Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed, Sovereign Lords, and Honorable Lords, The vessel named in the margin having delivered here a net quantity of 345521 lb of rice, we take the liberty, after having offered our obligatory gratitude to Your Excellencies for this shipment, to let that keel depart again toward Batavia under accompaniment of this letter, and therewith, pursuant to Your Excellencies' highly esteemed order dated the 6th of this month, the Chinese Que Nako has been placed under arrest, who, having been addressed by our oversight upon the receipt of Your Excellencies' aforementioned letter on the 8th of this month, and having resorted to all kinds of evasions, was treated in such a manner as Your Excellencies' aforementioned order dictates, there being found here in his dwelling such furniture and goods as we have the honor to point out to Your Excellencies with the attached copy of the inventory, and which goods we have properly sealed and ordered to be preserved and guarded until Your Excellencies' further order, which we implore from Your Excellencies in all submission as soon as possible. From Bantam, 12 May 1752 Furthermore, with Your Excellencies' favorable approval, we accompany this with a specification not only of what the requested money received with the Tulpenburg was employed for, but also of the entire petty or daily cash, according to which the same is currently in arrears for a sum of 3838 florins, 27 stivers, 8 penningen, the pepper cash not counted, in which there currently still remains a sum of 12371 reals. From Bantam, 12 May 1752 From Bantam, 12 May 1752 the aforementioned bastion was indeed brought to completion in the roughest manner by the Lieutenant Engineer Berg, but both through his sudden departure and the bad monsoon much was still lacking, namely the stone floor both on the cavalier and on the point, all the plasterwork, a barrack or lodging for the guard troops, two small apartments both for the lodging of the artillerymen and the storage of artillery supplies, a galley for cooking for the militia, the locks on the five doors of the casemates, and various other minor details; however, we have also progressed so far at present that the guardhouse, an artillerymen's house, and the galley have been brought to complete readiness, and a beginning has already been made with plastering, hoping with the now approaching favorable weather not only to proceed therewith, but also to bring the same to a speedy conclusion; and since the moats around the three sides of Speelwijk, namely the North, East, and South, have dried up to such an extent, both due to the new works and otherwise, that in some places one can walk through them, we also respectfully implore Your Noble Honors' esteemed authorization to have the same properly deepened. Furthermore, there are attached hereto four expense accounts concerning the supplies provided to the ships Nieuw Nieuwerkerk, Hercules, De Jager, and the bearer of this letter; item, one concerning the reward for the capture of a runaway slave, together with his reviewed confession, amounting together to a small sum of ƒ 666:2, while we, under secure arrest, are sending over the aforementioned serf together with a slave who was with the named Chinese Que Nako, to await the esteemed disposition of Your Noble Honors. This having been prepared thus far, we further received Your Noble Honors' honored letter of the 10th of this month, for whose respectful reply it serves to state that, the barrels with gift goods having been duly brought here, upon opening them nothing was noticed to have been diminished, since all the pieces turned out properly, although the velvet was not measured; however, we maintain, subject to correction, that it is hardly possible that anything was delivered short either to the King or to the Crown Prince, not only because all the goods were brought thither under a detachment, but also because the same were delivered piece by piece according to custom, exactly as specified in the King's letter; and having received everything, both he and the Crown Prince stated that all was well, as the Lord Brigadier here testifies, and the gentlemen Van Sugtelen and Barnewal, item the Junior Merchants De Pril and De Wilde over there, could also testify, since the gift goods were delivered to the court by these commissioners without anyone from the Political Council being present. Finally, we still have the honor to present to Your Noble Honors such copy of the resolution as was adopted in our meeting on the 4th of this month regarding the installation into the Political Council of Captain Sleysheld, as well as the levying of the liberal gift in such manner as can best take place according to the constitution of this place, in our opinion, to which we refer ourselves most respectfully to avoid prolixity. After having communicated to Your Noble Honors, in accordance with our bounden duty, that the stock of pepper at present consists of 230 bahars, we take the liberty with all high esteem and respect to call ourselves, Highly Noble, Greatly Esteemed, Widely Ruling Lords and Right Honorable Lords, Your Noble Honors' humble and obedient servants. We have inspected the small effects left behind by him, but found nothing worthy of mention other than a female slave, whom we have put in the Company's irons until Your Noble Honors' esteemed order. Furthermore, attached hereto is a petition from the junior merchant and fiscal Benjamin Sitser, aiming to be permitted to travel up to Batavia for a few days to settle private affairs, upon which we humbly request that Your High Excellencies deign to reflect favorably. We also have the honor to inform Your High Excellencies that the bark De Poejer has arrived at this roadstead this afternoon from the Bangka Strait without having discovered anything of the wrecked bark Marquesane, having deployed on the 21st instant a small vessel with a quartermaster and four men, who, having been unable to return on board due to the strong current, are still missing. After having respectfully communicated to Your High Excellencies that the supply of pepper as of today consists of approximately 460 bhars, we have the honor to call ourselves, with all respect and high esteem, what we truly are; namely, underneath stood, High Noble, Grandly Esteemed, Widely Ruling Lords and Right Honorable Lords, lower, Your High Excellencies' humble and obedient servants, was signed, J. v. 87 From Bantam the 25th of May 1752 From Bantam the 25th of May 1752 Arrived at the Cape on the 24th of January 1752 where we found the following ships, namely the Bevalligheijt, Captain Keijser, for Delft the Liefde, Captain Ontjes, for Amsterdam Voorlant, Captain Soet, for Amsterdam the Waeksaemheijt, Skipper Alwel, for Enkhuijsen Nieuw Nieuwerkerk, Skipper Meeuse, for Zeelant the Jager, Skipper Leertouwer, for Hoorn as well as three ships, namely Tolsduijn, 't Casteel van Tilburg, and Breedenhoff; having departed from there again on the 24th of February with these three aforementioned ships, and by God's great mercy arrived without any disasters at anchor in the Sunda Strait on the 14th of this month, hoping that God may further please to bless us with wind and weather to complete our voyage as swiftly as possible. The first mentioned ship has 7 dead and the second 8, and the ship Vosmaer also seven. Nothing else worthy of Your Right Honourable's attention having occurred, I take the liberty to recommend ourselves to Your Right Honourable's favour, praying the Almighty to preserve Your Right Honourable and your illustrious family for a series of years, freed from all disasters and adversities; may He shower the same with the most precious of His blessings for soul and body, while we further shall hope with all our physical strength to remain with the highest esteem and greatest veneration.
