Persia the 29th of June 1743 Concerning the reporting of the cash, what one shall order them regarding the return of the cash: in general about the pepper, whereof they have not even sold half of what was received with the Duyf, therefore those residents shall, in letters to be sent, be commanded to use somewhat more moderation in demanding goods, since sometimes, through their rash and premature petitions, they become overstocked with the Honorable Company's merchandise and remain stuck with it, which would be an irresponsible matter for them. Under the 21st of March, the state of their cash had, under the ultimate of February last, according to the letter of the 29th of March, amounted to m=rs 105617:-:4 or ƒ 4904:4:8. Afterward, the same has, through the sale of 275 lb cloves, 250 lb nutmegs, 5775 lb pepper, been increased by m=rs 19092:— or ƒ 59892:—, so that under the 29th of March the cash there had to keep m=s 119749 or ƒ 50893:6:8, which consists of the following species, as in Nadnes or Persian coin species: m=s 94755:— or ƒ 40270:17:8 sjallotten and piasters: m=s 24994:— or ƒ 10622:9:— total: m=s 119749:— or ƒ 50893:6:8. Concerning the aforementioned cash, the residents are to be ordered that they, by sending it here with English opportunities, must endeavor to rid themselves of it as much as possible, before perhaps unexpectedly the Persian comes to fall upon the Turkish lands, as they would then only see themselves embarrassed with the said money; the cash sent over from there with the Duyff amounting to ƒ 189395:12:—, and which also goes over with the bearer of this. With the cloth debtors in question, it is to our regret, according to the residents' letter of the 31st of December, still in the same state as we recently had the honor to inform Your High Nobilities, so that, with your permission, we begin to regard that debt as desperate. In conformity with the favor of recourse granted to us by Your High Nobilities, those residents have, by letter of the 19th of April, been ordered to make compensation for the gift delivered to Achmed Pasha to the amount of ƒ 6598:2:8, together with the rejected 1/9 percent or 4 1/2 Ceylon coffee beans to the amount of ƒ 4:16:—, or together with m=s 1536 1/3 amounting to ƒ 6602:18:8, but because we have not yet received any reply concerning this, we shall take the liberty on a further occasion to report most obediently on it to Your High Nobilities. The enclosures to this will, in conformity with orders, still be found joined with an original resolution taken by those servants on the date of the 29th of October of the past year, whereby it will appear that the presentation of His Nobility, the High Noble, Rigorous, Most Honorable Lord Johannes Thedens as Governor-General of the entirety of the Netherlands Indies, has been properly executed in accordance with the orders given by letter of the 12th of July of the past year; as also how those residents, with an English certificate dated the 1st of December of the past year granted to them by the residing English chief there, Mr. Thomas Dorril, verify the nature and honesty of the gift delivered by them in the year 1740 to the then Musallim Lahia Aga and further regents, to the value of ƒ 678:12:8, and sold for ƒ 1288:13:8, to annul the money demanded of them on loan up to m=s 95000 or ƒ 19125:—:—; and since they have not known how to clear themselves in any other way, therefore those servants have the courage, it is hoped, to trust that the said declaration, having been executed by an impartial person, will be recognized as valid and thus may show to Your High Nobilities the truth in the delivering of the above-mentioned present. From Bushehr, we have received, shortly after the departure of the ship Cornelia or on the 2nd of November, the commissioners' letters of the 7th of October prior; and since it appeared to us through the calculations cited therein that they had not well understood the order given by Your High Nobilities and the increase of the four sorts of spices and linens, since only the brokerage had been reduced therefrom by them, and not the 16 3/8 percent loss on money, which they moreover promise to remit upon sending here the cash proceeding therefrom; for that when they sent m=rs 19 9/48 or ƒ 50:1:13 3/44 they would only charge m=t 10 or ƒ 42:10:— for it; but since only great confusion and disorder in the books as well as in the trade was about to be caused hereby, therefore this proposal was rejected by us by letter of the 12th of November, and at the same time the commissioners were ordered anew that they, without deviation, should have

Persia the 29th of June 1743 From and whereabout and our instruction yet since on the other hand we again found nothing that contradicted to comply with the highly respected orders sent to them with the Duyff, and since we could not yet properly comprehend their intention nor on which office their aforementioned [illegible] would be brought upon remittance, we therefore requested elucidation thereon by letter of 15 December; and properly obtained also by letter of 30 January, namely, that upon remittance of the domestic coin they should calculate it no higher than to its intrinsic value according to the Batavia report, and that on the other hand they would compel the merchant to surrender the European ducats at 18 mamudis, the Spanish reals 4 mamudis 9 shahis, and the silver rupees at 4½ mamudis; yet since by them in that same missive shortly thereafter it was said that gold money was still rising daily and the ducat was sought and exported with particular greed by our English competitors and other private traders up to mamudis 21 and 8 florins 18 stuivers 8 penningen, while in India it was current up to rupees 4¼ or mamudis 21¼ of 9 florins 10 stuivers, as well as by their previous letters dated 7 October concerning the Spanish reals and imperial dollars saying that these were brought not by upcountry merchants but by chance from Muscat and Mocha principally by European 121 From Persia the 29th of June 1743 therefore these servants were instructed as necessary on this subject to follow the market, nations, and which European nations likewise did not easily part with the same there unless other profitable products could be obtained for them, but themselves transported them to India: so that we could not understand where the merchant would then obtain the gold money, Spanish reals, and imperial dollars for trade, since this proposition appeared to us very groundless and invalid and we would gladly see ourselves further informed regarding this delicate point, in order thus to devise what is best for the well-being of the Honorable Company; therefore those servants were instructed by letter of 19 April that if it could be calculated by them that when accepting the gold European ducat at mamudis 18 or 7 florins 13 stuivers 8 penningen, the Spanish reals at mamudis 9 1/10 or 3 florins 17 stuivers 5 1/5 penningen, and the rupees at mamudis 4½ or 1 florin 18 stuivers 4 penningen, and setting the goods back at the old prices, the same would then be more profitable for the Honorable Company, we might indeed consider it, provided however that the same must first be demonstrated to us more clearly and in more detail, since we had reason to feel otherwise; and since by them, by letter of 10 December, a request was made that since the goods were thus considerably increased in prices, their defect to they might therefore also be permitted, when desirable returns were brought, From Persia the 29th of June 1747 was rejected, to know the resolution taken on that date from which in barter still 1 2/9 percent could be gained to be allowed then to follow the market and to value the gold mohurs up to mamudis 63 at 26 florins 15 stuivers 8 penningen, the gold European ducats up to mamudis 21 at 8 florins 18 stuivers 8 penningen, and the silver Spanish reals and imperial dollars up to 10¼ mamudis at 4 florins 7 stuivers 2 penningen; this request, being found upon calculation to be disadvantageous, was rejected, but ordained according to the resolution of 16 January by letter of 19 April, and ordained that they, in barter of Spanish reals or imperial dollars and upon receipt of silver rupees, would have to conduct themselves according to our decision taken on date 15 November and that which was written to them by letter of 15 December, namely to value the rupees at 4½ mamudis or 1 florin 18 stuivers 4 penningen and the Spanish reals and imperial dollars at their old prices of 9 1/10 mamudis or 3 florins 17 stuivers 5 2/5 penningen, because the first-mentioned specie being received at 4½ mamudis would yield a profit of 11 12/29 percent when melted down against Persian money; but since it was subsequently communicated to us by those commissioners by letter of 10 April that they sold 18954 pounds of pepper, the 6¼ pounds at 8½ mamudis, thus together for 23186 mamudis or 9845 florins 11 stuivers, and obtained therefor a quantity of 123 From Persia the 29th of June 1743 to encourage the commissioners thereto increased in price as shown here adjacent of 1281 pieces of gold European ducats at 18 mamudis or 7 florins 13 stuivers, which upon calculation was found to yield 10 5/6 percent more profit than if the 6¾ pounds had been sold at 9½ mamudis and therefor rupees received at 4½ mamudis, and ample 1 1/40 percent when the ducat had been received at 8 florins 18 stuivers 8 penningen; therefore this transaction was viewed as mercantile in estimate on 31 May, and furthermore it was approved to further encourage the commissioners thereto as being approved the commissioners one of the most profitable products, and we shall take the honor on another occasion to inform Your Excellencies further about its outcome; From Persia, the 29th of June 1743 some funds have been paid into the cash there, as also a post for the curing of his leg has been drawn, yet by Your High Nobilities' letters of the 6th of November it was ordered that it had to be reimbursed again by the Commissioner, together and alongside another f 411: 2, or the cost of 3502 lb of wheat, which Your High Nobilities, according to the invoice of the ship De Duijff dated the 14th of May of the past year, have caused to be recalculated, refunded, and counted out in cash into the vault, according to letters of the 4th of October of the past year and the 30th of January of the current year. Being likewise on the grounds of a petition, under high and revered approval, the First Commissioner was ordered by us by letter of the 19th of April to make good such f 1033: 12 as had been debited to him according to the resolution of the 11th of April, over various expenses standing known by Your High Nobilities' esteemed letters of the 30th of September of the past year; being likewise in the same manner the second dito, Huijbert van Poot, required to make restitution of f 847: 17: 8, which was expended for the curing of his leg and was also rejected by Your High Nobilities. The state of the cash there, according to the notification of the date of the 10th of April of the current year, consisted of ms 41415 1/2 lb, f 17601: 11: 12, which was retained by the Commissioners for an emergency fund, while by them with the ship De Duijf to this place in various species has been withdrawn ms 157421, f 66903: 18: 8; and as they indeed required the aforementioned funds for their daily expenses, we therefore approved that transaction in the session of the 31st of May. Yet they shall nevertheless also be ordered that whenever the cash, through trade, has a solid sum to expect, they must then send those funds hither by the first English opportunity, in order not to be encumbered with the cash in the event of an unexpected incident. At the request of the Hassanalie Beecq, the Commissioners have discharged from the ship De Duijff two lanterns and a compass for the service of a new vessel made there for the King; and since those goods were certified by the skipper Willem Noseman to be well dispensable, and such slight conveniences were not to be refused, the same was therefore accommodated in the session of the 1st of May. Yet the Commissioners shall be ordered henceforth not to be so liberal with any equipment or other ship's stores, but that such requests must always be refused. The Spahan Residents, alongside their letters of the 17th of October and the 2nd of November of the past year, have sent us a duplicate set of their trade ledgers of the year 174 1/2, which upon confrontation with the general ledgers were found to agree; and having been reviewed by resolution of the 16th of January of the current year, the profit and loss account was found closed with a surplus profit of f 23342: 11: -, yet against that the comparison lying in the front of the journal showed that the charges of the financial year amounted to f 20720: 16: 8, so that after subtraction of the charges the profits consisted of only a small amount of f 2621: 14: 8. Furthermore, it was communicated to us by them by letter of 17 December of the past year of the impossibility of being able to sell some of the Bengal sample cloths, chintz, large red turbans, or the Bengal handkerchiefs for a 50 per cent advance, on which account they came to request license to be allowed to return all linens which upon sale could not yield that revenue; and as the same squares with the respected order, fiat was therefore granted to them for this. From Persia the 29th of June 1743 Justification made regarding purchased cherries and drugs. The gray stallion mentioned in our humble letters shall be most obediently presented. Furthermore, the servants come to justify themselves by letter of the 17th of October of last year regarding the dried cherries and various other drugs purchased in the year 1740, with solemn assurance that no fraud or self-interest resides therein, but that all goods as specified truly cost that much; indeed, they even say that they would presently be unable to deliver any of those goods so cheaply anymore, because the Muscovite resident and a French physician, Monsieur Galibert, bought up most kinds at fully three times the price and departed therewith across Muscovy to Europe with 70 corges thereof. Which defense being the pure truth according to their statement, we therefore hope that it will be accepted as satisfactory by Your High Noblenesses. The gray stallion known from our humble letters of the 31st of October of last year, pursuant to orders, arrived here on the 23rd of April together with and alongside the caffila made known above under the article of Demands; and as that animal upon inspection was found to be truly a fine and young beast, we have therefore persisted in our resolution taken on the 31st of May of last year, for which reason that riding animal is sent over with the bearer of this for the Jaffnapatnam stud farm, in the hope that, being still a young and sound beast of four years of age, it may be of good use there. Wherefore we hope that the tyrannical and unreasonable proceedings of the lowland regents will finally cease, and that they will treat us somewhat better and show us more esteem, friendship, and assistance than before. From Persia the 29th June 1743 desired outcome had been Whereupon at the meeting of the 16th January last it was resolved to send the duplicate of the aforementioned petition, together with another letter of the same date serving as its escort, to the residents at Spahan for further secure delivery, with the recommendation that they should look out and inquire after a great grandee of the King who is an enemy of the aforementioned Tackie Chan, in order that we might all the better ensure its proper delivery. This order was very closely observed by the chief Pieter Aalmis, and having been complied with, those petitions were sent by him directly to the King's first confidant and writer of decrees, His Highness Megdie Chan, which powerful lord thereupon obtained the aforementioned decrees (the translations of which, marked with letters R and S, accompany the other native translations and are most obediently presented to Your High Noble Honours for perusal) and sent them for further delivery to his representative residing in Spahan, Aga Alie, who forwarded the same to the chief Aalmis for return. From Persia the 29th June 1743 to give the Spahan residents a small gift And since, upon the delivery of those royal tokens of favor, the last-mentioned lord showed proof and even presented a draft written to him for the said Megdie Chan concerning some expenses that were alleged to have been incurred by the said favorite for the obtaining thereof (although we know better and attribute this to Persian greed and avarice), we have therefore been requested by the Spahan residents by letter of the 17th May to grant permission for the presentation of a small gift to the aforementioned Megdie Chan and his representative, the lord Aga Alie. And since we daily experience (God mend it) that such expenses cannot well be avoided, and also that it will be a great support for the Honorable Company's interests everywhere in this realm to have so powerful and great a protector close to the King, to whom we can with peace of mind entrust all our affairs and interests, permission shall be granted, upon the departure of letters to the said servants, for the presentation of a proportionate gift. From Persia the 29th June 1743 our hope regarding Tackie Chan's return and wish concerning this matter; shall withhold what is requested In the meantime we shall eagerly await the return of Mohamet Tackie Chan, with the sincere wish that we may succeed well and to our satisfaction regarding this momentous agreement to be entered into, and also that we may be so fortunate as to be able to share its hoped-for good outcome with Your High Noble Honours upon a later shipping opportunity, to the end that the Honorable Company may in time enjoy its benefits, and that we may thereby further partake of Your High Noble Honours' benign kindness. Nadir Shah is currently residing in the city of Tabries and his troops in Hamadan, with which he is minded (as he pretends) to make a pilgrimage to the Kaaba, this being the place in Moriah where Abraham erected an altar when he intended to sacrifice his son Isaac at the Lord's command; to obtain passage he has already sent a request to the Grand Seigneur, pretending From Persia the 29th June 1743 to which, however, little belief is given for reasons; his own son pretending that he has made a vow to God to go thither with his army to make sacrifices and thanksgiving offerings for all his victorious conquests, and that after that performance he is minded to spend the remainder of his days in rest and peace as a Haji (for thus are called those who have visited the burial place of Muhammad). But according to the general opinion, the same is well contrived in order to seize the opportunity thereby to penetrate into the Ottoman country; for if this request is refused him (as we assume for certain it will be), he has at once a pretext to be able rightfully to declare war against the Turk. If his request is granted, then the gates of the Ottoman Empire will be opened wide enough for him and his followers, so that according to the general opinion Nadir Shah will receive a refusal rather than an approval of this his unreasonable request; time will show this more clearly. Persia the 29th of June 1743 when he was brought as a prisoner to the middle prince, Nesar Coelie miersa, he was shown another 10 bullets, all of which, as he himself declared, he had intended to venture against the King, in the hope that through the death of that monarch this realm would finally attain a wished-for peace and respite, for which, so he said, the greater part of the King's army yearned, since they had not seen their homes, wives, nor children for almost ten years, wherefore such an unsettled and wandering life began to grieve them, and he therefore did not doubt, although his attempt had failed, whether there would not easily be found enough others who would likewise venture a chance at the Monarch's life in order to attain peace. What impression this candid account will make on the King's mind, and whether he will thereby incline towards peace, time must tell. The aforementioned delinquent has only been deprived of his sight, and is kept in close custody, as well as interrogated several times to see whether he will yet disclose anything that might be of concern to the King, but until now nothing has leaked out about it. The King has nevertheless, notwithstanding that his ministers have advised him against his intention and the calamities that could result therefrom have been shown and presented to him, abolished the Shia or old Persian faith and caused the Turkish faith to be introduced into his lands, as well as caused to be published by writings in the mosques the reasons why he comes to do this, since he says he was raised from generation to generation in the Sunni faith, and has now found by experience that the same is the pure Mohammedan religion, but that on the contrary the Shia was only a faith composed by King Sjak Ismael, which was solely invented by that monarch in order thereby to seize cause for war with the Turks; and since he wished to unite with them again, as well as remove all contrary means thereto, he therefore ordered that when the daily prayers are performed by the mullahs in the mosques, they shall have to include therein Omar, Osman, and Ababeeker, which three are held by the Persians to be deceivers, but by the Turks to be the true followers of Mahomed. This command has already, according to report received from Spahan dated the 5th of May of the past year, been published there and in almost all the cities of this realm, not without uproar and a great consternation among the common people, but until now no one has been found who is bold enough to oppose this order; how it will go in the future must be awaited. Persia the 29th of June 1743 The city of Musquette, together with its castles and forts that were virtually impregnable to this nation, have finally been surrendered by the Musquet Imam Seyf bin Sultan and slaves to the notorious and crafty Mhamed Tackie Chan, which strongholds are kept garrisoned by 1/3 Persians and 2/3 Arabs; the Seyf has been restored to his former government. The King's fleet, which consists of 13 capital three-masted and a large number of two- and single-masted vessels, has for a long time lay in the bay of Mattra, two miles west of Musquetta, where Mhamed Tachie Chan also kept his residence on land. From Persia the 29 June 1747. At what place the ship Pattisjahij perished and wherefrom the ship Patti Sjahij, on which they had placed all their hopes, wanted, it is said, to flee to Mocha, having been lost near Cape Ras el Gat, only 10 to 12 men thereof having been saved together with the head of the discontented, Sjeeg Rhoma, who immediately fled into the mountains without having been discovered as yet, whatever efforts were made to that end. Sjeeg Abdul Sjeeg, who had deserted with two ships of His Majesty and the wife of the well-known old Sjeeg Nasjet, has also surrendered himself to His Highness, together with the plunder, which consists of very great treasures. According to the rumours, the wealth that the said duke has obtained with the conquest of Musquetta and Mattra together cannot be taken away. The King was so delighted over this victory that he presented the chappar who brought the news, and who returned here these days, with a very heavy silk robe and 20 thons in ready money, and also wrote an extraordinarily friendly letter, embellished with very much praise, to Mhamed Tackie Chan. Nevertheless, something detrimental to the interests of that Chan must be plotted, because some time ago a chappar arrived from the King, as is presupposed, with orders to bring the keeper of the seal Miersa Mhomed Alieaga Sebber, Tmersa Hosseen, Mollaalie Sjah, and two others, all of whom are great magnates of that Chan, bound to the court. 159 From Persia the 29 June 1747. The said persons were withheld by Tackie Chan by making the chappar believe that he had sent them out on a long expedition, under the promise that he will deliver them upon return, wherefore that courier is forced to wait until the chappars of him, Tackie Chan, who departed incognito to the King on that very same day, return, and according to the good or bad tidings obtained by them therewith, that duke will conduct himself, very many presents having been promised by him to his friends residing at court if they can manage the annulment of that order, since His Highness would rather lose half of his treasures than these favourites, and principally Miersa Mhamed Alie, who constantly stays in a tent with him. What fruit this request of his for the preservation of those favourites with His Majesty will bear must be awaited. The cause of the summoning of the first three aforementioned persons is said to be because the King was informed of the violence committed by their people at the time when Mhamet From Persia the 29 June 1743. 163 Persia the 29 June 1743 concerning that, because it is said he is inclined to pay a visit to the Qatif and Samawat Arabs in order to punish them for the assistance they gave to the Huwala Arabs at the time of their rebellion, after which undertaking, if his aforesaid request is refused, he will attack Basra to force a path to the Kaaba with the aforementioned; however, from the Basra officials in their letter of 28 February, who make no difficulty at all about the intentions of the King regarding Baghdad and Basra that are so widely reported here, nor claim to have heard of any preparation for resistance in Baghdad etc., we live in the hope that the above will collapse of itself, and that this conqueror, now that he has conquered the greater part of the Lezgins on an Ismienna, will finally arrive at the peace so much needed by this kingdom, for which everyone, both great and small, is very eagerly longing. Persia the 29 June 1743 With the local government, and especially with his highness Abol Hassan Chan, Duke of Gamron and brother of Mohamed Tackie Chan, we live (notwithstanding the dispute cited by ships and letters) in good harmony, since we manage to keep him constantly in good humor with certain trifles to the spite of the English. The same, along with some of his principal officials and other city regents, was presented, in accordance with ancient custom on the feast of Nowruz, with f 1699:4:— cost price and f 5416:—:— selling price. Over and above this customary gift we were further obliged to make a larger one to the amount of f 2748:10:8 cost price and f 7511:-8 selling price to some of the Dukes known by name in our humble letters of 31 October of the previous year upon their departure, and this for such reasons as are cited in the resolution of 15 November, to which we most humbly refer, with the most obedient notification that the gifts 165 Persia the 29 June 1743 presented at this office from the last of August of the previous year until today amount to a total cost price of f 4443:14:8, but a selling price of f 12927:—8, as your High Nobilities will be able to see in greater detail, if you please, from the summary sent over with the trade papers; to which we most obediently refer, with the further humble assurance that whenever we receive gifts, we shall regulate the reciprocal ones in such a way that the cost price amount will yield, if not less, at least not more than what was received, in accordance with the respected order. The aforementioned Duke Abol Hassan Chan, having ridden to Isin for pleasure a few days after the Nowruz feast, was immediately invited by the English as a guest to their garden there for two or three days, but this offer was rejected by that Duke with very foul, slanderous expressions. On the contrary, he let the First Signer, who was staying in a small garden at Dambaye for the recovery of his health, know that when he returned from Isin he wished to come and see him in passing, since he had heard that he was very ill; which Persia the 29 June 1743 civility could not be declined without causing unpleasantness, for mild excuses for refusal would have been taken as a slight and could not have failed to give rise to a thousand kinds of embroilments with him. 173 Persia the 29 June 1743 Concerning ships and yachts as well as their loan, it serves most obediently to report that the ship the Duyf, or bearer hereof, which on 6 August of the past year was dispatched via Boucher to Bassoura, as we have had the honor most dutifully to inform your High Noblenesses, did not return here before the 26 February. The same would have been here one or two months earlier, were it not that we were privately warned of the plan of his Highness Mahamet Tackie Chan to request that vessel upon its return for the expedition against Musschetten. Therefore we deemed it most advisable to instruct the Bassoura and Boucher servants by letter of 12 November to detain that vessel until our further orders. But after the said duke with the King's fleet departed from here on the 1 December, and subsequently went out of sight on the 8th of the same from Kissen, counter-orders for a speedy dispatch hither were given on the 15th thereafter by two swift runners. But those men, because of the swollen rivers discharging from the Crown lands which hindered them in their journey, did not arrive at Boucher before 15 January. Being arrived, that order was immediately sent on to Bassoura where the ship lay, but it was not delivered there before the 1st of February. So that vessel could not obtain its dispatch before the 17th thereafter. And notwithstanding the departure of the bearer hereof falls later in the monsoon than we had hoped or expected, yet we flatter ourselves that your High Noblenesses will be pleased to approve our precautionary measures taken in this matter, as having been done with a good intention. For besides this, we have been considerably troubled with the loan of the sloop, that vessel having been employed for the transport of grains and soldiers, as is noted in the resolutions of 16 January, 24 February, and 11 April, for 6 different voyages: namely, twice to Sulphaars, 30 miles; once to Kissen, 4 miles; once to Chaerfagroen, 6 miles; and once to Mattarha, 1 to 1½ miles. 175 Persia the 29 June 1743 This coast of Musschetten being 84 miles from here, it had to be lent for such reasons as are cited in the said resolutions, to which we most obediently refer. And we further communicate in that regard that by God's blessing all these voyages were completed without any heavy disasters, except only that upon the return from Sulphaars a large topsail and a small boat were lost, and upon returning from Chaerfagoen 1 anchor and 1 cable were lost, as the depositions drawn up thereof, as well as those incorporated into the resolutions of 16 January and 24 February, will more fully explain to your High Noblenesses, whereunto we likewise humbly refer. The said small vessel returned from the last-mentioned place with matters unaccomplished, because Mahamed Tackie Chan had departed with the fleet, and therefore no one knew where he had sailed to or was staying, returning here on 21 February after the loss of the said anchor and cable, as well as with some defects to its pump, so that no grain was damaged. And since no bunting had been supplied to that vessel since 25 August 1740, and yet it was urgently needed as it no longer had any flag, jack, or pennants that were recognizable, as we ourselves saw, and the commander having made a written request for it, it was approved at the session of 16 January to supply 1 piece of brown-blue salempores and 2 pieces of chanchanis, leaving it to him to have a piece dyed red, with which he will have to manage until such time as we are accommodated with that always much-needed cloth. 179 From Persia, 29 June 1743 routed via Tuticorin, validated by the authorities. The assistant Isaac de Crane, by petition submitted at the session of 15 November, requested that his salary of ƒ 277:15:—, standing to his credit in three original pay accounts, might serve toward the reduction of his debit to the estate of the late Under-Merchant Mattheus van Leijpzigh, amounting to ƒ 2276:18:12. This request was granted to him, and his account was also credited for the said amount.
