At least we shall never fail to From Persia, the 30th of August 1745. hope for effect, and at least speak of our formal demand, of which one has always, among other things, hoped to negotiate such high prices to lighten the burdens, so far as can possibly be done without prejudice to the sales; by no means doubting that this same method will likewise bring about a great change for the better at the subordinate factories, according to the calculation of the proposition expressed in more detail in the aforementioned resolution of the 26th of March of the past year. With our presently departing formal demand for merchandise and otherwise, which we have the honour to present herewith to Your High Excellencies, we request with much respect that we may be accommodated therewith according to your esteemed pleasure, this being regulated approximately as if the time of peace were reviving, and trade in the future would flourish more than it has done for some time past; although rumours are circulating again in the said manner that, with the siege of Bassora by land and water, the war between the Persian and the Ottoman was about to commence anew, of which, however, no sufficient evidence 85 From Persia, the 10th of August anno 1745. with a request for pardon regarding the incomplete fulfillment of the goods demanded here evidence yet confirms the evident truth. And therefore, if Your High Excellencies please, we persist with the present humble petition for this directorship, since most of the goods brought in recently have already been sent abroad, and it would certainly be hard if, should the realm become peaceful and sales unexpectedly begin to pick up, one could not benefit from it due to a lack of merchandise. The brokers have also now, as always, been urged to effect the fulfillment of all respective demands in various respects early and completely; but since their efforts in response to the answered home-country and other extract demands have in various respects produced no desired effect, one must again implore Your High Excellencies for a favourable extension until the autumn, when Oosterhout is expected back from Bassora and hopefully we shall then be in a position to better keep our obligated promises. Your High Excellencies will, however, from the demonstration of the previous, latest, and most recently dispatched act of liquidation From Persia, the 10th of August 1745. and present state of the brokers liquidation closed with the said factory under the last of September of the past year, have already perceived how much they actually still owed the treasury after deducting their credit items, since an error was committed at that time, and in the letter the outstanding amount of the last of August prior was taken, amounting to Ms 563431:18 or ƒ 169029:11: 1/5, instead of what they were in arrears on that date, to a sum of Mams 333078 1/5 or ƒ99923:10:6 1/5; it can therefore, with a humble request for pardon in this regard, duly appear from the further treasury account of the last of June prior, annexed hereto and handled at the decree of the 13th of July last, that their general debit then amounted to ƒ440669:16:11 1/25, and after subtraction of the credit of ƒ 178471:—: 11 1/5 now amounts to ƒ262198: 16:—, the increase of which also arises to some extent from daily sales, but which is to come in without any difficulty, since one cannot conveniently demand the money from the merchants before the receipt of the purchased goods, but rather after delivery has been made, and we at the same time in that

But Aalmis remitted the same anew with a 20 percent increase, thus amounting to 360 thonns, together with a copy of an executed bond promising to pay yet an additional 25 percent more in case it came back again. However, the loss of f 221:— on an incurable horse, which stood in the books at f 425:— and was sold for f 204:—, was allowed to pass because of the explanation given in writing, and likewise written off because the oath had been taken for it. 2 lb mace or 3 7/31 percent short on 62 lb 4 ounces; 6 cloves without stalks or 2 percent short on 200 lb. From Persia, the 10th of August 1745 The gift to Galieds Chan and Mahab Alie Beecq, amounting to a purchase cost of ƒ 562:2:, was likewise ordered to be left to their own account, partly because it exceeded the purchase price purposely omitted, and partly, and especially, because this was spent without our prior knowledge and in the manner of Wissendas, which went directly against our competition, which indeed entailed doing a small present for the benefit of the Honorable Company and the furtherance of the departure, but in no way for private interests. Accordingly, the ordinary and extraordinary expenses of the months of December of the past year and January of this year, totaling ƒ 2371:10, have been deferred to the gracious pleasure of Your High Nobilities, because our lawful statement for various items actually exceeds the previous examples; and therefore, for the better, the one interpreter David Sahit was discharged, and in consideration of the economy, the request made for the purchase of the tenth horse was refused, although in view of the several riding animals standing in the stable, the stated 15 mans a month was continually agreed to as an emergency aid; and the costly preparations for which the commissioners, through a premature repair of the horse harnesses and travel necessities, exceeded their bounds to the amount of ƒ 288:12, were likewise condoned this time, as well as their faux pas committed in the drawing of a bill of exchange amounting to ƒ 1500, because they forgot the names of the drawers and holders, thereby causing us some embarrassment; however, the presenters thereof appearing shortly afterward, and being paid on the appointed due date without agio, we shall not fail to notify them of what is required in this regard. Their small supply of cash as of the last day of January last, amounting to ƒ 1020:14:5 1/5, will thus be increased again out of precaution by a bill of exchange of 10000 mans, in order to avoid by this means of precaution such inconveniences as were recently experienced from the unthrifty residents. The trade account books sent over, closed after three months from the 1st of September to the last day of November of the past year, when the commissioners arrived there and took over the office, upon inspection now turned out better than those of the financial year 1743/4; also, the sets of royal men's and women's robes, along with the other goods, although remitted without a sum of money, were nevertheless for the most part, except for 6 muskets that are still expected, received reasonably well. Later reports of the 1st of April last report as news the re-appointment of Mahamed Takie Chan as governor of that place, regarding which we took good note on the 3rd of May last and at the same time devised what was thought proper to avoid ship loans upon his arrival, but this rumor requires further confirmation. From Kirman, since our last humble advices, there is also nothing to note, except that Anwannees bound himself in writing for the advanced 300 tomans made known in the resolution of the 8th of January last, and on the 4th of May just mentioned set out on the journey thither, wherefore a satisfactory execution of the intention is not doubted.

Just as we trust we shall enjoy the same favor regarding the domestic management, pursuant to our noted and repeated resolution of 30 August 1743, when the taking of inventory of all administrations—except that of the trade warehouses, performed shortly before at the end of May, and now delayed on account of great loss and wastage until the arrival of the new warehouse master—was, according to yearly custom, completed before, and Bijlevelt confirmed in the dispenser's office; and considering the small remainder of rice, being 973 lb, and the situation at the bazaar, it was resolved to let all servants on land receive cash instead, at 1 1/2 mahmudis for 6 lb, but to further authorize the said dispenser to supply the said remainder to the sloop's crew provisionally, and in addition, to prevent the utmost embarrassment as well as for the convenience of the sick, and in reserve for the sloop, if possible, to purchase and secure another 4000 lb of that highly necessary food at 2 mahmudis for 6 lb, since neither the hospital nor the sloop's hands could conveniently do without it. And whereas the clerks subsequently insisted on their monthly ration of rice, they may let it stand until a better time, stating that, due to the excessive scarcity of this grain, they consider the equivalent in money impossible to subsist upon, their request was therefore also deemed fair, in accordance with our resolution taken on 16 September of the preceding year. And because in the dispensary, wherein at the same time the findings of the dispenser served, there was nothing to object to regarding the findings, which, alongside the unfit state of some craft and cash tools, clearly indicated the shortweights and short measures on diverse goods and provisions during the course of the book-year 1742/3; but since in that regard no excesses were noted, and on account of the reasons cited for it they were all passed and written off in the books, we shall in this matter, with Your Excellencies' pleasure, at present supersede a special recital of the written-off posts and humbly appeal to the tenor of the just-mentioned resolution. But in order to clear all warehouses and this administration at once of different useless and unserviceable effects, as they could no longer serve any useful purpose, From Persia, 10 August 1745. to send to India's headquarters. One subsequently has the repair costs of the armory, upon a report of the testing of weights and the apothecary shop, also passed the artillery goods, and had the fire engine improved, but the spoiled prunes could no longer be made good. it was resolved, as well in this instance as in other later sessions of 14 May, 30 September, 25 November 1744, also 10 January and March of the past year, to dispatch all such untaxed goods to Your Excellencies at India's headquarters, and not to liquidate them here into the profit and loss account, so that the same are now sent over by the bearer hereof and consist of such kinds as are collected and noted on the outgoing memorandum thereof. The half-yearly repair account of six months, meanwhile also presented by the dispenser and submitted in the cited session for revision, and the costs necessarily expended on repairing the defects of the Company's lodge from the end of February to the end of the year 1743 having been extracted, amounting in all to the sum of f 2681:4:—, and considering that the masonry and woodwork here in this country require continuous repair and unavoidable supervision, this expense was consequently also allowed to pass under that heading; and furthermore, upon the submitted report concerning the inventory of the armory, also the inventory of the apothecary shop, testing and confronting of the weights, had nothing of consequence to object to, under the further approval of the executing commissioners who took the inventory of the apothecary shop as well as the artillery and ammunition goods, and found nothing over or short, but everything complete and undamaged, so that according to the findings of the inventory and inspection of the equipment goods, conforming to what was reported in writing, everything also turned out well; and our resolution was to follow thereupon, to write off through the equipment account what was consumed in a full year in the service of the Honorable Company, and to send the unserviceable items without monetary value to India's headquarters; further, to have the defects discovered during the inspection and testing of the fire engine, with its accessories, repaired immediately, so as not to be burdened with a machine that looked like something to the eye, but was in fact nothing.
