From Persia, the 25th of March 1748. and presented a demand for some sought-after merchandise to be expanded upon as well, that also the detained 1,000 pieces of shallots have been of no service, highly venerated orders by missive dated the 23rd of October 1743. Also, to our utmost regret, one must once again inform Your Right Noblenesses that trade here is still very poor, since, due to the political revolution, the roads everywhere are still unsafe, and this is the reason that no merchants come down from the upper country. Nevertheless, one takes the liberty in all submissiveness to present to Your Right Noblenesses herewith a demand for the most necessary spices and merchandise that are best sold here, as one lives in the hope that trade will revive to some extent, and that through the turnover of those goods one will be able to make good the daily expenses, of which we recently have had a shortage, since the cash box has become entirely bare, and, despite whatever effort one made to dispose of them, one could not part with the detained 15,000 pieces of shallots without great loss to the Honourable Company, nor advance them to the servants, whereby we were compelled nolens volens to the 213 From Persia, the 25th of March 1748 and why one was forced to borrow from the Junior Merchant Jacob Carelsz: 2,500 rixdollars at 2 ½ percent per month for which the General Office here has been credited by Your Right Noblenesses to be paid there in return making of the daily expenditures for the account of the Honourable Company, to borrow from the Junior Merchant Jacob Carelsz: a sum of two thousand five hundred rixdollars at ½ percent interest per month, so that, with Your Right Noblenesses' pleasure, the same may be paid to the Merchant Ian Willem Hazebroek and Junior Merchant Ian Jacob Corp residing there, as appears from our adopted resolution and the bill of exchange granted thereupon dated the 3rd of February last. Furthermore, upon the request made by the bookkeeper and dispenser Andries van Nes, as former vendue master of this office, one resolved and decreed in our last held session to receive from him into the Company's cash box a small sum of 4,925 mahmudis or 477 florins 10 stuivers, being the net proceeds, according to the statement of account and further enclosures exhibited thereof, from the estate of the burgher skipper of the small vessel De Franturier, by name Ian Zion of Dort, who sailed out as a sailor in the year 1731 with the ship De Windhond for Zeeland, in order that these moneys, after deduction of 4 percent for the Honourable Company, may be remitted to the Lords Orphan Masters at Batavia, so that they may subsequently be addressed to his lawful heirs, for which amount the General Office From Persia, the 25th of March 1748. shipment of the accompanying Coromandel goods to 33,962 florins 1 stuiver 12 pennings has already been credited in our books, and regarding which one implores Your Right Noblenesses' favorable approval in all deference. Regarding the aforementioned 15,000 pieces of shallots, we have the honour to communicate to Your Right Noblenesses herewith that by resolution of the 21st of this month, for the reasons cited above, we decided to send the 1,000 pieces of Coromandel shallots by the bearer of this to the Coromandel ministers, since one hopes they can be employed there with profit. The Basra and Bushire trade sheets having been brought on the [illegible] of this month by the bearer of this, the same were audited by the First Bookkeeper, whereby such errors were found in the first-mentioned as a memorandum drawn up thereof and sent over alongside the said books indicates, to which we defer in all deference; and since the said ministers again insisted on our approval regarding their transactions, one thought fit to persist in our adopted resolution dated the 25th of November of the said past year, and to refer the same once more to Your Right Noblenesses. Persia, 25 March 1748. On cargo sent again; many errors were found in the same, and they are therefore still retained. With Your Right Excellencies' kind approval, the 6 horses have been dispensed with for this time, for the reason that this ship must call at the Coast of Coromandel and Bengal, where those pack beasts are to be obtained; but on the other hand, for the relief of the heavy burdens, according to the resolution taken on 21 November, though curtailed from the previous year, 3 stallions have been transported to the first-mentioned place. Concerning the servants at this office, we cannot inform Your Right Excellencies otherwise for this time than that, since the departure of the often-mentioned ship Nieuwalcheren, there has passed away the assistant Sirach Agges, who was relieved to depart toward Your Right Excellencies, together with the bookbinder and second ordinary commissioner in the trade warehouse Daniel van Uijlenbroek, in whose place, at the last meeting of the 21st current, the young assistant Barend Karsseboom was appointed as warehouse assistant; and having served his ample time, the bookkeeper and trade transferrer Jacobus Weber was relieved from here to Batavia. Therefore, passing on to the pay books for the year 1746/7, regarding which it must be noted that upon their examination many errors were discovered in them, and in some respects they did not square with the trade books; for which reasons, by the aforementioned resolution, they have been retained here for correction until the departure of the yacht De Leijdzaamheijd, while for this time we request permission to refer to the annexes not specially touched upon here but made known on the register, as well as trade and pay papers. These last consist of a copy roll of the qualified personnel, item a short strength roll both of this shore and of the ship and sloop, as well as a short nominal roll of the passing passengers. All Present The Honorable Commander having reminded the Members how one was necessitated, and on the 4th of the past month of January upon inquiry found it good, to purchase for the account of the Honorable Company two heavy ropes from the Fatherland of 11 to 12 inches thick, being 1 new and 1 somewhat used, for 4000 mamudis or 1200 guilders, on account of the high necessity thereof for the service of the chaloup De Valk, because its own aforesaid are totally and entirely deteriorated, and were also reported as unusable by its officers in their note of 13 October of the past year, as the following declaration further indicates. From Persia the 25th of March 1748. the officers having been asked whether they had received everything well and properly, they declared that they had. From Persia under date 25 March 1748: to pay no further regard to his writings, as he has already long since been finally dismissed from the service and protection of the Company; — the Company's treasury being entirely destitute of cash for the daily necessary expenses such as subsistence money, and whatever else cannot suffer any delay, having already caused all estate monies to be accounted for and advanced by the Curator ad lites, the Lord Commander therefore brought into question whether one, alongside His Honour, could not resolve, instead of using the withheld Basra money which currency in these present times cannot be disbursed without considerable loss to the Company and would be hard for us to justify, to accept as a loan some money at half a rijksdaalder interest per month payable at Batavia on account of the Company from the Junior Merchant Jacob Carelsz, concerning which he has already spoken preliminarily beforehand, whereby we might then at least for as long as it shall last somewhat get out of our distress and embarrassment, as well as give the common people no cause for murmuring or discontent, wherewith each of the members was fully satisfied, and therefore decided with unanimous votes to receive for the present a sum of two thousand five hundred rijksdaalders at 48 heavy stivers each at the said interest per month, upon all of which we most humbly request, as having occurred out of urgent necessity, to obtain in due time the most favourable approval of Their High Excellencies. From Persia, the 15th of January 1748. Concerning the ordinary expenses incurred this year of ƒ1431:—:— 6 xka. ƒ1491:—:— Or together with an ardent petition that it may please Your High Excellencies to approve this expenditure as well as our further proceedings. On the 17th of November passed occurred the unexpected demise of the young assistant Gijsbert van Schoonderwoert, in whose place in the pen-service we have enlisted the sailor Jan Duyts of Leeuwarden, to which we were forced to proceed on account of being overwhelmed with the clerical work due to continuous sickness, and therefore we come to recommend this young man, being of good conduct, into Your High Excellencies' most powerful favor, who likewise on his part promises to make himself worthy of this fortune by an assiduous vigilance. The deceased's effects have been transmitted under proper inventory to Gamron, to the end of acting therewith as the orders there prescribe. And furthermore, as we have run short of proper storage by the abundant arrival of merchandise, considering the Company's present dwelling here could not suffice in fathom or foot and the warehouses were too small, we have been obliged to resolve upon renting a second house situated next to that of the Company for a sum of 65 rixdollars or ƒ156:— per month, whereon we likewise shall continue to await Your High Excellencies' favorable approval with longing. Further, at the request of Captain Lieutenant Govert van Welle, because of the heavy sickness and mortality on his vessel, 17 native sailors have been taken into service, of whom four at ƒ21:12:— for the voyage, but the remainder at ƒ7:10:— per month. While we, following the declarations of the said Captain Lieutenant, must to our regret take the liberty to inform Your High Excellencies that on his voyage hither Jacob Tierse of Vermeur, boy, went missing, and inside the ship died the second mate Cornelis Meroede of Sevenbergen, the cooper Jan Jurgen Rink of Leerdam, and cook's mate Jan Ursene of Schooneveld. Item in the Euphrates from this latest sickness a further 10 sailors have laid down their mortality; besides that, like rogues, the boatswain Barend Bergstroom of Stockholm and sailor Jan Christiaansz of Norden have abandoned Christianity and embraced the Mohammedan religion, which then, High Noble, Severe, and Mighty Lords, has compelled us to proceed to the last-mentioned measure. And while we, owing to the sad event concerning the burning of the small vessel De Wilhelmina that arrived here on the 23rd of July, equipped by the Director and Council in Bengal and serving for provisions, have granted transport to Bengal to the mates Lodewijk Dieffhoud and Abraham Schrader, yet its supercargo Monsieur Pierre Perdigeur, not being inclined thereto, is to commence his voyage one of these days on the Portuguese small vessel De Catharina. Concerning Bandar Bushehr, which it has pleased Your High Excellencies to place directly under this factory, we have likewise, for the reasons mentioned in the beginning of this regarding Basra, thought best to let the commissioners close their trade books according to custom, the more so because upon receipt of Your High Excellencies' highly esteemed order they had already fled due to the extortions upon obtaining license from the Council of Gamron, and had arrived in loco, and thus could far better account for their actions to that ministry than to us, as they also have not failed to effect on the first occasion. On the last of August anno 1747, the Chief, having convened his present companions who had some administration of the Company in their hands, presented to them collectively, and to each in particular, that whereas upon the submitted consideration of His High Nobility in the Council of India on 17 August 1745, an oath of purgation for Company servants has been devised by their High Nobilities, of which the form is present here, as to whether each one rests assured that the Company has not been disadvantaged by them directly or indirectly in sale or purchase or in any other matter; at the same time declaring first that he was ready on his part to effect this, provided that this is not considered any further back than from 15 January, when his administration commenced and the order was received here. Whereupon they replied that this clause seemed fair to them, and therefore fully agreed with this; whereupon the form was immediately read aloud, and the Chief took the oath from the Second and the Cashier solemnly took the oath before the Chief.
