From Mocha, the 3rd of February 1745. noted, properly delivered, from which the Honourable Company profited the aforementioned 75 percent or ƒ 2898: 13: but as I have already commenced to treat the matters concerning the commission to the Red Sea, and specifically the city of Mocha, I shall, to continue this subject, represent to your High Mightinesses according to my duty how, after having been properly provided with all necessities, I left the roadstead of Surat on the 24th of February of the past year, and having set course for the Red Sea, arrived at the aforementioned trading place on the 25th of March following, without any remarkable encounters; whereupon I immediately sent a lieutenant ashore with the ship's boat to the governor named Sidi Hamet, with orders to make our arrival known to him, and also at the same time to advise that we came there for trade, but alongside that, also how the absolute order of your High Mightinesses entailed that the same had to be conducted on board, but not From Mocha, the 3rd of February 1745 not driven ashore, the goods had to be delivered there, and paid for in ready cash, likewise to demand and receive the debts that the Honourable Company still legally claimed from the Royal Chamber or Beit al-Mal according to the Arabs' own statements to the sum of ƒ 19636. —. Through all the applied efforts and trouble taken, which were done with the greatest caution during various further solicitations both in person and through deputies to the aforementioned governor, I was not able to succeed in fulfilling the absolute and secure objective of your High Mightinesses regarding the manner of vending and delivery of the merchandise for ready money aboard the ship. Thus finally, because the trading season was already progressing considerably and by the 22nd of April nothing substantial regarding the trade had been achieved, and furthermore the Arab absolutely refused to submit to that new manner, which according to their testimony had never occurred, much less been practiced by other European or native traders, From Mocha, the 3rd of February 1745 and the monsoon to cross over to Surat or Malabar in order to arrive there in due time had expired, and since due to the blowing southerly winds it was impossible to get out of the gulf, and nothing was to be gained at Aden, we were compelled around the aforementioned days to resolve, as we could in no way constrain or obligate the Arab to your High Mightinesses' orders, to await secure and reasonable bids for the merchandise, to admit trade with us ashore, and to try to turn over a quantity of goods if possible within 10 to 15 days' time; and this the more so because I had learned on good authority that two English, one French, and one Moorish ship (the last from China) with assorted cargoes lay in Jeddah for vending, and from the same, besides some other goods, already 17 chests of cloves had been brought over to Mocha, due to the small consumption and bad market caused by the opulent supply there. From Mocha, the 3rd of February 1745 The aforementioned decision, being unavoidable so as to choose the lesser of two evils, was carried out without loss of time, but did not succeed according to heartfelt desires, seeing that at Mocha three English and two French ships, besides two Moorish vessels, were present for trade and had also brought to market, and already sold, good quantities of sugar, iron, pepper, nutmegs, cloves, and cinnamon, which filled that place to no small degree and caused much harm to my trade; the more so in a time when the scarcity of ready specie was very general, and the sales and consumption of those goods to the distant inland regions very poor, while no significant purchase of coffee took place, through which money must change hands. Nevertheless, I have applied all duty and mercantile means according to my present obligation toward the true interests of the Lords Masters, which were dedicated thereto, leaving nothing untried, so that after much effort, bidding, and bargaining, I have finally turned over the following goods for ready money in a cautious manner and within the time stipulated above, to the quantities of: 1342 lb. Cloves 110475 lb. Black winnowed Bantam pepper 128255 lb. From Mocha the 3rd of February 1745 hoping that these my dealings and actions, being thus attended to with due fidelity and true zeal, will be favorably approved and that through the esteemed kindness of Your Right Noblenesses, the generously promised 5 per cent commission will be granted to me; meanwhile on the 18th of May of the past year, after a lingering illness on board the ship in the roadstead, the second supercargo Jacob van Helsdingen passed away, and subsequently at the end thereof, in his place, according to the venerable orders given by Your Right Noblenesses in the Instruction, I had the bookkeeper Benjamin Thielen succeed him, and in the latter's place as scribe the sailor Hendrik Hoeffman, he being a reasonably good writer. Upon my earnest insistence on first arrival, and further on successive occasions with the Mochasan chief Regent for payment of the entire arrears of the Royal Chamber to the Honorable Company of 19636 Spanish reals, the same made great promises and assurances of satisfaction, first for the entire debit, but after that date reduced From Mocha the 3rd of February 1745 reduced to 5000 Spanish reals, on account, adding that he was inclined to settle the remainder annually in coffee beans, as he was currently destitute of cash, but this was not followed by the desired success, and the outcome has first shown me how faithless and shameful the Arab breaks his promises contrary to all agreements, and that no reliance whatever can be placed thereon, since when I later, on the 6th of August, went in person with the broker Weisingie to him, to demand, if not the entire sum, at least the 5000 Spanish reals in reduction of the debit from the Beit al-Faqih revenue, I received alas from him as answer that he was well inclined to hand over the aforementioned sum, but that I must first show the bond, whereto I replied that it was needless to say, he having already upon first arrival acknowledged the debt to be just and having also made a promise of payment, therefore that was to be held as a bond; to which he would not listen, and positively refused the satisfaction of either one or the other, without any further protests and allegations—that at the time of the presence of the ship Nieuwland some monies had indeed been paid to the Company on account—being of any avail, with the reply that he was not Governor of Mocha at that time; demanding moreover another gift, or else he would by no means condescend to my request to bring the Honorable Company's cash on board; thus he brushed aside all my earnest debates, as well as the further representations that I had made to him in that regard; then, as he remained unyieldingly pressing thereon, and the time for departure from the Red Sea also began to draw near rapidly, and nothing could be undertaken or carried out against this by force with any success, I was forced, seeing full well that no way out for relief was to be found in that regard, to satisfy his unreasonable extortion to the sum of From Mocha the 3rd of February 1745 of 623 Spanish reals, both for himself and his toll and other attendants, notwithstanding that previously, pursuant to the resolution taken on board the ship under date of 31 May of the past year, in order to gratify him and to encourage him to the fulfillment of his promises, he had already been offered a present from the gift goods sent along by Your Right Noblenesses, having consisted of, and to be named, at the cost of ƒ91:12:— namely: 15 lb of cloves 15 lb of cinnamon 10 lb of nutmegs 1 piece of fine cossa with gold heads 1 piece of fine mullmull 8 ounces of clove oil 8 ounces of nutmeg oil 1 pot of preserved cloves regarding the validation of the toll of the Honorable Company's sold merchandise at 3 per cent in reduction of the debt of the Royal Chamber, mentioned hereinbefore, we also had to suffer a great excess at the end of our departure, since the Governor did not pay for the canassers of powdered sugar which he had demanded at the beginning of the trade From Mocha the 3rd of February 1745 trade and had promised to pay according to market price, amounting calculated according to sale price to 135 Spanish reals and 10 cabiers, and against all protest demanded that this amount be charged to the Royal Chamber, and thus that account was only credited with 743 Spanish reals and 5 cabiers, and thus still stands indebted 18892 Spanish reals and 75 cabiers, as can be seen more fully in the journal kept of the trade; whereto I respectfully refer, in order to avoid all possible prolixity in this piece. Having determined in our meeting of the 15th of October 1743, after attentive reading of the required documents, to ceremoniously celebrate with the usual solemnities on the 18th ditto, according to the honored orders of Your High Honours and ancient usages, the presentation of His Honour, the high well-born lord Gustaaf Willem Baron van Imhoff as Governor-General of the Netherlands Indies, this was accordingly performed on that day ashore according to the tenor of the act of authorization and the form of the oath, and the following day aboard the ship Hofwegen and the sloop De Valk, in such manner as Your High Honours, if it please you, may see in more detail from our original resolution of that same date attached hereto. That the Bassora, Bushire, and Spahan servants, with relation to His Company's circular order, have likewise observed this everywhere in its full and proper form, is demonstrated by their resolutions taken on this point there, which we now have the honor to offer to Your High Honours in original herewith. And hereby to congratulate His High Honour once again in all reverence upon that illustrious and highly esteemed office, under heartfelt prayers to God Almighty that He may please to grant His High Honour in every respect enduring health and the necessary physical strength, as well as to make his extensive administration prosperous and renowned, both for the welfare of the Honorable Company and for his own glory and complete satisfaction. In which confidence we must further lay obediently before the penetrating and at the same time compassionate eyes of Your High Honours that, to our regret, it has appeared from the taxes contained in the above-mentioned highly honored missive of the 23rd of October 1743 that, for the adjacent reasons, it has been impossible to obey the orders given regarding the shortages. And first, the former Gamron councilors on account of the cash deficit after van Leipsig's death, their share having been debited to their accounts, each for the portion of fully f 1885:10:6 5/3. However, Jan George Schemming has taken the humble liberty to petition Your High Honours herewith for his discharge, and to implore a favorable assent on that petition for such detailed reasons as the extract attached thereto from our resolution of the 20th of August of the current year will further show, if it please you. Furthermore, none of all the participants can comply with the serious order of Your High Honours, as everyone is equally destitute of money and truly unable to pay his oppressive share in cash. However, the provisional warehouse master promised to liquidate his latest assessment amounting to f 1961:17:9 1/15 in heavy money within one year in four installments; but with regard to the remainder with which his salary account stands debited, he testified with forceful arguments his utter inability to make immediate payment, and the aforementioned Schemming in his turn offered all his household furniture with a sorrowful heart for sale, in order to show his goodwill hereby as well, because he entirely lacked the actual means and was prevented against his wish from making better offers. In the meantime, we collectively hope that the noble and penetrating judgment of Your High Honours, kindly noting our truly entirely destitute condition, will please reflect most favorably upon both matters; if not for a formal discharge, then at least that the sufferers may pay off their arrears gradually and remain debited for them on their accounts in the meantime. The redeemed merchant Christiaen de Haart having reimbursed in cash the f 807:9 in heavy money charged to him by invoice and already deducted from his account, as the sixth share for the visitation general of f 6056:11, and regarding the alleged neglect committed in the omitted transmission of the settlement of the brokers, he testified without hesitation that he knew no better.

Yet after mature consideration, not without reason, one has had to let the matter rest. Our further resolution thereupon. Established at the principal offices, and it was further resolved to have the said loss written off to the profit and loss account. However, since it appeared to us from a later report of the aforementioned senior merchants of the Castle of Batavia, dated the 10th of October 1743 and received here from Bassoura only on the 7th of October of the past year, that one mark of fine silver, assaying 11 deniers and 20 grains, was found to be worth f 33:5 1/9, and thus a Veli Mahameti Abbasi weighing 1/12 mark would come to stand at f 1:7:1 1/3 or 1 9/3190 percent less than that it is reckoned at 30 stivers per hundred, this was taken into mature consideration, and its contents were broadly discussed; but besides the late receipt of this paper, it also being noted that one could not well impose any further price increase upon the already complaining merchants, nor redress what was necessary without great confusion in the books everywhere in this directorship so suddenly again, this matter was therefore left in statu quo, and it was resolved and deemed proper to continue, except for the spices, with the sale and accounting of other trade wares according to the first-mentioned proposition, yet under humble prayer of excuse for this.

From Persia the 10 January 1745 concerning the free trade this forced treatment, to request Your High Excellencies to kindly inform us whether the aforesaid humble reduction squares in any way with your high and wise intentions, or rather how and what we are to do regarding this matter. Furthermore, apart from the heavy Surat rupees at thirty, item, a Spanish real at 60 and a ducaton at 78 light stivers, we shall accept all other coin species according to their content of silver and intrinsic value, and subsequently, as time and opportunity allow, we shall give the required report to the mother country per viam terra concerning the prices of the domestic manufactures for which there is still some sale here. Meanwhile, we also express our submissive gratitude for the kind notice concerning the opening of free trade and navigation to the east and west, with the restrictions placed thereon; but at the same time we cannot yet properly supply our considerations on that subject, and we shall therefore, with Your High Excellencies' pleasure, delay this point until the expected arrival of such private traders, when one will be able to resolve everything more thoroughly, as one thinks, and also carry out to the letter the strict further orders regarding the import of any contraband as well as other matters. Serving nonetheless in passing for your esteemed information, that English private vessels unloading any goods in loco must forfeit and pay in consulate fees 2 per cent for the chartered Company, one for the head officer, and one per cent by the broker who helps dispose of the merchandise. Before continuing this, however, we shall, according to custom, give place here to the required insertion of 2 extracts from the referenced missive of the Honorable Gentlemen Seventeen in the mother country under the dates of 21 April and 16 November 1742 addressed to Your High Excellencies, together with an extract demand of returns from India for the year 1744, humbly adding our respectful marginal answers set down thereon, which we have prepared according to the present condition of time and affairs in this realm, living furthermore in the humble expectation that the same may be arranged to some extent according to the desired satisfaction of Your High Excellencies, running both as follows. Extract From Persia the 10 January 1745 Extract from the missive written by the assembly of the Gentlemen Seventeen in Amsterdam on the date of 21 April 1742 to the Governor-General and the Council of India at Batavia. Our last writing to you having been of 13 December 1741 and already dispatched with several ships, we do not doubt that it will have come to your hands before the receipt of this, wherefore we refer to its contents. In our letters of 13 December last year we made known to you our opinion regarding the transfer to the mother country of insolvent estates fallen in India, as well as in what manner the Indian creditors should pursue and seek to recover their actions and claims against the same here in this country; but since on that subject, by virtue of the resolution taken by you thereon, some objections have occurred to us which seem to merit some reflection and also a further deliberation, we have approved provisionally suspending that which was written until we shall have sent you our further and final orders on that matter. Pursuant to a certain Batavia extract of 27 September regarding the treatment of insolvent estates, item a further high missive concerning the giving of credit and contracting of debts in general, the native has been everywhere warned here and caused to be warned on no account to extend credit to the Company's servants, or otherwise to resign themselves to it if, after the death of this or that person, their claim should be rejected and declared null and void, because the Honorable Company will by no means stand for or answer for its salaried servants in case of debts incurred, but commands that the creditors debate one another's claims, and consequently in case of preference and concurrence each will have to pursue their action at the place denoted alongside this. Yet neither the prohibition issued to the native against crediting anyone with anything of consequence, since the Honorable Company shall never hold itself liable for the debts of its servants, nor the aforesaid or adjacent esteemed order regarding insolvent estates and the designated duty of the Indian creditors appointed in that respect can, under Your High Favor's kind interpretation, hold ground here in this country; for the Persian, caring little or nothing for our laws, and in such an encounter with his debt claim suffering a blunt refusal, would, despite all that might be brought against it, cleverly manage to carry matters so far that we, to the disrespect of the Honorable Company and at the same time at the expense of the nation's credit, might well be forced by violence to satisfy his claim. From Their High Mightinesses the Lords States General of the United Netherlands on the 25 December 1741 having been pleased to find fit to continue and to prolong the charter provisionally for the term of one year, as will appear to Your Honours from the printed publication threefold accompanying this, we have not wished to fail to give Your Honours the necessary notice thereof by these presents, and therewith to charge Your Honours to effect the publication thereof at Batavia forthwith, as also to all the offices in India, to the end that everyone might be able to regulate themselves accordingly. We furthermore have the deserved honour of most humbly thanking Your Right Honourable Worships for the so affectionate communication wherewith it has pleased Your Right Honourable Worships to honour us herewith regarding the continuation and prolongation of the charter for the space of one year, and we further take the liberty to assure Your Right Honourable Worships with all due respect that in that regard action was taken according to the aforesaid order, just as when lately similar joyful news was received regarding the further concession of the charter for 12 years, whereof, alongside an extract from the general resolutions of this Castle of Batavia taken in Council of India on the 25 October 1743, through the good favour of Their High Mightinesses there came to hand a printed copy issued on that subject; the publication and posting whereof having been carried out here locally, both on land and in the roadstead, with all that further depended thereon, without delay for the information of everyone who belonged under the privileged company, as required; and it being utterly desirable that the Company's decayed state and trade may, through a blessed change, again be reasonably raised up and improved, the heavily pressing burdens diminished, and conversely the net profits continually increased and grown to such considerable sums wherewith the Indian offices in the former flourishing and prosperous times were able to boast. Further extract from a letter written by the Most Worshipful Lords Seventeen in the Fatherland to Their Excellencies the Governor-General and the Council of India at Batavia, dated 6 November 1742, containing the matter of: Whether one looks upon the main office or upon its subordinate offices, and that as well with relation to trade as to justice, it is everywhere very poorly conditioned, and which we clearly enough discover from Your Honours' serious and emphatic letter of 23 October 1740, that just as in the direction of Surat this is to be attributed to nothing other than to the so manifold foul deeds committed there by the Company's servants, for it also stands firm with us, as Your Honours cite in that referenced letter, that the trade at present in this direction is so decayed that in case no improvement occurs therein, it would be more advisable for the Company to abandon such a formerly so flourishing office on account of the insatiable cupidity of the servants, than to remain trading here any longer on such a footing, where the general profits of the book year 1738/9 have already diminished to a not praiseworthy sum of circa 77000 guilders, the main office at Gamron alone having in that book year yielded an excessive sum of over 87000 guilders in fewer obtained profits. That the vent of trade wares here is so small, and cannot compare to the thousandth part of former times, is in our opinion by no means to be wondered at, when one considers what fluctuating fatalities have overtaken this formerly flourishing and now devastated realm one after another for a considerable time past; and concerning the present constitution of affairs, it is our humble opinion in that regard that it is likewise not yet situated so as to be able to hope in advance for noticeable improvement, by reason of the still persisting wars against the Turks and Arabs in particular, whereby on account of the continual marching back and forth of the up and down marching undisciplined troops the trade comes to suffer very much, and whereto recently the rebellion of the notorious beglerbegi has contributed not a little, but indeed the most; the new sardar of the lowlands currently encamped again just outside the town with 12000 able-bodied men, both foot soldiers and cavalry, who in all likelihood, just like the locusts in the year 1738, will first eat up everything around here before they depart to the opposite shore and quit this plagued town, in execution of their charge, which consists not only of surprising the Holoas Arabs (a nation dwelling on the beaches and likewise hostile to the Persians) and dragging them off to Khorasan with their families, but also subsequently making an end there to the Muscat rule and causing its lawful prince to bend under the Persian yoke, etc. These aforesaid continuing troubles being solely the true incidental cause of the utterly decayed trade in this realm, and no favourable recovery is to be expected before and until the same come to cease. How it was formerly pleased by the previous rulers here, such we leave to their account, but we must express the required reverence that we are unable to devise any other means for the restoration of commerce than that one will always observe doing everything possible, and framing our demands in such a manner as one judges necessary and justifiable according to the circumstances of the times, heartily wishing to see the so greatly desired change for the better fulfilled shortly through the merciful blessing of heaven, and at the same time to be so fortunate.

From Persia, 10 January 1745 to help the decayed state of the Honourable Company in these parts back to a strong foundation through a considerable increase of profits and no less a curtailment of expenses, just as we then, with all ready willingness and in that same obliged zeal as honour- and loyalty-loving servants, will not overlook any chance if something might be gained anywhere, and with which we, as humans who possess no more than human qualities, hope in humility to be able and permitted to suffice. We judge, then, that Your Honour did well to recall the Director Koenad from this Directorate to Batavia, but we are extremely astonished that Your Honour saw fit to appoint in his place the merchant and former Basra resident George Gutchi, a man whom Your Honour, after all, saw fit to make reimburse to the Honourable Company a notable sum of ƒ86912:10 that the treasury was short because of him, and on which grounds Your Honour had him placed under arrest, had all his goods seized and inventoried, and sent the same along with him to Batavia stripped of quality and salary, while also instructing the Fiscal to take action against him in that matter. We are extremely astonished at such a proceeding, arrived on the Gamron roads alongside the aforementioned Gutchi on 17 March 1741 in loco as commander, but died before he could obtain a general transfer from his predecessor Carel Coenad, which common fate befell him on 28 June thereafter; who was subsequently succeeded after the departure of the aforementioned Mr. Coenad by the then trade bookkeeper Simon Clement, who was likewise snatched away by death on the first of October 1743, whereupon the Fiscal Emanuel de Poorter assumed the governance pro tempore, and the latter was afterwards replaced from Batavia by the present Commander Abraham van Welle, appointed thereto on 24 April and having appeared on 24 July of the past year per the ship 's-Heerenarendskerke From Persia, 10 January 1745 and all the more so since it has nowhere appeared to us that the aforementioned Gutchi has yet cleared himself in this regard, and that there was so much time between his appointment as Persian Commander and his case being placed into the hands of the Fiscal that the latter was able to institute his action against him, whereby he was then withdrawn from the hands of justice to a noticeable injury thereof, and whereby one also, on the one hand, gives very great offense to good servants and, on the other hand, a special encouragement to bad servants, as well as an extraordinarily facile means to Gutchi himself to recover the aforementioned missing and payable funds within a short time. Such a proceeding is all too conspicuous not to be seen and concluded therefrom that something hidden lies enclosed here as well, which, should such be necessary, must be investigated, and the reasons that gave rise to such an improper promotion of the aforementioned Gutchi must be brought to our knowledge at the first opportunity, so that Your Honour may then let us have further resolutions on this matter. who further recommends himself with deep respect to Your Highly Honourable pleasing thoughts. From Persia, the 10th of January 1745 Through the reaching of an accommodation, a remaining debt had been satisfied, and the entire arrear in cash, amounting to the sum of ƒ16653:6:3 1/2 pennies which had been ƒ17870:1:10: — you were ordered to pay as compensation, reduced to ƒ13198:13: — through the sale of a fine diamond from the estate and the collection of outstanding debts to his successor Pieter Aalmis, as also having had a key to the cash, wherewith recently the former Gamron council members, subject to their recourse against Pieter Aalmis, presently head there, have again been burdened by their High Excellencies; inasmuch as some of the same, the nature of this so enormous and fraudulent act, having been practiced entirely without the least knowledge of the aforementioned Aalmis who, as secunde, likewise had a key to the cash, being quite as paradoxical and suspicious as your High Honorable Worships will be pleased to observe. Consequently, the aforesaid Aalmis, upon his appearance in loco from Isfahan, whither two persons were recently dispatched from our council to investigate the suspect condition of the further affairs there as well as to lift that damaging trading post, will be duty-bound to be interrogated, and your Honorable Worships will be elucidated to the best of our ability as soon as possible concerning that mysterious and evil matter. We then indeed approve that imposed compensation to that extent; but as we cannot comprehend how such frauds can be committed so easily, and who knows for how long in succession, without this, if it may be believed, being discovered by someone who, expressly to prevent such frauds, also holds a key to the cash, we likewise desire to be somewhat further elucidated concerning such mysteries. Regarding the text beside this, concerning justice, things are in such a poor state in this directorship that Your Honor has imposed on the Gamron Council of Justice, on account of their formal and passionate procedures without any order, rule, or measure, at the expense of another’s honor, life, property, and blood, without prejudice to the rights of those who were so enormously injured by that court, on each member head for head, for the benefit of the diaconate poor, a minor fine of 6 months' salary for so manifold committed irregularities. It is declared that, while observing all possible precautions, we shall endeavor to correct the errors formerly committed, and indeed carefully guard ourselves against such bad reputation, and stripped of all passions that a judge must shun in the administration of justice in civil as well as criminal cases, to regulate ourselves each time carefully according to the prescribed laws, edicts, and ordinances, as well as according to the opinion of authentic writers, so that upon occurring occasion everyone may be allotted their due and merit according to decency, in such manner as divine and human laws come to command. We well understand that the ignorance of almost all the members in the judicial council at the subordinate trading posts in matters concerning justice is exceedingly great, and on account of the actual employment that these people hold it can hardly be otherwise, which to that extent also merits its excuse; but when justice is administered passionately and without paying heed to law or statutes, it becomes corrupt and exceedingly punishable, so that from whatever side one views this directorship, it is from the skull of its head to the soles of its feet full of iniquity and wicked deeds, and only to be cured with the appointment, at least regarding the supreme authority, of servants who are found to be of candor and proven loyalty, and of whom one may rest assured that they can remain honest; for if that happens, as we indeed have well-founded hope for, it will not depend solely on a better purchase of copper wares in Gamron than in Basra to the amount of more than 4 per cent, nor also on securing as many imperial thalers of 8 mamoodies or ƒ3:12:4 as may be obtained, nor on the sale of some dates at the western trading posts, which in itself is also good, and one must always labor to dispense such specie upon which the least loss falls for the Company, but then this directorship shall once again yield such profits with which it was permitted to boast in earlier days. From Persia, the 10th of January 1745 crops, gums, oils, also minerals or animals were in any way profitable, which could be used here in this country and could be sold with profit, Your Honours may send over a small quantity thereof as a sample, adding their names, uses, and effects. We shall never fail to satisfy, besides the aforementioned orders, also to the best of our ability, and thus upon the discovery of such a product, to consult with respect further with their High Excellencies regarding this, respectfully adding the necessary report expressed herein, and thereupon awaiting their highly wise approval. The small chest covered with gunny, marked No. & 1 and containing Persian silk for the Fatherland as a sample, has arrived safely via Batavia by land. We have had the same examined by some merchants who are knowledgeable in trade, It is very pleasant and agreeable for us to learn of the good receipt and proper delivery of this small chest with Persian sample silk sent to the Fatherland, thanking Your High Venerable Honours therefore not only for the most generous communication thereof, but furthermore also in all submission for the timely dispatch in substance of the report given by some sensible merchants concerning the diverse prices of diverse assortments of Persian silk, from which, however, one here can as yet draw no benefit, who have given us this following report in substance thereof, namely: Gilamse No. 1, first sort, No. 2, second sort, No. 3, third sort, purchase price on average f 12:12:-, that these here in this country, in sales on average, would bring no more than f 5:- or 16 to 17 schellingen. Restiferbaste Letter H, first sort, costs purchase price f 10:- per pound, that the same is indeed of good quality, but here in this country at sale would only yield f 5:2:- to f 5:8:- or 17 to 18 schellingen. Ditto Letter B, second sort, costs purchase price f 9:-:-, that this is not restiserbasti, but of the sort ardasetti, and of good quality for that, but that at sale here in this country it would fetch no higher price than f 4:14:- or 14 schellingen. From Persia, the 19th of January 1745 considering that upon our frequent proposal and plan for a contract to be entered into concerning the Persian silk, made to the King, one has until today been able to obtain nothing else, and this at the cost of various small presents, than an embellished batch of Royal regams, in which His Majesty repeatedly expresses himself very politely, and also requires a capable person skilled in the language for the aforementioned purpose (which, however, on all sorts of specious pretexts has been dismissed for various reasons), while we meanwhile have been referred to Mhamed Tackie Chan, and now recently again after the bloody fall of this chief rebel with his faction, to Mosaffer Alie Chan regarding this, to confer with the same and to enter into a mutual engagement regarding it, concerning which negotiations were indeed held with the first-mentioned and a copy translation under No. 34 was written to His Majesty, but nothing further of consequence has followed or been stated; however, of the success of the negotiation with the latter, one cannot yet judge because he is currently absent and with the fleet at Bouches. We have nevertheless impressed upon the departed Spahan commissioners, among other things if they should by chance be invited to a contract, what is required, and provided them with the papers relating thereto, in order to regulate themselves according to those instructions, all the more because the Prince recently again summoned a person skilled in the language to court for the concluding of a contract. But since one cannot enter into this without the special qualification of their High Excellencies at Batavia, nor undertake such an expedition, whether the outcome answers the objective or not, without excessive costs, one will therefore request their aforementioned High Excellencies in all subservience to furnish us regarding this with positive orders. From Persia, the 10th of January 1745 sort, and for that at sale here in this country no more would be spent than f 3:12:- to f 3:18:- or 12 to 13 schellingen. It appears to us incomprehensible, indeed almost impossible, how those purchase prices can run so high, for how then would the Persians here in this country be able to turn over that silk with profit, which nevertheless does happen, and therefore there will possibly reside an error in this calculation, or the specie We are quite willing to believe that although the how and such purchase of the silk, upon which the Persians still profit when transporting to Europe, cannot be ascertained, this nevertheless happens; but since they during the course of a hundred years have always been close to home, and can certainly keep the master and best silk spinners bound to them by advances, those merchants notoriously can also scrape together much cheaper than others and in that way still calculate a profit in the Fatherland. However, now that a new English Company resides at Gilang, it is beyond question that they will cause each other reciprocally all possible damage, and will undoubtedly cause, or have already long since caused, a rise in the market.

Rhubarb Gum Sarcocolla Gum Sagapenum Gum Galbanum: 4090 lb, that is four thousand and ninety pounds, according to what was noted on the demand for the year 1742. The brokers were at once urgently instructed to procure these alongside the said gum in good and sound quality, yet at reasonable prices. They promised in this regard to use every means to procure the same according to the demand in quantity and on the aforesaid basis. Likewise, shortly thereafter, they happened to obtain both assortments and remain accountable for the uniformity of the purchase, amounting per 6 lb the man: the gum ammoniac at 8 mamudis or 2 guilders 8 stivers, and the gum galbanum per 6 lb man 20 mamudis or 6 guilders; thus one with the other, together with the expenses incurred thereon, 5849 guilders 16 stivers. Persian Red Earth: 600 lb for a sample. Of these there are two different sorts. The best is soft and greasy like bole, and of a very high color; the other sort is hard and stony, and of no value. We therefore demand only the first sort, which we are informed can be obtained locally practically for nothing, only for the labor costs, and here in the country is well worth 15 guilders. It can serve as ballast in the ships. That two sorts of Persian red earth are to be found here is as yet unknown to us, but the red earth that is found here is sometimes shipped just as it is produced by nature, and then again after it has been properly purified by water. This, in all likelihood, will also constitute the first greasy sort, of which your Right Honorable Worships are pleased to request 600 lb as a sample. To that end, this quantity of the unpurified raw materials has been gradually rendered and cleaned in batches at a cost of labor and other expenses of 30 guilders 6 stivers, in order to be able to prepare it as far as possible to the high-value requirement for which it was requisitioned. Having thus obtained it, that quantity is now also forwarded with the bearer of this letter, living in humble expectation of being able to provide your Right Honorable Worships with the desired satisfaction in due time by this treatment, and consequently to be favored by the Indian High Government with 1 quartermaster and 6 ordinary sailors, in order that, in case larger quantities thereof should be demanded in the course of time, they may be employed to purify this earth, which takes quite some effort, and then to erect for them, for keeping that work going, a small shed about one large mile from this town, approximately at the place where pure water is found.
