Otherwise the expenses of 1747/8 amount according to the books to ƒ49426: 15: 8 minus the credit of the account of compensation - - ƒ335: 18: - thus they amount only to ƒ49090: 17: 8. and the profits - ƒ28098: 15: - wherefore the expenses exceed the profits by ƒ20992: 2: 8. From Persia under date 10 November 1748 to the increase whereof and the curtailment of the expenses everything will be put into operation that shall be in any way possible. Accordingly then, also in conformity with the highly respected order and yearly custom pursuant to the formula existing for that purpose, by each and everyone at this table the oath of purification was solemnly taken, and it was further promised to work in the future as honor-loving servants for the interest of the lords and masters, in order thereby to pursue the kind pleasure of our noble supreme rulers in the Fatherland and of their High Excellencies at Batavia. The mercantile affairs having been concluded thus far, one proceeded to the discussion of the fatal case that befell the private vessel De Karseboom on 30 August last upon arrival here in the roads from the English Company ship Beaufort, and how that small craft by the captain of that bottom, unexpectedly in the afternoon with an armed boat From Persia under date 10 October 1748 boat without a blow being struck was boarded, and which one deemed of the uttermost necessity to make known here, this case having occurred in the following manner. On the aforementioned date the aforesaid British ship Beaufort arrived here in the roads, commanded by Captain Jodrell; who, however, no sooner had appeared here, immediately setting aside all reasonable considerations saw fit to send a boat well armed with men and muskets aboard the cited Karseboom, and under pretext of this being a French ship, to board the same, cause its flag to be struck, and subsequently commit more other improper acts, without paying any regard to the Persian admiral ship lying here in the roads, except only that upon dispatching his boat to the Kerseboom he had also sent his chief mate and chief surgeon to the sea warden, Molla Ali Shah, to inquire as well what kind of ship De Karseboom was, but notwithstanding that he, Molla Ali Shah, told them it was a Dutch ship, nevertheless gave no credit thereto, and went off board again very displeased; but through which actions Molla Ali Shah then seeing that hostility resided there, and having also at once seen the dispatch of their boat with crew to the Karseboom, and that as said the flag was struck, sent both for the maintenance of his authority here in the roads and to render assistance to the Karseboom to offer them resistance then. Having thus learned of these various actions, the Heer Commander, not failing in the maintenance of the Company flag, immediately sent the interpreter to the English lodge, in order earnestly and exactly to ask the chief of that nation, Mr. Henry Savage, in the name and by order of His Honour, the reasons and motives of these absurdities committed by Captain Philip Jodrell as aforementioned; as this was then done, he, Savage, had answered thereto: Captain Jodrell had an order of the King to visit all ships, 415. From Persia under date 10 October 1748 ships, principally when he suspected they were French ships, and that such had been the reasons regarding the sending of their boat and the striking of the flag, also at the same time to see her pass; and because the captain of the vessel De Karseboom, Jan Witte Le Blanc, was not on board, he, Savage, requested of the Heer Commander that His Honour would be pleased to have the kindness to send him, Le Blanc, with his papers back to their lodge.
