown. And thus, among other things, having also spoken regarding the former prerogatives concerning that trade and the annual recognition, it was also offered and positively promised by his said Highness that, if we wished to see the said prerogative gladly restored again, we should let him know, whereupon, upon the departure of a chappar to the camp, he would petition His Majesty for its renewal and bring about the fiat thereon. And since this was a weighty point, likewise a matter of very far-reaching outlook and consequence, he, the Commander, after having well weighed and re-weighed everything, had deemed it expedient to commit his humble thoughts on the matter to paper, to the end that the same might be attentively read and re-read, as well as considered and weighed by each member, whether this proposal could be accepted or whether it ought to be rejected; requesting at the same time that the combined members, either in writing or orally, whenever they thought they had a better comprehension or concept of this delicate point, would please make it known candidly, in order then jointly to devise the most salutary measures for the welfare of the Honorable Company. Whereupon the following remonstrance was presented for exhibition and resumption, which reads verbatim: Remonstrance by the undersigned Provisional Commander concerning the delicate point of the silk trade in the Persian Empire, presented to the collective members of the Gamron Political Council. Gentlemen and Good Friends, In my visit paid on the 5th of this month in the evening to His Highness the Beglerbegi of these lower lands, Mhamet Tackie Chan, after I had made some requests in the Persian tongue concerning the service of the Honorable Company, namely the restitution of the shipwrecked vessel Ridderskerk along with some merchandise remaining therein, likewise payment for the equipment goods forcibly taken away by Imom Werdie Chan, and that the Ninauwsche debt as well as the 17000 thamashof debt might be settled once and for all, because otherwise it was impossible for the Honorable Company to linger here any longer without obtaining any fruit or recognition for so many and manifold services to the crown, but would be forced to abandon not only Gamron but the entire Persian Empire; meanwhile complaining severely about the suffered insults, affronts, and acts of violence in the abduction and retention of the ships De Ketel and Ridderskerk, inflicted upon us first by Duke Jmom Werdie Chan along with Alie Sulthoen, Seyf Volla Beeq, and Miersa Montusa, but after the death of that Duke, by the Dukes Moesaffar Alie Chan and Alie Werdie Chan, along with the aforementioned Alie Sulthoen, for transport to Sind (as is shown further and in more detail, together with the reply of the said Duke Mhamet Tackie Chan, by me to the gentlemen collectively in a separate relation in the form of a daily register); the same came to ask me whether the silk ragam obtained by him had been received and whether it was to my liking. 511 From Persia, dated 31 October 1742 we could otherwise accomplish nothing with the said regam and it could also be of no use to us, whereupon one Mirza Mousa, writer to His Highness, joined the discourse and began to relate with very many details that in his time the Honourable Company had conducted the free trade in silk with the court under certain conditions and had given large presents annually for it. Upon this, His Highness gave to understand that he also knew this full well, asking me in the meantime whether it would not be better that he should arrange for the old firmans granted in this regard by Shah Sultan Hossein, provided that we then also renewed the annual recognition stipulated therein, handed over according to agreement. At the same time (though veiled, however) they resolved that the silk trade would not make much progress or be conducted peacefully, but would create very many obstacles and hindrances for us, asking in the meantime whether we would show him a regam that speaks of this free trade, so that he, being a true friend of the Honourable Company, might support us with advice, as he acknowledged that for the much friendship he, the duke, had enjoyed from our High and Mighty Lords and from us, he also found himself obliged to repay that according to his ability with friendship and gratitude, etc. For which affection I thanked him cordially, with the further request that the same might not diminish, but increase and grow daily, as we on our side would always contribute whatever was possible to give His Highness reason for full satisfaction. Whereupon he declared that he did not doubt this and that we could also be completely assured of his readiness in the service of the Honourable Company, and that he would see to it that the monies for the equipage goods and minauw were paid and the loss suffered with the ship compensated through His Majesty's royal favour, with the further addition that I should draw up a petition concerning this loss suffered, how it was caused, and by whom so much violence, etc., was done to us, and hand it to him, whereupon he would take care of its proper delivery, since a chappar was due to be dispatched hither within one or two days. With a further reminder concerning the silk trade that I From Persia, dated 31 October 1742 must now fully declare how I would like to have it, as he would direct that according to my wish and pleasure; for which affection I expressed profound thanks to His Grace and promised that I would draw up a petition and show it to him, and also that I would then further declare myself concerning the delicate point and the silk trade. And since it is now precisely the right time, as we have suffered so much damage and violence with respect to the realm, to request in return some advantageous privileges, I therefore find myself highly obliged to ask all the members for their opinion on the subject matter, either in writing or verbally, after I have first frankly declared my duty so far as my humble capacity and acquired experience in this matter support me and what I feel about this. The former commander Carel Koen and council expressed their humble thoughts in a letter addressed to Their Right Honours on 4 April 1737 concerning the execution of the silk contract in the following manner: The most humble request and report of the success of our undertaking with the beglerbegi, we may here provisionally make known our simple joy regarding the taking effect of the great mandate of liberty, including the right to negotiate freely to the amount of twenty thousand tomans or 8½ tons of treasure, and that having obtained it under the condition that the delivery of silk and recognition is reciprocally abolished. The remark regarding the fine spun yarn will, upon reflection and our dutiful consideration with the ancient orders, apparently give no satisfaction at first sight, because it is explicitly stated in the issued orders that it has never been the intention, nor ever will be, to abandon that entirely, etc. But if one may consider that in place of the decline of that trade, this recognition is also gained, which at present would amount to circa 600 tomans or ¼ ton, it would have to be considered a great fortune, such a

From Persia under date 31 October 1742 to secure such a large quantity of the best sort of silk that after deduction of all heavy charges customarily and inevitably placed thereon that profit would balance the currently gained quarter ton. Whereupon the Junior Merchant and head of Isfahan, the late Mattheus van Lypsigh, in his letters of 11 June following, comes to declare himself: From the extract of Your Honors' letter sent per Rithem to Batavia, it has appeared to our particular obligation what Your Honors are pleased to feel concerning the lapsed silk contract in consideration of the harmful recognitie, regarding which, certainly in our humble opinion, very well-founded reasoning has been made, although by the said Their High Excellencies it might sometimes be considered as some breach in the prerogatives and therefore they might sometimes not be pleased to consent thereto. For that reason, that matter should indeed not be set aside, and having thus well considered that case, we can on that account express ourselves no otherwise than that, assuming the annulment of the said agreement might be regarded by the said Their High Excellencies as an infraction of the privileges, the same came about in no way from our side, but was by the monarch's own pleasure, or to say better, his interest in the delivery of that spun yarn, since according to the agreement, following the current price here, losing 2400 tomans or ƒ 102000:-:- on the 100 cargas, was by no means found to be such, so that we made humble mention thereof in our latest of 14 April. And now suppose that Nadir Shah, paying no heed to his own loss, which however would be very uncommon, had confirmed the contract just as it was, what troubles would one not have had to receive that spun yarn, not even to speak of the quality, but now that so little trade of the Honorable Company is conducted, against which, upon non-acceptance, the handing over of the recognitie goods would have had to follow without delay, which certainly to the Honorable Company From Persia under date 31 October 1742 would have resulted in great disadvantage, unless it could happen with merchandise, and what price would the great man himself not set upon that, not only to recover the loss, but also to have a good profit on top of it, and what would then become of commerce; we firmly maintain that the same would thus lie entirely in ruins. For those reasons it must now be considered an exceedingly great fortune to be freed from it until such time as Their High Excellencies might nevertheless be pleased to order that the same contract be reinstated. It obliged us, as well as the received 3 1/8 lb sample of silk, to request a further and positive order regarding this weighty point by letter with the ship Thuys te Foreest dated 31 December 1737 in two different places, see: Having thus obtained from that place nothing else than 3¾ lb of silk instead of 3 5/8 lb (which is due to the difference in the mithqals) for mahmudis 64 or ƒ 27:4:— and of which, according to the more detailed estimate of 13 July, now half, as well as a large amount from what has of old remained here, in order that, as was complied with in the transactions under the state article, it may be set down, hoping to be honored with Your High Excellencies' revered command as to how we may and must conduct ourselves. Extract from as even: we shall further mention regarding the prerogatives that in respect of the silk contract we have not well dared to undertake making a positive request, partly because of an existing apprehension that then perhaps the From Persia under date 31 October 1742 recognitie might be demanded upon its reinstatement, and partly because, according to the Isfahan comparison obtained with the price of silk and the course thereof in the mother country, upon examination here, we believe we would incur more loss than profit. From Persia under date 31 October 1742 that the gentlemen masters are inclined to resume the silk trade in the Persian empire, you were therefore most earnestly recommended to take care of it, and such being feasible upon or according to the old contract or firman, reflection will have to be made upon the previous prices during the purchase, and thereby such a good assortment obtained as the just-mentioned extract requires. However, in case they should not wish to permit the Company this trade in silk on the old footing, but force it to renew the firman by the power of money, you will at least have to seek to direct it such that the purchase to satisfy the present homeland demand be permitted for this single time, in order to be able to experience whether benefits can now be obtained from the trade, unless your honors should see themselves absolutely forced to the aforesaid renovation, in which case it will have to be taken into close observation whether, after the uncertain state of the Persian Empire and in proportion to the prices for which a purchase would presently have to take place, this trade will indeed be able to outweigh the costs that would have to be incurred in such a manner, in which case you are hereby qualified to cause the old license in this matter to be renewed by a firman of the present King for such a civil sum as is ever possible. Yet before receipt of this honored order, we replied in the margin to the Honorable Highly Esteemed Gentlemen and Masters regarding Their Honors' esteemed homeland demand for the year 1738 in such manner as appears from the extract inserted here below. Demand 517 From Persia Under date 31 October 1742 With our humble last letter we added via the Huys te Foreest 3 1/4 lb of silk, namely 2 lb which has remained here since the year 1695/96 under the names sjarbafsie, and 1 1/4 lb or also half of that which was sent hither on our request on 11 June of the past year by the servants from Spahan, together with a complete report of the present prices, with their letters still obtained after that date under No. 22 and 73. Our bold, humble report was attached to the end that, before one might touch anything upon a good opportunity, we might have obtained the honor of a gracious instruction how to conduct ourselves regarding such a capital point, and whether in these times we may work on it according to the honored remarks in the year 1733, or rather look on a little until the Empire presents itself in a firm countenance. After this we had the honor to receive yet further and more explicit orders from Their Honorable Highly Esteemed Gentlemen and Masters contained in their esteemed demand of returns for the year 1739, together with the aforementioned positive order from Their High Honors on 3 March of the said year, the order of the gentlemen superiors and our dutiful humble reply thereto of date 14 May in the year 1739 reading thus: Demand From Persia under date 31 October 1742 Demand of Persian silk: Because we have seen ourselves honored with a long instruction regarding how we may and must conduct ourselves concerning the silk trade, we have therefore, after attentive deliberation taken on date 12 March last or just after the receipt of the highly revered order, dispatched the necessary measures together with the extracts of the venerated orders relative thereto by letter of the 23rd following to the servants at Spahan, and whereby they were clearly and distinctly ordered how they will have to act concerning this delicate point, to be seen more broadly by the copy thereof, annexed to our humble letters of today's date directed in all respect to Their High Honors at Batavia. However, as not the least reply has been obtained from Spahan concerning this weighty matter up to today, we are as yet unable to supply Your Honorable Rigorous Highly Esteemed a true report of how far the servants' proceedings concerning its procurement may have been pursued. We do not doubt, however, that we shall shortly be informed of how matters stand therewith, in order to be able to give the most dutiful notice thereof, as we also trust in our heart that we will be deemed worthy of a gracious approval from Your Honorable High Esteemed, that we have not worked towards this delicate matter before the receipt of the confirmation of the previous prerogatives, this one excepted as having been abolished together with the annual recognition, in the manner we have respectively represented it by humble missives on 24 September 1737 with an appendix of 31 January 1738 sent thereafter towards Batavia, and also most dutifully effected by our humble marginal reply to the venerated formal demand of the year 1738 under the ultimate of April of the same year, humbly begging to be held obediently recommended to that and to the present outgoing letter to the well-mentioned High Indian Government, with prayer to God that we become partakers of the fortune to be able to look after the interests of Your Honorable High Esteemed in the said trade, as it is our sole aim and soul's thorough desire, the more so because through it many money losses might be recouped. 519 From Persia under date 31 October 1742 12 March the Isfahan servants by our outgoing letter of 23 there asking their opinion in sincere terms see below So have we, considering the importance of both the one and the other, on the 12th of this month in Council, decided beforehand on the most important points and towards the fullest possible satisfaction of the delicate requisition of the 20000 lb of silk, to first demand of you a sincere declaration concerning the present prospects of that trade, in order then, if advisable and justifiable, to positively and most earnestly recommend you to fulfill that renewed homeland demand according to the literal sense and desire, in a prompt manner satisfying the objective of the Lords Masters, with the sort mentioned therein and no other, to the utmost of your power at the earliest, sending for that purpose herewith the renewed homeland extract demands of sales of the year 1737 and material from the highly esteemed Batavia letter among others relative thereto, expecting that you, as honor-loving servants, will add satisfaction to both matters through an obligatory and prudent care the sooner the better, having further to employ close attention not to accept any bad goods, as that which we previously received from you and have sent back to Batavia was declared completely defective by a connoisseur there, according to the evidence of the copy of the report obtained thereof and accompanying herewith, to which we refer ourselves with the further honored remarks herein. The servants thereupon coming to reply in their response dated 29 April in the following manner: that we shall solely report concerning the principal main matters, such as the silk trade etc., Persia Under date 31 October 1742 From report, that regarding this we have not judged it advisable that we should disclose anything to the government here, because without doubt some objection would be encountered in that regard, since the mandates would have to be brought forward for examination, when, the postponing of that trade by the Nadir Shah being evident, the governor Abol Hassan Khan perhaps would not dare to meddle therein and thus that affair could easily not be kept hidden by the Persian, so that if the Russian got wind of it, that nation, trading mostly in that yarn, would oppose it not a little to prevent such by all means; wherefore, in our humble opinion, though respectfully submitting ourselves to your much more penetrating judgment, the safest course is, in that case, to petition directly to the viceroy Reza Qoli Mirza; and although it is also to be feared that he sometimes might not wish to consent thereto without previously obtained license from his lord father, it would nevertheless, by the giving of a reasonable present, at least for a single price, as the Company's trade is not otherwise to be exported from these lands, be obtainable until such time as one sees what turn affairs in this empire will have taken, when, the desired profits being found with that trade, the agreement can be made for the future; although the sort of Lessie Serbaffie (which must surely be Rasht sherbaffi) now requested from the dear fatherland, being the very best occurring in the province of Gilan and consequently being like the Cabessa sort, differs much in quality for the better compared to the former with which the Company used to trade with the Persian court, wherefore there is also a difference in the price, so that we gave a separate report from here under date 11 June 1737 of that yarn; meanwhile, if desired, without making requests to the court about it, the demanded parcel of 20000 pounds could indeed through Banyan merchants, though not without advance payment of money, be procured in 3 to 4 trips and further be sent under the names of Moors, Banyans, or others, with payment of road tolls etc. to your parts or even to Basra for 521 From Persia under date 31 October 1742 for shipment, if, firstly, no embroilments are to be feared in your parts with the beglerbegi, who will have full knowledge of his doubts regarding the annulment of the silk contract and also that that trade must be conducted with no other than the court, and secondly, that the same in such manner via one or the other route be profitable for the Company, regarding which we shall then await your honored orders in order to guide ourselves most obediently thereafter; but to take the quiet path in this case is, in our humble opinion, best to request it of the court, since only after two months will it be time to make the purchase at Rasht, and concerning that trade between this and the Russian court we must still say that a certain credible Armenian merchant upon our inquiry into how matters stood there, with a request for secrecy, told us that the agreement between the present king of these lands, Nadir Shah, and the Muscovite court allows the merchants mutually to bring in and export all sorts of merchandise without paying any tolls and duties; but that this monarch has secretly compelled the Armenian merchants who trade in Muscovy, in order to remain free of all chicanery, to transport the silk in his name to Russia, provided they pay into his treasury the tolls etc. that they would otherwise have to pay in Russia, just as the other Gilan merchants also sell that thread to the Russians for such a price, and that which is still wholly hidden from that nation; and upon receipt of your order on this, we shall not fail to employ close attention with traders of that yarn to receive or secure the same in sound goods and the desired sort, as it has pleased you to prescribe to us at large, which

From Persia, dated 31 October 1742. Which answer, along with their reported fear of daring to trade publicly therein, as well as the proposal made to trade therein clandestinely, obliged us, in accordance with the aforesaid demand, to submit these following remarks to their Honorable, Right Honorable Respects. After this humble reply was placed under its proper number among the further annexes, an Isfahan letter of 29 April of the past year, received on this date, presented several grievances concerning the silk trade in respect of two principal points. Next to a humble offer of a copy thereof in similar respect, we decorously present the same here, consisting in how the Residents there now found themselves at a loss, as it appears to us, especially to avoid toll dues, in order not to make the Honorable Company subject thereto, by sending the silk under other merchants' names via Bouchir and Bassoura hither. This, being unable to remain concealed from anyone, would suggest smuggling or fear to the superb Persian nation; but such could be considered by us as little equal to high esteem as to an honest trade. And on the other hand, it having been observed that the governors themselves doubt the written name of lessie sarbassie, supposing instead that it must be the sort Restiesjerbaffje, etc.; thus today, upon consideration according to the condition of the times, occasioned for the welfare of the true interest in the subject matter, and so as not to have the servants receive a wrong good for a good sort in the subject matter, it was resolved to instruct the servants in Isfahan to keep themselves quiet in that trade for so long, until upon their reported advice and upon our humble request they were reinforced by the Right Honorable Indian Government at Batavia with an experienced man who knows silk and would also know how to compare the purchase there against the Persian price, to prevent considerable losses and their consequences. Likewise, if we were obliged to undergo the tolls as ordinary merchants and not being permitted to do so, whether one might then venture a contract of toll exemption against the remittal of the abolished recognition money. But the Residents' report on the Muscovite traffic has for the present merited no reflection, under faithful assurance nevertheless to write back what is necessary to the servants regarding that after the dispatch of this. Just as we also did not fail, by our humble letter of 14 May anno 1739, to most humbly request of their High Honors a silk expert, to the end that all scruples might thereby be cleared and we might proceed with peace of mind in that trade if the ruler would permit us to do so. Which request their High Honors were pleased to grant by sending hither with the small vessel Kronenburgh the sergeant Hendrik Steenekamp. And as in the meantime a good opportunity presented itself to obtain here 12 lb of that spun silk for mamudis 320, being f 136:—:— light money, we then had it examined by the aforesaid person, and it was found as the following report indicates: The undersigned, having inspected the received silk samples to the best of his knowledge according to Your Right Honorable and Honorable esteemed orders, he has, after careful inspection, found the same to be of such value and quality as is most humbly shown hereunder, namely: No. 1 Best sort, good and pure silk, fully capable of being worked. No. 2 Somewhat worse, but as just mentioned pure and capable of being worked, but No. 3 Bad sort, and not much better than that recently sent to Batavia per Thuys te Foreest. And since the servants in Isfahan had received an order on 7 August before to send a small parcel hither as a sample, they proceeded to effectuate this on 7 January of the past year by sending 30¼ lb, which spun silk was confronted with the aforementioned traded 12 lb and found to be such as may be amply viewed in the report submitted thereof dated 13 February, incorporated in the resolution taken on that account on 15 February anno 1741, of which the principal part, besides the demonstration of the Honorable Director Carel Koenad, to be found in the said Resolution Book on pages 375, 376, and 377, shall be inserted here in extract to refresh the memory: Concerning the silk recently received from Isfahan, having consisted and cost, according to the dictation of the invoice received on 28 December of the past year from the Residents at the said place, sent hither on the 8th of that month with their further writings, namely: 30½ lb silk

From Persia Under date 31 October 1742 His report touched upon therein is remarkable, the same being calculated on account of the close agreement with the prices of his time, in proportion as purchases were made in the beginning of the gathering, because his proposition asserted with reasons both that the silk was to be obtained cheaply (at the rate cited under Letters F and G) and at the same time the best sort among it. It appearing from this transaction what combinations we then made to postpone this trade until the further honored order of their High Nobles, because of its uncertainty. Yet, as no answer was received thereto and we nevertheless at present have an occasion to effect something to the most advantageous service of the Lords and Masters, I am therefore of the complete opinion that we should not neglect this opportunity, but acquit ourselves as zealous servants in the service of the Lords and Masters, the more so because we have been ordered, both by their Noble High Respects and their High Nobles, as to how far we may go, item, spend for the pound. Yet, in order to use as far as possible all necessary precautions in the case in question whenever the general resolution might fully serve the gentlemen and masters to petition His Majesty regarding this matter, I have considered it most useful beforehand to put my concept on paper in a small draft in the Persian language, which, being translated into the Dutch language, reads word for word as follows: Whereas in past times the plenipotentiaries of the High and Mighty Dutch Company entered into a contract with the late grandees of this Empire regarding the trade in silk, according to which each year, when one hundred Cargas of silk of the sort resti serbaffie kedgoda passable according to the sealed sample thereof was delivered at Spahan to the Dutch Captain by the said grandees, 44 th=s was paid for each Carga; since at that time no services such as are now requested from the High and Mighty Dutch Company by the Empire were asked, and consequently could not be performed either, on which account, according to the said agreement, in recognition of the silk delivery, certain present goods were handed over at Gamron for His Majesty.
