From Gamron, on the 20th of September, Anno 1752: From Gamron, on the 20th of September, Anno 1752: being unable to obtain the quantity, assortment, and quality of goods, yet in order not to be overtaken by the heat, they made their purchases from whatever was to be had and departed immediately; however, we think that now again, as the heat is coming to an end, the merchants will come down here and the traffic of trade will increase considerably, which we wish from the bottom of our hearts; notwithstanding that we currently have nothing more here with which we could accommodate them to the profit of the Honorable Company, yet remaining hopeful that as this continues, the country will thereby also achieve a good rise, and that the Honorable Company then, if it pleases Your Right Honorables, might carry on its trade somewhat more quietly. Total of the [illegible] ƒ 909: [illegible] ƒ 6:1: [illegible] As the books of the past financial year of Anno 1751/1752 sent herewith, with your kind permission, will be able to show Your Right Honorables in further detail, we also implore Your Right Honorables' favorable approval regarding all that was performed therein, as well as on account of the repairs carried out and being highly necessary on this lodge, amounting according to the accompanying account to ƒ 755:13:—, annexed herewith under No. 5 with the declaration concerning the same. While writing this, there appeared here in this roadstead on the 17th of this month the ship named 'T Fortuijn, which, on account of defects sustained to its rudder, was unable to continue its voyage to Bassoura; and for which reason the valiant Captain Lieutenant Andreas Zinck sailing thereon requested us to have it repaired here, since on board it could not be done by his accompanying blacksmith, who was sickly; just as we then also requested from the English second, or currently, due to the demise of their agent here Mr. Danvers Graves, the acting agent Mr. Wood, for their blacksmith, and also obtained him immediately, whom we then also placed at the service of the said Captain Lieutenant, as we have learned for certain from the said Captain Lieutenant that the said vessel had indeed been destined for Bassoura by Your Right Honorable, Gallant, and Greatly Respected Worships. Finally, having nothing more to report at present, with the kind permission of Your Right Honorable, Gallant, and Greatly Respected Worships be it said, the first signatory of this comes in all submissiveness to beseech Your Right Honorables to request, as his bound term of Bookkeeper here has expired for over 15 months, his relief from this all-consuming region, as he, petitioner, during his stay here of more than 14 years, has been plagued by fevers and other local ailments, and most particularly of late, both in the past winter and the summer season, with oppressions on the chest, so that he, petitioner, has now become completely weakened thereby; wherefore he continues to hope that Your Right Honorables will graciously be pleased, for the last-mentioned reasons, to grant him, petitioner, permission to depart from here with the ship or ships arriving here. No. 13: Extract of the Resolution taken on the 11th of this current month of April, showing that there was a shortage in the cargo brought here by the ship Breedenhoff, as well as how this occurred and was written off in the trade books of this Government. 14: Authentic copy of the judicial minutes dated the 13th of this month, which confirm that the skipper Simon Rood and his chief mate Michiel Uyttermarkt affirmed under solemn oath that the ten leagers found empty of arrack were indeed those of the Honorable Company, with four sworn statements also attached to the aforesaid minutes regarding the spoiled rice and missing planks. 15: Response to the requisition of necessities for Batavia made from this place and brought here by the ships Breedenhoff and 't Huys te Manpadt. By our humble letters of the 25th, 26th, and 29th of March past, as well as the first of this current month of April, which departed from here with the ship Nieuw Vijvervreugd that sailed from this place on the 3rd of the last-mentioned month, Your Right Honorable High Respected Lordships having been duly notified of the arrival in this roadstead of the return ships Bloemendaal, De Voorsigtigheijd, Amstelveen, Haarlem, Rotterdam, and Zaamslag, as well as the bearer of this letter, the ship Akerendam, and the ship D' Immagonda bound for Bengal, we shall have the honor to add that the two first-mentioned return ships continued their voyage from here to the Netherlands on the 4th of this aforesaid month of April, and the four others, namely Haarlem, Amstelveen, Rotterdam, and Zaamslag, having received their dispatches on the 11th of this month—without, however, being able to leave this roadstead as yet due to the prevailing northwest winds—on this date, both for Batavia and for the fatherland, the bearer of this letter, the ship Akerendam, is dismissed from here, as well as the ship Breedenhoff, which was designated to bring over the return cargo from Tolsduyn; which are to be followed shortly by the abovementioned ship D' Immagonda. Meanwhile, the Councilor of Justice, Mr. Leonard D' Hertogh, who remained here due to indisposition from the ship De Spaarsaamheijt, now continues his voyage from this place to Batavia aboard this ship Akerendam. As all this will further appear from the enclosed bill of lading and invoice drawn up for this purpose, alongside which are transmitted in copy the commissions of the persons who are aboard this vessel lying ready to sail, for the further approval of Your Right Honorable High Respected Lordships. Goods which, for lack of space, had to remain here; which letters and papers, Honorable Sirs, had to be amended here; a packet of papers addressed to the same, which was recently brought hither from Ceylon by the ship Saamslag; further, the copies of the letters and documents belonging thereto, which were dispatched from here to the fatherland on the 1st and 11th of this month of April with the previously cited return ships; likewise, another copy of a letter dated the 9th of December last, written to us by the Gentlemen Directors of the Amsterdam Chamber via the Immigonda, concerning the assuming and wearing of mourning for his late Serene Highness Willem Carel Hendrik Friso, of highest laudable memory, Prince of Orange and Nassau, Hereditary Stadtholder, Captain and Admiral General of the United Provinces, as well as Supreme Director and Governor General of the Dutch Chartered East India Company; to which letter is also attached in copy the regulation received therewith concerning the wearing of mourning for the said his Serene Highness. Out of the transshipped cargo of the return ship Polschuijn into the previously cited ship Bredenhoff, which was laid on as a return ship here, 444 chests of tea have had to remain at this place due to lack of space, whereof 246 pieces are branded and marked Lit. tt and the remaining 198 pieces Lit. Q; and furthermore, 16,102 lb of coffee beans are still detained, which, having been wet and tainted, were found not worthy of shipment. We shall not fail to dispatch the aforesaid chests of tea to the fatherland at the earliest opportunity with the subsequent return ships, if only room for them can be found in the same, as well as further to have the said coffee beans sold here locally for whatever price they may fetch. Meanwhile, by the first presenting shipping opportunity, the statement issued by the commissioners who were present at the unlading and transshipping of the aforementioned cargo shall be sent over, which presently could not well be done due to the shortness of time. 60 From the Cape of Good Hope, the 15th of April, 1752: From the Cape of Good Hope, the 15th of April, Anno 1752. As regards the goods and provisions which were brought hither by the goodness of Your Right Honorable Worships with the aforesaid ship Breedenhoff, such resolution has been taken by us, subject to their favorable interpretation, concerning the booking and the writing off in the trade books of this Government of the deficits found on those goods, on the 14th of this current month of April, as we have the honor to transmit herewith in copy alongside the sworn depositions pertaining thereto. Referring ourselves thereto in all respect to avoid prolixity, we shall further note here that, at the earliest opportunity, competent sea and ship carpenters shall further investigate how matters stand with the return ship Tolsduijn, cited hereinbefore, and whether the same can be repaired and put in a state to put to sea again, or not; being that, in the event of the former, in order to bring that vessel back from here to Batavia, there were left aboard her with his mates the skipper Jacobus van Willer who arrived here with the same; wherefore on the aforementioned ship Breedenhoff, in order to convey the same to the fatherland, there were also left the mates stationed on that keel at the aforesaid Indian capital, together with and alongside the skipper Sijmon de Boodt; while the other officers and crew of Tolsduijn have been transferred to Breedenhoff, and those of this latter to the other. Besides the ship Brouwer mentioned in previous letters, which arrived on the 12th of this month of April with 5 dead and 7 sick, the following ships of foreign nations have also steered for this roadstead on the dates cited beside: April 3: Den Koning van Deenemarcken, a Danish ship, commanded by Captain Jacob Bekman, which set sail from Bergen in Norway on the 22nd of November of the past year with 174 heads. 6011

21 From Cape of Good Hope the 29th March Anno 1752: From Cape of Good Hope the 29th March Anno 1752: Per the ship Nieuwvijvervreugd While the bearer of this is still detained in these roads due to contrary winds, we can, in accordance with our duty, inform Your Right Honorable Worships that on the dates listed below, the following ships belonging to the Honorable Company and foreign nations have arrived here, namely: On the 27th March, Rotterdam with 5 dead and 12 sick On the 28th ditto, Zaamslag with 1 dead and 9 sick, which departed from Punto Gale together with Bloemendaal. Ditto, Akerendam with 11 dead and 9 sick, having put to sea alone from Texel on the 7th November last. Le Philibert, a French ship which, under the command of Captain Mamuneau Bruvet, with an armament of 20 pieces of cannon and 180 heads, set sail from Bourbon towards here on the 12th of this month of March, with the intention of continuing from here to Europe. Their Right Honorable Worships, the Gentlemen Directors at the Amsterdam Chamber, having been pleased to inform us via the aforementioned ship Akerendam, in their esteemed letter of the 4th November of the past year, a copy of which is enclosed herewith, that it has pleased Almighty God to translate from time into eternity His Serene Highness the Lord Willem Carel Hendrik Friso, Prince of Orange and Nassau, Stadtholder, Admiral and Captain-General of the Union, as well as Supreme Director and Governor-General of the Entire East India Company, on Friday the 22nd October of the past year, between 2 and 3 o'clock in the morning. On the 29th March, Tribon, English ship, Captain Gilbert Slater, which, being mounted with 20 pieces of artillery and 100 men, departed from China on the 13th December last Old Style and is bound for London. From Cape of Good Hope, 25 March Anno 1752. Reasons why the bearer of this could not depart from here before this date, having been in this vessel. Which four entries therefore, as has been said, approximately make up the higher amount of the expenses. However, if one considers that the amount of the garrison's uniforming to the sum of ƒ 14202:18: in fact and by the nature of the matter cannot be regarded as an expense item, then another ƒ 13996:13:8 on the expense items of the special administration of this Government would have been profited; whereas on the other hand the increase of the profits arises from the advance on the newly struck sea-guldens and the higher recognition money paid for the cattle farms granted on loan. Everything possible will dutifully be done by us so that the expenses may decrease and the profits on the contrary increase more and more. However, since the writing of our humble letter of 22 February of last year, none of these inhabitants have come to request to hold cattle farms in ownership. Meanwhile, this dispatch which we now send will also serve as an escort for the bearer of this, the ship Nieuwvijvervreugd, which vessel, because of the continual hindrances in discharging its goods intended for this Government, and especially regarding the reloading of others from the products of this country, caused by the vehement South-East winds that have occurred here for several weeks in succession almost without any intermission, could by no possibility be dispatched before this date. The aforementioned goods shipped aboard this vessel consisting of the following, namely: 234 1/37 lasts of wheat 47 7/8 lb of fine garden seeds 16 3/4 lb of coarse seeds 54500 pieces of hard almonds 149800 pieces of soft-shell almonds 80 lb of saffron pears 20 lb of saffron apples 2000 pieces of dried whole reed-berries 10 half-aams of quinces 100 lb of thyme 100 lb of laurel leaves 360 lb of small raisins 590 lb of elephant tusks, diverse sorts With which action has been taken in conformity with the order of the Honourable Company. Appearing more broadly from the bill of lading and invoice drawn up thereof and annexed hereto, beside which we have the honour to offer to Your Right Honourable Excellencies also a copy of our latest respectful letter of the 10th of this current month of March, which was dispatched from here with the ship De Snoek that departed on the 14th following, as well as our requisition of necessities for the use of this Government for the upcoming year 1753, which we request may be entirely fulfilled by the goodness of Your Right Honourable Excellencies. Furthermore, having noted that the minister Johannes Gerhardi à Besten, who remained here from the ship De Liefde, does not presently continue his journey with the bearer of this together with his wife Helena Lafebré whom he married here, we also record here that by the aforementioned impediments which have arisen concerning the preparation of this ship Nieuwvijvervreugd, the transshipment of the cargo from Tolsduijn into Breedenhoff—which vessel had already for the greater part been discharged of its imported goods for this Government—has also been notably delayed; which nevertheless, with the continuation of suitable weather, will be pursued with all possible speed, and that ship Breedenhoff will subsequently be dismissed to the fatherland at the earliest opportunity. Furthermore, on the dates below, the following three return ships of the Company appeared in desirable condition at this roadstead, namely: On 22 March, Bloemendaal with 1 dead, 3 sick, having sailed from Punto Gale on 16 January of the current year in company with the ship Zaamslag, from which it was separated eight days thereafter. Ditto, De Voorsigtigheijd with 1 dead, no sick, which, having put to sea from the Ganges on 15 December of the aforementioned year, was forced on the 27th following by the breaking of its bowsprit to run into the Bay of Gale; from where, after obtaining a new one, it set sail hither again on 7 January past. On the 24th ditto, Amstelveen with 3 dead, 4 sick, having departed from Macau on the 7th of the often-mentioned month of December. With which ship Bloemendaal a certain packet was brought here.

Under cover of this letter, the bearer hereof, the ship the Admiraal de Ruijter, is dispatched from here to Batavia on this date; with which is also mustered and dismissed today the ship d' Herstelder, bound for Ceylon; which vessels we hope, through a rising favorable wind, together with the ships Spaanderwout, de Hoop, and Crabbendijk still lingering here, may be helped out to sea from this roadstead at the earliest opportunity, the ship Brouwer, alongside the Danish Royal ships Nellebladet and Bornholm, having reached the open sea the day before yesterday from their anchorage on this side of Robben Island with the help of a fresh, steady north-easterly wind; and since the ship Sloterdijk has now been discharged of the goods it brought for this Government, it will consequently be able to follow within a few days this ready-to-sail ship the Admiraal de Ruijter; while in the meantime we shall not fail to dispatch also as soon as possible from this place the only remaining ships, 'T Huijs ten Duijne and the Huijs Ten Donk. From the Cape of Good Hope, the 31st of May Anno 1752. Arrival in False Bay of the return ships Baarsande and Noord Nieuwland. Notification that on the 27th of this month of May, the return ships Baarsande and Noord Nieuwland have safely arrived in False Bay; the first with 12 dead and 10 disabled, and the other, which was dispatched from Bengal on the 14th of February of this year, with only one dead and 3 sick. Which two keels shall be sent on from here to the Fatherland with the utmost speed, trusting further that shortly the remaining Batavian return ships Leijden and Meervliet, and likewise the outbound ship Overnes, may also appear in good order before this Government. The vessel Schuijlenburg is shortly to depart from False Bay for Madagascar to barter for slaves. While shortly after the unloading of the goods which the vessel Schuijlenburg contains for False Bay, the said vessel belonging to this office is to depart from there to Madagascar, in order to barter for slaves there for the benefit of this place. And herewith concluding this, we commend Your Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Persons, along with the important interests of the Honorable Company, to the protection of the Almighty, and remain with due respect, Right Honorable, Stern, Highly Respected, Valiant, Most Wise, Prudent, Most Generous Lord and Noble Lords, Your Right Honorable, Most Humble and Obedient Servants. Immediately after the signing of this, news is brought to us from False Bay that yesterday the ship Pasgeld, recently dispatched by Your Right Honourable, Highly Respected, arrived there with 15 sick and 4 dead, receiving also at the same time report from the Landdrost Ian Andries Horak that the abovementioned Danish ship, being named the Kroonprinces van Denemarken, coming from Tranquebar, had sailed from the Palmiet River to Mossel Bay to have the leaks found on the ship repaired.
