No. 29. Humbly to impart that regarding the discharge of the ship 's Heeren Arendskerke, which arrived on the 24th of July Anno passato, it had already been discussed the next day, and the skipper Pieter Corver had also then been ordered, in order to prevent thefts between the ship and the shore, to place each time a vigilant supervisor with 5 to 6 common sailors on the open craft, and to enjoin upon them a close supervision or otherwise to announce that they would have to pay for what came short: one could nevertheless not get properly underway with that vessel until the 12th of August of the said year, nor get finished earlier than about primo December; the skipper testifying meanwhile pursuant to the resolution of the 20th of August not to have received any crew for the sent country-craft, but the skipper can conveniently spare ours; yet the contrary thereof appearing explicitly from the very respected missive of Your High Right Honours dated the 2nd of May of the same year, one thought it best to wait until his departure, and then to lift the necessary people for that purpose, in so far as such can conveniently be done. From Persia the 10th of August anno 1745. Our thanksgiving of ship and souls. officers, differing considerably from the Batavian receipt, and therefore was not known from the sent invoice. Regarding the aforementioned shortages, their continuation, and under the required reverence, some of us must also confess by experience during the voyage hither that their origin may possibly be attributed somewhat to the bad condition of the cooperage, but especially also to the aftermath of a severe and continuous tempest, whereby the officers were then absolutely prevented for some time from inspecting it and applying the necessary countermeasures, which, subject to benevolent correction, regarding preservation before God still deserves some kind of indulgence, and alongside other circumstances at least prompts us to thank the All-Ruler infinitely for His provident protection and the merciful preservation of ship and souls, wonderfully shining forth therein, that notwithstanding the pumps were repeatedly clogged by the constant interference of a quantity of forge coals, and the water stood always some feet high in the hold without anyone knowing, nevertheless no mournful consequence resulted therefrom, but everything so far was preserved and, God be praised, brought over safely. We therefore consider ourselves obliged humbly to request Your High Excellencies once again with humble prayers, upon a closer examination and finding of matters, to be so very kind as to release the repeatedly mentioned ship's deceased from such debit as calculated on the usual footing amounts together to f 21449: 4:—, whereof to the skipper Pieter Corver for ¾ comes f 16086: 18:— and to the deceased chief mate Albert Verstraten for ¼ comes f 5362: 6:— heavy money, although in accordance with orders and in deduction of which there has already been claimed from his sold estate by the Fiscal ratione officii, and counted into the cash for the security of the Company's guarantee, f 1714: 19: 3 19/25, in order to remain there in reserve until the honored orders of Your High Excellencies shall further elucidate us in that regard, while in the meantime for the surplus of f 3647: 6: 12 29/25 the deceased's last pay account was encumbered; and subsequently on the 26th of March last by the aforesaid skipper, with a sufficient ship's declaration dated mid-month prior, it was demonstrated that his vessel was completely repaired and in full condition to sail wherever one wished. Therefore, this could not be avoided without causing friction, and for other reasons detailed in the aforementioned resolution it was thought proper, with no other aim than to seek and bring about what was most beneficial for the Honourable Company, to present him and his favourites with a handsome sum of f 3458:8: in- and out-buying f 6209:16:—. The interpreter who had been dispatched thither, in order to express regret over the displeasure shown by him and his angry utterances concerning our capacity, brought back in reply that his instigator, Mhamed Bakkerbeek (who, after so many given tokens of an imperious temper, is reasonably suspected of having incited his master to all these evil proceedings), had let slip to him that it would be no trouble for the Khan to assault the Company’s lodge, as he had plenty of people for that purpose, etc. And since the Sultan Amier Mheer Alie has always shown very many proofs of an obliging affection for Your Honor’s Company as an old friend, and has served us sufficiently as a spy, it was therefore judged equitable on the 20th of January of the past year to gratify this gentleman with a small present, as he was then about to depart for his country, Achmeddie, to the amount of f 86: 12: 8 at cost and f 190: 18: 8 at sale price, considering that one must occasionally cherish faithful friends (like white ravens in this country) through a substantial renewal and nurturing of friendship, as their helpfulness is always of use, so that it might well have happened that one would have been at a loss again for that gentleman’s assistance upon the feared return of the chief rebel, who had quietly retreated from the city with a muffled drum, without anyone knowing whither; leaving behind at the same time his instigator and evil counselor Mhamed Backer Beek with some troops, upon whom, before his departure, he had with great trouble granted us an obligation amounting to 15,000 mans in satisfaction to us for 5,000 mans of iron, which came to 3 or 4 mans per 6 lbs. more than this mineral was formerly sold for. However, the satisfaction for the delivered cordage did not seem likely to follow so readily, since regarding the cost thereof, amounting to f [illegible], he constantly referred us to his brother, and the latter, flatly refusing payment, repeatedly referred us back to the monarch in insolent terms. To the latter, the matter was subsequently pointed out emphatically by petition, and because of the closure of the direct routes, the opportunity was requested through the route of Boucheer via the Verindian Mosasser Aliechan, under the necessary notification, for a speedy dispatch thereof to the court. But in case of difficulty or in the absence of His Highness, the commissioners were instructed to return the said papers by the chaloup, or to send them on to Bassara, so that, if the monarch were still alive, they could be safely dispatched from there to the court near Bagdaad. Furthermore, a translated copy of the said petition was sent to Ispahan, so that it might promptly be translated back into Persian there and be handed to the king in secret, regarding which a prudent conduct was recommended to the residents in order to achieve our aim, all being broadly and fully described in the cited resolution of the 20th of January. But from that of the 9th of March and shortly thereafter, it appears that on the 6th prior, a secret courier arrived here from the frequently mentioned Sardhar from Chieraas, with letters to us, the English, and the French, as well as to the oft-mentioned Naib and the overseer of the king's fleet, Molla Aliecsah. Ours was accompanied by a royal mandate granted to that Sardhar, with the recommendation to prevent the rebel from fleeing, to which end he placed the ships at our disposal. However, examining the seal of the letter closely, it was suspected that it was not the genuine one of the Sardhar, which made us think that this might well be an invention of others to test us and play a trick on us. The courier was therefore questioned closely on everything, but we learned nothing other than that the Sardhar had orally instructed him to tell the Dutch that if they did not deem it advisable to deliver the letters to the English and the natives, they could then act with them according to their own judgment. This report again seemed suspicious to us, since the letter made no mention of it. However, this unexpected contingency did not in any way satisfy the ordinary servitude to which one must submit at the Nowruz festival, and on the 21st of March recently passed, when this is solemnly celebrated, we were once again compelled not only to gratify the present city regents with that, but in addition, pursuant to the resolution taken on the 26th thereafter, to regale them with a small matter of 262 guilders, 2 stivers, and 8 pennings purchase price, or 586 guilders, 0 stivers, and 8 pennings selling price; on which account, as well as regarding all the aforementioned orders, we once again humbly supplicate the desired approval from Your Excellencies, just as we are also obliged to do regarding another expenditure of twenty-five specie gold ducats, reckoned at 19 mahmudis each, which amount was spent and delivered on the 28th of March last for the account of the Honorable Company to a royal courier, who was the bearer of a favorable mandate and consequently worthy of this tip. The interpreter David Sahid, formerly sent out to obtain the free silk trade and upon his return from Isfahan called to account in our session of the 30th of August 1743, but not being well able to make his defense regarding the delay en route in the Dutch language, declared himself in French on the 16th of November thereafter; but as not all members understood this language either, this apologetic writing was handed over to the bookkeepers De Crane and Schoffier for translation, and finally presented in Dutch only on the 22nd of March of the past year. From Persia, the 10th of August, Anno 1745. provided, and had further recommended to notify us in somewhat good time in case of a desired result, so that this might conveniently be submitted to Your High Excellencies at the first opportunity, or otherwise to enable us to request further orders as to how one shall have to answer the King's demand, once again made for the sending up of a person to the court; the more so, because upon the return of the interpreter from Lhaar concerning this commerce, one was still none the wiser, and has remained so until today. Yet the bearers of the aforesaid regams, for the preservation of the Company's high esteem, were also presented, according to the custom of the country and previous usage (which principally, and in such a case, have arisen sufficiently into a law), with 50 pieces of gold ducats, or ƒ285:—:—, and the spiritual judge was satisfied with ƒ44:12:8 for authenticating the necessary documents relating to the silk trade; purchase and sale expenses ƒ71:13:—, so that everything has been set down obediently in accordance with the inserted translations and memoranda in the aforementioned estimate. Nevertheless, for the sake of propriety, the deliverer thereof was at that time rewarded with a small gratuity, included among other things in such list of gifts as was presented at the resolution of the 30th of September of the past year.
