From Mocha, 15 November, Year 1751. Veldhuijsen from Nagapatnam. From Mocha, 15 November, Year 1751. Together with The Right Honorable Councilors of the Dutch Indies. Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed, Lord and Right Honorable Lords. Since it has favorably pleased Your Right Excellencies to dispatch the undersigned to conduct the Company's valuable trade and further interests at the cities of Mocha and Judda, their endeavors have also always been aimed at satisfying, through true loyalty and zeal in the service of the Honorable Company, as much as possible the intention and expectations of Your Right Excellencies, notwithstanding that in this trade many unexpected obstacles are encountered which, in such circumstances, cause one great anxiety and embarrassment to make everything turn out well. In such a situation, the first undersigned has frequently found himself at the city of Judda, continually proceeding according to his best knowledge, sometimes choosing from two evils the one which he deemed would be most profitable for the Honorable Company and most agreeable to Your Right Excellencies, of which we have the honor to speak more broadly in the continuation of this, and first make a beginning with how, since 23 October of the past year, with the sloop Veldhuijsen together with the brought-back 61 packs of Guinea dark blue for the trade of Mocha, we had departed the Nagapatnam roads, took to Punto Gale, in order to await the ship Rotterdam, turning our prow towards Punto Gale, which bay we reached after 29 days of sailing, Arrival there. where the aforementioned vessel on 27 December thereafter arrived from Bengal, Arrival of the ship Rotterdam, and at the last-mentioned place received for the Judda trade 134 packs of diverse linens, together with 134 packs of linens, and at the same time reloaded there for the trade of Mocha the aforementioned 61 packs of Guinea dark blue and 900 lb of Ceylon cardamom, further being also provided with 400 lb of weights, their scales, beam, and gallows, together with the set of marked weights and further necessities, as we have had the honor by missive of 14 January of this year, which at Punto Gale was delivered to the Right Honorable Highly Esteemed Lord Gerrard Joan Vreeland, addressed to Your Right Excellencies, to which we respectfully refer ourselves to avoid a lengthy repetition, since nothing further befell us on the voyage. Thus one shall first make a beginning with Mocha, where we arrived safely at the roads on 14 February 1751. But because the wind blew very strongly from the south, we could use no boat, so the Governor sent a native vessel the next day with which we sailed to the shore, and presented ourselves to the Governor Amir Soliman. Having made our arrival known and delivered the customary greetings in the name of the General Company, several points concerning principally the commerce and settlement of the Royal Chamber and other old debts were presented to him through interpretation, consisting of the following: First, how we were sent again to this place by Their Right Excellencies, the Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Lords of the High Indies Government at Batavia, with a considerable cargo of merchandise, in order to subsequently continue the voyage further to Judda, requesting his aid in the course of the trade to be conducted. Secondly, how the Honorable Company for so many years past had been kept at bay with all kinds of frivolous excuses regarding the settlement of the Royal Chamber debt, wherefore we requested that he, the Governor, would fully settle the debt of the Bet-el-Fakih this year, to demonstrate thereby to the Honorable Company, according to his promises of the previous year, his good intentions, or at least allow the entire toll to be withheld in reduction. Thirdly, requested his assistance regarding the remaining debtors, Cassem Turbetti and Hassem Tassoes, to compel them to payment in case of unwillingness. Lastly, that he, the Governor, should not delay the departure of the Honorable Company's vessel from here to Judda for a single day, but as soon as it was provided with water, it must depart. To which the Governor replied, not to say that regarding the settlement of the Royal Chamber debt he could give any assurance, but that according to his old custom, in proportion as ships arrived, he would seek to reduce the debt.

From Mocha the 15th of November Anno 1751: From Mocha the 15th of 9ber Anno 1751: dwelling absented himself. therefore requested that in the course of time the original bond might be shown to him. But concerning the debt of Hasfem Passoes and the heirs of Cassem Turbetti, the first-mentioned was currently not here in person but at Betelfacque, yet held to his previous words, saying that the debt was solely contrived by the Cargas, and that he was also poor and unable to pay; likewise regarding the heirs of Cassem Turbetti, who are destitute and unable to settle anything. Subsequently, the First Carga asked how much would have to be paid during our stay here for the Honourable Company's old dwelling, and requested to deduct that amount also in reduction of the Betelmaal; however, he replied that Anno passato 450 Spanish Reals had been paid by us for it and that it had to be paid in cash. After exerting some further urging to help advance the Company's interest and to lend his good assistance thereto, the aforementioned dwelling was rented for 450 Spanish reals, and we took our leave. The merchants did indeed come several times to the Honourable Company's old lodge, and all the samples were shown to them, but because no broker appeared, nothing could be accomplished. Finally learning from several Arab as well as Banyan merchants that the Honourable Company's broker Beridas Ridas owed much money to diverse merchants and had no credit left with anyone, which was the reason that he did not appear. However, since Your Noble Highnesses, in your highly respected instructions, were pleased to prescribe to us that if the aforementioned Beridas Ridas could not be trusted, to appoint another broker in his place, but regarding that, not to pay anyone, whether Banyan or Arab, provided he assumes the debt of the previous broker. All this, and also because the time for the departure to Iudda began to draw very near, has finally compelled us not to delay the Honourable Company's trade any longer, but rather to conform to Your Noble Highnesses' ever-respected orders, and accordingly caused us to resolve on the 21st of February last to appoint as the Company's brokers the Arab merchants, the Honourable Company's shroff Mamhet Moehat and Sait Salij, both being well-to-do and known here for good name and reputation, who interposed themselves and likewise accepted the debt of their predecessor as a debt incurred by themselves, namely, that upon the arrival of ships, something from their earned brokerages would always be deducted until the aforementioned debt with the Honourable Company shall be settled, of which both passed a written bond. After their appointment, the collective merchants appeared in the afternoon in the Honourable Company's old dwelling, and after many debates back and forth, we finally proceeded to the complete sale of all the goods brought by the Honourable Company for trade to Mocha, namely the whole quantities of ordinary white Benzoin, black Benzoin of the variety Peeuw, Ceylon Cardamom, Wild Cinnamon, Cloves, Nutmegs, Mace, Sandalwood, Tin, Pepper, rock candy, Powdered Sugar, flat iron, Sappanwood, Borax, Indigo, and brown-blue Guinees; and subsequently on the 4th, 6th, and 21st of July, upon the return of the ship from Iudda, also sold the whole quantity of long flat iron, Mochadoetjes, and 2 corgis of Soesjes de Raddanegger, so that of all the goods brought by the Company for trade to the Red Sea, nothing else remained except 11 packs of Soesjes de Raddanegger, 11 packs of Mallemollen de Sawaspoer, and 6 packs of Soadohatie, 2 soekels of mace, and 1 pig of lead, the latter having fallen under the ballast but was found afterwards, which we hope will be approved by Your Noble Highnesses. The cargo having consisted mostly of pound goods, we betook ourselves the following day to the customs house or King's Alphandigo in order to check the Honourable Company's weight against the same, and found the frazula to hold fully 28 5/8 pounds; thus, subject to Your Noble Highnesses' favourable approval, the frazula has been calculated at 28 3/8 lb in the trade books. 19 From Mocha, the 15th of November, Anno 1751: and poor sales inland. Timorese sandalwood is in no esteem at Mocha, but we had to dispose of it with great difficulty among other popular goods. Ordinary white benzoin has been reasonably well in demand this year because the supply of it has not been large. Black benzoin of the Peeuw sort also went off well, so that every 2 years about 15 to 16,000 lb of it could be disposed of at a reasonable profit. Ceylon cardamom seems to have been in better demand this year, so that every 2 years about 2000 lb of it could be disposed of. Wild cinnamon is well in demand in Mocha, and 10 to 12,000 lb of it could be sold, provided it were packed somewhat better. The tin moved very slowly again this year, and we sold it with great difficulty, it being also not at all in demand here. The pepper also moved very slowly this year due to poor sales inland. For candy sugar, there was little demand, although we disposed of it during the sale of the powdered sugar. Powdered sugar has been reasonably well in demand this year, so that every 2 years about 1000 canassers of that sweetness could be sold with a reasonable profit. Iron is well in demand in Mocha, and a supply of 150,000 lb can certainly be sold there. Bima sappanwood is virtually of no account here, and we could not have disposed of it for any price worth mentioning had we not sold it together with the iron. Indian borax is brought here in small quantities, but it could be sold if it were somewhat more stony and not so like fine sand. Brown-blue Guinea cloth is brought here in abundance by the French from Pondicherry. This surprises us all the more because a large parcel of the very same goods was bought from us by Persian merchants and dispatched to Persien via Boucheer. The said Resident Beijlevelt attributes all these setbacks to the regent of Boucheer, whom he portrays very poorly. The testimony of a French and English captains, who sold a parcel of goods there themselves upon calling at Boucheer, refutes these reports. The expenses of the past fiscal year, both at this office and at Bushehr, amount to a sum of f14951:17:-, which in comparison to the fiscal year 1748/9, in which the same amounted to f16062:18:8, constitutes a decrease of f1111:1:8. The account of gifts and presents, which in the said fiscal year came to only a sum of f3009:9:-, amounted in the year 1748/9 to f6631:3:-, consequently f3631:14:- less was given away in the past year. The expenses for ships and yachts amount to f1554:6:-; against which those in Anno 1748/9 amounted to only f219:12:-; but in this regard Your Right Noblenesses will please remark that in such year no Company ships or yachts arrived here. The annual overheads amount to f9919:18:-, which in the year 1748/9 amounted to f9212:3:8, consequently in the past year to the bad by f707:14:8, arising on the one hand from the provisions supplied at Batavia to the signatories hereof on their voyage hither, on the other hand from the expensive purchase of rice and wine, which previously was brought by the Honorable Company's ships as provisions. The paid monthly wages to the bookkeepers Galenus van Oort and Pieter Kuijper are f468:-:-; against which nothing was paid in the past year 1748/9. The charges on merchandise, which in the past year amount to a sum of f8191:3:8, we cannot compare against the year 1748/9 for the reason that no goods were brought here. Thus we shall briefly have the honor to present to Your Right Noblenesses that the yielded general profit in the past year amounted to a sum of f144962:9:8, the general expenses f14951:17:-, consequently this office advanced a sum of f130010:12:8.
