Concerning the requested delivery. were entirely perished, decided to have them broken up, and to purchase another such vessel for the service of this government, or rather to have them built here in the yard; while in the meantime we have the honor very respectfully to inform Your High Nobilities that it is impossible for us, by way of foresight regarding the honored requisition, to state anything with certainty concerning the quantity of rice that this government could deliver this year, on account of the troubles that have arisen on this coast, principally in the Oosthoek; yet in case these should suddenly happen to cease (which God grant), there is hope that the full contingent, according to the allocation made thereof by our resolution of 19 April of this year, will come in completely and be delivered by the Regents, to which end the Surabaya servants have also been admonished for the second time to do their best according to the record in our resolution of 19 July past, appended hereto in copy, alongside those of the 12th, 17th, 3rd, and 24th of the past month, as well as the 2nd, 16th, and 30th of this month, from the first of which Your High Nobilities, if you please, will observe that for the farmers of Tagal, as well as Paccalon, (we, upon the request of the Chinese Tan Kioengro and Souw Lieuro, farmers of the shahbandar duties and toll gates at Tagal, Soembar, and Pamalang, as well as Paccalongang and Batang with the five kampongs, have on that day seen fit before Your High Nobilities, on account of the devatations wrought thereabouts by the roamers and the standstill of trade caused thereby, not only to petition, as we presently take the liberty to do for the two first-mentioned, a remission of four, and for the two last-mentioned, eight months of farming fees, and moreover, in compensation for their suffered losses, for the farmers of Tagal, Soembar, and Pamalang, item Paccalongang, permission for the free export of 40 koyans of rice per annum until the time for which they have leased that farm shall have expired, provided that this quantity is not exported all at once but successively to Batavia and not to other regions, and that for that grain a decent price above the Company's market rate is also paid to the native; but also to write to the Surabaya servants regarding their proposal, because the Chinese Tan Tianloen and Nio Swanko, farmers of the shahbandar duties at Surabaya and Grissee, gave notice of their inability to pay the toll gates in the Oosthoek. This also demonstrates that all the sugar mills mentioned in the petition of the executors of the estate of Mrs. Sara Pedel, widow of the late Ordinary Councillor Nicolaes Crul, to Extraordinary Councillor Pieter van de Velde, were all demolished and burned down in the Chinese revolt; however, one of them, which is also included among the permitted ones, located in the Japara district and not Kudus, named Brambatang and not Paang Batan, was subsequently rebuilt by the current possessor, the Chinese Orin Kisoet, and over which the said estate consequently has no claim. For although it is true that those sugar mills, or rather their costly structures, were mortgaged for a certain large sum of money to Ordinary Councillor Crul (His Honor), his heirs can never form any claims on it or actually on the plot on which they stood to erect other ones there again, because all such mortgages do not, as in the main capital of the Indies, apply to the land, but to the mill itself with its structures and further equipment of pots, pans, buffaloes, etc., and have taken place from of old, because the land belongs to the Company, and no one is permitted by its regents to erect a sugar mill on it except under a certain annual tribute without any further prerogatives that are otherwise attached to it, such as sugar cane fields, woods, etc. For a miller or owner of a sugar mill, besides the aforesaid annual tribute for the land on which his sugar mill stands, must also pay a certain amount to a regent for the pasture of his buffaloes, hire all the laborers for money, and buy the sugar cane from the original planter. With which we trust to have complied with the honored requirement of Your Right Noblenesses in your letter of the 10th of this month, while we take the liberty of offering to Your Right Noblenesses alongside this a memorandum of account concerning the goods delivered here short by the officers of the ship Wildrijk.

Together with the civil and criminal resolutions of the Court of Justice of this Government, the former from 5 September 1751 to 30 August and the latter from 19 April to 19 July 1752, with the documents relating thereto, from which it will appear to Your High Excellencies, among other things, that on 19 April of this year a certain orphan daughter named Cornelia Crul was condemned by the said Court for committed shameful carnal conversation with the male slave Julij of Bugis, bondman of the matron of the orphanage, Aletta Volk, first to see the execution of the sentence pronounced on the same day against the said bondman, to be whipped, branded, and chained in irons for life in order to work on the Company's public works without wages, and subsequently to earn her living by the work of her hands in the spinning house at Batavia for the period of 12 consecutive years. The Javanese Nojo, ditto, for housebreaking and committed theft, and the Javanese woman Toenjong, also for theft: the first to be whipped, branded, and chained in irons to work at public works without wages for the period of 10 years, and the latter only to be whipped. Item, on 14 June, the Madurese army commanders named Soemanagara, Wadjing Rana, and Aria de Coesoema, together with three Madurese brought from Sourabaija named Radeen Baskara of Sampang, Wira Laxana of Balega, and Maes Moela of Pamalang, besides another Madurese named Wira Cara, for their faithlessness and dishonorable conduct in the troubles that occurred on Madura: the first six to be banished forever, and the last for eight years, to such place as Your High Excellencies shall see fit, for which purpose they are to be sent over by the first opportunity of a ship. Meanwhile, we implore Your High Excellencies' favorable approval of the death sentence passed against the soldier Jan Hendrik van Marxum on 19 July last for the murder committed upon Sergeant Willem Eijmers of Weesel, to be punished with the rope at the gallows until death follows, with confiscation of half of his goods and of the monthly wages due to him by the Company, to be distributed according to custom, expenses having been deducted. On that day, also for the abduction and transport of slaves, as well as publicly committed violence, the Banjar merchant Carti was condemned to be whipped, branded, and chained in irons, to the end of working therein on the public works without wages for the period of 12 consecutive years. Although since the departure of our respectful letters of the ultimate past no matters of particular importance or note have presented themselves that require urgency to be brought to the honored attention of Your Right Honors, we nevertheless cannot refrain from informing Your Right Honors to what extent the honored orders contained in the much venerated missives of the 15th and 31st of August last, with which we were honored on the 16th instant, have been carried into execution; and we thus have the honor to report that we have ordered the Junior Merchant and Japara's Resident Nicolaas Balthasar Kloekhoff to prepare, in anticipation of the arrival of the sloop De Ongehoorzaamheijd for Amboina, the timber mentioned in the first-stated missive, so that it may be fully laden with it as soon as possible, insofar as no room might remain for the rice that could otherwise still be stowed therein according to the honored orders of Your Right Honors, whom we humbly beg to excuse us for not yet being able to comply with the much respected order to send over a quantity of dried cow or buffalo hides for the packaging of the cinnamon, since they are currently at a very high market price and scarce to obtain; yet we shall nevertheless do our best to acquire a quantity of them at civil prices, and as soon as the ship 's Heeren Arendskerke shall have arrived here, to dispatch the same immediately to Paccalongang to take in a bottom layer of timber and rice on top of that; whilst we shall further let it serve for our dutiful guidance and observance that in Bengal, to the families of the silk-winders specified on a separate memorandum received alongside Your Right Honors' honored missive of the ultimate past, one further month's wages has been disbursed over and above the three months granted to them; and so that this may be all the better attended to, we have seen fit to deliver the aforesaid memorandum in copy and extract missive to the pay accountant at this Main Office and to Soura Carta, which we hope may satisfy the purpose of Your Right Honors, to whom we have the honor to communicate that, according to the annual custom, by each of us and the Lieutenant of all the artillery, alongside the masters of the carpentry yard at Caligawee, the armory, blacksmith's shop, and house carpenters, together with the boatswain and overseers over the dispensary and warehouses here, on the first of this month the customary oath of purgation was taken; which we thought fit on that day to have sworn by written declaration by the Residents of Tagal, Damak, Japara, Joana, and Rembang, alongside the warehouse master at Pacalongang, because with no peace of mind according to the old custom has one dared to let them travel here in the present conjuncture of times, as one is unsettled everywhere by the wanderers, against whom the first-named intends tomorrow even to march in person up into the highlands, and of which we therefore judge ourselves obliged to give dutiful notice to Your Right Honors, as well as of the further arrangement made deriving therefrom regarding the daily management of affairs, which Your Right Honors, if it pleases you, may view in our resolution of the 17th instant, which for that purpose we take the liberty to attach alongside our earlier ones of the 1st and 13th before; by which latter, among other things, it appears that by the linen merchant Christiaen Meute two corgies of cloths were purchased for the Office of Bassoura, one of which being of Balinese sorting contains 20 pieces and the other Javanese 40 pieces, the Balinese costing 15 rixdollars and the Javanese 17 1/2 rixdollars, which we have the honor on this occasion to send to Your Right Honors as samples, alongside one corgie of Bandanese sorting purchased at Sumanap at 10 1/8 rixdollars, and thereupon await your honored pleasure whether a larger quantity of them shall be purchased or not; yet regarding their prices no fixed calculation can be made, as few of the former are brought in during the present conjuncture of times, and of the latter produced by its manufacturers; whilst we take the liberty also to present to Your Right Honors the return of the goods disposed of on the 2nd instant at the three-monthly auction, consisting roughly of the following:

The Beuketij shipped off, yet it is daily brought in again in small parcels, which over time may accumulate into something, the more so because much paddy crop is currently still standing young in the fields, and is also newly being cut, so that I have hope that some more grain may still be gathered, so that for the present at this office we have no other shipment in stock except 200 pieces of beams, the ship Duijnenburg already being busy at Wellerie to take in a cargo of timber from there. Furthermore, here round about, both along the coasts and inland, all is well; the rebels in the Baggaleen keep quiet, and are currently far away from the Company's army at Oenarang. The well-known Bantam rebel Kee Tappa also keeps separate from them and roams continually around between the borders of the Baggaleen and Banjoemaas in the land of Gowong, seeking to push through the Banjoemaas land back to the west. We have stationed Ensign Baale there with a company of natives to prevent this transit of the rebels. Right Honourable, Sovereign Lord and Lords. not dared to delay him any longer until his further full cargo, for which he would have had to wait several more days, but the west monsoon being too close at hand, we have, in due obedience to the highly esteemed order of Your Right Excellencies, dispatched the said vessel from here to Cheribon with the aforementioned cargo, in order to be further fully laden there; enclosed here is also a small expense account to the amount of f 36:-:- provided to its crew. The ship Duijnenburg is likewise to be dispatched within a few days with a full cargo of timber. Taking the liberty to let this serve solely to accompany an invoice of such white table rice and poultry as I had the honour to send to Your Right Excellencies today and in the month of May last for the ordinary provisions, amounting to the sum of f 1865:16:8. Concerning the situation of the rebels in the highlands on these borders, I can only respectfully inform Your Right Excellencies that the known rebel Kyai Tappa, since he was driven out of his hiding place in the Ledoek district on the 3rd of this month by Ensign Balen and the Banyumas Tumenggung, no longer holds a permanent place and also dares not show himself any more, continually keeping himself in hidden and remote places with his remaining small but most trusted force, so that it is presently very difficult to overtake him. The two rebelling Pangerans also still remain in the Bagelen, and change their encampment every day, for as soon as the Company's commandos approach them, they scatter from one another, and thus they cannot be overtaken at all. The Company's detachment under Commander Bacheraalt is still stationed at Oenarang, and a commando of Company servants with the Regent of Banyumas is in the Ledoek country to close the passage of the Bantam rebel. Here along the shores, all around is in a desirable state of peace. And just before the receipt of the last-mentioned missive, I received the news that the chief rebel Keatappa had again wrought much devastation, and had already approached near the Cheribon Priangan lands, whereupon I immediately issued the necessary orders and had five hundred Javanese come into the Priangan mountains to act against that enemy, keeping another five hundred in readiness, as well as a provisional ensign Matthijs Elling, a sergeant, a corporal, and sixteen privates sent thither to encourage those people. And yesterday I received the news that the enemy had been defeated by Major Bleeker, according to the missive received from his Honor, which I have the honor to present to Your High Noblenesses, the enemy having already arrived in the Soekapoera territory.
