The yacht De Leijdsaemheijt, of whose departure your High Nobilities were already informed by letter of the 25th of March, according to the writing of the Bushire commissary dated the 5th of May, having arrived there on the 11th of April, completely discharged its cargo at that time and incurred no expenses, but returned again from Bushire to Gamron on the 17th. That some Linens were also disposed of at under 30 per cent pure profit, I now take the uncommon liberty also partly to attribute to the expensive purchase, and on the other hand that the private traders who sell these goods, if it cannot be otherwise, content themselves with 14: 15: to 20 per cent, in order to be able to spend their funds again with the Surat monsoon, so that the supercargos, principally those of the English (: who frequently have sworn [illegible] thereafter to make their voyage as it pleases them privately :/ proceed to this in order to be ready quickly to take in freight goods, with which they make the most profit, excluding that those gentlemen are skilled in this matter, and mostly advance their cash to the passengers whom they convey on their vessels on bottomry, especially when they cannot invest the same in any copper at 62: 63: 64 to 65 mamudis, so that the merchants, being able to settle in such a manner, have little appetite to pay us what we are obligated to demand for the Honorable Company. The Cinnamon, which nobody wishes to look at and is also essentially devoid of smell and taste, has been sold in small parcels for a few pounds; likewise the Ceylon Coffee Beans for ƒ 5:7 the man of 25 lb or at 4 1/10 per cent loss, which were totally spoiled and useless for consumption, other than by deceit in an unjust manner to mix among the Mocha Coffee; yet this latter with the greatest difficulty, as the buyer was very inclined, with some loss, to let us retain the same. Regarding the old copperware, there is nothing to be profited in loco, as we have seen by a Surat petition one cannot purchase the 100 lb higher than ƒ 58 to 68, whereas the same is collected here at will for ƒ 68:-40: up to 76; so that in Bushire the man of 6 ¾ lb, according to the writing of the Commissioner by letter of the last of March, is also purchased at ƒ 4: 4 to ƒ 4:7, which also comes to stand the 100 lb at ƒ 64:9 to ƒ 64:6, so that we then by missive of the 15th of August ordered to halt the purchase; yet as we, by letter of the 16th of the said month, which came into our hands on the 14th of September thereafter, were informed by the Commissioner that the collection of 50000 lb of the said pieces had already taken place, we not only on the 15th thereafter or rather the following day most strictly ordered the shipment thereof, but also, because of the bad notes the Bushire Commissioner began to crack at that time, expressly recommended to sell the goods for Ready Money, because we judged that in case of need these would least hinder flight and can be best secured, which handling we trust Your High Nobilities will be pleased to approve as well as assent to our request to be allowed to know at what price one might assess those pieces for the Honorable Company, notwithstanding all difficulties of large volume in unexpected occurrences etc., in order also to participate in a trade with which everyone here is laboring, which rarely stands still. From Bassoura, 30 June 1749: Trading here is such that everyone is compelled to transact by count for shallots, or piastres, and not according to the desire of the Surat ministers by weight, showing us that on the 29000 ps piastres sent from here in the year 1747, according to the tola weight, there was found a shortage of 7 3/84 pCto or 4701½ tolas, with the remark that almost all were with holes, whereon we then answered by our letter of 6 March to Gamron and wrote of the impossibility thereof, because all other merchants receive the shallots or piastres by count, exchange them to their advantage, and transport them to Coromandel. Although the amount of this questionable underweight has been secured with us, wherefore we then implore Your Right Noblenesses From Bassoura, 30 June 1749 implore you not to burden our necks with this either, but favourably to validate it. For Your Right Noblenesses' gracious remembrance in granting the stipulation of 5 pCto on the sold goods in general from the merchant, we find ourselves most highly obliged, but have not been able to profit from this with the spices, since it was impossible to sell them dearer than to date, partly because the cloves have now been increased in price within a short time according to the order, the nutmegs strongly begin to be worm-eaten, and the cinnamon, being scentless and tasteless, is not sought after except in case of a great shortage of Malabar ditto, just as for the aforementioned reasons we also in the past book year From Bassoura, 30 June 1749: — 35 did not dare to take for ourselves ½ pCto for the cash, and besides have not yet had the right understanding of this, but in this present ditto one will bring both into effect upon approval of Your Right Noblenesses. Under these circumstances we would not have failed to send the provisional Resident Frans Canter under Arrest 90 From Bassoura the 30th of March in the year 1750: Arrest on board and make ourselves Master of his Effects for the Account of the Honourable Company, in case such had been feasible by Ruse or force, but having taken counsel on this matter with the secunde Du Mee and the English resident, who had suffered many affronts and ill treatment from the mentioned Frans Canter, the same have unanimously assured us that however Fain they would like to see this Resolution of ours Effected, which was in Accordance with their feelings against him, they were Nevertheless compelled to advise us against it. Firstly, because the Captain Pasha, to whom he, Canter, had on the Company's behalf lent very considerable sums in his own name, had declared himself for him in the rebellion against the deputy governor of Soliman Pasha, and had even placed some of his Men in the Company's Lodge to shoot from the flat or Roof at the Government building, so that the same would consequently not allow us to use the least violence against the mentioned Canter; and secondly, that it was very likely that all the undertakings we should employ to secure his Person by Ruse would be in vain, considering the Location of the place and the Fear that he, Canter, would certainly have through the conviction of his Conscience of falling into the hands of his Lords and Masters

From Bassoura the 30th of March Anno 1750: to fall into; That they could advise us nothing better for the Honourable Company's interests than to see to rescue, with good words as much as possible, the Honourable Company's cash out of his hands, without attempting anything against his person. Shortly thereafter we were welcomed in the name of the Captain Pacha, and told expressly that he had given his protection to the aforementioned Canter, but that the same would render a correct account to us. We on our part making a virtue of necessity, dealt with him in a friendly manner, urged him as much as was possible to effect his conveyance in due form, but received little sensible reasoning from him in reply, being able to assure Your Right Noblenesses with truth that early or late we have met him in no other state than drunk and intoxicated. Meanwhile, with good words, we have gained so much that, on several occasions, both in cash and through taking over good debts which he had outstanding, as well as by buying his furniture, garden, horses etc. for the Honourable Company, we have collected a sum of ƒ135490: 6: 8: but with the end of the month of January the Arabs in the river having risen against the Captain Pacha and declared themselves for Soliman Pacha, and shortly thereafter a governor or Mouselim on his behalf having arrived here, the Captain Pacha was forced to leave the city and to retreat to Minauwe, which is the station of the galleys, in which flight Canter, who had nothing good to expect from the government of Soliman Pacha, accompanied him, and having sheltered there for some days under the protection of the Captain Pacha, the same deserted in a roguish manner by night on the 16th of March with a vessel toward Green, an Arab place situated in the gulf at the mouth of the river, taking along with him the Assistant Jan Duyts, and a young sailor who had come ashore as officer on the unloading vessels, without delivering up to us his latest books and remaining indebted to the Honourable Company, according to what appears to us from the books closed as of the ultimo of August 1749, the sum of ƒ35602: 17: 12: besides the charges which Your Right Noblenesses have imposed on him regarding the Ispahan commission and his administration here. The rumour goes here that the aforesaid Frans Canter intends to go from Green to Bander Ricq and from there overland to Ispahan, on which account the Secunde Du Mee has offered to go and pursue him to Bander Ricq at his own expense (where it is certain that one would easily gain hold of his person) and to bring him from there under arrest to Gamron, which we wish may have a good effect, and regarding which we have also written to the Resident Bijleveldt at Bendher Abbouscher, as being not far from Bander Ricq, to attend to his duty in this matter with the required attentiveness and vigilance. To give Your Right Noblenesses, in a word, a true idea of the person of the frequently mentioned Frans Canter and his conduct here, Your Noblenesses may be pleased to know that from the time of his arrival, he was daily intoxicated, lent the Honourable Company's monies without hesitation in his private name to the government in order thereby to gain esteem among the Turks and obtain precedence over the English, for which reason he also on all occasions gave large presents, done to bring the English into contempt. We would trouble Your Right Noblenesses and waste time unnecessarily to expand further upon this, but we must justly wonder that such a senseless conduct, and one so disadvantageous to the interests of the Honourable Company, did not come to Your Right Noblenesses' attention sooner. All these aforementioned difficulties have not prevented us from working with zeal on the unloading of the ship Westhooven in accordance with Your Right Noblenesses' honoured order, in order to give satisfaction to Your Right Noblenesses through a speedy dispatch of the same. For the future, we dare undertake to be able to discharge and dispatch such a ship in the space of two months. We await Your High Excellencies' favorable orders concerning this, without which we have not dared to undertake to employ the ship Westhooven for this purpose, although the merchants who have pearls in readiness have earnestly requested us to do so. Concerning the trade of this place, we can assure Your High Excellencies that the same is currently flourishing to the highest degree, and had the roads from here to Bagdat not been closed by the rebellion of the Captain Pasha, possibly our entire cargo would have been sold. Some vessels from the said place have already arrived here, and many more are to be expected within 4 to 6 weeks.
