Original letter written by the Highly Esteemed Lord Commander Corijn Stevens, together with the Council here, to their aforementioned High Honours, dated as of this day. 2. Copy letter written by the departing Highly Esteemed Lord Reinicus Siersma and the above-mentioned Commander, together with the Council, to the same as above. 3. Four petitions, namely: 1. From the Chief Surgeon of the Company's hospital, Louis Quintin Martinsart, to obtain an improvement in salary, along with the expiration of time. 1. From the Balinese Lieutenant Allie, who humbly begs thereby for his advancement to Captain-Lieutenant with the salary pertaining thereto. 3. From the Jew and Company's merchant Ezechiel Rabbij, supplicating thereby very humbly that, in consideration of what is contained therein, he may be granted discharge from the payment for the known 400 cases of Japanese bar copper. 1351 From Mallabaar the 23rd April 1748. Memorandum of such write-offs on the Company's relaxed trade merchandise and other goods as have successively occurred since the first of January until the last of March of this year. 6. A separate bundle of papers concerning what was supplied to the ships, together with the findings of the surpluses and deficits discovered in the discharged cargoes of the ships, etc., with the decisions taken regarding that matter since the 2nd of February until the 4th of this month. 7. A bundle of copy town Daily Register, beginning the 1st of January and ending the 31st of December of the past year, provided with an index. 8. Copy translation of an ola written by the King of Cochim to the Highly Esteemed Lord Commander Corijn Stevens and received the 13th of this month, concerning the association between the present regent and the rebel or second Prince of Berckencoer. 9. Conference held between the Highly Esteemed Lords Reinicus Siersma, departing, and Corijn Stevens, present Commander, with the Cannaal of Angecannaal, under date of the 9th of February last. Extracts from the letters successively received from the aforementioned Overseer, dated the 2nd, 7th, 15th, 19th, 22nd, 25th, and 27th of March last, concerning the seizures placed by the Crown Prince of Cochim on a certain Company right named Alelbaram, etc. 12. Two copy translations of olas written by the second Prince of Cochim to the Jew and Company's merchant Ezechiel Rabbij and received the 22nd and 29th of March last, also speaking of the aforementioned seizure. 13. Extract written hither by the Junior Merchant and Chief Godefridus Weijerman together with the Council at Cannanoor, the 26th of March last, containing the request made by the Prince Regent of Collastrij to be assisted with 40000 ropias to discharge his overdue contribution to the King of Cannara, for which Palearesoe ragia previously remained surety. 14. Copy of judicial documents against the demoted quartermaster Arent Geltstaat, who crossed over. No. 17. Memorandum regarding the cost of the solid granary at Quilon to the sum of ƒ15693. 9. 8. Memorandum of such merchandise as was bought and sold during the book-year 1747, and upon which, pursuant to the highly respected authorization of Their Excellencies the Supreme Indian Government, 2 and 5 percent has been allotted to the servants. No. 19. Muster roll of 17 soldiers who have been placed on the ship Goidschalxoort, among whom are two incurables, as appears from a surgical report annexed thereto. No. 20. With our humble annual address of the 31st of January of this year, we had the happiness dutifully to present to Your Excellencies the state of Malabar with the required respect, as well as on the 1st of March following, the departure of the retired Commander Reinicus Siersma with the ship Patmos to Ceylon, in order to obtain passage from there to Your Excellencies through the kindness of the Right Honorable and Valiant Lord Julius Valentijn Stein van Gollenesse; we live therefore in the hope that those papers and the retired Commander, together with such goods as it was possible for us to satisfy upon Your Excellencies' demand, will already long since have been delivered, and since the time has come again to report to Your Excellencies with a subsequent letter regarding what has occurred here on the Coast since then, we shall under favorable interpretation (after the first signatory will have prayed Your Excellencies, if he should happen to fail in this his first description, to please look upon it with a favorable eye, under respectful assurance that he will never fail 1357 From Malabar, the 23rd of April 1728. to exert all his efforts to render the required satisfaction to Your Excellencies in the future through attentiveness) commit the same to paper as briefly and succinctly as matters will in any way allow, wherefore one will make a beginning with the princes of this country, passing over those of whom at present there is nothing to say, so as not to make this too voluminous; but before we proceed thereto, although we would gladly treat of what has further occurred in the master's service, we find ourselves obliged to congratulate the Right Honorable and Highly Esteemed Lord Jacob Mossel with profound respect on His Honour's accession to the highly distinguished office of First Councillor and Director-General, with the heartfelt wish that it may please Jehovah God further to overflow His Honour with the fullness of His precious blessings to the welfare of the Netherlands Company, as well as with special honor and glory for His Honour's person. From Malabar, 23 April 1748 Regarding the King of Porca, there is nothing else to report than that this prince continues to reside in an impoverished state with his family at Palaerty in the Kingdom of Cochin, being supported by the same as well as by the Zamorin with some small subsistence allowances in addition to what has been granted to him on the part of the Honorable Company, placing his hope solely upon the Honorable Company. And concerning the King of Porca, there is also presently nothing to report, as this prince likewise, according to the recently concluded contract, is now very quiet with his merchants having bound to him two candies of pepper passes, of which mention was made in our humble annual reports, and we have The present third prince of Berkencoer, who still holds the government in hand and informed us by ola of 13 March of this year that Travancore intended to restore the rebel prince in the said realm, or otherwise that, according to the previously made treaty, the arrears of fanams would have to Malabar, 23 April 1748 What we have written to that prince in answer have to be paid, provided also that he, the prince, should furthermore be obliged to meet the prince of Travancore and obey his orders. At his request, he was informed in answer that we deem it best for His Highness to reconcile with the rebel, and thus to prevent the domination that Travancore seeks to exercise in the said realm, unless he should be in a position to keep the aforementioned rebel prince as well as the Raja of Travancore out of it. But we received in reply that the Honorable Company was his sole protector, and that he did not doubt that Your Excellencies, together with the King of Cochin, would still have sufficient power at hand to protect him somewhat, adding that the King of Travancore had no reason to bring his party into the realm, and promising that if such should happen, to drive him out with the help of friends and allies. But since then, we have heard regarding that realm, by a letter of 30 March from the post-holding sergeant at Calichaaij, Malabar, 23 April 1748 Writings from Bitjoen regarding the prince to be found there Jacob van den Berg, sent hither from Bitjoen, that the rebel prince will nevertheless be installed therein by His Travancorean Highness. Thereupon the first undersigned sent an ola to the Cochin crown-bearer, in order, according to the intention of the Right Honorable and worshipful Mr. van Gollenesse, for the well-being of the Master's service, to bring about an amicable association between this regent and the rebel, requesting His Highness to summon both to court for that purpose, which, according to his closer notification, had also taken place by an ola of summons, as appears from an ola sent hither to the undersigned, to which the answer of the Commandeur, which is among the inserted olas, was entered into the register under No. 8 by resolution of the 9th of this month concerning the matter. Pursuant to the orders of Your High Excellencies by letter of 5 November 1743, we have not failed to correspond on this point with the Right Honorable and worshipful Mr. Malabar, 23 April 1748 Which sentiment the prince regent of Berkenkoer at the court of Cochin van Gollenesse, as was also done by the departed Commandeur Siersma by separate missive of the 16th of last year. But His Honorable aforesaid gave us to know by letter of 6 January of this year that it would be better at least to direct matters in such a way that the so-called rebel prince should again reconcile himself with the Honorable Company, in order thereby to effect his restoration to some extent and remain grateful to the Honorable Company. We shall not fail to guide ourselves according to that wise sentiment in this juncture of times, as soon as it is seen to become critical, or if the present prince continues to present his impotence to us, he having already appeared at the Cochin court upon the said summons. From Malabar, 23 April 1748 He, with Your Right Honourables' favourable approval, has tacked over to another course, in order, if it were feasible, to induce him to allow his tolls to be farmed out together with those of the Honourable Company for his account, provided that he, the prince, should defer to the judgement of Your Right Honourables regarding the percentage that should be allocated to him from that, in consideration that his tolls have been markedly benefited by Your Right Honourables' kindness in opening up free navigation, as with that opening more goods are presently permitted for transport than ever occurred prior to this change. To which advanced proposal that prince answered by ola of the 4th of this month that, on the one hand, this would principally tend to the disparagement and diminishment of His Highness, since, as has been said, it was a right that His Highness had enjoyed equally with the Honourable Company from of old or for a very long time; with this proviso nevertheless, that he would indeed tolerate those dues being farmed out for one year, Malabar, 23 April 1748 in order to observe what the same might yield, with the pretext that his menons or senais should likewise come to enjoy their customary salary as a matter of custom and usage. To which was further added this appendage: that His Highness would have understood the condescension that the Honourable Company has granted to private traders sailing with the Company's passes and flags to trade with their goods or wares, from which the aforesaid Honourable Company alone was enjoying the tolls, without His Highness drawing anything from those merchants, although previously 1 percent was always credited by Their Honours to the Chiandurs; all of which can be inspected by Your Right Honourables in the ola itself, inserted in the Resolution of the 9th of this month. We therefore leave this matter, introduced as something new, entirely to the approval of Your Right Honourables, whose decision we at all times await, and we shall meanwhile not neglect to bring that prince From Malabar, 23 April 1748 to other thoughts, as well as to abolish his menons entirely in this instance, since in the event of a farming out to be undertaken the same are wholly or entirely unnecessary. Further, the aforementioned prince, through his regidors, has delivered to the undersigned Commander a certain ola written by the rebels of Travancore to a Pattar subject of His Highness, in order to make its contents known, which ola was indeed of much speculation, as can be seen in the resolution of 16 March, where the same stands inserted. And as that prince seemed somewhat embarrassed by its contents, he was nevertheless served in reply that His Highness should not deviate from his good right, and it would be a shame for him to grant the requests of the Travancore ruler, but that he was compelled to reject them in polite terms; which has indeed had a consequence, as the regidors, upon their further arrival at the king's presence, were 23 April 1748 From Malabar ordered to report that their prince was of the sentiment never to submit to, much less meet with, the avaricious prince of Travancore; whereto it was solely written in reply that he, the prince, might well suffer that His Travancorean Highness restore or cede the land to Rajah Singatty. And concerning the place of residence granted to that prince in his realm, that Travancore nor anyone else could prevent this, as it was contained in reason that this unfortunate king must have a place of residence in the world. 1369 From Malabar, 23 April 1748 Postscript that Prince had laid certain seizures upon the gardens of the Company's farmers in the Conquest of Paponetty and the region of Edatoerlij, which is made plainly evident both by the olas of 22 and 29 March written to the Jewish merchant Ezechiel Rabbij, and as inserted in the Resolution of 28 March and 9 of this month, as well as that he is innocent thereof, of which case more will be spoken later under the post of the said Conquest, along with what further information we have received concerning it. The Caimal of Angecaimal, or Cherallij, having paid a visit to both the Commanders on 9 February of the past week, one did not fail to confront the said land regent with his improper conduct regarding an adoption whereof mention was made in our annual report dated 31 January last, as well as the tormenting of the Christians and his unfounded pretension against the King of Cochin regarding the bazaar of Angecaimal; however, as that fox perceived that the Commander was already too well acquainted with that matter, and would never consent thereto any more than the Cochin crown wearer would, he nevertheless wished to make known the true state of this affair From Malabar, 23 April 1748 These princes cannot live peaceably affair, and to say that the Caimaline was from Coenattoenadda, and moreover was devoid of succession, and that the King of Cochin dearly wished that she should choose an heir from the house of Barnattoe Koos, wherewith that Caimaline was not pleased, but, as it appeared to him, would rather see one adopted from the Cherallij lineage; with which statement this matter rested, and one does not see at present that the said Caimal makes any further disturbance thereover, but keeps himself quiet and peaceful; and as for the affair of the Christians, it was granted to that Caimal at his request to have the matter investigated by impartial persons, wherewith they are presently engaged, of which proceedings Your High Excellencies will be informed of the outcome in due course; but as regards the bazaar of Angecaimal, which is pledged by the King, few words were exchanged about it, as is further evidenced from the held conference mentioned hereinbefore. Of the King, or rather the Prince, of Ayroer, since our respectful annual report there is likewise nothing else to say than that he still commits some hostilities in the conquest, as appears from letters written hither by the overseer thereof under date of 20 February, without one having yet been able to discover the distributor of those rash olas whereto reference was made in the letter of 31 January, and the said Prince keeps himself very quiet at present; but if one may believe the rumors, this is because Travancore is said to have sent an ola to that Prince wherein it was conveyed that he, the Prince, must keep quiet, as he was not in a position to offer him assistance for the present; however, regarding the prohibition against exporting any cattle from the country, that Raja praised the Prince for such a matter of great consequence. Now, as concerning the Conquest of Paponetty itself, we had the honor to inform Your High Excellencies by General Letter of 31 January that a large number of Moors and subjects of Ponatoen had arrived in this land, who committed many acts of violence there, From Malabar, 23 April 1748 as well as that the Ayroer Prince broke out into wickedness, and that for the checking thereof we had thought fit, by Resolution of 25 November of the preceding year, to send 24 Lascarins, but it seems that this force was not capable of restoring everything there to a good footing, for the overseer in the said Conquest informs us by letter of 2 March of this year that while he was engaged in the village of Edadoentij in collecting the Company's dues from the farmers, the Cochin Crown Prince had dared to presume to lay seizures upon a certain Melwaram farmed by the farmer Hoeppe in the year 1739 from the Honorable Company for ten years for 1200 Malabar parras of paddy; over all of which matters, and the bold behavior that this prince has again dared to undertake, as is evident in all its details from the Paponetty letters of dates 27, 15, 19, 22, 25, and 27 March written hither by the overseer, one was compelled, after having beforehand notified the Cochin crown wearer hereof by ola of 4 March and having urged him in his duty to oppose this, without the said monarch having given us the least satisfaction in this matter, whereby the evil has even increased, as is clearly evident from the Paponetty letter of 27 March mentioned hereinbefore.

1373. Cell From Malabar, 23 April 1748 It appears that the same arises from a certain entitlement that the Company acquired from a pagoda called Fruellij Cadda, which legally belonged to it according to the report submitted on 6 July 1737 by the former Captain of the Lascarins, Isaak Isaaksz, and the Topass Silvester Mendes. This was of such effect that said officer reported in a letter of 31 March that all the evildoers had retreated the day before his arrival while committing some hostilities and carrying off 50 battijs or Cochin parras of paddy; furthermore, upon his arrival there, he immediately lifted all the seizures and proceeded with the collection without encountering any resistance. Thus returning Malabar, 23 April 1748 and reporting again on the 2nd of this month that the Company had obtained the seal, and that the aforementioned peoples had inflicted some damage upon the native inhabitant. There still remained a regidor and 20 Nayars of the Cochin faction without committing any hostilities, merely awaiting orders from their Prince to depart. Malabar, the 23rd of April 1748 To settle and decide by sending commissioners, it was therefore further resolved at the session of the 2nd of February to send the Captain of the Topasses Silvestre Mendes to Chettua, and in case the settlement of this matter should fail, only then to proceed to the sending of two members from our council. Mendes having then also departed thither, but on the 29th ultimo a further ola was received from that ruler, whereby the investigation was postponed until the last of March, as His Highness claimed at present to find himself heavily hindered by the rebellious Moors in his realm, so we must think that this matter will still remain lingering for some time for the sake of the Moors, whom the said ruler keeps actively at work, and it is very apparent that they will not easily be curbed by their great power. For that reason, the Captain of the Topasses Mendes was recalled from Chettua until further word is heard that that ruler will dispatch his ragidoors to that place. Concerning the Punatoor, we have nothing else to inform Your Right Nobilities for this time other than that he has some dispute with the King of Cochin over an elephant that has fallen down and been captured in a pit in the mountains there in the territory of His Cochin Highness. And whereas the Punatoor is of the opinion that the said beast belonged to a certain pagoda named Addur, the Cochin King, to maintain his authority, had the said animal taken away by 500 armed Nairs without anything further being heard of this matter. Regarding the newly reigning Kolathiri Prince, nothing of note has been heard since our annual dispatches and communications, except only that that prince, by an ola of the 11th of March, requested the Chief Weyerman at Cannanore to assist him with an amount of 40000 Rupees, because the Canarese, in the last war waged against the realm of Kolathiri, had once again ceded the lands then conquered therein, upon the intercession of the ruler Palearesoe and the promise of contribution of a heavy sum of money by the late Prince Regent of Kolathiri. Which, however, not yet being satisfied or paid, the said ruler Palearesoe, who had stood as surety for it with the said Canarese, has now on the 7th sent off the prominent ragidoor with about a thousand men to collect the promised sum from the said Kolathiri, or else to persuade the Prince Regent to cede the aforesaid lands again to the King of Canara, or else to compel him to fairness by force; all described in the Cannanore letter of the 26th of March 1748, of which an extract lies herewith under No. 13. The Chief Weyerman replied thereto by an ola of the 13th of March that His Highness had to address himself to Cochin concerning this, and that he greatly doubted that the government would hand over so large a capital without authorization from Your Right Nobilities; all further to be seen in the copy of the olas to be found under No. 14. And as that prince has not yet consulted us about it up to now, and we would not proceed to give it even if we were provided with funds, the Chief Weyerman was merely informed by letter of the second of this month of our approval, that we approve his conduct in this matter, having heard nothing further of that affair. Ali Raja, of whom mention was made in our frequently named annual dispatches, still seems to continue with his dangerous designs, and we must say on his behalf that the Chief Weyerman, during his presence here, testified that this rogue now begins to turn towards the good, as he only now begins to perceive that placing trade on a good footing in his realm was much better than all his further designs. We wish to hope from the heart that that Moorman will persist therein, so that we may not trouble Your Right Nobilities any more in the course of time with his detrimental designs. And as for the Angrian pirates, we must say that if it is to be believed, they were instructed and departed for their country in the month of February, for the reason that Shivaji Raja with a great force, joined with the pirate Bonsolo, invaded his lands, whereby that pirate now sits in great distress, and Shivaji has already conquered a strong fortress of the Angrians. That the king of Cochin also did not act in good faith in concluding this dispute is evident from the report of the said commissioners under the date of the 11th of this month, annexed to the resolution of the 15th of this month; wherein they report that when the Syrian Christians came to meet His Highness with their new bishop, the 1385 Malabar, the 23rd of April 1748. the same reproached them that they supposedly had not respected His Highness's banner and had removed the respect of the pagoda by beating shields and drums, which would be a matter, according to His Highness's opinion, that could not or should not happen within the limits of the said pagoda when the flag was raised. Our general annual advices have still progressed quite well, since from the said time a quantity of 9329 lb of cloves, 3946 lb of nutmeg, and 907 lb of mace has still been disposed of, to which the arrival of the bombaras, to the number of six vessels, has contributed much; which vessels, after having reported their cargo at Calicut, appeared here to provide themselves with various goods. As to cash in the desired specie, there is not only a great shortage, but we are even poorly supplied with the current coin of the country, fearing whether we shall advance to the northward. And as we took our recourse to Ceylon, Coromandel, and Surat, we nevertheless doubt whether anything of what was requested will be obtained, for the Ceylon ministers informed us by letter of the 24th of February that they were unprovided therewith, and those of Coromandel also appear by letter of the first of March not to be in a position to be able to assist us for the present, just as the ministers in Surat by letter of the 19th of March also say that due to the poor condition of their treasury they are likewise unable to come to our aid; so that we can collect virtually nothing to the northward unless the Jewish merchant Bechiel Rhabbij comes to our aid in many matters. And as it cannot be thought that rupees and pagodas will become so abundant that enough of them will be obtained for the purchase of pepper and other necessary merchandise to the northward, we take the respectful liberty to submit to Your High Excellencies whether one could not conveniently obligate the merchants to pay for the most sought-after trade goods, such as sugar, spices, iron, and copper, likewise in rupees or pagodas instead of Cochin fanams, in order thus once and for all to prevent the Honorable Company from continually being forced to pay them with the currently sought-after specie. Which proposal would already have been put into effect here, had it not been for the fear that the trade goods would often remain lying in the warehouses for a year, whereby we, in the present circumstances of the times, would be placed in great perplexity; wherefore we prefer to await Your High Excellencies' honored orders regarding this. The entire stock of our cash in the middle of this month consists of 50401. 1. 8. guilders, wherefore we still respectfully request that Your High Excellencies may be pleased to take prompt reflection on our demand for cash sent by the general letter. The appointments and dismissals of the junior members at this head office and at the subordinate fortresses and posts Your High Excellencies will find in the resolutions of the 11th of February, 16th, and 28th of March last, the copies whereof go herewith in a separate bundle, and we very humbly request Your High Excellencies to be pleased to grant a favorable approval thereto. Regarding the purchase of pepper, we must report with regret that it is only meager, since after the dispatch of our latest annual advices no more of it has been stored at this place than 255071 lb, besides still upwards of 200000 lb at the residency of Porca; in which latter parcel is included 75000 lb that the merchants have already fulfilled on their contracted agreement of 150000 lb of pepper. But the lack of the desired specie contributes most of all to this meager supply, since the pepper peddlers are currently, due to the scarcity, so enticed by pagodas, rupees, and ducats that one can hardly induce them to make deliveries unless one promises to pay them upon delivery in the aforementioned coin. Wherefore we then, in the session of the 28th of March, in order not to obstruct this so desired trade, after much consideration, resolved, subject to the honored approval of Your High Excellencies, as knowing no other way out, to consent to this, in hope and expectation that we may thereby bring about a gathering to the satisfaction of Your High Excellencies. Concerning the cloth trade, we informed Your High Excellencies in the often-cited annual advices that in the session of the 29th of December of the past year it had been resolved to invite the Travancore merchants of Tengapatnam hither in order thus to discover whether one will be able to bring about the honored aim of Your High Excellencies for concluding a contract regarding the delivery of cloths on which one can agree with them. We must say in this regard that up to now we have not been able to accomplish anything concerning it, because the merchants have not yet arrived here; nevertheless, we expect them any day, and we assure Your High Excellencies that our attentiveness in this point will overlook nothing in order to give Your High Excellencies the required satisfaction. Regarding the Cannanore propatria cardamom, whose collection we promised Your High Excellencies in the general letter of the 31st of January to report on further, we must now say that according to the Cannanore writing of the 22nd of February last, the merchant was not heard to be inclined to have the same sorted and purified; wherefore we have not been able to conclude a contract for this time, much less obtain them at a reasonable price, and we hope that our attentiveness in the future regarding this will extend further so that we may accommodate Your High Excellencies with the products of this country to give satisfaction thereby likewise.

But as regards sandalwood, we must state that whatever efforts have been exerted to obtain early supplies for the trade in China, no further success could be achieved in that regard until a short time ago, when the interpreter at Barcelor, following our exhortations, entered into a provisional contract, subject to approval, with the Canarese merchants for 100 Candies or 50000 lb., to deliver the same at Cochin at the merchants' risk at f 27. — —. per 100 lb., provided that payment shall be made one half in rupees and the other half in trade goods. As no lesser terms were to be negotiated, we promptly accepted the contract and, by letter of the 3rd of this month, quickly instructed the said interpreter to send it hither with the utmost dispatch so that we might be provided with it for China before the arrival of the ship Leijden. But to our regret, we must say that the aforementioned fragrant wood has not yet appeared, and since it is already late in the season, we could not see fit to let the ship Leijden wait for it. We [addressed] the Easterners, in order to place back aboard the ship Goudswaard, in the roads, instead of the soldiers who had come hither, a corporal and 16 privates who had served out their contracted time and had made strong petitions to be relieved from this Coast. And as it was our intention, in accordance with Your High Excellencies' orders, to first ship off the few Easterners who are still to be found here, numbering 18 heads, it was deemed best on that day, upon their own request and the honored approbation of Your High Excellencies last mentioned, to decide for certain reasons to let them continue until a further opportunity. Herewith goes accompanied by an accurate list of the military personnel continuing here on the Coast, for Your High Excellencies' consideration, as well as of those seafarers who are stationed ashore and on the sloop Maria Laurentia, about whom there is nothing to remark. Regarding the fortification works, there is at present nothing else to report than that we enclose herewith a memorandum of the cost of the completed gunpowder magazine at Coilan, amounting to the sum of ƒ 15693:9:8:—, thus exceeding by a sum of ƒ 12219: —:8 the amount for which it was given up in the report of the 17th of January 1743. And as this at first glance gave us much pause, it was nevertheless found upon its resumption that no coolie or labor wages had been entered, which one finds by experience amounts to more than the materials themselves. We could, however, not omit having a proper report drawn up by the trade bookkeeper to demonstrate the surplus and deficit according to the aforesaid statement used thereon, which is also inserted into our resolution of the 15th of this month for Your High Excellencies' elucidation. Concerning the gunpowder stamping mill, they are busily engaged with it, in order to lay its foundations before the bad monsoon, so that after the end thereof they may proceed quickly to see it completed before this year has expired, in order to be able to make use of it, as we have already been provided with a master powdermaker through the goodness of the Right Honorable Governor of Ceylon, van Gollenesse. Of gunpowder, we had in stock here on the Coast by mid-March no more than 148171 lb. And although we had flattered ourselves to obtain something further upon our requisition through the ministers of Ceylon, we must now abandon those thoughts because it is already too late in the season. Regarding the ships and lesser vessels, we have the honor to inform Your High Excellencies that Langewijk, coming from Bengal, dropped its anchor here in the roadstead on the 11th of March. And after its Captain-Lieutenant Fredrik Schouten had appeared on shore, having brought no letters or goods for this Commandery, the same requested nothing other than drinking water, with which this vessel was provided on the same day. After granting him an order out of apprehension of the Angrian pirates to proceed with his voyage with haste through the Maldive Islands, the said vessel set sail again that following night, continuing its voyage to Surat. The ship Leyden, coming to anchor here on the 5th of this month from Surat, had, pursuant to Your High Excellencies' orders, loaded into that vessel for the China trade: 100000 lb of Mangalore areca and 25000 lb of sandalwood, together with another 94 pieces or 840 pieces of cowhides for Ceylon. Wherewith that vessel, after receiving drinking water and boats for the Surat Moors stationed thereon, undertook its voyage on the 15th of this month to Colombo, or else the Galle Bay. And as the Commander of the Indian Fleet, Dirk Wolter van Nimwegen, indicated to the first signatory that, pursuant to Your High Excellencies' concession for the purchase of the goods procured by us for China, he and his supercargo were entitled to half of the five percent recognition fee which Your High Excellencies have favorably deigned to grant to the servants everywhere, and which he had enjoyed in Surat from his cargo for China, but as we are not yet authorized by Your High Excellencies for that disbursement, the Commander politely refused them this, yet upon this request could not omit to give Your High Excellencies proper communication thereof, with the request to be furnished with Your High Excellencies' orders in this regard for the future. For Goudswaard, some rice was provided here, along with male and female donkeys, male and female slaves, besides some ropes, wherewith the same departs via Porca, to take in the pepper lying in stock there, to Tuticorin. But we had hoped that one would have been able to provide the Ceylon government with more rice; but since the remaining quantity of the contracted 200 lasts has not yet appeared at all and the good monsoon is fast running out, one had to decide at the meeting of the 15th of this month to let the said vessel continue its voyage with only 102 29/00 lasts of rice, so as not to expose that vessel to any danger due to the lateness of the season. Malabar, the 23rd of April 1748 The bomb vessel De Vesuvius appeared here in the roads from Ceylon on the 15th of this month, bringing Your Right Honourable's revered letters of 17 September of the past year and 5 January of this year, accompanied by such papers as the index shows, all of which have been duly received by us. We have seen from all these papers that the chosen Second of this Commandment, Gerardus Kerse, was granted transport hither on the ship Oud Boshoven, and that some cash had been dispatched by Your Right Honourable for this Commandment on that vessel, but that misfortune willed that this vessel perished near Anjer in the Sunda Strait. We express beforehand our heartfelt sorrow over such a fatal occurrence, praying to God Almighty that it may please His Divine Majesty to preserve the Company from similar disasters in the future. Furthermore, we thank Your Right Honourable very respectfully for the dispatched relief, although we have been so unfortunate as not to be able to enjoy the fruits thereof for the present, and say further that we shall let serve for our dutiful observance the orders that are applicable to our administration, as well as that one shall take as a guideline the communication from the Right Honourable Governor of Ceylon, Van Gollenesse, by letter of 25 March, accompanied by a copy of the missive addressed to Your Right Honourable by the committee of directors and plenipotentiaries of the Assembly of Seventeen for Secret Affairs, dated 27 April of the past year, from which the distressing state of affairs with regard to the Republic of the Netherlands has fully appeared to us. We shall never fail to take the necessary precautions in every respect regarding this, and to keep our city as well as the subordinate fortresses to the best of our ability in a proper state of defence, and to guard against all hostile attempts, as well as try to repel force with force, having, pursuant to the request of the Ceylon ministers, dispatched the aforementioned bomb vessel thither again on the 25th of this month with these our humble further advices, after it was provided with some small repairs. The sloop Maria Lourentia having returned from Quilon for the second time on the 26th of February with 13 bales of Coast linens and 800 pieces of gold ducats, one was compelled, upon the notification of its master regarding the severe leakage that this small vessel was subjected to during the journey hither, to have it inspected by our master shipwright Warner Clorijn, Master Attendant Pieter Hesseling, and Master Sijbrand Sybrandsz, who then also delivered a report on the 9th of March concerning its condition, from which it appears that most of the leakage was located in the sternpost, which was somewhat decayed through age and had parted somewhat from the keel, and which could not well be remedied in the water or by careening, whereby that small vessel necessarily had to be brought ashore in order to properly discover its further defects. At the session of 16 March it was resolved to grant this request, and upon further inspection on the 2nd of this month in the presence of its master, it being found that quite heavy repairs had to be undertaken on this vessel, and that according to a rough calculation the expenses are estimated to amount to 9,498 guilders, as Your Right Honourable is further requested to consider from the aforementioned papers recorded in the resolution of the 9th of this month. And since this work amounts to quite a high sum, one nevertheless had to decide at the same session, in the hope of Your Right Honourables' approval, to let the same proceed, because time does not permit awaiting Your Right Honourable's authorization regarding this, on the grounds that one has no other vessel at hand to be able to transport our yearly papers and necessities both to Ceylon and other offices. Reformed families formerly enjoyed much benefit from him through his edifying instruction, and furthermore, also because we are presently not actually provided with any Reformed ministers, as Your High Excellencies may please to observe at large in the said resolution. Cornelia van der Linden, widow of the late Lieutenant Gerrit Jan Jallang, having had a request made to us in Council on the 15th of this month to be permitted to dispatch a petition to Your High Excellencies under the Company's papers, by which she demonstrates that eight months and two days of the maintenance of her household in the year 1742 were withheld, since her said husband, upon the capture of the pagger at Ayvoer, was held prisoner by the Travancore until he had to pay for it with death on the last day of December of the said year; we have not been able to refrain from granting that urgent request, her petition addressed to Your High Excellencies being entered in our register as No. 3, along with two more petitions from the head surgeon in the Company's hospital, Louis Quintin Martinsart, and Balinese Lieutenant Aliet, the former imploring an increase in salary and the latter a promotion in rank. Regarding this matter, we must further inform Your High Excellencies that by resolution of the 29th of December of the past year, we have thought fit to let the discharged master of the armory, Pieter Spal, continue a little longer, in consideration that the master journeyman Hans Casper Dielen, sent hither, has humbly requested us to be permitted to view the takeover of the inventory until the month of August, in order to be properly instructed in everything in the meantime, at which point, upon the esteemed approval of Your High Excellencies, we shall first make Master Spal's discharge take effect. Malabar, under date 3 April 1748. and had taken ocular inspection of the situation of the fortress of Coylan; declaring his intention to seek out the king of Signattij, for which purpose he was said to have dispatched 200 Coenje Caetans into that realm as an advance guard, who made many bravados on the bazaar at Calicoilan, with the further notification that he, the resident, had immediately obtained report through two Signattij merchants that the said king was not to arrive at Mablicaire before the 20th of this month; also that the smallpox is raging fiercely around the south of Trevancoor, and that rumors were circulating of some talk of war on the public bazaar between Holland and France, whereby the aforesaid ruler was said to be incited by the French nation to make a diversion against the Honorable Company; but everything being merely current rumors, one must await the outcome of both matters from time, and we respectfully refer to the arrived letters themselves, which stand quoted in the register under numbers 20 and 21. From Malabar, the 15th of March 1748 handed to His Honour by Sybrand Sybrandz, stating among other things that the leak, or most of it, is at the stern, which in our humble judgment is caused because the sternpost below is somewhat decayed through age and has slightly separated from the keel, and since this is far below the water and impossible to remedy in that element, whether by careening or otherwise, it is necessary that this ketch, if it pleases Your Honourable Worships, must be hauled ashore, in order then to be able to inspect satisfactorily and, if possible, repair its already mentioned and further defects and weaknesses, to which that vessel is generally subject forward and at the bow; and regarding the voyage to Ceylon, we feel burdened, because of the weakness of that vessel, to state positively that it would be able to undertake the voyage; for which reason His Honour inquired what ought to be done From Malabar, under date 15 March 1748 in order to inspect that vessel properly, and it was approved to have it first hauled up on the beach at the ship carpenters' yard to inspect it further, as well as to have an estimate submitted of what the costs for the necessary repairs will amount to, in order to take a further decision thereupon, although we consequently need a vessel here for the conveyance of our dispatches, both for the fatherland and for the Indian headquarters, for further addressing to the government of Ceylon. The Noble High Government at Batavia having ordered us, by their much esteemed letter of 26 September last year, to sell the monastery in the Company's timber yard, the Lord Commander declared, in order not to proceed rashly in this matter, that he had first caused the same to be appraised, of which a report or notice has come in, containing: To the Right Honourable Lord Corijn Stevens, Commander and From Malabar, under date 1 April 1748. and supreme ruler of the Coast of Malabar, Canara, and Vingurla.
