Furthermore, I hereby inquire whether Your High Noble Right Honourables would also still please be served with 4000 Pickols of powder sugar which we currently still have on hand, as well as 140 Lasts of rice. Wherewith I remain in all submissiveness, High Noble wide-commanding Lord and Honourable Lords, Your High Noble Right Honourables' submissive and humble servant, was signed, S. Batavia. ƒ To His Honour, the High Noble Right Honourable Lord Jacob Mossel, Governor General, and the further Honourable Lords Councillors of India, etc. etc. High Noble, Right Honourable, Highly Strict, Firm, Valiant, Most Wise, Prudent, Discreet and Very Generous Lord and Honourable Lords, Pursuant to the highly esteemed order of Your High Noble Right Honourables, I have laden the ship Hartenlust with the Company's timber works, and it departs herewith to Your High Nobilities, amounting according to the bill of lading invoice with its charges to a sum of ƒ2630: 2:—. The highly revered missive of the 5th of this month I duly received on the 12th thereafter, and I thank you cordially for the favourable decision regarding the reckoning of the error concerning the rice. And henceforth, according to the esteemed order mentioned therein, I shall state on the expense account the date when the ships or vessels arrive here, though the ship's officers strongly object to receiving one head of cattle every eight days, because they say that it is too little and that they receive more in Batavia. The prospect regarding the rice, besides the 140 Lasts currently in stock, could yield about another 150 Lasts, but the tax farmers complain greatly about it, because they, as they say, are in such a manner not capable of paying their lease monies, and therefore they request that Your High Noble Right Honourables may permit them to receive tax on the Company's exported rice. I request once more Your High Nobilities' favour that there may be sent hither the 50 Pickols of tin 31. From Cheribon, the 21st of October 1752. Below was written, P.S. at the closing of this, the pantjalling Aurora arrived here, bringing along three vessels from which he chased off the pirates without a single person being left behind, and in which were still some onions and two deer, and chickens. The highly respected orders contained in the missives of the 7th and 25th of October past, I duly received by the ship Westhoven and the Spaarsaamheijd on the 20th of October and the 1st of this month, the first-mentioned vessel returning herewith to Your High Noble Right Honourables laden with 412937½ lb powder sugar, 140 Lasts of rice and 2000 pieces of leaguer staves, amounting according to the annexed bill of lading invoice to a sum of ƒ37425:13:8. The Spaarsaamheijd is already laden with 143225 lb or 1145 1/10 Picols of areca, and has now gone to Galang to take in the remaining powder sugar. From Cheribon the become, because I have had so little rice on hand, and the scarcity did not fail to appear; moreover, the suppliers do not have enough warehouses on the beach to preserve so much sugar from the rain. I have also received a letter from the Resident of Tagal, Talk, dated the 9th of this month, in which his Honor reports that he does not have a quarter cargo of rice on hand, and would therefore send that vessel to me, which I promptly accepted, in order to load it with 200 lasts of rice, and further with paddy, cotton yarns, and indigo, intending to try to gather as much rice as is feasible. Having herewith the honor to present to Your High Nobilities for consideration a list of the private export of rice here, besides Indramayu, the same being purchased at 20 to 25 rixdollars the last, and I am forced to take half or a third for the Honorable Company, which also goes very well, and otherwise I am not able to deliver ten lasts. Due to the driving up of prices, there are sent here with this vessel to Your High Nobilities the former smith here, Roeloff van Vijsen, as being very incompetent to make anything, and I most humbly request Your High Nobilities for a good smith, and a sailmaker. Likewise, there are sent over the five prisoners, Javanese, sentenced by judicial verdict and already punished, at the disposal of Your High Nobilities. From Bantam the 4th of June 1732. the honor to communicate to Your High Nobilities that, with the vessel under my command, on the 24th of the past month of March I cleared the Banks of Bengal, arrived safely yesterday morning in Sunda Strait, and in the evening at 10 o'clock anchored under the high land between the third and fourth point of Java in a depth of 57½ fathoms. My crew and people, except for one sick person, are, praise be to God, still in a desirable condition, having had four deaths on the voyage; furthermore, the Senior Merchant, former Second of the Bengal Directorate and Chief of Cossimbazar, Mr. G. E. de Leuw, is returning with me. This morning I was forced by the adverse wind and storm to remain lying at anchor, but as soon as possible I will endeavor to complete my voyage to the Headquarters. My lading consists of saltpeter, opium, and packed goods. From Bantam the 11th of June 1752. weighed, as appears from the enclosed bill of lading and declaration of both our and the Sultan's commissioned pepper weighers, to which is attached the account between that ruler and the Company, amounting for this cargo, with the incidental expenses incurred thereon according to the invoice, to a sum of ƒ 53786:8:—; and since, through the payment for this cargo, the pepper treasury is entirely stripped of money, we therefore respectfully request that Your High Excellencies will please provide us with the necessary reals when the opportunity arises, the King at the end of this month, according to the old contract, still owing the Company the last two installments, or a sum of 25000 reals. It is most agreeable to us to learn that Your High Excellencies have been pleased to express satisfaction with the statement of accounts of the incurred charges and profits of this office in the year 1751; we assure Your High Excellencies most humbly that we shall not fail in all respects to look after the economy as much as possible, just as we assure Your High Excellencies in the same manner that regarding the construction of the point Dat Oog every possible care was taken, and that nothing was provided regarding this other than what was requested by Lieutenant-Engineer Berg, who, so far as we knew, was qualified for this by Your High Excellencies, and followed by the second signatory. The ship's carpenter, who had long been incapacitated, has already passed away, and the mason and carpenter have departed thither by native craft; on the contrary, however, a house carpenter arrived on the 6th of this month to perform his service here according to his warrant. Joan Fred:k Widderich, promoted by Your High Noblenesses from corporal to junior assistant, respectfully begs to be released from that act, because it pleased the Honorable Commissioner Joan Gideon Loten, in consideration of his nearly two years of service with the pen and as the only one in the trade office, to favor the said Widderich with the salary of 24 guilders, for which reason we also urge that this latter act, as having already been booked, may take effect. To the Lampongs resident van der Werp we shall communicate Your High Noblenesses' order by the first maritime opportunity, and at the same time summon the bark de Meermin. The soldiers from the first three arriving ships, which were almost out of sight upon receipt of Your High Noblenesses' order, have been taken off in compliance with Your High Noblenesses' command, and from them have come ashore here 214 heads, consisting of: 3 sergeants 6 corporals 3 drummers and 202 privates, in exchange for which an equal number of heads from our garrison have departed with those vessels toward Batavia. Pursuant to your Right Honourabilities' most revered orders dated the 27th of this month, we have the honour to report to the same the following for humble elucidation regarding the Palembang Juragan Beloedt Ganie, or otherwise Ke Ingebaij Abdul Fanie: namely, that the same arrived here at the roads on the 22nd of December of the past year with his three-masted pantjalling, along with another Chinese tonting, the first from Samarang and the second from Cheribon, both claiming to have been driven here by contrary winds, and on the pretext of leakage requested to be allowed to sell their cargo here, and that the first might then return again to Samarang with a pass from here, which was also requested by the court, which was in need of rice at that time. However, since upon inspection of those vessels it was found that on the pass granted to him at Samarang—of which an authentic copy is sent herewith, while the original, to the best view of the first undersigned, appears to be an autograph pass of the Honourable Lord Governor Baron van Hohendorff—only two coyangs of provision rice are stated, and yet twenty were found in the Palembang vessel, which the first undersigned, together with the Fiscal, did not wish to take upon themselves, and therefore first requested the high orders of his Honour by missive regarding this, in order to regulate themselves exactly accordingly; whereupon the aforementioned first deponent received from his Right Honour the following order by missive of the 28th of December of the previous year: that his aforementioned Honour would well allow the sale of what was brought to Bantam by the two vessels, but with the retention of the eighteen lasts of rice, or the proceeds thereof, until they should have answered satisfactorily regarding this; which was reiterated once more by his Right Honour by further order in a missive From Bantam the 1st of July 1752. From Bantam the 3rd of July 1752. of the 10th of January of this year; which order the first undersigned personally communicated orally to the Juragans of the two vessels; and seeing further that the one from Palembang remained lying here, advised him personally to proceed to Batavia and speak to his Right Honour in person there, as he said he could not read the pass, and that he had been assured that twenty coyangs were stated on it. Whereupon, finally upon several advices from the first undersigned, he addressed himself to your Right Honours at Batavia, while his vessel is still lying here in the same condition, none of his crew having been further arrested, other than that the Juragan was notified—in accordance with the above-mentioned two successive orders of his Right Honour—that if he wished to depart, he had to leave behind here the eighteen lasts of rice not stated on the pass, or indeed the proceeds thereof, until the first undersigned should have received further orders regarding this. On that occasion, I informed the Lampong chiefs of Your Right Honourables' pleasure contained in the said letter concerning the transport of pepper to Onrust, in case of difficulties arising in taking it to Bantam, which was to their liking, and they were also told, subject to Your Right Honourables' approval, that whenever they intend to sail to Bantam, they should first call here at Siam, whether loaded with pepper or not, in order to request a pass for their safe conduct; for this place lies directly in the passage without causing any hindrance, and by this means I can always learn what may be happening inland. This message was also delivered at Lampong Poeti; and I shall likewise make it known to the other Lampongs as far as Samanca. Meanwhile, I enclose herewith the requisition of necessities for this garrison, the fulfillment of which I humbly request through Your Right Honourables' goodness, especially needing first of all the building materials mentioned therein for the post, in order to set to work and be under roof before the bad monsoon; for which I furthermore humbly request to be allowed to obtain the necessary craftsmen, and some common laborers; I consider Bengali Moors to be the best and certain that through them the work will make more progress; as well as that it may please Your Right Honourables to send a ship here to relieve the one currently lying here in the roads, together with a scow of medium size, which I greatly need in order to bring the goods ashore from on board.
