Persia under date 31 October 1742 has that if one calculates the short-delivered coral according to the imported quantity per mentioned keel of 197000 lb, such actually amounts to no more than 287 39/10 percent advance, but, as said, calculated according to the trade books would yield 337½ percent; yet because the established sale prices have the books as their foundation, and with the invoices we sometimes find the old remaining stock far exceeding the newly imported in dearness, item the assessment must be made upon that, and he, the Commander, is therefore of the opinion whether it should be of equal importance to the Honorable Company whether the crew pays for the sale price of goods which they in such an unfortunate manner lost and must pay for, or whether it was sold out of the warehouses to Moorish and Heathen merchants, provided that the Honorable Company is kept free from loss and the profits derived from the goods being sold are not withheld from Their High Nobilities; so that it is supposed, subject to correction, that no further assessment can take place for the present, but that we are kept from it, wherefore it was decided in all humility to submit this to Their High Nobilities in the outgoing dispatch and to await their further honored orders, which sentiment was concurred with and approved by each member of the Council. 423 Persia Under date 31 October 1742 was concurred with and approved by the Council; wherefore, in the first outgoing dispatch to Their High Nobilities, the same shall be presented with all respect, and a favorable accommodation to that end requested; as well as that the further assessment of the Commander Claas Visscher according to the order could not take place, for the reason that the 53 pieces of striped soesjes potia were charged to him not at 30 percent according to the terms of the resolution of 9 June Anno 1740, but conformable to the books, see trade journal of Anno 17 29/0 page 117, at 62 percent roughly, wherefore the order to charge him with another 20 or even 50 percent lapses of its own accord. Likewise, the well-mentioned High Nobilities come to order concerning the estate of the Junior Merchant and Spahan chief, the late Mr. van Leijpzigh, that whereas the Political Council by resolution of 18 April 1740 thought fit to transfer those affairs to the Judicial College, but nevertheless could resolve to interfere politically with that estate, and at the same time to grant the Spahan servants license Persia Under date 31 October 1742 to grant license to conclude an accommodation with legitimate claimants, also not to leave unconsidered the so-called doctor who attended van Leypzigh during his illness; but this was not held by Their High Nobilities to be satisfactory, since they state they can find no reasons why the Honorable Company should be held to pay such debts of less worthy servants; on that ground also ordering that all that has been executed or entered into regarding the making of an accommodation with the creditors of van Leypzigh of blessed memory shall be left to the account of those who gave their consent thereto; but whereas all the monies advanced by the Honorable Company in the service of its said servant and for the upholding of the Honorable Company's true esteem have long since been reimbursed to the Honorable Company out of the estate of the proceeds and deposited in the cash box, item he, van Lypsigh, presently or under today's date still has to his credit with the Honorable Company a small sum of ƒ105:9:15 2/5, see below inserted copy of the pay account. 80 Persia under date 31 October 1742 In the Office Gamron Anno 174½ for Amsterdam Mattheus van Leipzigh of Batavia, Junior Merchant 1713, engaged into service on Bengal as sailor. 1741 16 October: By the Honorable Company: 3:8:14 being that which he was credited in the books of Anno 17 23/40, and whereas his estate at that time was not yet accounted for, he is carried forward in the following manner. 28 October: To the Honorable Company for advance, see Journal: ms 14709: ƒ6251: 6: 8 4 November: To Steven Pruymelaar for assessment as above: ms 128: ƒ54: 8: — To Pieter Aalmis for assessment as per Journal: ms 14508: ƒ6165: 18:— 1742 23 May: To the Honorable Company for credit balance carried forward: ms 165: 9: 15 5/8 16 November: ms 26014 or ƒ105: 9: being so much as amounted by the goods sold by the Fiscal of this Directorate, Willem Allard van Jongstal, Extra-Ordinary, in the presence of 2 Judicial Commissioners, which amount (see extract Judicial Resolution of date 14 November current year, bound behind this chamber) was counted into the cash box; thus he was credited for that amount: ms 26014:—:— ƒ1055: —19: — Trade book ms 1923:— ƒ87:5:8 being so much as was left behind in Spahan after his decease and converted into money by the ministers there (see aforesaid extract); thus he was credited in the same manner for: ms 1923: — Number 74 12/3 or ƒ15:3:8 being that which was paid into the cash box for his account by the Honorable Merchant Simon Clement, Provisional Commander of this Directorate, as attorney of the Boushire Merchant Jacob van Schoonderwoort: ms 74 12/3 ƒ15: 3: 8 So that it clearly appears from this, respectfully stated, that this order likewise lapses of its own accord since everything has been repaid. But in order to comply with Their High Noble Honours' order, and to no longer be recorded as unfaithful servants, that shall, as stated, be sent over in the coming shipment, and in accordance with the order henceforth no further requisition will be made for linens on which a 50 percent advance could not previously be calculated. Further, attention being paid to the highly esteemed orders of Their High Noble Honours cited in the frequently mentioned letter, to sell the four main types of spices neither for less nor more than the set prices, namely cloves to

From Persia under date of 31 October 1742 to 100, the nutmegs to 2d=s broken at 68, the mace to 160, and cinnamon to 60 light stivers after deduction of brokerage, and Persian money loss may be sold, with emphatic order to dispose of that highly valued fruit for gold ducats, reals and imperial thalers as much as possible at present. Since private rumors maintain, and their High Honors also say they are convinced thereof, that not only gold ducats are to be obtained in abundance in Gamron, but even that trade could be driven with them, although we must testify with unanimity that these rumors, favorably speaking, are utterly frivolous and untrue, because it is something rare and strange when one sees a small number of that specie together, let alone being able to negotiate with it, notwithstanding that it is also true that some ample years ago they were to be had in abundance; but at present one must be content to dispose of the trade goods for the most part for Surat, Bengali, and Persian [illegible] and Veli Ahmeds, which first species are calculated at 5 and the latter at mamoodies each, because one is bound 429 From Persia under date of 31 October 1742 to trade for such local species as are circulating among the merchants at the place where one resides, and cannot be rejected. 431 From Persia under date 31 October 1742 tallying with the respected order, the following increase in the price of spices was therefore unanimously established, namely: cloves from 72 2/3 m=s to 85 1/4 m=s per 6 pounds nutmegs from 49 9/10 to 58 per ditto cinnamon from 44 1/5 to 51 1/5 per ditto mace from 116 to 136 2/8 per ditto. Furthermore, the Authority proposed to the members the order of their High Excellencies the Gentlemen of the High Government of the Indies, stating that all such moneys, after deduction of the Spahan bill of exchange debt amounting to f16058:6:8, that remained in arrears with the brokers at the transfer between the departing and incoming authorities Koenad and Guschi, must be compensated by the former and whoever else is liable for it, provided that they shall always retain their claim on the brokers without any inconvenience or loss being caused thereby to the Honorable Company, since their High Excellencies are pleased to note that at the settlement held on date 17 May A=o 1740 with the Honorable Company's brokers, the same From Persia under date 31 October 1742 were in arrears f355918:17:14, in which the above-cited debt is included. From this the Authority must assume that the noble writer, with all due respect and esteem, has no correct conception regarding the account with the said Cartoirs, because, as it appears to him, it is maintained that the money circulates among the brokers and is not essentially in the chest, as it actually is, which chest stands in the secret office in the house of the Authority, of which said brokers, the Authority, and the second person each have a separate key according to an ancient custom, notwithstanding that the funds are only the responsibility of the last two mentioned, for the brokers are not used further than by way of cashier. In that manner, their account in the books is also running according to a practice that has existed for very many years, whereby their account is debited upon the sale of goods and in contra credited for their daily disbursements, from which it results that at the departure of a ship or ships to Batavia their debit is greatly diminished, 433 From Persia under date 31 October 1742 because upon the departure of vessels they are first credited for their disbursement of the cash, goods, etc. being sent therewith, which is the reason why their account in the trade books of 1739/40 upon the takeover of the authority of this directorship by the departing authority Carel Koenad only amounted to a sum of f203495:8:1 1/2, considering that said Cartoirs had then already been credited for what had recently been sent both in cash and goods per the ships Valkenisse and Noordwykerhoud to Batavia and other respective western offices. 441 From Persia under date 31 October 1742 was judged most beneficial in the service of the Honorable Company, before proceeding to the expenditure of a large capital, to await the positive order and instructions in this matter from Their High Nobilities at Batavia concerning the aforementioned dispatched silk sample, together with a silk expert, and not to make great haste in this matter, just as we now once again all respectfully adhere to that resolution, so as not to bring disadvantages upon the Honorable Company instead of advantages, the more so because it is an absolute impossibility to obtain it for the stated price of 16 schellingen Dutch money per lb. For the variety that Their Honorable High Mightinesses come to require, namely lessie serbastie first sort, now according to the recently received Isfahan price current of 5 May just passed, 12 lb costs 237 mahmudis or ƒ 100:14:8, according to which 6 lb would stand at 118½ or 50:7:4, or per lb ƒ 8:7:14, which, exclusive of any charges, would exceed the set price to our detriment by ƒ 2:7:14. From Persia Under date 31 October 1742 heaved from the sea, so that the ship could not be kept off the shore, and likewise the aforesaid vessel then also received a heavy blow some time thereafter and the tiller was entirely smashed to pieces, whereby they were unable to steer the ship any longer, and furthermore the forepart of the ship at half past seven and the aftpart of the ship shortly after that time were completely wrecked and smashed to splinters. Herewith the deponents end their statement given, providing as reasons for their knowledge to have seen and attended the same in this manner, remaining furthermore prepared, if required, to confirm the same under oath. Thus done and declared in the Netherlands Office at Gamron at the time as above, in the presence of the assistants Wilhelmus Boelhouwer and Jan Busing, clerks of this secretariat, as witnesses, who have signed the original minute hereof together with the deponent and myself, the subscribed clerk. From Persia Under date 31 October 1742 Which proposal was answered unanimously in the affirmative, and it was furthermore resolved to order the paymaster to draw up a sound monthly roll whereby each person shall be granted two months wages and no more; as was also ordered to him to enter the arrived persons of Ridderskerk into the Gamron lodge books from the time of the loss of that vessel, or from 17 February of the past year; and the ship's bookkeeper remaining here, Jan Hendrik Scheffer, was also ordered to close their accounts under 16 February, or the day that the ship was thus unfortunately stranded, as the books have likewise remained here with him. 471 From Persia under date 31 October 1742 Yesterday, being the 7th of the month Rabieul Awel 1155, the 12th of May Anno 1742, the skipper of the Honorable Company's former ship Ridderskerk, Jan Zion, arrived here together with 15 lesser servants, as well as 2 persons who had also been along as interpreters. From which Captain I understood with particular sorrow that now 3 months ago the aforementioned ship was lost between Caratien and Bander Lourie, and that the chief mate and second mate, along with another 28 lesser servants, perished with it, without anything or in the least of all the equipment and other goods remaining therein having been saved or recovered. Out of 56 souls, only 26 people, besides the aforementioned 2 interpreters, escaped the disaster bare and naked. Of these, 18 have arrived here as said before, and another 10 are wandering about on some native vessels with Alie Zulthoen. Therefore I request your Highness to please order that Sultan to immediately release the Honorable Company's servants still with him and send them to me, as I otherwise fear that these people will become desperate through enduring so many fatigues. After the ship had already been lost, Captain Zion most earnestly requested Alie Sulthoen to assist him with money for hiring vessels or with a vessel, in order that he could sail to the island where the ship was lost to see if any goods from the stranded ship could still be saved. But Alie Sulthoen would in no way lend his ear to the request or entreaties of the skipper, however urgent and reasonable they were, but answered by asking what he wanted to do with money, as everything had already been carried off, stolen, and plundered by the natives of that place. To which the skipper answered From Persia under date 31 October 1742 answered that he at least wished to fulfill his duty to come account for himself to us, and secondly that he needed money to buy food for himself and his crew. To which the Sultan again replied, money I cannot give you, but I will provide for your people's provisions. Yet nothing came of this promise either, until after the skipper had troubled him about it several times, so that after many requests and very much trouble he finally delivered the following: 148 man or 840 lb rice, 60 man or 240 lb wheat flour, 1 man cake butter, and per buck. Which meager provisions for so many souls were barely enough for a month, so that they were compelled to seek their necessary sustenance and refuge for the rest with the nakhodas of the vessels and lesser persons, by whom they were supported to some extent until here, on condition of reimbursement. The said skipper and 10 men being placed on a two-masted chialoup, Tatarhauoema; the second mate and 16 sailors on a vessel; the boatswain's mate and 3 men on a galwet, by Alie Zulthoen; but 2 men he kept with him as gunners. And as has already been said, only 16 persons of them have arrived, with 10 still missing, I therefore request that these may also soon be obtained through your Highness's favor. From Persia under date 31 October 1742 to bring, so that those goods remained therein and the ship, unrigged, was taken from us, and moreover as many people, horses, provisions, etc. were shipped aboard her as they themselves saw fit. We were forced to see that vessel, willing or not, depart from here in such a state. These actions are completely contrary to the hospitality and privileges which foreigners, but we especially, through the King's favor, have always enjoyed in this Empire in former times. And since Your Highness is prudent, merciful, and wise, and can very well perceive what is right in this matter, I therefore come to beseech Your Highness by the illustrious head of His Majesty that you may please devise a means whereby our prestige may be restored as of old and no longer be violated by such ill-intentioned persons. Notwithstanding the thousandfold services to the Crown which have been performed by the High and Mighty Dutch Company at great expense, effort, and heavy damages, we nevertheless, for the service of the Empire and to relieve some poor people from their dire distress into which they had been brought by the demanding of money, advanced a long time ago much cash to the Kalantars and other notables of Minab and Shamil. However, of this, to this day, with a thousand kinds of trouble, only very little has been recovered, and every time complaints were made about it and assistance was requested from the Governors for the collection of those monies, they indeed granted a taleqa and a muhassil (debt collector). Yet after they had collected some insignificant sums of money, they turned back and thus left the work they had begun unfinished, by which conduct the taleqas were made fruitless and were despised and scorned by the debtors. In like manner it stands with the equipment goods of anchors, ropes, etc. delivered for the Empire, which, as mentioned, were taken away by the former Sardar Imamverdi Khan, as I have already informed Your Highness, which will appear more clearly from the enclosed copy of a letter concerning that matter written by me 475 From Persia under date 31 October 1742 by me to His Excellency the Naib Mohammad Baqir Beg; of all the goods mentioned therein, not a single duit has been paid to this day to me or to any of the servants of the High and Mighty Dutch Company. Therefore, I most earnestly request, on account of the true friendship, help, and favor which have always been maintained by my High and Mighty Lords toward His Majesty, and likewise the friendship which I have maintained with Your Highness for some time, that Your Highness please devise such an effective remedy whereby not only this, but all that is requested herein, may have a desired outcome. Also taken under resumption were two written petitions for an increase in wages from the assistant Cornelis Kalden of Batavia and the provisional ditto Pieter Kuiper also of Batavia, and whereas both these persons are of a sober and competent conduct, and their terms have amply expired, the first is therefore advanced from absolute assistant at ƒ 24 to the title of bookkeeper at ƒ 30 per month, and the second from provisional assistant at ƒ 9 to absolute assistant at ƒ 20 per month, under an equal term of engagement of three years, as also upon his written request of the 9th, third master of the ship Cornelia, Hendrik Berndumolyn from the Graaf, from the said rank and ƒ 9 to under-master at ƒ 14 per month under a new three-year term of engagement. Furthermore, having seen to our joy the good prospect which the servants, by their aforementioned letter of 31 March of the past year, gave regarding a notable sale of assorted spices; because through the arrival of many prominent merchants there is a great demand for that aromatic fruit, for which reason they have notified us thereof by express post at a cost of rna 440:– besides another 50 ms bounty with 2 express messengers, and in addition have also sent a requisition for diverse merchandise, and because that which has been requisitioned by them, both now and previously, is worth the trouble to be taken into serious consideration, since the spices, being sufficiently supplied, might yield large profits and thereby the expenses could be noticeably alleviated; therefore His Honour proposed to the council whether now that the ship Ridderskerk was lost and our hope of a dispatch thither had disappeared thereby, one could not with reassurance, although the presents that must be delivered upon the arrival of a ship might run some risk of being lost, send thither the sloop de Valk, with the recommendation that the servants must exercise frugality in those expenditures as much as ever possible to prevent own loss; which proposition was approved by every one of the gentlemen, considering that although our hope lay in the sand through the stranding of the aforementioned vessel Ridderskerk, the cargo of that little craft would nevertheless be precious and therefore somewhat more than usual could be allowed. But after the intended venture of that craft was made known to the chief mate and commander sailing thereon, Claas Visscher, the same appeared before this council to testify that the aforementioned vessel was far too unseaworthy and leaky to undertake a voyage to Bassoura, since, when loaded, 12 and, when unloaded, 6 inches of water came to the pump every half-hour glass, and which leakage increased daily. This unexpected news made everyone suppose that this was untrue, because he, Visscher, had not spoken about it to anyone beforehand; wherefore the gentleman Commander asked him why no notice of that leakage had been given previously, since he had indeed been idling here in the roads for fully 4 months without doing anything, in which interval it could certainly have been repaired. To this he replied that the sloop had never been leaky before, but had only now become so during the Congo voyage; that he would have given warning long ago had he not had hope of being able to find and stop the leak, but seeing that this was in vain and he was now assigned to such a heavy voyage, he no longer dared to conceal it.
