From Bantam the 2 November 1757. Jan Bantam the 2 November 1751. going from there, we returned to our ship on the launch with our business unaccomplished. The 28th ditto sent a letter to the pangerang wieratama asking what the reasons were that no pepper came from his land, and also that he should make the enemy depart from his land, since he wished to be a friend of the Honourable Company and that he should send a reply back. The 29th ditto the pangerang singeraija came on board and said that the enemy was already close by, and that they saw no other outcome than to flee from there with wife and children, whereon I gave him the answer not to flee before I had an answer to the letter, sent the launch and boat to shore to give them courage, the 2 September the pangerang singerija came on board with 2 of his proas, manned with people and armed, and requested if I would not send the launch to capture the enemy and take away the proas; whereupon it was resolved to send the launch along with 13 armed men, but arriving at the beach all of them stood there with the pangerang wierotama, and asked what we came to do there, whereupon we said to fetch the proas of the enemy, or to set them on fire, whereupon he gave us for an answer there they stand, do as you please, and if one wished to use some consideration one would rather leave them standing, and whenever I demanded them he would send them with people and everything, for he ruled there as pangerang, and did not wish to be commanded by the pangerang singerija to do so, and that he also had letters from the Company and the King, which taught him that he should keep himself quiet and without war, which he would also do; however he left it to us whether one wished to take the proas along or set them on fire, that one could do, whereupon we left the proas standing so as not to cause the pangerang any commotion in his land, and parted as a friend. The 3rd ditto received a letter from the said pangerang and understood from it that the enemy had been with him, and asked for help, and said that he saw an opportunity to take away the ship Adriana, and to destroy the village of the pangerang singerija and set it on fire, to which the pangerang wierotama gave him the answer that he had no need of rebels, and stood under the Company and the crown of Bantam, and ordered the enemy to clear out of the land immediately, whereupon the enemy fled, but where to is unknown, the 28 September the pangerang singerija came on board with two Bantammers whom they had seized on putie, and being interrogated, they answered that the Crown Prince of Bantam had sent them with a proa to the Bay of Anjer to fetch some timber, and they having arrived in the bay, three Europeans met them with guns and weapons, and had fired upon them and forced them to bring the three Europeans with their proa to silleba, as they were English, and having arrived at putie sent the boys ashore to fetch some drinking water, and they thereupon left with the proa, but where to is unknown. From Bantam the 16th of December Anno 1751. From Bantam The 16th of December 1751. I have the honour humbly to inform Your High Noblenesses of my safe arrival, along with the other garrison troops, at Lampong Toelang Bauwang. To recount the particulars thereof, first, my arrival with a portion of the same before the aforementioned river on the 2nd of October by the bark De Meermin, after having departed on the 26th of September prior from the vessel Lis, whose skipper had kept approximately four miles too far to the north due to a miscalculation, which can easily happen because of the difficulty in discerning the low-lying land and the large bank lying before the river, which requires taking such a long detour. Furthermore, finding the emissaries of the Prince Regent at Bantam, Radeen Tjacra Nagara and Ingabeij Salamarta, at the mouth of the river with their vessels, and having sailed inland in their company for about seven miles, I perceived a prahu ahead that seemed to be sailing and taking flight upriver. Whereupon the Bantam emissary sent out to overtake it, which brought it back after a short time, wherein were found the delegates from the collective lower lands, who were waiting, as they said, for the return of the Company's servants and to inquire into their intentions, whether it was to avenge the grievance of their previously undertaken rebellion, in which case they wished to take flight in time. Whereupon I assured them of the good intentions, and that the order of Your High Noblenesses brought a general peace, provided that they behaved well henceforth, that they could rely upon it, and deliver the same message to their principals, to whom they were returning; whereupon they departed. Yet notwithstanding this, I nevertheless found the first village, Goenong Iappa, abandoned by the people. But sailing higher up, matters were better, and where the post is, almost all of them gathered around the same, and some came on board, expressing their regret and appreciation for the aforementioned benevolence. Further, having stepped ashore and marched into the post with beating drums, I saw that it was not damaged anywhere, without a single tile missing from the roof or palisade from the row, except for the locks on the doors which had been broken, just as they had seized the goods together with the Bantam rebels. And we found nothing else of note except the fourth piece of iron cannon, firing three pounds, on its gun carriage, brought there a few days previously, and furthermore two unfit horses, and the old blacksmith's bellows, which was still in fairly good condition, which is surprising, though this comes from the fact that by order of the vagabonds themselves no damage was to be done to it, with the intention of occupying it after capturing the ports at Bantam and after the destruction of the presumed realm of Margasanna. Thus, their followers brought no damage to it, and so by two special coincidences it was preserved. Over this, I outwardly demonstrated my satisfaction to the multitude, among whom many from the upriver villages had since appeared, gradually putting aside their fear, along with a serious recommendation not to attempt their reckless transgression again, as it would otherwise go badly for them and not as mercifully as at present, with a renewed declaration that the previous occurrences were entirely forgotten. Whereupon they unanimously requested forgiveness and submitted under the promise of lasting obedience henceforth. Regarding the delivery of pepper, I also exhorted them at that time, to which they likewise promised their diligence in compliance. To test the aforementioned, I was able to persuade some of them to go to Bantam to demonstrate their duty and pledge of subordination to the present Prince Regent there, so that three vessels departed in my company. Meanwhile, I now deem it time to go survey the Lampongs situated to the south, up to Secampong, pursuant to Your High Noblenesses' esteemed order, and I currently find myself before Lampong Poeti, of which experience I intend to report upon my return via the bark De Vrientschap, which small vessel I have left lying before the post as a precaution during my absence, in order to maintain respect there.

Whereupon I, commander, and mate Iacob breem, together with the junior merchant wittens, assistant surgeon, a sailor, rowed or set off for land. In the evening we arrived under the shore, but could not land because of the swamp. We struggled along that shore until the 12th ditto, but could find no solid land nor provisions except some periwinkles and leaves of wild cabbage trees. Today we also found a raft with the boatswain, four sailors, and 5 Moors, but they did not wish to stay with us, and shaped their course along the shore around the Point. On the 13th the boatswain and Moors and a sailor came back with a native vessel to fetch us. They reported that the other crew members had entered a creek with the raft, but having waited long for them, they had not returned. We went together into the said vessel and rowed further along the shore around the point, but saw none of the crew members who had gone ahead. On the 20th we came before a creek and rowed into it. We found a native vessel which gave us a little rice for refreshment, and we learned that the country's name was Lampong Trigo. The chief of the vessel, whom we had requested to bring us to batavia, could not do so without the prior knowledge of the chief of that village. In the evening, he came down with many armed men. We requested provisions; he answered that he had nothing here, but we had to go upriver, to which hunger compelled us. Arriving there, we were received very poorly, were locked in a hut, and guarded by a strong watch. After 2 days, the skipper or chief of the vessel was called, with whom we agreed to go to bantam. In the evening we were brought down again by many armed men. On the 25th we got ready to set sail, but had much trouble with the Moors, who wanted to remain there. From Bantam the 29 Jan: 1752 Lampoeng Poetih whose river at five miles distance is by the abovementioned though by far not extending as large and deep as this one of which the lowermost settlements are called Soerabaija being about one day's sailing up and Boedjoet a good half day higher where the staple of pepper from the uplands is brought down from Panibahan and Poengeboean the latter flowing into the right side and the former being very populous which delivers much pepper while below the first mentioned settlement another large branch called Pagabondan flows far inland mostly extending up to the land of Secampong where also much pepper is harvested together being able to make about six hundred Bharen though that is thus less by fully two hundred Bharen than some years ago because of the unrest between the Pabeanders and Abongers the latter inhabiting the uplands on the left side of Toelang Bauwang which entails the neglect of the fields. There is for the rest a good collection of pepper lying both at Boedjoet and in the aforementioned uplands even still from last year's crop partly traded by the Bantam merchants of whom some according to the account of the regents of the aforementioned settlements who were on board with me were in Bantam to fetch prahus in order to transport it away in them partly still unsold as also that in two years not a single Spanish real had been imported for payment which was made in linen charged according to the whim of the traders so that the countryman had to accept it in that manner, which also caused sloth in the planting for which bad management the blame was placed on Queen Sariff since deceased in the presence of servants of the Prince Regent of Bantam Radeen Tjacra Nagara who said he would write to his master about this for redress just as I also promised the aforementioned chiefs to bring about good in this matter. From Bantam the 29 Jan: 1752 Meanwhile I recommended them to show the required duty of loyalty and obedience to the present Prince Regent of Bantam and to promote the deliveries of pepper which they promised to fulfill whereupon having departed well contented continuing the journey further from there I thus passed Pennet whose river is not large but still delivers a reasonable quantity of pepper up to two hundred Bharen of which the fields are in bloom where a collection of one hundred and fifty Bharen lies to fetch which the traders from Bantam were present there. Bordering on it is Maringai being mountainous land located not far from the sea having only a small river where not much pepper grows. Further lies Nibong which gives almost as much pepper as Pennette and also has no much larger river. Sailing up I found the river virtually closed on account of the trees felled on both sides having fallen into it and only a small passage for the dugout prahu to get through as well as the first settlement called Assahan enclosed with a palisade though opened in some places in my opinion the remnant of the rebellion of Bantam afterward but there were no traders there so that that crop still lay stored up. Coming further before the river of Secampong being still smaller than Poetih of which the course consists only of a reach with infinite bends mostly North-West descending from the land that lies on Poetih as previously thought except that on the right side six miles upwards a tributary flows in called Itam extending southwest up to the land Corwan and further called Patoeanda both so rich in pepper that this alone delivers more than all the others already mentioned together the payment for purchases among themselves even being done with it just as with cash. From Bantam the 29 Jan: 1752 located miles from the mouth and there four Bantam pepper traders with their vessels besides five more of the same which lay at Poetat for the cargo a half day's sailing higher up to whom my arrival was so much the more agreeable as it seemed to me as well as to the collective Lampongers whom I had informed beforehand on account of the disputes that had arisen among them over the delivery of pepper that being to be understood on the one side beforehand concerning the demand for the payment of the outstanding monies of the crown by the former; against which the latter argued that the debt was due to the King at Amboina and on that account were fearful of further demands from time to time and on the other side on account of the uncommon demand for usury over the elapsed time against which the latter protested having called them together over this I made known the reason for my arrival beyond that it served for the country's best, and to remove the quarrel among them that concerning the outstanding monies the same belonged directly to the crown and that debt absolutely had to be satisfied without anyone needing to think much less fear that once paid a further demand would follow upon it but together they directly had to keep to the orders of the present Prince Regent of the Realm of Bantam and they could justify themselves with this statement of mine as being neutral which reassured them to that extent and concerning the desire for the exorbitant interest I replied regarding this that such was unheard of and extortionate and they traders had to moderate themselves in this as in no way agreeing with the prince's will which it was up to them to follow and with their own opinion that both sides were pleased to accept.

From Bantam, 29 Jan: 1752 From Bantam, 29 Jan: 1752. satisfaction, furthermore charging them to make this pronouncement known high up into the country, which they promised to fulfill, after which I departed downstream, from there turning the prow to below the North Island, from where two miles further one encounters Rogok, whose Regent, named Tommegon Poerbaija, came on board alongside the Bantenese Jurragan Branna. This country is also mountainous and borders directly behind the aforementioned Batoeanda and is also fairly rich in pepper, which from there, because of the shallowness of the river as well as a part of Coripan, is carried by buffaloes to the beach and thus loaded at the place named Sram, situated between the North Island and the islands the Three Sisters. Just as from there, further around the south, the shipping of pepper takes place at the beach for the aforementioned reason throughout the entire Lampong region. Next follows the Keysers Bay, in which Samanka is counted as the most convenient, where it has been better with the pepper crop than it is at present, though still almost able to come close to that of Poeti, the cause of which is likewise the disputes that are going on, with parties cutting off each other's pepper vines to avenge themselves. For the last, I have neglected to mention that the island of Bessi is opulent in pepper, being able to yield nearly as much as Secampong, where only one Bantenese has the collection by giving credit to the planters beforehand on the crop, which they have long been obliged to deliver. This conduct of the Jurragans must be brought up in further detail, who borrow money from the Court at certain sums. From Bantam, 29 Jan: 1752. some up to six Spanish reals, others more, in order to deliver the bahar of pepper, for which they were buying trade goods, saying they had to derive their livelihood and profit therefrom, with which they are found throughout all the Lampongs, except at Toelang Bauwang, vending the same after having first set the market price, or else giving it on credit as best they can, mostly waiting for payment in pepper after the harvest, demanding that, and in case of non-payment by the planter, whether by misfortune or through unwillingness, charging half a principal higher for the coming year. That this is not all, moreover they entangle themselves in factional disputes if they have not first fostered them themselves, whether directly or through the second hand, and thereafter sit as judge and give one-sided rulings, even unto condemnation in fines which they cause to be paid to them, it also happening that when complaints fall upon too harsh dealings, he, the Judge, must return it again, such a one being glad even then if he gets it back, even if it is only by half, and he may remain free from prosecution. In this manner knowing how to keep the native under coercion, just as the closing of the river of Secanpang past and the fencing off of the village Assahan comes from nowhere else than from this, and the endless disputes for the lower part likewise have no other origin. For which reason it were to be wished that such usurpation be checked and they, the Regents themselves, decide the disagreements among them, unless through the stubbornness of one of the parties, as indeed happens, they, the Jurragans, must lend a hand to it, or else in matters which they deem better, they go to fetch rulings at Bantam. That these same are also bound to pay for the pepper in cash, so that upon the delivery of goods everyone can buy his choice according to his own judgment, which will encourage many. According to the highly honored order, I have not failed, being at Secampong, to look out there for a suitable place for the erection of a post, but I have not been able to find one, besides the little water in the mouth of the river, where it is scarcely possible for a loaded small pantchialling at high tide to cross over. The only place that could satisfy the intention is Sram aforementioned, because of the good anchorage, but there is no village from which one could obtain any help, whether for maintenance or for whatever might be required or otherwise, except half a day's journey inland and thus far distant. And whether the delivery of pepper there will then indeed continue and not very likely be shifted or taken elsewhere, thereof I dare not assure Your High Honors either, whereon Your High Honors are asked to send their highly honored disposition regarding the permanent location of the post, whether it shall be shifted thither or must remain where it presently is. I also send herewith under arrest the corporal Jan Julius Scholtz van Kneesbeek of the company of Captain Fleijschhelt, who did not shrink three days ago from letting himself down at night with a rope from the rampart into the women's lodgings of the Dalam, which caused a great uproar among the sentries, because of which he was arrested in the morning; but I have deemed it more suitable to send him to Your Right Honourables in Batavia in order to be punished there, the more so because the aforementioned captain testifies that he is a very insolent fellow and he might otherwise sometimes be secretly done away with by the Javanese. From Bantam, the 18 April 1752 From Bantam, the 28 April 1752 All of which brother the Paduka Seri Sultan and son Pangeran Ratu have received with very great pleasure, for which we praise the all-sufficient God, and remain manifoldly grateful to Your Right Noblenesses, and shall never forget the benefactions of the Lord Governor-General and the Council of India, as our hearts have been refreshed by the received words contained in Your Right Noblenesses' missive, namely that the intentions of the High Indian Government were fully made known by Commissioner Looten, whereby our hearts were moved with inexpressible joy, though not without trepidation, as we are ignorant and very humble, to be able firmly to govern the realm of Bantam unless we are assisted with Your Right Noblenesses' virtuous lessons and praiseworthy admonitions, being also entirely unable to render ourselves worthy of Your favorable assistance. Therefore, we hope that the Almighty may please to reward this, since Your Right Noblenesses have again taken up a dead body that was cast away and raised it to King over the realm of Bantam, and have at the same time taken into consideration the person of Pangeran Ratu, over which the Paduka Seri Sultan's heart has been refreshed, because we once again meet a youth for whom there is great affection, who had already almost passed into eternity, yet most unexpectedly, through the help and providence of the Creator of the universe, has been restored to life. Furthermore, we make known to the Lord Governor-General and the Council of India that by Commissioner Looten, on Monday the 2nd day of the month Jumada al-Akhir, brother the Paduka Seri Sultan was elevated to King upon the throne and the governance of the realm of Bantam was conferred upon him, whereupon Pangeran Ratu was also assigned his seat as crown prince of that realm, for all of which, with inexpressible joy and the utmost submission, we remain ever grateful and obliged, praying that Jehovah may please to bless Your Right Noblenesses for this, so that Your Highnesses and Magnificences may increase more and more and may ever continuously abide as the Sovereigns of the Kingdom of Jacatra. We further declare that I am well content with all that has been maintained on behalf of Commissioner Looten alongside the contents of the contracts, and we shall accept and attend to the same to the utmost of my ability, as I do not deny the good lessons and admonitions that are made known in Your Right Noblenesses' letter, as well as what was reported by Commissioner Looten. However, if it is possible, and if it accords with Your Right Noblenesses' wise policy and is agreeable, brother Paduka Seri Sultan prays that he may be relieved of the government, since by reason of advanced age and bodily weakness I am completely unable to govern the realm of Bantam, and if Your Right Noblenesses would allow son Pangeran Ratu to occupy my place, such would be heartily agreeable to me. For that reason, I also hope and trust, both day and night, that Your Right Noblenesses will please to consent to the same. The Paduka Seri Sultan has duly transferred to him the ornaments which belong to Your Right Noblenesses' son the Crown Prince, according to ancient custom. Next, we inform Your Right Noblenesses that during Commissioner Looten's presence at Bantam, great pleasure and contentment were brought to the Paduka Seri Sultan, indeed such that even all the subjects, from the greatest to the least, were very glad and delighted thereby. Finally, we also inform that Commissioner Looten is fully aware of the Sultan's intention, since brother the Paduka Seri Sultan and son Pangeran Ratu, as a token of sincere affection and true friendship, come herewith to offer 150 bahars of black pepper as a present. Whereupon as soon as possible the mentioned vessel was sent to the north in order to try to discover the wrecked bark Marga- sana, together with an able native vessel of the crown prince regent of Bantam, in case they might find anything of it, although I fear it turned out somewhat late with the time, caused by the tempestuous weather and contrary winds on the return voyage, of which I had practically nothing else, but of which I nevertheless hope for the best. I would gladly have sent the bark De Vrindschap along for the aforementioned purpose, but I refrained from doing so, partly on account of the assistance of the native vessel, and principally because of the extraordinary strength of the river's down-current at this time, and for fear of the heavy tree branches hanging far over, against which it might run into trouble somewhere while drifting down due to the pull, owing to the lack of the boat to tow it, the same having been lent to the sloop De Meermin, and thus run the risk of sustaining damage if not encountering a greater disaster; which is why I am holding it back until the falling water, thinking toward the end of next month to take it along to the Lampong bays and Samanca, when it is first to be dispatched on the return voyage to Your Right Honourables. In vain have I deliberated to make this journey, however desirable, at once upon my aforementioned return, for which I received the order on the 25th of February by esteemed letter of the 7th prior, thus two days before crossing over from the highlands of Bantam, in which was mentioned my long absence beyond the time of the post having already passed and consequently the lack of provisions; but the principal obstacle was the rebellious actions of Kyahi Tappa and his followers, as they were beginning anew at Pontang and Tanara, of which the fire could be seen on the 22nd and 23rd of the same month, and this alone was reason enough to take the road to here, as one's presence at such a time was certainly required. Although I have not yet discovered that the same commotion is gaining any ground in the minds of the people, of which I nevertheless might or ought to have some report regarding the outcome before my departure, for which purpose an emissary is at the mouth of the river to be able to obtain it sooner; hereto is also attached a copy of the memorandum that has served for the exercising of the command journey for 69 From Bantam, the 20th of April 1752 From Bantam, the 20th of April 1752 for as long as I shall be able to serve the same again; with the exception of some small changes to be made by appendix due to the passing away of the Ensign Mouier. Further, to communicate that the small pantjallang is by necessity being detained by his servants, and that I have sent the gonting, commanded by the Ingebey Dalem Teyer, to the north in company with the sloop De Meermin to cruise toward Katawe and, at the same time, further in order to discover the wrecked bark De Marquesane. This was somewhat discussed with His Highness, who was pleased to consent to it; upon its return, the said vessel shall continue on its way toward Bantam. Also, that His Highness please cause inquiries to be made after certain five Lampongers named Gadja Hoelong, Pangerang Gedang, Maestingi, and two others staying at Pontang, who departed from here in my absence clandestinely by vessel toward that destination; and, if encountered, to correct them for this misconduct of theirs, which is entirely illicit, as they themselves well know, wherefore some evil design must surely be hidden behind it, the outcome of which must be dangerous and ruinous. And should it happen to cause disturbances at this time of unrest, and they be encountered right at that place, on account of which an emissary is also stationed at the mouth of the river in case they should land earlier, in order to apprehend them for this reason; serving principally to prevent the spreading of false rumors, the usual breeding-ground of folly, yea madness. This roving back and forth of some Lampongers secretly by vessels, and most difficult to detect, aboard those of fishermen and attap-leaf cutters from Bantam, Pontang, and Tanara, sailing along as passengers for a fare, having come into use for some time already, has constantly aimed at something grave and has also brought disaster in its wake.
