85 From the Cape of Good Hope, the 25th of August, the year 1752. From the Cape of Good Hope, the 4th of August 1752. Departure from False Bay of the outbound ships and Pasgeld; remaining behind in False Bay; arrival here of the ships Oost-Capelle and Overschie; poor condition of the Danish ship the Crown Princess of Denmark in Mossel Bay; which pay. The ship Overnes, which after waiting some days for a good wind continued its voyage from here to Batavia on the 10th of the recently passed month of July, will, as we hope, have delivered to Your Right Honorable Noble Worships our most recent humble letter of the 3rd of the same month before the arrival of this letter; which, however, should that contrary to expectation not yet have occurred, accompanies this one in copy. After stating here concerning the return ships Pasgeld and the Princes Carolina mentioned in that letter that the first-mentioned likewise departed from False Bay for the Netherlands on the 9th of the said month of July, and that the other, the Princes Carolina, has not appeared here up to now, wherefore we presume that it will already have sailed past this corner and continued its voyage directly to Europe, we shall presently let this serve principally for dutiful notification that on the 20th and 21st of the more frequently mentioned month of July there arrived safely in good condition in the cited bay the ships Overschie and Oost-Capelle, the bringers of this; the first with 6 dead and 5 sick, and the other with two deceased, these two keels being those which put to sea on the 8th and 9th of April of this year both from off Vlissingen and from Goeree. At present they have again been brought so far into a state to continue their voyage that they both could be dismissed from here to Batavia on the date of this letter, with which ships are also sent from this place eight leaguers of Cape wine, to wit, with each ship four leaguers, as appears more fully from the invoice and bill of lading drawn up for them accompanying this letter; alongside which are sent in copy the deeds of the persons who had to be corrected here upon the Oost-Cappelle for the further approval of Your Right Honorable Noble Worships, and also with the very same vessel a separate list of the Company's qualified servants, as well as the muster roll of all the other servants of the Honorable Company appointed in this government, precisely as they were found to be in existence at the end of last June. Referring ourselves thereto in all respect, we shall now have the honor to say further concerning the Danish return ship the Crown Princess of Denmark, of which mention was made in our humble letter of the 15th of the month of June: From the Cape of Good Hope, the 14th of August, the year 1752. 87 From the Cape of Good Hope, the 27th of August, the year 1752. that on the 5th of the following month of July there came to our hands a letter from the officers of that vessel, enclosed in copy with this, whereby, after prior notification of their arrival in Mossel Bay and that upon an inspection made they had found their vessel to be entirely unfit to put to sea again without making major repairs to it, they further urgently request that two master carpenters or other persons skilled in that work might be sent to them from here to investigate whether the repairs that would have to be done to their ship for the aforementioned end can indeed take place in the said Mossel Bay or not; and further that two thousand rixdollars might be advanced to them for the account of the Danish Company for the purchase of provisions for their ship's crew. And since the master of the ship's carpenters here could well be spared without detriment to the Company's service, he was thereupon commissioned, with one other skilled ship's carpenter, to perform the aforesaid inspection, and the requested money was likewise granted. Furthermore, upon the verbal request made in this regard by one of the mates of the more frequently mentioned ship the Princess of Denmark, who brought the aforementioned letter here, we also granted permission to its officers that, in case the cargo of that vessel had to be brought ashore, they may erect a shed or other suitable storage place for the preservation thereof wherever it will be most conveniently situated. Concluding this herewith, we commend the highly esteemed persons of Your Right Honorable Noble Worships, together with the important interests of the Honorable Company, to the protection of the Almighty, and remain with dutiful respect, Right Noble, Honorable, Right Worshipful, Valiant, Most Wise, Prudent, Most Generous Lords and Noble Lords, Your Right Honorable Noble Worships' most humble and obedient servants. The vessel named in the margin having finally, with much effort and care, been fully laden, turns today under God's guidance its prow from here to the Capital of the Indies toward Your High Honours, being laden, since under the present circumstances it did not have a full cargo of rice, first with 21 pieces of beams, long 25 feet, thick 12 inches, 160 ditto, long 20 feet, thick 12 inches, 200 swallowtail planks, long 18 feet, wide 2 to 3 ditto, thick 7 to 8 inches, and then 300 lasts of rice, which together with the expenses amounts to the sum of f 9696:12: according to the enclosed bill of lading and invoice, beside which is also enclosed an expense account for one month's ration and refreshments to the amount of f 398:10, for the write-off of which I am humbly awaiting Your High Honours' favourable authorization; the aforementioned vessel Tiesenburg has also loaded 14 lasts of white table rice for this month's provision for Your High Honours, each being separately marked as is noted on the accompanying memorandum; it being presently impossible for me under these circumstances, according to my bounden duty, to provide Your High Honours with the requested poultry, since the same has been completely laid waste and ruined by the revolt that arose here and the invasion of the rebels, therefore humbly requesting Your High Honours' pardon, not failing to collect new stock as soon as it is feasible for me and to send it respectfully to Your High Honours. The relieved soldiers who cross over from Samarang with the said vessel to the Coast, having performed their duty here ashore during the presence of the said vessel, and for those reasons have also received their ordinary board money from here up to the ultimate of the same; however, Corporal Appeldoorn went missing on 20 May when he was out together with a detachment against the Brebes rebels, it being reported by his officers that the said Corporal, during the advance march, while closing in at the rear, had turned aside into a forest, which was reported to him only a long time afterwards, whereupon he immediately had a search conducted, but he was not found, nor has he appeared to this day, and has thus gone missing with his full arms. The last detachment that departed under the command of Captain Voltz has not yet returned; furthermore, things here and roundabout remain in the condition as reported in my last humble and respectful letters to Your High Nobilities. The aforementioned vessel departs today under the convoy of these humble letters across to Your High Nobilities. Wherewith, with all dutiful and bounden respect, I subscribe myself, Noble and Wide-Ruling Lord and Lords, Your High Nobilities' very humble and bounden servant, was signed C. G. For which reason we cannot refrain from giving Your Right Noblenesses dutiful notice thereof, with a very humble request for authorization either to send back that grease or to sell it at public auction, and further that it may please Your Right Noblenesses to accommodate us with usable butter, even if it were only half of that quantity; and furthermore with the indispensably required cash, merchandise, medicines, artillery, and other goods, as stated in our respectful Annual Requisition, which we take the liberty to present herewith to Your Right Noblenesses in all deference. And further very humbly to report that we have dispatched the aforementioned vessel Schijbeek, both to fetch a cargo of rice and produce and to convey some relief from the militia sent to us by Your Right Noblenesses' High Favor to Sourabaija. Furthermore, the ship D'Eijndhoef also to Japara for the aforesaid purpose, and the Naarstigheijd to Qualla Damak, while giving the ship Westhoven a lower tier of timber in order to subsequently be able to take in rice at Paccalong. Gerrit de Haan has tried with all diligence to continue his voyage to the East, but in vain, because, due to the severe leakage that occurred on it—although it was already partly repaired at Rembang—he was forced to retreat as far as Japara, and to put that small keel there on the mud; and since it seems to be irreparable, we have found ourselves obliged to assign to the mapmaker De Haan the pantjalling De Hartlooper in order to fulfill his commission, and respectfully request Your High Nobilities' order whether the aforementioned bark should be broken up, or sold to the highest bidder according to our provisional decision taken on the date of 28 June past; which we take the liberty of presenting in all respect to Your High Nobilities, together with the further resolutions of 3, 20, and 31 May, 7, 14, and 28 June, as well as 4 July; the first-mentioned containing principally that on that day, with regard to the widow of the Pangeran Pourbaya, we had to take the decision to have a house rented for her in this city, because her stay outside of it was judged to be a matter of much concern and consideration, for the reason that her entire family is not only related to the wanderers, but there is also found among her retinue a full sister of the Pangeran Maas Said, who would perhaps leave no stone unturned to abduct her from here in a clandestine manner, and also to entice to rebellion the son of the former administrator of the realm Nata Coesoema, who is likewise among the aforementioned retinue and has already reached his years of manhood, to increase his following; while that of 20 May amply mentions our arrangement made regarding the uniform of the militia, according to which a common soldier's entire uniform, including shoes and linen, now costs no more than rd:s 3. 36., and thus considerably less than before, and why we have therefore also, in hopes of Your High Nobilities' favorable approval, completely abolished the deduction of the cash funds by the Captains; we trust that this arrangement, together with our order issued on that day against the illicit selling of drinks, and the drafted Regulations for the city doctor, inserted in our Resolution of 3 May, will merit Your High Nobilities' approval; and meanwhile proceeding to domestic affairs, we have the honor humbly to communicate to Your High Nobilities:

From Java's East Coast, the 11th of July 1752. to give report of the changes that have occurred in the charitable institutions and thus to report that of The Board of Orphan Masters, in place of the deceased Major Hendrik De Clercq, the presidency was again conferred on the 3rd of May last upon the Merchant Hendrik Duirveld; likewise dismissed as a member from the same was the Chinese Oeij Tjamrong, and in his place was again chosen the fellow Chinese Oeij Hamlong; being Relieved from the administration of the orphan funds the Junior Merchants Pieter Blaquiere and Matthijs Frederix Hemsing, and in turn conferred upon the Military Captain Gerrit van Santen and the Junior Merchant Daniel van Lembroek; likewise that of the poor funds to the aforementioned Hemsing and the Junior Merchant Willem Fockens, on account of the election of the Merchant Duirveld as president of the aforementioned Board of Orphan Masters. At the same time, the aforementioned Junior Merchant Blaquiere, on the same day, along with the Military Lieutenant Ian Iacob Selle, was dismissed at his request as outside regent Of the home for the aged, and nominated thereto again were the Garrison Captain van Santen with the Junior Merchant Mr. Petrus Stellingwerff, to hold oversight over that charitable institution together with the third regent Gerrit Willem Meijer; the outgoing outside regents and administrators having already made transfer of the cash box to the newly elected ones, as Your High Excellencies may observe, if it pleases you, from our resolution of the 31st of the same month, which we accompany with two petitions from the salaried head carpenter Lourens Steur and the gunner Carel Frans Ernsteijn, both of whom make very humble application to be discharged from the service of the Company, for which we are imploring Your High Excellencies' favor, as well as that it may graciously please you to grant the house carpenter Laurens Boedelkerdel, on account of ample expiration of time, the wage of ƒ60 per month, as he is a man who merits such, and owing to the lack of capable carpenters cannot well be spared; Being also by us, on account of ample expiration of time, released to India's capital the bookkeeper and pay transfer clerk Iacob Hendrik Meijnke, and in his place, upon the good testimonies of the pay bookkeeper, was again appointed the Bookkeeper Ian Frederik Altenburg, with the granting of the emoluments of a junior merchant after the example of his predecessors; and whereas we have also, because of the heavy work, granted these to the bookkeeper and sworn clerk at the secretariat of this Government, Jan Iacob Boohn, so we respectfully pray that it may graciously please Your High Excellencies to agree with your approval to this and the other minor proceedings mentioned herein, 37.
